1  And it came to pass in Iconium that they went in together into the synagogue of the Jews, and they spoke in a way so that a great multitude, both of the Jews and of the Greeks, believed.

1  Now it happened in Iconium that they entered together into the synagogue of the Jews, and they spoke in such a way that a copious multitude of both Jews and Greeks believed.

1  AND Paul and BarÆna-bas entered into the Jewish synagogue and addressed the people in such manner that a great many of the Jews and of the Greeks believed.

2  But the disbelieving Jews aroused and embittered the souls of the Gentiles against the brothers.

2  But the Jews that were disobedient stirred up the souls of the Gentiles, and made them evil affected against the brethren.

2  Yet truly, the Jews who were unbelieving had incited and enflamed the souls of the Gentiles against the brothers.

3  Therefore they spent a considerable time there, speaking boldly in YHWH, who was bearing witness to the word of His grace, giving signs and wonders to take place by their hands.

3  And so, they remained for a long time, acting faithfully in the Lord, offering testimony to the Word of his grace, providing signs and wonders done by their hands.

3  So they remained there for a long time, and spoke boldly concerning the LORD, and he gave them testimony to the word of his grace, by means of signs and wonders which he performed by their hands.

4  And the multitude of the city was divided: and some were with the Jews, and others with the apostles.

4  Then the multitude of the city was divided. And certainly, some were with the Jews, yet truly others were with the Apostles.

4  But the people of the city were divided: part held with the Jews, and part followed the apostles.

5  And when an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and the[ ]Jews, together with their rulers, to mistreat and to stone them,

5  Now when an assault had been planned by the Gentiles and the Jews with their leaders, so that they might treat them with contempt and stone them,

6  they became aware of it and fled to the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra and Derbe, and to the surrounding region.

6  they, realizing this, fled together to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the entire surrounding region. And they were evangelizing in that place.

6  And when they became aware of it, they departed and took refuge in LyÆstra and Derbe, cities of Lyc-aoÆni-a, and the villages near by.

7  And there, they were preaching the gospel.

8  And a certain man in Lystra, powerless in his feet, was sitting, lame from his mother's womb, who had never walked.

8  And at Lystra there sat a certain man, impotent in his feet, a cripple from his mother`s womb, who never had walked.

8  And there dwelt in the city of LyÆstra a cripple who had been lame from his motherÆs womb, who never had walked.

9  This [man] heard Paul speaking; who, gazing intently on him and seeing that he had faith to be healed,

9  He heard Paul speak; and when Paul saw him and perceived that there was faith in him to be healed,

10  said with a loud voice, "Stand up straight on your feet!"And he was jumping and walking about.

10  He said to him with a loud voice, I say to you, in the name of our LORD Jesus Christ, stand upright on your feet. And he leaped and walked.

11  And the crowds, seeing what Paul did, raised their voice, saying in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have been made like men and have come down to us!"

11  And when the multitude saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voice, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.

11  But when the crowds had seen what Paul had done, they lifted up their voice in the Lycaonian language, saying, “The gods, having taken the likenesses of men, have descended to us!”

12  And Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, since he was the leader in speaking.

12  And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercury, because he was the chief speaker.

12  So they called BarÆna-bas, the chief of the gods; and Paul, they called Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.

13  And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was before their city, bearing bulls and garlands to the gates, together with the crowds, was desiring to sacrifice [to them.]

13  Then the priest of the chief of gods whose shrine was outside the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gate of the courtyard where they stayed, and he wanted to offer sacrifices to them.

14  But when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard this, they tore their clothes and rushed in to the crowd, crying out

14  When BarÆna-bas and Paul heard of this, they rent their clothes, and leaped to their feet and went out to the crowd, crying out

15  and saying, "Men! Why are you doing these things? We men are of the same nature as you, preaching the gospel to you, that you must turn from these useless things to the living God, who made the heaven, and the earth, and the sea, and all the things in them,

15  and saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and bring you good tidings, that ye should turn from these vain things unto a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that in them is

15  and saying: “Men, why would you do this? We also are mortals, men like yourselves, preaching to you to be converted, from these vain things, to the living God, who made heaven and earth and the sea and all that is in them.

16  who in the generations having gone by permitted all the Gentiles to walk in their ways.

16  In previous generations, he permitted all nations to walk in their own ways.

16  Who in generations past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.

17  And yet He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, giving to you rain from heaven and fruit bearing seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness."

17  But certainly, he did not leave himself without testimony, doing good from heaven, giving rains and fruitful seasons, filling their hearts with food and gladness.”

17  Nevertheless he left himself without testimony, in that he bestowed good on them from heaven, and gave them rain, and caused the fruits to grow in their seasons, and satisfied their hearts with food and gladness.

18  And saying these things, they scarcely stopped the crowds from sacrificing to them.

18  And by saying these things, they were barely able to restrain the crowds from immolating to them.

18  And even though they said these things they had difficulty in restraining the people from offering sacrifice to them.

19  But there arrived from Antioch and Iconium [certain ]Jews, and having persuaded the crowds and having stoned Paul, they dragged [him] outside the city, thinking he was dead.

19  But there came Jews thither from Antioch and Iconium: and having persuaded the multitudes, they stoned Paul, and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.

19  And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.

20  But when the disciples encircled him, he stood and entered into the city. And the next day he went out together with Barnabas to Derbe.

20  But as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and entered into the city: and on the morrow he went forth with Barnabas to Derbe.

20  Howbeit, as the disciples gathered around him, he rose up and entered again into the city: and the next day he departed from there with BarÆna-bas, and they came to the city of DerÆbe.

21  And having preached the gospel to that city and having made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, and Iconium, and Antioch,

22  strengthening the souls of the disciples, urging [them] to continue in the faith, [saying, "]Through many tribulations we must enter into the kingdom of God."

23  And having chosen elders for them in every church, [and ]having prayed with fasting, they commended them to YHWH in whom they had believed.

24  And having crossed Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.

24  And traveling by way of Pisidia, they arrived in Pamphylia.

25  And having spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.

26  From there they sailed to Antioch, from where they were commended to the grace of God for the work which they had completed.

27  Now arriving and gathering the church together, they related all that God had done with them, and that He had opened the door of faith for the Gentiles.

15:1  And certain men coming down from Judea were teaching the brothers, "If you are not circumcised in the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved."

1  AND certain men who had come down from JudµÆa taught the brethren, Unless you be circumcised in accordance with the custom of the law you cannot be saved.

15:2  Therefore when there arose a serious dissension and debate with Paul and Barnabus, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and some others of them should go up to the apostles and elders in Jerusalem concerning this issue.

