2 Chronicles 20:0; 8:1–30:27

M G S

And it came to pass at the end of twenty years, wherein Solomon had built the house of YHWH, and his own house,

Then, twenty years having passed since Solomon built the house of the Lord and his own house,

that the cities which Huram had given to Solomon, Solomon built them, and caused the children of Israel to dwell there.

he built the cities that Hiram had given to Solomon, and he caused the sons of Israel to live there.

And Solomon went to Hamath-zobah, and prevailed against it.

Also, he went to Hamath Zobah, and he obtained it.

M G V S

And he built Tadmor in the wilderness, and all the store-cities, which he built in Hamath.

M G S
V

Also he built Beth-horon the upper, and Beth-horon the nether, fortified cities, with walls, gates, and bars;

And he built upper Beth-horon and lower Beth-horon, as walled cities, having gates and bars and locks,

and Baalath, and all the store-cities that Solomon had, and all the cities for his chariots, and the cities for his horsemen, and all that Solomon desired to build for his pleasure in Jerusalem, and in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.

as well as Baalath, and all the very strong cities which were of Solomon, and all the cities of the chariots, and the cities of the horsemen. Everything whatsoever that Solomon willed and decided, he built in Jerusalem, and in Lebanon, and throughout the entire land of his authority.

M G V S

As for all the people that were left of the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, who were not of Israel;

of their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel consumed not, of them did Solomon raise a levy of bondservants, unto this day.

those of their sons and their posterity whom the sons of Israel had not put to death, Solomon subjugated as tributaries, even to this day.

But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no servants for his work; but they were men of war, and chief of his captains, and rulers of his chariots and of his horsemen.

But Solomon did not make any of the children of Israel servants in his kingdom; for, behold, they were warriors and rulers, and mighty men, and captains of chariots and horsemen.

But he did not appoint anyone from the sons of Israel to serve in the works of the king. For they were men of war, and first rulers, and commanders of his chariots and horsemen.

10  And these were the chief officers of king Solomon, even two hundred and fifty, that bore rule over the people.

10  Now all the leaders of the army of king Solomon were two hundred fifty, who were instructing the people.

10  And these were the governors and overseers of King Solomon, even two hundred and fifty, who exercised authority over the people, who did the work.

11  And Solomon brought up the daughter of Pharaoh out of the city of David unto the house that he had built for her; for he said: 'No wife of mine shall dwell in the house of David king of Israel, because the places are holy, whereunto the ark of YHWH hath come.'

11  Truly, he transferred the daughter of Pharaoh, from the City of David, to the house that he had built for her. For the king said: “My wife shall not live in the house of David, king of Israel, for it has been sanctified. For the ark of the Lord has entered into it.”

12  Then Solomon offered burnt-offerings unto YHWH on the altar of the YHWH, which he had built before the porch,

12  Then Solomon offered holocausts to the Lord on the altar of the Lord, which he had constructed before the portico,

M G V S

13  even as the duty of every day required, offering according to the commandment of Moses, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the appointed seasons, three times in the year, even in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles.

14  And he appointed, according to the ordinance of David his father, the courses of the priests to their service, and the Levites to their charges, to praise, and to minister before the priests, as the duty of every day required; the doorkeepers also by their courses at every gate; for so had David the man of God commanded.

14  And he established, according to the order of his father David, the courses of the priests, and that according to their public ministrations: and the Levites were appointed over their charges, to praise and minister before the priests according to the daily order: and the porters were appointed according to their courses to the different gates: for thus were the commandments of David the man of God.

14  And he appointed, in accord with the plan of his father David, the offices of the priests in their ministries; and those of the Levites, in their orders, so that they might praise and minister before the priests according to the ritual of each day; and the porters, in their divisions, from gate to gate. For so had David, the man of God, instructed.

M G S

15  And they departed not from the commandment of the king unto the priests and Levites concerning any matter, or concerning the treasures.

