The Bible in Its Traditions

1 Corinthians 15:0; 8:1–11:34

Now concerning the [things] offered to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.

NOW as concerning sacrifices offered to idols, we know well, that we all have knowledge; knowledge makes for pride, but love ennobles.

And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he has come to know nothing yet as he ought to know.

If any man thinketh that he knoweth anything, he knoweth not yet as he ought to know;

But if anyone considers himself to know anything, he does not yet know in the way that he ought to know.

Byz Nes S TR

But if anyone loves God, this one has been known by Him.

For if anyone loves God, he is known by him.

Therefore concerning the eating of the things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one.

But as to the foods that are immolated to idols, we know that an idol in the world is nothing, and that no one is God, except One.

As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.

For even if they are being called "gods"whether in heaven or on earth (just as there are many gods and many lords),

For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or on earth; as there are gods many, and lords many;

For although there are things that are called gods, whether in heaven or on earth, (if one even considers there to be many gods and many lords)

Byz Nes V

yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom [are] all things, and through whom we [live].

To us there is one God, the Father, from whom comes every thing and by whom we live; and one LORD Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

Byz

However, this knowledge is not in all [people]; rather some, with consciousness of the idol, until now eat it as [something] offered to idols; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.

Howbeit there is not in all men that knowledge: but some, being used until now to the idol, eat as [of] a thing sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.

But knowledge is not in everyone. For some persons, even now, with consent to an idol, eat what has been sacrificed to an idol. And their conscience, being infirm, becomes polluted.

Byz V

But food does not commend us to God; for neither if we eat do we have more, nor if we do not eat do we lack.

But food will not commend us to God: neither, if we eat not, are we the worse; nor, if we eat, are we the better.

But meat does not bring us closer to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither if we do not eat, are we the worse.

Byz

But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak.

But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to the weak.

But be careful not to let your liberty become a cause of sin to those who are weak.

Byz V

10  For if anyone should see you who has knowledge dining in an idol's temple, will not his conscience, being weak, be strengthened so that they eat foods offered to idols?

10  For if a man see thee who hast knowledge sitting at meat in an idol`s temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be emboldened to eat things sacrificed to idols?

10  For if any one should see you, who has knowledge, at table in the temple of idols, shall not the conscience of him who is weak encourage him to eat that which is sacrificed to idols?

Byz TR Nes V

11  And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for the sake of whom Christ died?

11  So the one who is weak and for whom Christ died will be lost through your indifference.

12  But when you thus sin against the brothers, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.

12  And if you offend your brothers, and so influence their weak conscience, you also offend Christ.

Byz Nes S TR

13  Wherefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will by no means eat meat, lest I cause my brother to stumble.

13  Because of this, if food leads my brother to sin, I will never eat meat, lest I lead my brother to sin.

What soldier ever serveth at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not the fruit thereof? Or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?

9:15  But I used none of these things, nor have I written these things that it should become thus for me; for it is better for me rather to die than that anyone should make my boasting void.

15  But I have used none of these things: and I write not these things that it may be so done in my case; for [it were] good for me rather to die, than that any man should make my glorifying void.

9:18  What then is my reward? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ free of charge, so as not to exploit my rights in the gospel.

To those who were without the law, I became as if I were without the law, (though I was not without the law of God, being in the law of Christ) so that I might gain those who were without the law.

17  Now I caution you, without praising, about this: that you assemble together, and not for better, but for worse.

17  Now I give you these commands, not to praise you, for you have not made progress but have become worse.

11:18  For first of all, when you come together in church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it.

18  First of all, indeed, I hear that when you assemble together in the church, there are schisms among you. And I believe this, in part.

11:19  For there must also be sects among you, in order that those who are approved may become recognized among you.

19  For controversies are bound to be among you, that those who are approved may be made manifest among you.

11:20  Therefore when you assemble in the same [place], it is not to eat YHWH's Supper.

20  And so, when you assemble together as one, it is no longer in order to eat the Lord’s supper.

11:21  For when you eat, each one takes first his own supper, and one goes hungry and another is drunk!

21  For each one first takes his own supper to eat. And as a result, one person is hungry, while another is inebriated.

21  But some men eat their supper before others: and so it happens that one is hungry and another is drunken.

11:22  What? Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God, and disgrace those who do not have? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you!

22  What, have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and put them to shame that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you? In this I praise you not.

22  Do you not have houses, in which to eat and drink? Or do you have such contempt for the Church of God that you would confound those who do not have such contempt? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I am not praising you in this.

11:23  For I received from YHWH that which I also delivered unto you: that the Lord Jesus, during the night in which He was betrayed, took bread;

23  For I have received from the Lord what I have also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus, on the same night that he was handed over, took bread,

11:25  Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

11:29  For he that eats and drinks irreverently eats and drinks judgment to himself, not judging correctly the body of YHWH.

29  For whoever eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks a sentence against himself, not discerning it to be the body of the Lord.

29  For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