15:3  Therefore, being sent forth by the church, they were passing through Phoenicia and Samaria, telling in detail [about] the conversion of the Gentiles; and they were causing great joy to all the brothers.

3  They were given an escort and sent on their way by the church, and they traveled through all Phoe-niÆci-a and the territory of the Sa-marÆi-tans, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles; and they caused great joy to all the brethren.

15:4  And having come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders; and they declared all that God had done with them.

4  And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church and the apostles and the elders, and they rehearsed all things that God had done with them.

4  On their arrival at Jerusalem, they were received by the church, and by the apostles and elders; and they reported everything that God had done with them.

15:5  But some of those from the sect of the Pharisees rose up, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses."

5  But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

15:6  And the apostles and elders gathered together to see about this matter.

6  Then the apostles and elders assembled to consider this matter.

15:7  And after much dispute, Peter arose and said to them: "Men, brothers, you know that from early days God chose among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe.

7  And when there had been much questioning, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Brethren, ye know that a good while ago God made choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

7  And after a great contention had taken place, Peter rose up and said to them: “Noble brothers, you know that, in recent days, God has chosen from among us, by my mouth, Gentiles to hear the word of the Gospel and to believe.

15:8  And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as also [He did] to us,

8  And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

15:9  and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

9  And he distinguished nothing between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

9  And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

15:10  Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

15:11  But through the grace of YHWH Jesus, we believe that we will be saved in the same manner as they."

11  But by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we believe in order to be saved, in the same manner also as them.”

11  But we believe that through the grace of the LORD Jesus Christ, we shall be saved even as they.

15:12  Then all the multitude stopped speaking and listened to Barnabas and Paul telling as many signs and wonders as God had done among the Gentiles through them.

12  Then the whole congregation was silent, and listened to Paul and Barnabas, who were declaring the miracles and signs among the Gentiles and everything which God had wrought by their hands.

15:13  Now after they had finished speaking, James answered, saying, "Men and brothers, listen to me

13  And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Brethren, hearken unto me

13  And when they had ceased speaking, James rose up and said, Men and brethren, hear me

15:14  Simeon has declared how God first visited [them ]to take from the Gentiles a people for His name.

14  Simon has explained in what manner God first visited, so as to take from the Gentiles a people to his name.

14  Simon Peter has told you how God from the beginning chose a people from the Gentiles for his name.

15:15  And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written

15:16  "After this I will return, and I will build again the tabernacle of David, which has fallen; and its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it,

16  After these things I will return, And I will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen; And I will build again the ruins thereof, And I will set it up

15:17  in order that the rest of men may seek out YHWH, and all the Gentiles who are called by My name, says the YHWH who does all these things.'

17  That the residue of men may seek after the Lord, And all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called,

17  so that the rest of men may seek the Lord, along with all the nations over whom my name has been invoked, says the Lord, who does these things.’

15:18  "Known from everlasting to God are all His works.

18  Saith the Lord, who maketh these things known from of old.

18  To the Lord, his own work has been known from eternity.

15:19  Therefore I judge that we must not cause trouble for those who are turning to God from [among] the Gentiles;

19  Because of this, I judge that those who were converted to God from among the Gentiles are not to be disturbed,

19  Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God

15:20  but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and [from] blood.

20  but instead that we write to them, that they should keep themselves from the defilement of idols, and from fornication, and from whatever has been suffocated, and from blood.

20  But let us send word to them that they abstain from defilement by sacrifices to idols, and from fornication, and from animals strangled, and from blood.

15:21  "For Moses has had from ancient generations those who proclaim him in each city, being read in the synagogues from one Sabbath to another."

21  For Moses from generations of old hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath.

21  For Moses, from the very early centuries, had preachers in the synagogues in every city to read his books on every sabbath day.

15:22  Then it seemed best to the apostles and the elders, together with the whole church, to send men being chosen from them to Antioch, together with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas who was also named Barsabas, and Silas, leading men among the brothers.

22  Then it pleased the Apostles and elders, with the whole Church, to choose men from among them, and to send to Antioch, with Paul and Barnabas, and Judas, who was surnamed Barsabbas, and Silas, preeminent men among the brothers,

22  Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, chose men from among themselves and sent them to AnÆti-och with Paul and BarÆna-bas; namely, Judas who is called BarÆsa-bas and Silas, men who were leaders among the brethren

15:23  Writing by their hand these things: The apostles, the elders, and the brothers, to the brothers in Antioch, and Syria, and Cilicia who are of the Gentiles: Greetings.

23  and they wrote [thus] by them, The apostles and the elders, brethren, unto the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greeting

23  And they wrote a letter and sent it by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren to the brethren of the Gentiles in AnÆti-och and SyÆria and Ci-liÆci-a, greetings.

15:24  Inasmuch as we have heard that some went out from among us and troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, 'that you must be circumcised and keep the law'-to whom we gave no [such] command-

24  Forasmuch as we have heard that certain who went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls; to whom we gave no commandment;

24  We have heard that certain men have gone out and disturbed you with words, thus upsetting your souls, saying, You must be circumcised, and keep the law: on these things we have never commanded them.

15:25  it seemed best to us, having come to be of the same mind, to send men being chosen to you, with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

25  Therefore, we have considered the matter while we are assembled, and we have chosen and sent men to you with our beloved Paul and BarÆna-bas,

15:26  men having given over their lives for the sake of the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

26  men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

26  Men who have dedicated their lives for the name of our LORD Jesus Christ.

15:27  We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who will also tell you the same things by word [of mouth].

27  Therefore, we have sent Judas and Silas, who themselves also will, with the spoken word, reaffirm to you the same things.

27  And we have sent with them Judas and Silas, so that they may tell you the same things by word of mouth.

15:28  For it seemed best to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to put on you no greater burden except for these necessary things

28  For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to impose no further burden upon you, other than these necessary things

28  For it is the will of the Holy Spirit and of us, to lay upon you no additional burden than these necessary things;

15:29  that you abstain from meat offered to idols, and from blood, and from [anything] strangled, and from fornication; from which keeping yourselves back, you will do well. Farewell.

15:30  Then having been dismissed, they came to Antioch; and having gathered the multitude together, they delivered the letter.

30  Now when those who were sent came to AnÆti-och and when the whole people were gathered together, they delivered the epistle

15:31  And when they had read it, they rejoiced over its encouragement.

31  Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.

15:32  Now Judas and Silas, themselves being prophets also, encouraged and strengthened the brothers with many words.

32  And Judas and Silas, being themselves also prophets, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.

32  But Judas and Silas, being also prophets themselves, consoled the brothers with many words, and they were strengthened.