15  Neither the priests, nor the Levites, transgressed against the commands of the king, in all that he had instructed, and in the keeping of the treasuries.

16  So all the work of Solomon was set in order from the day of the foundation of the house of YHWH, and until it was finished. So the house of the YHWH was perfected.

16  Now all the work had been prepared from the day when the foundation was laid, until Solomon finished the house of the Lord.

16  Solomon had all the expenses prepared, from the day on which he founded the house of the Lord, even until the day when he perfected it.

17  Then went Solomon to Ezion-geber, and to Eloth, on the sea-shore in the land of Edom.

17  Then Solomon went to Gasion Gaber, and to Ælath near the sea in the land of Idumea.

17  Then Solomon went away to Eziongeber, and to Eloth, on the coast of the Red Sea, which is in the land of Edom.

18  And Huram sent him by the hands of his servants ships, and servants that had knowledge of the sea; and they came with the servants of Solomon to Ophir, and fetched from thence four hundred and fifty talents of gold, and brought them to king Solomon.

18  And Chiram sent by the hand of his servants ships, and servants skilled in naval affairs; and they went with the servants of Solomon to Sophira, and brought thence four hundred and fifty talents of gold, and they came to king Solomon.

18  And Hiram sent to him ships, by the hands of his servants, sailors and skillful navigators of the sea, and they went away with the servants of Solomon to Ophir. And they took from there four hundred fifty talents of gold, and they brought it to king Solomon.

9:1  And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to prove Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem, with a very great train, and camels that bore spices and gold in abundance, and precious stones; and when she was come to Solomon, she spoke with him of all that was in her heart.

And the queen of Saba heard of the name of Solomon, and she came to Jerusalem with a very large force, to prove Solomon with hard questions, and she had camels bearing spices in abundance, and gold, and precious stones: and she came to Solomon, and told him all that was in her mind.

Also, when the queen of Sheba had heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to Jerusalem, with great riches and with camels which were carrying aromatics, and very much gold, and precious gems, so that she might test him with enigmas. And when she had approached Solomon, she spoke to him all that was in her heart.

9:2  And Solomon told her all her questions; and there was not any thing hid from Solomon which he told her not.

And Solomon explained for her all that she had proposed. And there was nothing that he did not make clear to her.

And King Solomon told her every secret that was in her heart; and there was nothing hidden from the king which he could not tell her.

M G S

9:3  And when the queen of Sheba had seen the wisdom of Solomon, and the house that he had built,

And after she saw these things, specifically, the wisdom of Solomon, and the house which he had built,

9:4  and the food of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their apparel; his cupbearers also, and their apparel; and his ascent by which he went up into the house of YHWH; there was no more spirit in her.

indeed also the foods of his table, and the habitations of the servants, and the duties of his ministers, and their apparel, and also his cupbearers and their garments, and the victims which he was immolating in the house of the Lord, there was no longer any spirit in her, due to astonishment.

9:5  And she said to the king: 'It was a true report that I heard in mine own land of thine acts, and of thy wisdom.

And she said to King Solomon, It was a true report which I heard in my own land of your acts and of your wisdom;

M S

9:6  Howbeit I believed not their words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it; and, behold, the half of the greatness of thy wisdom was not told me; thou exceedest the fame that I heard.

Yet I believed not the reports until I came, and my eyes saw: and, behold, the half of the abundance of thy wisdom was not told me: thou hast exceeded the report which I heard.

I did not believe those who described it, until I had arrived and my eyes had seen, and I had proven that not even half of your wisdom had been described to me. You have exceeded your fame with your virtue.

9:7  Happy are thy men, and happy are these thy servants, that stand continually before thee, and hear thy wisdom.

Blessed are thy men, blessed are these thy servants, who stand before thee continually, and hear thy wisdom.

Happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom.

M G S

9:8  Blessed be YHWH thy God, who delighted in thee, to set thee on His throne, to be king for the YHWH thy God; because thy God loved Israel, to establish them for ever, therefore made He thee king over them, to do justice and righteousness.'

