19  "Now there was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen, enjoying himself splendidly every day.

19  A certain man was wealthy, and he was clothed in purple and in fine linen. And he feasted splendidly every day.

19  There was a rich man, who used to wear purple and fine linen, and every day he made merry very lavishly.

20  But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores, who had been placed at his gate,

20  and a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores,

20  And there was a poor man named Lazarus, who was laid down at that rich manÆs door, afflicted with boils;

21  He longed to fill his stomach with the crumbs that fell from the rich manÆs tray; the dogs also came and licked his boils.

22  And it came to pass that the beggar died, and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.

22  Then it happened that the beggar died, and he was carried by the Angels into the bosom of Abraham. Now the wealthy man also died, and he was entombed in Hell.

22  Now it happened that the poor man died, and the angels carried him into AbrahamÆs bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.

23  And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham from afar, and Lazarus in his bosom.

23  Then lifting up his eyes, while he was in torments, he saw Abraham far away, and Lazarus in his bosom.

23  And while he was tormented in Sheol, he lifted up his eyes from a distance, and saw Abraham, with Lazarus in his bosom.

24  Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am suffering in this flame.'

24  And crying out, he said: ‘Father Abraham, take pity on me and send Lazarus, so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water to refresh my tongue. For I am tortured in this fire.’

24  And he called in a loud voice and said, O my father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip his finger in water and wet my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25  But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things, but now here he is comforted and you are suffering.

25  And Abraham said to him: ‘Son, recall that you received good things in your life, and in comparison, Lazarus received bad things. But now he is consoled, and truly you are tormented.

25  Abraham said to him, My son, remember you received your pleasures when you were living, and Lazarus his hardships; and behold now he is comfortable here, and you are suffering.

26  And besides all this, between us and you a great gulf has been fixed, so that those who desire to cross [over ]from here to you are not able, nor may those from there cross over to us.'

26  Besides all these things, a great gulf is fixed between us and you; so that those who wish to cross over from here to you cannot, neither from there to cross over to us.

26  And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

27  Then he said, 'Therefore I beseech you, father, that you would send him to my father's house,

27  And he said: ‘Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers,

27  He said to him, If that is so, I beseech you, O my father, to send him to my fatherÆs house;

29  Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.'

29  But Abraham saith, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

29  And Abraham said to him: ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.’

30  And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if someone from the dead should go to them, they will repent.'

30  But he said to him, No, my father Abraham; but if only a man from the dead go to them, they will repent.

31  But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded should one rise from the dead.' "

31  But he said to him: ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they believe even if someone has resurrected from the dead.’ ”

31  Abraham said to him, If they will not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they believe even if a man should rise from the dead.