15:33  And when time had passed, they were dismissed with peace from the brothers to the apostles.

33  And after they had spent some time [there], they were dismissed in peace from the brethren unto those that had sent them forth.

15:34  - - -

34  [But it seemed good unto Silas to abide there.]

34  Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.

15:35  But Paul and Barnabas spent time in Antioch, teaching and preaching the good news of the word of YHWH, with many others also.

35  And Paul and Barnabas remained at Antioch, with many others, teaching and evangelizing the Word of the Lord.

35  Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

15:36  Then after some days Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us return now and visit our brothers in each city in which we proclaimed the word of YHWH, and see how they are doing."

15:37  But Barnabas desired to take along with them John called Mark.

37  And Barnabas was minded to take with them John also, who was called Mark.

37  Now BarÆna-bas wanted to take John who was also called Mark.

15:38  But Paul considered it fitting not to take along with them the one who withdrew from them in Pamphylia, and who had not gone together with them to the work.

38  But Paul thought not good to take with them him who withdrew from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.

38  But Paul was saying that he ought not to be received, since he withdrew from them at Pamphylia, and he had not gone with them in the work.

15:39  Therefore a sharp disagreement arose so that they were separated from one another. And Barnabas, taking along Mark, sailed to Cyprus.

39  And there arose a sharp contention, so that they parted asunder one from the other, and Barnabas took Mark with him, and sailed away unto Cyprus;

39  And because of this dispute, Paul and BarÆna-bas separated from each other: and BarÆna-bas took Mark, and they sailed to CyÆprus,

15:40  But Paul, choosing Silas, departed, being given over to the grace of God by the brothers.

40  And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

15:41  And he passed through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

41  And he traveled through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the Churches, instructing them to keep the precepts of the Apostles and the elders.

41  And he traveled through SyrÆi-a and CiliÆcia, establishing churches.

16:1  Now he arrived at Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there named Timothy, the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed, but his father was Greek,

1  THEN he arrived at the city of DerÆbe and LysÆtra: there was there a disciple whose name was TimoÆthe-us, the son of a Jewess convert, but whose father was a SyrÆian.

16:2  who had a good testimony by the brothers in Lystra and Iconium.

2  The same was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.

2  And all the disciples of LysÆtra and I-coÆnium gave good testimony concerning him.

16:3  Paul wanted [Timothy] to accompany him, and taking him, he circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was Greek.

3  Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews that were in those parts: for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

3  Paul wanted to take this man with him, so he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in that region; for they all knew that his father was a SyrÆi-an.

16:4  And as they were going through the cities, they were delivering to them the decrees to keep, which had been decided by the apostles and the elders at Jerusalem.

16:5  Therefore the churches were strengthened in the faith, and were growing in number each day.

16:6  Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the Galatian region, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit from speaking the word in Asia,

6  Then they traveled through the countries of PhrygÆi-a and Ga-laÆtia, and the Holy Spirit forbade them to speak the word of God in Asia Minor.

16:7  having come to Mysia they attempted to go to Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them.

7  and when they were come over against Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia; and the Spirit of Jesus suffered them not;

16:8  So they bypassed Mysia, and went down to Troas.

8  Then, when they had crossed through Mysia, they descended to Troas.

8  And when they had left MysÆia, they came to the country of TroÆas.

16:9  And a vision appeared during the night to Paul. A certain man of Macedonia was standing, urging him, and saying, "Come across to Macedonia and help us."

9  And a vision in the night was revealed to Paul of a certain man of Macedonia, standing and pleading with him, and saying: “Cross into Macedonia and help us!”

9  And, in a vision of the night, there appeared to Paul a man resembling a Mac-edoÆni- an, standing and begging him, saying, Come over to Mac-e-doÆni-a and help me.

16:10  Now when he saw the vision, immediately we sought to go out to Macedonia, concluding that YHWH had called us to preach the gospel to them.

10  Then, after he saw the vision, immediately we sought to set out for Macedonia, having been assured that God had called us to evangelize to them.

10  And after Paul had seen this vision, we were desirous to leave for Mac-e-doÆni-a at once, because we understood that our LORD had called us to preach the gospel to them.

16:11  Therefore, putting to sea from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and the next day came to Neapolis,

11  And sailing from Troas, taking a direct path, we arrived at Samothrace, and on the following day, at Neapolis,

11  When we sailed from TroÆas, we came in a direct course to Sam-o-thraÆcia, and from thence on the following day, we came to the city Ne-apÆo-lis;

16:12  and from there to Philippi, which is chief of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were spending some days in that very city.

12  and from thence to Philippi, which is a city of Macedonia, the first of the district, a [Roman] colony: and we were in this city tarrying certain days.

16:13  And on the Sabbath day we went outside the city beside a river, where prayer was customarily made; and having sat down we spoke to the women who assembled together [there].

13  Then, on the Sabbath day, we were walking outside the gate, beside a river, where there seemed to be a prayer gathering. And sitting down, we were speaking with the women who had assembled.

16:14  And a certain woman named Lydia, a dealer of purple cloth of the city of Thyatira, who worshipped God, heard us, whose heart YHWH opened to give heed to the things spoken by Paul.

14  And a certain woman, named LydÆi-a, a seller of purple of the city of Thy-a-tiÆra, feared God; her heart was so touched by our LORD that she listened to what Paul said.

16:15  And when she and her household were baptized, she urged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to YHWH, come to my house and stay."So she persuaded us.

15  And when she had been baptized, with her household, she pleaded with us, saying: “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, enter into my house and lodge there.” And she convinced us.

15  And she was baptized together with her household, and she begged us, saying, If you are sincerely convinced that I believe in our LORD, come and stay in my house; and she urged us strongly.

16:16  Now it came to pass, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl, having a spirit of Python, met us, who brought much profit to her masters by fortune telling.

16  Then it happened that, as we were going out to prayer, a certain girl, having a spirit of divination, met with us. She was a source of great profit to her masters, through her divining.

16  And it came to pass, as we went to the house of prayer, we were met by a young girl who was possessed of a spirit, and who did for her masters a great business by fortune telling.

16:17  This girl, following after Paul and us, was crying out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation."

17  The same following after Paul and us cried out, saying, These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim unto you the way of salvation.

17  And she followed Paul and us, crying and saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, and they preach to you the way of salvation.

16:18  And this she did for many days. But Paul, being greatly annoyed and turning around, said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her."And he came out in that very hour.

16:19  And when her masters saw that the hope of their profit was gone, they took Paul and Silas, and dragged [them] to the marketplace to the rulers.