Blessed is the Lord your God, who willed to set you upon his throne as a king for the Lord your God. Since God loves Israel, he wishes to preserve them unto eternity. For this reason, he appointed you as king over them, so that you may accomplish judgment and justice.”

9:9  And she gave the king a hundred and twenty talents of gold, and spices in great abundance, and precious stones; neither was there any such spice as the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.

Then she gave to the king one hundred twenty talents of gold, and an exceedingly great abundance of aromatics, and very precious gems. Never were there such aromatics as those that the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.

9:10  And the servants also of Huram, and the servants of Solomon that brought gold from Ophir, brought sandal-wood and precious stones.

10  Then too, the servants of Hiram, with the servants of Solomon, brought gold from Ophir, and wood from thyine trees, and very precious gems.

M G V

9:11  And the king made of the sandal-wood paths for the house of YHWH, and for the king's house, and harps and psalteries for the singers; and there were none such seen before in the land of Judah.

11  And they also brought algum wood for stools for the house of the LORD and for the house of King Solomon, and harps for singers, and there were none such seen before in the land of Judah.

M G S

9:12  And king Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever she asked, beside that which she had brought unto the king. So she turned, and went to her own land, she and her servants.

12  Then king Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all that she desired, and all that she requested, and much more than what she had brought to him. And returning, she went away to her own land with her servants.

M S

9:13  Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred and threescore and six talents of gold;

13  And the weight of the gold that was brought to Solomon in one year was six hundred and sixty-six talents of gold,

M S
G

9:14  beside that which the traffickers and merchants brought; and all the kings of Arabia and the governors of the country brought gold and silver to Solomon.

14  besides what the men who were regularly appointed and the merchants brought, and all the kings of Arabia and princes of the land: all brought gold and silver to king Solomon.

14  apart from the sum that the legates of various nations and the merchants were accustomed to bring, and apart from the gold and silver that all the kings of Arabia, and the princes of the lands, were bringing together for Solomon.

M G S
V

9:15  And king Solomon made two hundred targets of beaten gold: six hundred shekels of beaten gold went to one target;

15  And so, king Solomon made two hundred gold spears, from six hundred gold pieces, the amount used for each spear,

9:16  three hundred shields of beaten gold also: three hundred shekels of gold went to one shield; and the king put them in the house of the forest of Lebanon.

16  and also three hundred gold shields, from three hundred gold pieces, which covered each shield. And the king placed them in the armory, which was situated in a forest.

M S
G V

9:17  Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with pure gold.

17  And the king made a great throne of ivory, and he gilded it with pure gold.

M G V S

9:18  And there were six steps to the throne, with a footstool of gold, which were fastened to the throne, and arms on either side by the place of the seat, and two lions standing beside the arms.

M G S
V

9:19  And twelve lions stood there on the one side and on the other upon the six steps; there was not the like made in any kingdom.

19  Moreover, there were twelve additional little lions standing upon the six steps on both sides. There was no similar throne in all the kingdoms.

9:20  And all king Solomon's drinking-vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold; silver was nothing accounted of in the days of Solomon.

20  Also, all the vessels for the feasts of the king were of gold, and the vessels of the forest house of Lebanon were from the purest gold. For silver in those days was considered as nothing.

M S
G

9:21  For the king had ships that went to Tarshish with the servants of Huram; once every three years came the ships of Tarshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.

21  For a ship went for the king to Tharsis with the servants of Chiram: once every three years came vessels from Tharsis to the king, laden with gold, and silver, and ivory, and apes.

21  For indeed, the ships of the king went to Tarshish, with the servants of Hiram, once every three years. And they brought from there gold, and silver, and ivory, and primates, and peacocks.

9:22  So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom.

22  And Solomon exceeded all other kings both in riches and wisdom.

22  And so, Solomon was magnified above all the kings of the earth in wealth and glory.

M G V S

9:23  And all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.

