For you yourselves know, brothers, [regarding] our coming to you, that it was not in vain.

For yourselves, brethren, know our entering in unto you, that it hath not been found vain

SO you yourselves, my brethren, know that our entrance among you was not in vain

But suffering before and being spitefully treated at Philippi, just as you know, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God with much conflict.

Instead, having previously suffered and been treated shamefully, as you know, at Philippi, we had confidence in our God, so as to speak the Gospel of God to you with much solicitude.

But from the beginning we suffered and as you know were treated shamefully, at PhilipÆpi; then with more struggle but with confidence in our God, we preached to you the gospel of Christ.

For our exhortation [was ]not from error nor from uncleanness, nor in trickery,

For our comfort did not spring from deception, nor from uncleanness, nor from enticing speech

Byz S Nes TR

but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who is testing our hearts.

But, just as we have been tested by God, so that the Gospel would be entrusted to us, so also did we speak, not so as to please men, but rather to please God, who tests our hearts.

For neither were we using flattering speech, as you know, nor covering up greed, God is [our ]witness.

And neither did we, at any time, become flattering in speech, as you know, nor did we seek an opportunity for avarice, as God is witness.

And we have never used flattering words, as you know, to conceal greed; God is witness

Nor seeking glory from men, neither from you, nor from others, even though we were able to carry weight as apostles of Christ.

Nor did we seek the glory of men, neither from you, nor from others.

And we have not sought support from men, neither from you, nor from others, when we could have been burdensome on you for our maintenance, as the apostles of Christ should be.

But we proved to be gentle in your midst, as a nursing [mother] cherishes her own children.

And although we could have been a burden to you, as Apostles of Christ, instead we became like little ones in your midst, like a nurse cherishing her children.

But we were meek when we were among you, and like a foster mother who loves her children

In this way longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.

Likewise, we are affectionately desirous to give you, not only the gospel of God, but even our lives, because you were dear to us.

For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil; for laboring night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.

For you remember, brethren, that we labored hard, working night and day, with our hands, so that we would not burden you.

For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

10  You are witnesses, and [so is ]God, how devoutly and justly and blamelessly we were among you that believe;

10  Ye are witnesses, and God [also], how holily and righteously and unblameably we behaved ourselves toward you that believe

10  You are witnesses, and God also, how we preached to you the gospel of God, purely and righteously, and we lived blamelessly among all the believers.

11  as indeed you know how each one of you, as a father [to] his own children, we exhorted, and comforted [you], and imploring you,

11  And you know the manner, with each one of you, like a father with his sons,

11  You know how we exhorted and encouraged and charged every one of you, as a father does his children,

12  that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.

12  in which we were pleading with you and consoling you, bearing witness, so that you would walk in a manner worthy of God, who has called you into his kingdom and glory.

12  And we bore the testimony to you, so that you may live a life worthy of God, who has called you to his kingdom and glory.

13  Because of this we also give thanks to God unceasingly, so that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you received not the word of men, but just as it truly is, the word of God, which also is at work in you that believe.

13  And for this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when ye received from us the word of the message, [even the word] of God, ye accepted [it] not [as] the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also worketh in you that believe.

13  For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

14  For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus, because you suffered the same things from your fellow countrymen, just as also they [did] by the Jews,

14  For you, my brethren, have taken the pattern of the churches of God in Judµa which are in Christ Jesus: for you also have suffered from the people of your own tribe, even as they have suffered from the Jews;

14  For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews

15  who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove out us, and pleased not God, and are contrary to all men;

15  who also killed both the Lord Jesus, and the Prophets, and who have persecuted us. But they do not please God, and so they are adversaries to all men.

16  forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved; to fill up their sins always: but the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.

16  They prohibit us to speak to the Gentiles, so that they may be saved, and thus do they continually add to their own sins. But the wrath of God will overtake them in the very end.

17  But we, brothers, being unwillingly separated from you for a short season, in presence, not in heart, were all the more eager to see your face with much desire.

17  But we, brethren, being bereaved of you for a short season, in presence not in heart, endeavored the more exceedingly to see your face with great desire

17  And we, brothers, having been deprived of you for a short time, in sight, but not in heart, have hurried all the more to see your face, with a great desire.

18  Therefore we desired to come to you-I, Paul, time and again, but Satan hindered us.

18  because we would fain have come unto you, I Paul once and again; and Satan hindered us.

18  For we wanted to come to you, (indeed, I, Paul, attempted to do so once, and then again,) but Satan impeded us.

Because of this, willing to wait no longer, it was pleasing to us to remain at Athens, alone.

3:2  and sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God, and our fellow worker in the gospel of Christ, in order to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith,

And we sent Timothy, our brother and a minister of God in the Gospel of Christ, to confirm you and to exhort you, on behalf of your faith,

And send Ti-moÆthe-us, our brother, a minister of God, and our helper in the gospel of Christ, to sustain you and comfort you concerning your faith

3:3  that no one should be disturbed by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that we are appointed unto this.

so that no one would be disturbed during these tribulations. For you yourselves know that we have been appointed to this.

So that no man among you might be disheartened by these tribulations: for you, yourselves, know that this is our destiny.

3:4  For even when we were with you, we were telling you in advance that we were going to be afflicted, just as it also happened, and you know.

For verily, when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we are to suffer affliction; even as it came to pass, and ye know.

3:5  Because of this, when I could no longer endure [it], I sent to learn about your faith, lest somehow the tempter had tempted you, and our labor be in vain.

For this cause I also, when I could no longer forbear, sent that I might know your faith, lest by any means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor should be in vain.

For this reason also, I was not willing to wait any longer, and I sent to find out about your faith, lest perhaps he who tempts may have tempted you, and our labor might have been in vain.

3:6  But now when Timothy came to us from you, and brought good news to us of your faith and your love, and that you have good remembrance of us always, longing to see us, as we also [long to see] you-

But then, when Timothy arrived to us from you, he reported to us your faith and charity, and that you keep a good remembrance of us always, desiring to see us, just as we likewise desire to see you.

3:7  because of this we were encouraged, brothers, in regard to you in all our affliction and distress by your faith.

Therefore, our brethren, we have been comforted by you, in the midst of all our distress and tribulations because of your faith

3:9  For whatever thanksgiving can we render to God for you, for all the joy with which we are rejoicing because of you in the presence of our God,

For what thanks would we be able to repay to God because of you, for all the joy with which we rejoice over you before our God?

What thanks can we offer to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sakes,

3:10  night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face and to perfect what is lacking in your faith?

10  For night and day, ever more abundantly, we are praying that we may see your face, and that we may complete those things that are lacking in your faith.

10  Except, before God to abundantly offer supplication, night and day, to see your faces, and to complete that which is lacking in your faith?