19  But when her masters saw that the hope of their gain was gone, they laid hold on Paul and Silas, and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers,

19  But her masters, seeing that the hope of their profit went away, apprehended Paul and Silas, and they brought them to the rulers at the courthouse.

16:20  And bringing them to the magistrates they said, "These men, being Jews, are agitating our city;

20  and when they had brought them unto the magistrates, they said, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

16:21  and they are proclaiming customs which are not lawful for us to receive or to do, since we are Romans."

21  and set forth customs which it is not lawful for us to receive, or to observe, being Romans.

21  And they preach customs to us which are not lawful for us to accept and practice, because we are Romans.

16:22  And the crowd rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore their clothes and ordered [men] to beat [them] with rods.

22  And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent their garments off them, and commanded to beat them with rods.

22  And a large crowd gathered against them. Then the soldiers stripped them of their clothes and gave command to scourge them.

16:23  And when they laid many strokes on them, they cast them into prison, commanding the prison keeper to keep them securely;

23  And when they had inflicted many scourges on them, they cast them into prison, instructing the guard to watch them diligently.

23  And when they had flogged them severely, they cast them into prison, charging the jailer to watch them carefully. Paul and Silas in prison.

16:24  who, having received such a command, cast them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.

24  And since he had received this kind of order, he cast them into the interior prison cell, and he restricted their feet with stocks.

24  He, having received the charge, brought them in and put them into the inner chamber of the prison, and fastened their feet in the stocks.

16:25  Now about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.

25  Then, in the middle of the night, Paul and Silas were praying and praising God. And those who were also in custody were listening to them.

25  Now at midnight Paul and Silas prayed and glorified God; and the prisoners heard them.

16:26  And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and all the bonds were loosed.

26  Yet truly, there was a sudden earthquake, so great that the foundations of the prison were moved. And immediately all the doors were opened, and the bindings of everyone were released.

16:27  And becoming awake, the prison keeper, seeing the doors of the prison open, drawing a sword, he was about to kill himself, supposing the prisoners to have escaped.

27  Then the prison guard, having been jarred awake, and seeing the doors of the prison open, drew his sword and intended to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had fled.

16:28  But Paul called out with a loud voice, saying, "Do not harm yourself, for we are all here."

16:29  And asking for a light he rushed in, and he came trembling, and fell before Paul and Silas,

29  Then calling for a light, he entered. And trembling, he fell before the feet of Paul and Silas.

29  Then he lighted a lamp, and sprang in, trembling, and threw himself at the feet of Paul and Silas.

16:30  and he brought them forth outside and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

30  and brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

16:31  And they said, "Believe on YHWH Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved, you and your household."

31  So they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and then you will be saved, with your household.”

31  And they said to him, Believe in our LORD Jesus Christ, and both you and your household will be saved.

16:32  And they spoke the word of YHWH to him and to all those in his house.

16:33  And taking them along in that same hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he and all his family were baptized.

33  And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, immediately.

33  And he, taking them in the same hour of the night, washed their scourges. And he was baptized, and next his entire household.

16:34  And bringing them up into his house, he set a meal before them; and he rejoiced with his whole house, having believed in God.

34  And when he had brought them into his own house, he set a table for them. And he was joyous, with his entire household, believing in God.

16:35  Now when it became day, the magistrates sent the officers, saying, "Release those men."

35  And when daylight had arrived, the magistrates sent the attendants, saying, “Release those men.”

35  In the morning, the soldiers sent the lictors to tell the prison warden to release those men.

16:36  And the prison keeper announced these words to Paul, saying, "The magistrates have sent so that you may be released. Now therefore depart, and go in peace."

36  And the jailor reported the words to Paul, [saying], The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore come forth, and go in peace.

36  But the prison guard reported these words to Paul: “The magistrates have sent to have you released. Now therefore, depart. Go in peace.”

16:37  But Paul said to them, "They beat us publicly, although we were uncondemned Romans, and they cast [us] into prison, and now do they cast us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and lead us out."

37  But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men that are Romans, and have cast us into prison; and do they now cast us out privily? Nay verily; but let them come themselves and bring us out.

37  But Paul said to him, Not having committed any offense, they flogged us, Roman citizens, in the presence of the people, and they cast us into prison; and now do they let us out secretly? No verily; let them come themselves and fetch us out.

16:38  And the officers related to the magistrates these words, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans.

38  and let us drive them away.” Then the attendants reported these words to the magistrates. And upon hearing that they were Romans, they were afraid.

38  And the lictors went and told the soliers these words which were told to them: and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were afraid.

16:39  And coming, they appealed to them, and bringing them out, they asked them to depart from the city.

39  and they came and besought them; and when they had brought them out, they asked them to go away from the city.

16:40  And coming out from the prison, they entered into [the house of] Lydia; and seeing the brothers, they encouraged them and departed.

40  And they went out of the prison, and entered into [the house] of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

17:1  Now traveling through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.

17:2  And according to Paul's custom, he went in to them, and for three Sabbaths he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

2  and Paul, as his custom was, went in unto them, and for three sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

2  Then Paul, according to custom, entered to them. And for three Sabbaths he disputed with them about the Scriptures,

17:3  interpreting and pointing out that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer, and to arise from the dead, and [saying ]that "This is the Christ, Jesus, whom I proclaim to you."

3  opening and alleging that it behooved the Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom, [said he,] I proclaim unto you, is the Christ.

3  Interpreting and proving that Christ had to suffer, and rise again from the dead; and that he is the same Jesus Christ whom I preach to you.

17:4  And some of them were persuaded and were joined with Paul and Silas, both of the devout Greeks, a great multitude, and not a few of the chief women.

4  And some of them believed and joined Paul and Silas; and many of them were Greeks who feared God, and many of them were well known women, a goodly number.

17:5  And the Jews who did not believe [ ]took some wicked men from the marketplace, and forming a mob, [they ]threw the city into disorder, and came upon the house of Jason, and sought to bring them to the people.

5  But the Jews, being moved with jealousy, took unto them certain vile fellows of the rabble, and gathering a crowd, set the city on an uproar; and assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them forth to the people.

17:6  But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brothers to the rulers of the city, crying out, "The men who have upset the whole world, these have come here, too;

6  And when they found them not, they dragged Jason and certain brethren before the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

6  And when they failed to find them there, they dragged forth Jason and the brethren who were there and brought them before the authorities of the city, crying, These are the men who have created disturbances throughout the world, and behold, they have come here also,

17:7  whom Jason has received; and these all practice contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king-Jesus."

7  and Jason has received them. And all these men act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”

17:8  And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things.

8  The authorities of the city and all the people were alarmed when they heard these things.

17:9  And having taken the security bond from Jason and the rest, they released them.