M G S

9:24  And they brought every man his present, vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and raiment, armour, and spices, horses, and mules, a rate year by year.

24  And they were bringing to him gifts, vessels of silver and of gold, and garments, and armor, and aromatics, and horses, and mules, throughout each year.

9:25  And Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, that he bestowed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem.

25  Also, Solomon had forty thousand horses in the stables, and twelve thousand chariots and horsemen, and he appointed them to the cities of the chariots, and where the king was in Jerusalem.

9:26  And he ruled over all the kings from the River even unto the land of the Philistines, and to the border of Egypt.

26  Now he also exercised authority over all the kings from the river Euphrates as far as the land of the Philistines, and as far as the borders of Egypt.

M G

9:27  And the king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made he to be as the sycamore-trees that are in the Lowland, for abundance.

27  And he brought forth so much silver that it was as plentiful in Jerusalem as stones. And cedar trees were as great in number as the sycamores that spring up in the plains.

27  And King Solomon made silver as plentiful in Jerusalem as stones, and he made cedar trees as the sand that is by the sea in abundance.

M S

9:28  And they brought horses for Solomon out of Egypt, and out of all lands.

28  And Solomon imported horses from Egypt, and from every other country.

28  And horses were brought to him from Egypt and from every region.

M G V S

9:29  Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, first and last, are they not written in the words of Nathan the prophet, and in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and in the visions of Jedo the seer concerning Jeroboam the son of Nebat?

9:30  And Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years.

M G S

9:31  And Solomon slept with his fathers; they buried him in the city of David his father; and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.

M S

10:1  And Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.

And Roboam came to Sychem: for all Israel came to Sychem to make him king.

Now Rehoboam set out for Shechem. For in that place all of Israel had convened, so that they might appoint him as king.

M G

10:2  And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it--for he was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of king Solomon--that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

But when Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (indeed he had fled to that place from Solomon) had heard it, he promptly returned.

And it came to pass, when Jeroboam and all Israel heard it,

10:3  And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came, and they spoke to Rehoboam, saying

And they summoned him, and he arrived with all of Israel. And they spoke to Rehoboam, saying

They came and said to Rehoboam the son of Solomon,

10:4  'Thy father made our yoke grievous; now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.'

“Your father pressed upon us a very difficult yoke. You should govern us more lightly than your father, who imposed on us a heavy servitude, and so lift up some of the burden, so that we may serve you.”

Your father made our yoke grievous; now therefore lighten somewhat the harsh rule of your father and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve you.

10:6  And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying: 'What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?'

And king Roboam assembled the elders that stood before his father Solomon in his life-time, saying, How do ye counsel me to return an answer to this people?

he took counsel with the elders, who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still living, saying, “What counsel would you give to me, so that I may respond to the people?”

M G S

10:7  And they spoke unto him, saying: 'If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.'

And they said to him, “If you please this people, and if you soothe them with words of clemency, they will be your servants for all days.”

10:8  But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men that were grown up with him, that stood before him.

But he set aside the counsel of the elders, and he began to have discussion with the youth, who had been raised with him and who were among his companions.

M S
G

10:9  And he said unto them: 'What counsel give ye, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying: Make the yoke that thy father did put upon us lighter?'

And he said to them, What do ye advise that I should answer this people, who spoke to me, saying, Ease somewhat of the yoke which thy father laid upon us?

And he said to them: “How does it seem to you? Or how should I respond to this people, who have said to me, ‘Lift up the yoke that your father imposed upon us?’ ”

M G S

10:10  And the young men that were grown up with him spoke unto him, saying: 'Thus shalt thou say unto the people that spoke unto thee, saying: Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them: My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.

10  But they responded like youths, having been raised with him in luxury, and they said: “So shall you speak to the people, who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy; you should lighten it,’ and so shall you respond to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than the back of my father.

10:11  And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.'

11  My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, and I will place more weight upon it. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.’ ”

M S

10:12  So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king bade, saying: 'Come to me again the third day.'

