The Bible in Its Traditions

2 Corinthians 1:0; 2:1–11:33

Byz Nes V S TR

But I determined this within myself, that I would not come again to you in sorrow.

Byz Nes V TR
S

For if I make you sorrowful, then who is he who makes me glad if not the [one] which is made sorrowful by me?

For if I make you sad, who can make me happy, but him whom I made sad?

Byz Nes S TR
V

And I wrote this very thing to you, lest when I came, I should have sorrow from those from whom I ought to have joy, having confidence in you all that my joy is [the joy] of you all.

And so, I wrote this same thing to you, so that I might not, when I arrive, add sorrow to sorrow for those with whom I ought to rejoice, having confidence in you in all things, so that my joy may be entirely yours.

Byz Nes V TR
S

For out of much affliction and distress of heart I wrote to you, through many tears, not that you might be made sorrowful, but that you might know the love which I have more abundantly towards you.

For out of great affliction and anguish of heart, I wrote you with many tears; not to make you feel distressed, but that you may know the abundant love I have for you.

Byz TR
Nes V
S

Now if anyone has caused grief, he has not grieved me, but in part-lest I burden you all.

But if any hath caused sorrow, he hath caused sorrow, not to me, but in part (that I press not too heavily) to you all.

But if anyone has caused grief, he has not grieved me only, but to a certain degree all of you, therefore the news will not be a shock to you.

Byz Nes TR

Sufficient to such a person is this punishment which was [inflicted] by the majority,

Let this rebuke be sufficient for someone like this, for it has been brought by many.

The rebuke of many persons is sufficient for such a man.

Byz V S
Nes TR

so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest somehow such a person be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.

so that contrariwise ye should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his overmuch sorrow.

Byz

V

Therefore I appeal to you to reaffirm [your] love towards him.

Wherefore I beseech you to confirm [your] love toward him.

Because of this, I beg you to confirm your charity toward him.

Byz Nes TR
V
S

For to this end I also wrote, so that I might put you to the test, [to see] if you are obedient in all things.

It was for this reason, also, that I wrote, so that I might know, by testing you, whether you would be obedient in all things.

For that is why I wrote you, that I might know by your word whether you are obedient in all things.

Byz Nes V

10  And to whom you forgive anything, I also [forgive;] for if indeed I have forgiven anything, [the ]one whom I have forgiven, [I have done so] for your sakes in the presence of Christ,

10  To whom you forgive anything, I forgive also; for anything which I have forgiven, to whomever I forgave it, it is for your sakes I forgave it in the presence of Christ

12  Now when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ, and a door was opened to me by YHWH,

12  And when I had arrived at Troas, because of the Gospel of Christ, and a door had opened to me in the Lord,

12  Furthermore, when I came to Troas with the gospel of Christ, and a door was opened to me of the LORD,

13  I had no rest in my spirit, because I did not find Titus my brother; but saying farewell to them, I departed for Macedonia.

13  I could not rest in my spirit, because I did not find Titus my brother; hence I took leave of them, and left for Mac-e-doÆni-a.

14  Now thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and making known through us the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.

14  But thanks be unto God, who always leadeth us in triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest through us the savor of his knowledge in every place.

Byz

15  For we are the fragrance of Christ to God among those being saved, and among those perishing.

15  For we are a sweet savor of Christ unto God, in them that are saved, and in them that perish;

15  For we are the sweet fragrance of Christ for God, both with those who are being saved and with those who are perishing.

16  To some we are the fragrance of death [leading] to death, but to others the fragrance of life [leading] to life. And who is sufficient for these things?

16  to the one a savor from death unto death; to the other a savor from life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

16  To the one, certainly, the fragrance is of death unto death. But to the other, the fragrance is of life unto life. And concerning these things, who is so suitable?

Byz Nes S TR

17  For we are not as the rest, corrupting the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ.

17  For we are not like many others, adulterating the Word of God. But instead, we speak with sincerity: from God, before God, and in Christ.

3:1  Do we begin again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you, or [letters] of recommendation from you?

Are we beginning again to commend ourselves? or need we, as do some, epistles of commendation to you or from you?

Must we begin again to commend ourselves? Or are we in need (as some are) of epistles of commendation for you, or from you?

Byz

3:2  You are our letter, having been written in our hearts, being known and being read by all men;

Ye are our epistle, written in our hearts, known and read of all men;

Byz Nes V TR

3:3  being made known that you are [the] letter of Christ, which was ministered by us, having been written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not in tablets of stone but in tablets of flesh, [namely] in hearts.

For you are known to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the spirit of the Living God; not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of the living heart.

3:4  And we have such trust through Christ toward God.

And such confidence have we through Christ to God-ward

Such is the trust that we have through Christ toward God.

Byz Nes S TR

3:5  Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to consider anything as from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God,

It is not that we are adequate to think anything of ourselves, as if anything was from us. But our adequacy is from God.

Byz Nes TR

3:6  who also has made us efficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of [the] letter but of [the] Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit makes alive.

And he has made us suitable ministers of the New Testament, not in the letter, but in the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Who has made us worthy to be ministers of the new covenant; not of the letter, but the Spirit: for the letter of the law punishes with death, but the Spirit gives life.

3:7  Now if the ministry of death, having been engraved in letters on stones, came to be with glory, so that the sons of Israel could not look intently into the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, the [glory which] [was] passing away,

But if the ministration of death, written, [and] engraven on stones, came with glory, so that the children of Israel could not look stedfastly upon the face of Moses for the glory of his face; which [glory] was passing away

But if the ministration of death, engraved with letters upon stones, was in glory, (so much so that the sons of Israel were not able to gaze intently upon the face of Moses, because of the glory of his countenance) even though this ministration was ineffective,

Byz V

3:8  how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious?

how shall not rather the ministration of the spirit be with glory?