9  And when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

9  So they took bail from Jason and some of the brethren and then let them go.

17:10  Then the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away during the night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.

10  And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Beroea: who when they were come thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

10  Yet truly, the brothers promptly sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea. And when they had arrived, they entered the synagogue of the Jews.

17:11  And these were more noble-minded than[ ]those in Thessalonica, who received the word with all readiness, each day examining the Scriptures [to see ]whether these things might be so.

11  For the Jews there were more liberal than the Jews who were in Thes-sa-lo-niÆca, in that they gladly heard the word daily, and searched the scriptures to find out if these things were so.

17:12  Therefore many of them believed, and not a few of the prominent Greek women and men.

12  And indeed, many believed among them, as well as not a few among the honorable Gentile men and women.

17:13  But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul in Berea, they came there also, agitating the crowds.

13  But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was proclaimed of Paul at Beroea also, they came thither likewise, stirring up and troubling the multitudes.

13  Then, when the Jews of Thessalonica had realized that the Word of God was also preached by Paul at Beroea, they went there also, stirring up and disturbing the multitude.

17:14  Then immediately the brothers sent Paul away, to go toward the sea; but both Silas and Timothy remained there.

14  And then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul to go as far as to the sea: and Silas and Timothy abode there still.

17:15  And those conducting Paul brought him to Athens; and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy, that as quickly as possible they should come to him, they departed.

15  And those who escorted Paul went with him as far as the city of Athens: and when they were leaving him, they received from him an epistle to Silas and Ti-moÆthe-us requesting them to come to him in haste.

17:16  And in Athens, while Paul waited for them, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was full of idols.

16  Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred up within him, seeing the city given over to idolatry.

17:17  Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the [Gentile] worshippers, and in the marketplace daily with those coming by.

17:18  And also some of the Epicurean and of the Stoic philosophers were conversing with him. And some were saying, "What does this seed-picker wish to say?"But others [said], "He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign deities,"because he was preaching the good news of Jesus and the resurrection.

18  And certain also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, What would this babbler say? others, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.

18  Now certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were arguing with him. And some were saying, “What does this sower of the Word want to say?” Yet others were saying, “He seems to be an announcer for new demons.” For he was announcing to them Jesus and the Resurrection.

17:19  And taking hold of him, they brought [him] to the Areopagus, saying, "Are we able to know what this new doctrine is you speak about?

19  So they arrested him and brought him to the court house which is called Ar-e-opÆagus, and said to him, May we know what is this new doctrine which you preach?

17:20  For you are bringing some strange things to our ears. Therefore we desire to know what these things might mean."

20  For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

20  For you bring certain new ideas to our ears. And so we would like to know what these things mean.”

17:21  Now all the Athenians and the strangers staying there as visitors spent their time in nothing other than to say or to hear some new thing.

21  (Now all the Athenians, and arriving visitors, were occupying themselves with nothing other than speaking or hearing various new ideas.)

21  (For all the Athenians and the strangers who were there, were uninterested in anything except something new to tell or to hear.)

17:22  Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, "Men, Athenians, according to all things I perceive you as [being ]very religious;

22  When Paul stood in the court at Ar-eopÆa- gus, he said, Men of Athens, I see that above all things you are extravagant in the worship of idols.

17:23  for as I passed by and considered the objects of your worship, I found also an altar on which it had been inscribed: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, [Him] whom being ignorant of you worship, this [One] I announce to you

17:24  The God who made the world and all the things in it, Him being Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made by human hands,

24  God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

17:25  nor by the hands of men is He served, as though He needed anything, for He gives to all life, and breath, with respect to all things.

25  neither is he served by men`s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

25  Neither is he ministered to by human hands, nor is he in need of anything, for it is he who gave life and breath to all men.

17:26  And He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell upon all the face of the earth, and He ordained their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings,

26  And he has made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and he has appointed seasons by his command, and has set limits to the age of men;

17:27  [in order for them ]to seek YHWH, if perhaps indeed they might grope for Him and find [Him], and yet being indeed not far from each one of us;

27  that they should seek God, if haply they might feel after him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us

27  So that they should seek and search after God, and find him by means of his creations, because he is not far from any one of us

17:28  for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, 'For we are also His offspring.'

28  ‘For in him we live, and move, and exist.’ Just as some of your own poets have said. ‘For we are also of his family.’

17:29  "Therefore, being the offspring of God, we ought not to suppose that the Godhead is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and the imagination of man.

29  Therefore, since we are of the family of God, we must not consider gold or silver or precious stones, or the engravings of art and of the imagination of man, to be a representation of what is Divine.

29  Now therefore, man, being of the family of God, is not bounden to worship resemblances made of gold or silver or stone shapen by the skill and knowledge of man into resemblances of the Deity.

17:30  So then these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now He commands all men everywhere to repent,

30  And indeed, God, having looked down to see the ignorance of these times, has now announced to men that everyone everywhere should do penance.

30  For the times of ignorance God has made to pass, and at this time he has commanded all men, everywhere, to repent.

17:31  because He has appointed a day in which He is going to judge the world in righteousness by [the] Man whom He has appointed, having given proof to all, by raising Him from the dead."

31  inasmuch as he hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

31  For he has appointed a day on which he will judge the world in equity, through the man whom he has appointed, offering faith to all, by raising him from the dead.”

17:32  But when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some were scoffing, but others said, "We will hear you again concerning this."

32  And when they had heard about the Resurrection of the dead, indeed, some were derisive, while others said, “We will listen to you about this again.”

17:33  And thus Paul went forth from their midst.

33  Thus Paul went out from among them.

33  So Paul departed from their midst.

17:34  However, some men were joined to him and believed, among whom were also Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

34  Yet truly, certain men, adhering to him, did believe. Among these were also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

34  Some of them, however, followed him and were converted; one of them was Di-onysÆius, one of the judges of Ar-e-opÆa-gus, and a woman named DamÆa-ris, and others with them.

18:1  Now after these things, having departed from Athens, Paul came to Corinth.

1  THEN Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth;

18:2  And he found a certain Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, having recently come from Italy with Priscilla his wife (because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to depart from Rome); he came to them,

18:3  and because he was of the same trade, he remained with them and worked, for they were tentmakers by trade.

18:4  And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks.

4  And he was arguing in the synagogue on every Sabbath, introducing the name of the Lord Jesus. And he was persuading Jews and Greeks.

18:5  Now when both Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was compelled by the Spirit, solemnly bearing witness to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ.

5  And when Silas and Timothy had arrived from Macedonia, Paul stood firm in the Word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ.