12  And Jeroboam and all the people came to Roboam on the third day, as the king had spoken, saying, Return to me on the third day.

12  Then Jeroboam, and the entire people, went to Rehoboam on the third day, just as he had instructed them.

M G S

10:13  And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,

13  And the king responded harshly, abandoning the counsel of the elders.

10:14  and spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying: ' My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.'

14  And he spoke according to the will of the youths: “My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, which I will make heavier. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.”

10:15  So the king hearkened not unto the people; for it was brought about of God, that YHWH might establish His word, which He spoke by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

15  And the king hearkened not to the people, for there was a change of their minds from God, saying, The Lord has confirmed his word, which he spoke by the hand of Achia the Selonite concerning Jeroboam the son of Nabat, and concerning all Israel;

15  And he did not acquiesce to the pleadings of the people. For it was the will of God that his word be fulfilled, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, to Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.

10:16  And when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying: 'What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse; every man to your tents, O Israel; now see to thine own house, David.' So all Israel departed unto their tents.

16  for the king did not hearken to them. And the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David, or inheritance in the son of Jessae? to thy tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So all Israel went to their tents.

16  Then the entire people, speaking more harshly to the king, spoke to him in this way: “There is no portion for us in David, and there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Return to your dwellings, O Israel. Then you, O David, shall pasture your own house.” And Israel went away to their dwellings.

10:17  But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

17  But the men of Israel, even those who dwelt in the cities of Juda, remained and made Roboam king over them.

17  But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel who were living in the cities of Judah.

10:18  Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the levy; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, so that he died. And king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

Thus says the Lord: You shall not ascend and fight against your brothers. Let each one return to his own house. For it is by my will that this has happened.” And when they had heard the word of the Lord, they turned back, and they did not continue on against Jeroboam.

11:11  And he fortified the strongholds, and put captains in them, and store of victual, and oil and wine.

11  And when he had enclosed them with walls, he placed in them rulers, and storehouses of provisions, that is, of oil and wine.

11  At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick; and Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise and disguise yourself, and be as a simple woman, that you may not be known to be the wife of Jeroboam; and go to Shiloh; behold, there is Ahijah the prophet, who told me that I should be king over this people.

11:12  And in every city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong. And Judah and Benjamin adhered to him.

12  Moreover, in each city he made an armory of shields and spears, and he strengthened them with the utmost diligence. And he ruled over Judah and Benjamin.

12  Go to him; he shall tell you what shall become of this child.

11:13  And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel presented themselves to him out of all their border.

13  Then the priests and Levites, who were in all of Israel, came to him from all their settlements,

13  And the LORD said to Ahijah, Behold, the wife of Jeroboam is coming to ask a thing of you concerning her son; for he is sick; thus and thus shall you say to her; for it shall be, when she comes in, that she will disguise herself.

11:14  For the Levites left their open land and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem; for Jeroboam and his sons cast them off, that they should not execute the priest's office unto YHWH;

14  leaving behind their suburbs and possessions, and crossing over to Judah and to Jerusalem. For Jeroboam and his followers had cast them out, so that they could not exercise the priestly office to the Lord.

14  And it came to pass, when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet as she came in at the door, he said to her, Come in, wife of Jeroboam; why have you disguised yourself? For I am sent to tell you harsh words.

22:1  And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah his youngest son king in his stead; for the band of men that came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the eldest. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned.

Then the inhabitants of Jerusalem appointed his youngest son, Ahaziah, as king in his place. For the robbers of the Arabians, who had fallen upon the camp, had put to death all those who were greater by birth before him. And so Ahaziah, the son of Jehoram, reigned as king of Judah.

At that time, there was a prophet of the Lord there, named Oded. And going out to meet the army arriving in Samaria, he said to them: “Behold, the Lord, the God of your fathers, having become angry against Judah, has delivered them into your hands. But you have killed them by atrocities, so that your cruelty has reached up to heaven.