Why then shall not the ministration of the Spirit be more glorious?

Byz Nes TR

3:9  For if the ministry of condemnation [had] glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory.

For if the ministration of condemnation is with glory, so much more is the ministration of justice abundant in glory.

Byz TR Nes

3:10  For even that which has been glorified has not been glorified in this respect, because of the surpassing glory.

10  And neither was it glorified by means of an excellent glory, though it was made illustrious in its own way.

10  Just as that which was not glorious became glorified, in comparison with that, this excels in glory.

Byz Nes S TR

3:11  For if that which passes away [was] glorious, then that which remains is much more glorious.

11  For if even what was temporary has its glory, then what is lasting has an even greater glory.

3:12  Therefore, having such hope, we use great boldness of speech-

12  Seeing therefore that we have such hope, we conduct ourselves bravely

12  Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech

Byz Nes V S TR

3:13  and not as Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the sons of Israel could not look intently at the end of what was passing away.

Byz S TR

3:14  But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is removed in Christ.

14  but their minds were hardened: for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant the same veil remaineth, it not being revealed [to them] that it is done away in Christ.

14  for their minds were obtuse. And, even until this present day, the very same veil, in the readings from the Old Testament, remains not taken away (though, in Christ, it is taken away).

Byz Nes V TR

3:15  But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart.

15  But even unto this day, whenever the books of Moses are read, the veil is upon their hearts.

Byz Nes

3:16  But whenever one turns to YHWH, the veil is taken away.

16  But when they will have been converted to the Lord, then the veil shall be taken away.

16  Nevertheless whenever a man turns to the LORD, the veil is taken away.

Byz

3:17  Now YHWH is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord [is], there is freedom.

17  Now the Lord is the Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, [there] is liberty.

Byz Nes TR

3:18  But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of YHWH, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

18  Yet truly, all of us, as we gaze upon the unveiled glory of the face of the Lord, are transfigured into the same image, from one glory to another. And this is done by the Spirit of the Lord.

18  But we all, with open faces, see as in a mirror the glory of the LORD, and we shall be transformed into the same likeness, from one glory to another, just as the Spirit comes from the LORD.

4:1  Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we received mercy, we do not despair,

FOR this reason we are not weary of the ministry in which we are engaged, just as we are not weary of the mercies that have been upon us;

Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;

Byz Nes S

4:2  but we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor falsifying the word of God, but by the disclosure of the truth, commending ourselves to every man's conscience before God.

For we renounce dishonorable and hidden acts, not walking by craftiness, nor by adulterating the Word of God. Instead, by the manifestation of truth, we commend ourselves to the conscience of each man before God.

But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

4:4  among whom the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, so that the illumination of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not shine on them.

To those in this world whose minds have been blinded by God, because they did not believe, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the likeness of God, should shine on them.

In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

4:5  For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus YHWH, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake.

For we are not preaching about ourselves, but about Jesus Christ our Lord. We are merely your servants through Jesus.

Byz

4:6  Because it is God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who shined in our hearts to give [the] light of the knowledge of the glory of God in [the] face of Jesus Christ.

Seeing it is God, that said, Light shall shine out of darkness, who shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

For God, who told the light to shine out of darkness, has shined a light into our hearts, to illuminate the knowledge of the splendor of God, in the person of Christ Jesus.

10  We ever carry around the mortification of Jesus in our bodies, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.

10  For we always bear in our bodies the death of Jesus, that the life of Jesus might also be made manifest in our bodies.

Byz Nes V

4:11  For we who are living are always handed over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifest in our body.

4:12  So then death is working in us, but life in you.

4:13  And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to that which is written, "I believed, and therefore I spoke,"we also believe, therefore we also speak,

4:16  Therefore we do not despair, but even if our outward man is being destroyed, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.

16  For this reason, we are not insufficient. But it is as though our outer man is corrupted, while our inner man is renewed from day to day.

4:17  For our momentary light affliction is working out for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory,

17  For though our tribulation is, at the present time, brief and light, it accomplishes in us the weight of a sublime eternal glory, beyond measure.

Then too, we who are in this tabernacle groan under the burden, because we do not want to be stripped, but rather to be clothed from above, so that what is mortal may be absorbed by life.

While we are in this earthly house, we groan because of its weight: yet we are unwilling to leave it, but rather wish to add to it, so that death will be overcome by life.

7:10  For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, without regret; but worldly sorrow produces death.

10  For the sorrow that is according to God accomplishes a repentance which is steadfast unto salvation. But the sorrow that is of the world accomplishes death.

12  But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them that desire an occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.

12  But what I do, I will continue to do, so as to give no occasion to those who seek an occasion; and that, in whatever they boast, they may not be found equal to us;

13  For false apostles, such as these deceitful workers, are presenting themselves as if they were Apostles of Christ.

11:14  And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.

14  There is no marvel in this; for if Satan disguises himself as the angel of light,

11:15  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

15  It is no great thing if his ministers also pose as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

16  I say again, let no man think me foolish; but if [ye do], yet as foolish receive me, that I also may glory a little.

16  I say again. And let no one consider me to be foolish. Or, at least, accept me as if I were foolish, so that I also may glory a small amount.

11:23  Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I [am] even more: in labors far more, in beatings immeasurably, in imprisonments far more, in deaths often.

23  They are the ministers of Christ (I speak as if I were less wise); more so am I: with many more labors, with numerous imprisonments, with wounds beyond measure, with frequent mortifications.

23  If they are ministers of Christ, I speak as a fool, I am greater than they; in labor more than they, in wounds more than they, in imprisonments more frequent than they, and in danger of death many times.