18:6  But because they were opposing and blaspheming, he shook off his clothes and said to them, "Your blood [be] on your [own ]heads; I am clean. From now on I will go to the Gentiles."

6  And when they opposed themselves and blasphemed, he shook out his raiment and said unto them, Your blood [be] upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.

6  So he shook his garments and said to them, From henceforth I am not to be blamed for what I am about to do; I am going to the Gentiles.

18:7  And having gone over from there, he went into the house of a certain [man] named Justus, who worshipped God, whose house was next door to the synagogue.

7  And he departed thence, and went into the house of a certain man named Titus Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue.

7  And moving from that place, he entered into the house of a certain man, named Titus the Just, a worshiper of God, whose house was adjoined to the synagogue.

18:8  And Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in YHWH, together with all his household. And many of the Corinthians, hearing, were believing and were being baptized.

18:9  Now YHWH spoke to Paul by a vision in the night, [saying], "Do not fear, but speak, and do not keep silent;

9  And the Lord said unto Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak and hold not thy peace

9  Then the Lord said to Paul, through a vision in the night: “Do not be afraid. Instead, speak out and do not be silent.

18:10  for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you; for I have many people in this city."

10  for I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to harm thee: for I have much people in this city.

10  For I am with you. And no one will take hold of you, so as to do you harm. For many of the people in this city are with me.”

18:11  And he settled [there] a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

11  For he had already been in Corinth a year and six months and had taught the word of God among them.

18:12  Now while Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews with one purpose rose up against Paul and brought him before the judgment seat,

12  And when GalÆli-o was proconsul of AchaÆia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul; and they brought him to the judgment seat,

18:13  saying, "This [man] persuades men to worship God contrary to the law."

18:14  And when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, "If then it was some misdeed or wicked crime, O Jews, according to reason I would bear with you.

14  And as Paul was desirous to open his mouth and speak, GalÆli-o said to the Jews, If your accusations were based on something criminal, fraudulent, or vicious, I would welcome you properly, O Jews

18:15  But if it is a question about a word and names and your own law, see [to it] yourselves; for I do not wish to be a judge of these things."

15  But if they are a mere question of words and names and concerning your law, you can settle it better among yourselves; for I do not wish to be a judge of such matters.

18:16  And he drove them away from the judgment seat.

18:17  Then all the Greeks, taking hold of Sosthenes the ruler of the synagogue, were beating him before the judgment seat. And none of these things was a concern to Gallio.

17  And they all laid hold on Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment-seat. And Gallio cared for none of these things.

17  Then the pagans seized SosÆthe-nes, the priest of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And GalÆli-o disregarded these things.

18:18  Now Paul still remained there a good while, then bid farewell to the brothers, and sailed away for Syria, and Priscilla and Aquila were with him. He had his hair cut off in Cenchrea, for he had taken a vow.

18  And after Paul had remained there many days, he bade the brethen farewell and sailed for Syria, and with him Pris-cilÆla and AÆquila; having shorn his head in CenÆchre-a: because he had vowed a vow.

18:19  And he arrived in Ephesus, and he left those [two] there; but he, having entered into the synagogue, reasoned with the Jews.

19  And they came to Ephesus, and he left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews.

18:20  And when they asked him to remain with them for a longer time, he did not consent,

20  Then, although they were asking him to remain for a longer time, he would not agree.

20  When they wanted him to tarry a longer time with them, he consented not;

18:21  but bid farewell to them saying, "I must by all means keep this coming feast which is in Jerusalem; but I will return again to you, God willing."And he put out to sea from Ephesus.

21  but taking his leave of them, and saying, I will return again unto you if God will, he set sail from Ephesus.

18:22  And having gone down to Caesarea, and having gone up and greeted the church, he went down to Antioch.

22  And after going down to Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem, and he greeted the Church there, and then he descended to Antioch.

22  And he left AÆqui-la and Pris-cilÆla at EphÆe-sus and sailed and when he landed at Cµs-a-reÆa, he went up and saluted the members of the church, and went on to AnÆti-och.

18:23  After having spent some time there, he went out, going through in order the Galatian region and the Phrygian [region], strengthening all the disciples.

23  And having spent some time [there], he departed, and went through the region of Galatia, and Phrygia, in order, establishing all the disciples.

23  And after he had spent some special days there he departed and traveled all through the country of PhrygÆi-a and Ga-laÆtia, increasing disciples in all of them.

18:24  Now a certain Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, had arrived in Ephesus.

24  And a certain Jew named A-polÆlos, a native of Al-ex-anÆdri-a, an eloquent man and well versed in the scriptures, came to EphÆesus.

18:25  This man had been instructed in the way of YHWH; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things about the Lord, although he knew only the baptism of John.

25  He was learned in the Way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he was speaking and teaching the things that are of Jesus, but knowing only the baptism of John.

25  He had been converted to the way of the LORD, and was fervent in the spirit; he spoke and taught very fully concerning Jesus, but he knew only the baptism of John.

18:26  And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. And when Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

26  And so, he began to act faithfully in the synagogue. And when Priscilla and Aquila had heard him, they took him aside and expounded the Way of the Lord to him more thoroughly.

18:27  And when he desired to go across to Achaia, having urged him on, the brothers wrote to the disciples [there] to receive him; and when he arrived, he assisted greatly with those who had believed through grace;

27  And when he was minded to pass over into Achaia, the brethren encouraged him, and wrote to the disciples to receive him: and when he was come, he helped them much that had believed through grace;

27  Then, since he wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers wrote an exhortation to the disciples, so that they might accept him. And when he had arrived, he held many discussions with those who had believed.

18:28  for he was powerfully refuting the Jews publicly, demonstrating by the Scriptures [that] Jesus was the Messiah.

28  For he forcefully and publicly argued against the Jews, proving by the scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.

28  For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

19:1  And it came about, while Apollos was in Corinth, that Paul, having gone through the interior regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples

1  And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples

1  Now it happened that, while Apollo was at Corinth, Paul, after he had journeyed through the upper regions, arrived at Ephesus. And he met with certain disciples.

19:2  [he] said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit, having believed?"So they said to him, "We have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit."

2  and he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they [said] unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was [given].

2  Have you received the Holy Spirit since you were converted? They answered and said to him, We have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.

19:3  And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?"So they said, "Into John's baptism."

3  Yet truly, he said, “Then with what have you been baptized?” And they said, “With the baptism of John.”

3  Then he said to them, By what baptism then were you baptized? They said, By the baptism of John.

19:4  But Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the One coming after him, that is, in Christ Jesus."

4  Then Paul said: “John baptized the people with the baptism of repentance, saying that they should believe in the One who is to come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

19:5  And when they heard [this], they were baptized in the name of YHWH Jesus.

5  Upon hearing these things, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

19:6  And when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

19:8  And he entered into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, debating and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

8  Then, upon entering the synagogue, he was speaking faithfully for three months, disputing and persuading them about the kingdom of God.

8  Then Paul entered into the synagogue, and spoke openly for a period of three months, persuading the people concerning the kingdom of God.

19:9  But when some became hardened and disbelieving, speaking evil against the Way before the multitude, he withdrew from them and separated the disciples, each day debating in the school of a certain Tyrannus.

9  But when certain ones became hardened and would not believe, cursing the Way of the Lord in the presence of the multitude, Paul, withdrawing from them, separated the disciples, disputing daily in a certain school of Tyrannus.

9  But some of them were stubborn, and they disputed and cursed the way of God in the presence of the assembly. Then Paul withdrew, and separated the disciples from them, and he spoke to them daily in the school of a man named Ty-ranÆus.

19:10  Now this took place for two years, so that all who were dwelling in Asia heard the word of YHWH Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

10  And this continued for the space of two years; so that all they that dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

10  Now this was done throughout two years, so that all who were living in Asia listened to the Word of the Lord, both Jews and Gentiles.

19:11  And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,

11  And God was accomplishing powerful and uncommon miracles by the hand of Paul,

11  And God wrought great miracles by the hands of Paul

19:12  so that even handkerchiefs or aprons from his skin were brought to those who were sick, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out from them.

12  insomuch that unto the sick were carried away from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the evil spirits went out.

19:13  Then some of the wandering Jews, exorcists, attempted to name the name of YHWH Jesus over those having the evil spirits, saying, "We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches."

13  But certain also of the strolling Jews, exorcists, took upon them to name over them that had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

13  Now certain Jews, who went about exorcising evil spirits, invoked the name of our LORD Jesus over those who were possessed, saying, We adjure you in the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches.

19:14  Now there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish high priest, doing this.

14  And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, who did this.

14  And there were certain Jews, the seven sons of Sceva, leaders among the priests, who were acting in this way.

19:15  But the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize; but who are you?"

15  And the evil spirit answered and said unto them, Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye?

15  But a wicked spirit responded by saying to them: “Jesus I know, and Paul I know. But who are you?”

19:16  Then the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped upon them, and having subdued them, prevailed against them, so that they ran out of the house naked and wounded.

16  And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and mastered both of them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

16  Then the insane man leaped on them, and overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

19:17  Now this became known to all both Jews and Greeks who were dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all, and they were praising the name of YHWH Jesus.

17  And so, this became known to all the Jews and Gentiles who were living at Ephesus. And a fear fell over them all. And the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

17  And this became known to all the Jews and Arameans (Syrians) who dwelt at EphÆesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of our LORD Jesus Christ was magnified.

19:18  And many of those who had believed were coming, confessing and disclosing their deeds.

18  And many believers were arriving, confessing, and announcing their deeds.

18  And many of them that believed came, and told their faults, and confessed what they had done.

19:19  And many of those who were practicing magic brought together their books and burned them up before everyone. And they counted up the prices of them, and [found it to be] fifty thousand [pieces] of silver.

19  Then many of those who had followed odd sects brought together their books, and they burned them in the sight of all. And after determining the value of these, they found the price to be fifty thousand denarii.

19  Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

19:20  Thus the word of YHWH was growing powerfully and prevailed.

20  So mightily grew the word of the Lord and prevailed.

20  In this way, the Word of God was increasing strongly and was being confirmed.

19:21  When these things were fulfilled, Paul resolved in his spirit, having gone through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome."

21  Then, when these things were completed, Paul decided in the Spirit, after crossing through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “Then, after I have been there, it is necessary for me to see Rome also.”

19:22  And having sent to Macedonia two of those who were ministering to him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed on for a time in Asia.

22  So he sent to Mac-e-doÆni-a two men of those who had ministered to him, Ti-moÆtheus and E-rasÆtus; but he himself stayed in Asia Minor for some time.

19:23  Now there arose during that time a serious disturbance concerning the Way.

23  And about that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.

23  And at that time there was a great uprising against those who followed in the way of God.

19:24  For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, providing no little trade [for] the craftsmen,

24  There was here a silversmith named DemeÆtri- us, who made silver shrines for ArÆtemis, thus greatly enriching the craftsmen of his trade.

19:25  whom he gathered, with the workers of similar occupation, and said: "Men, you know out of this trade is our prosperity.

25  And calling them together, with those who were employed in the same way, he said: “Men, you know that our income is from this craft.

25  He called together all the craftsmen of his trade, with the workmen of like occupation, and said to them: Men, you know that all of our earnings are derived from this craft.

19:26  And you observe and hear that not only at Ephesus, but almost in all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great multitude, saying that they are not gods which are made by human hands.

19:27  And not only is this business of ours in danger to come into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be despised and also her magnificence, about to be destroyed, she whom all Asia and the world worship."

27  Thus, not only is this, our occupation, in danger of being brought into repudiation, but also the temple of the great Diana will be reputed as nothing! Then even her majesty, whom all of Asia and the world worships, will begin to be destroyed.”

27  So that not only is this craft doomed, but also the temple of the great goddess ArÆtemis will be disregarded, and the goddess of all Asia Minor, even she whom all peoples worship, will be despised.

19:28  And hearing [this], and becoming full of anger, they were crying out saying, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"

28  And when they heard this they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesus.

28  Upon hearing this, they were filled with anger, and they cried out, saying, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”

19:29  And the whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one purpose into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, traveling companions of Paul.

29  And the whole city was in tumult: and they rushed together to the theatre, and there seized and carried along with them GaÆius and Ar-is-tarÆchus, Mac-e-doÆni-ans, members of PaulÆs escort.

19:30  Now when Paul wished to enter in among the crowd, the disciples would not permit him.

30  And Paul wanted to go into the theatre, but the disciples stopped him.

19:31  And also some of the officials of Asia, being friends with him, sent word to him and urged him not to present himself in the theater.

31  And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.

19:32  Then others were calling out something different, for the assembly was confused, and the majority did not know for what reason they had come together.

32  Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was in confusion; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

32  Now the multitude in the theatre was greatly confused; some cried one thing, and some another; and many of them did not know why they had assembled together.

19:33  And from the crowd they brought forward Alexander, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander motioned with his hand, and desired to make a defense to the people.

33  So they dragged Alexander from the crowd, while the Jews were propelling him forward. And Alexander, gesturing with his hand for silence, wanted to give the people an explanation.

33  And the Jews who were there appointed a Jew named Al-ex-anÆder. And when he rose up, he gestured with his hand and would have addressed the people.

19:34  But recognizing he was a Jew, there arose one voice from [them ]all, calling out for two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"

34  But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

34  But as soon as they realized him to be a Jew, all with one voice, for about two hours, were crying out, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”

19:35  And having quieted the crowd, the city clerk said: "Men of Ephesus, for what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the [image ]fallen from heaven?

35  The mayor of the city finally quieted them, saying, Men of EphÆe-sus, who among men does not know that the city of the EpheÆsi- ans is the seat of great ArÆte-mis and her image that fell from heaven.

19:36  Therefore, since these things are undeniable, it is necessary for you to be quieted and to do nothing rash.

36  Seeing then that these things cannot be gainsaid, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.

36  Since, therefore, no man can contradict this, you should keep quiet, and do nothing hastily.

19:37  For you brought these men, neither temple thieves nor blasphemers of your goddess.

37  For ye have brought [hither] these men, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.

19:38  Therefore, if Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a word against anyone, the courts are in session, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another.

38  If therefore Demetrius, and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.

38  But if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a case against anyone, they can convene in the courts, and there are proconsuls. Let them accuse one another.

19:39  But if you are wanting to know anything about other [matters], it shall be determined by the lawful assembly.

39  But if you would inquire about other things, this can be decided in a lawful assembly.

19:40  For we also are in danger of being accused of insurrection concerning today, there being no cause for which we will be able to give, [as ]an explanation for this commotion.

40  For now we are in peril of being convicted of sedition over today’s events, since there is no one guilty (against whom we are able to provide evidence) in this gathering.” And when he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.

19:41  And having said these things, he dismissed the assembly.

41  And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.

20:1  Now after the disturbance had ceased, Paul, summoning the disciples and greeting them, went away to go to Macedonia.

1  And after the uproar ceased, Paul having sent for the disciples and exhorted them, took leave of them, and departed to go into Macedonia.

1  Then, after the tumult ceased, Paul, calling the disciples to himself and exhorting them, said farewell. And he set out, so that he might go into Macedonia.

20:2  And going through those parts, and encouraging them with many words, he came to Greece

2  And when he had gone through those parts, and had given them much exhortation, he came into Greece.

20:3  and spent three months [there]. And as a plot by the Jews developed against him, as he was to put to sea for Syria, a decision came about to return through Macedonia.

3  After he had spent three months there, treacheries were planned against him by the Jews, just as he was about to sail into Syria. And having been advised of this, he return through Macedonia.

3  There he remained three months. But the Jews laid a plot against him, just as he was about to sail for Syria, so he decided to return to Mac-e-doÆni-a.

20:4  And Sopater, a Berean, was accompanying him to Asia-also Aristarchus of the Thessalonians, and Secundus, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus, [the] Asians.

4  Now those accompanying him were Sopater, the son of Pyrrhus from Beroea; and also the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy; and also Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia.

4  And there accompanied him, as far as Asia Minor, SopÆa-ter of the city of Be-reÆa and Ar-is-tarÆchus and Se-cunÆdus of Thes-sa-loniÆca and GaÆius of the city of DerÆbe and Ti-moÆthe-us of LyÆstra, and from Asia Minor TychÆi-cus and TrophÆi-mus.

20:5  These [men], having gone ahead, were waiting for us in Troas.

5  These going before tarried for us at Troas.

20:6  And we sailed away after the Days of Unleavened Bread, from Philippi, and we came to them in Troas within five days, where we spent seven days.

6  Yet truly, we sailed from Philippi, after the days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days we went to them at Troas, where we stayed for seven days.

6  But we departed from the Mac-e-doÆni-an city of Phi-lipÆpi, after the days of unleavened bread, and sailed and arrived at TroÆas in five days, where we staved seven days;

20:7  Now on the first [day] of the week, the disciples being assembled to break bread, Paul was discussing with them, being about to leave on the next day, and extended his message until midnight.

7  And upon the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul discoursed with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and prolonged his speech until midnight.

20:8  And there were a considerable number of lamps in the upper room where we were assembled.

8  Now there were plenty of lamps in the upper room, where we were gathered.

8  Now there was a great glow of light from the torches in the upper chamber, where we were gathered together.

20:9  And a certain young man named Eutychus sat in the window, being overwhelmed by a deep sleep. While Paul was speaking for a while longer, having been overwhelmed by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead.

9  And a young man named EuÆty-chus was sitting at the floor opening above and listening, and as Paul prolonged his speech, the youth fell into a deep sleep, and while asleep he fell down from the third loft, and was taken up as dead.

20:10  But Paul, going down, fell upon him, and embracing him said, "Do not be troubled, for his life is in him."

10  And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Make ye no ado; for his life is in him.

10  When Paul had gone down to him, he laid himself over him and, embracing him, said, “Do not worry, for his soul is still within him.”

20:11  And going up and breaking bread and eating, and talking for a considerable time, until daybreak, thus he departed.

11  And when he was gone up, and had broken the bread, and eaten, and had talked with them a long while, even till break of day, so he departed.

11  And so, going up, and breaking bread, and eating, and having spoken well on until daylight, he then set out.

20:12  And they brought the boy living, and they were encouraged greatly.

12  Now they had brought the boy in alive, and they were more than a little consoled.

12  And they carried away the young man alive, and rejoiced over him exceedingly.

20:13  Now we, having gone ahead on the ship, put to sea for Assos, from there intending to take Paul on board; for thus it had been arranged, since he intended to go on foot.

13  But we going before to the ship set sail for Assos, there intending to take in Paul: for so had he appointed, intending himself to go by land.

13  Then we climbed aboard the ship and sailed to Assos, where we were to take in Paul. For so he himself had decided, since he was making the journey by land.

20:14  And when he met us at Assos, having taken him aboard, we came to Mitylene.

14  When we had welcomed him at AsÆsos, we took him on board and came to Mit-yleÆne.

20:15  And having sailing away from there, on the next day we arrived opposite Chios. The following day we approached to Samos and remained in Trogyllium. The following day we came to Miletus.

15  And sailing from thence, we came the following day over against Chios; and the next day we touched at Samos; and the day after we came to Miletus.

15  And we sailed thence, and came the next day over against Chios; and the next day we arrived at Samos, and tarried at Trogyllium; and the next day we came to Miletus.

20:16  For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, in order that it might not happen to him to spend time in Asia; for he was hurrying, if it was possible for him to be in Jerusalem [on] the Day of Pentecost.

16  For Paul had determined not to stop at EphÆe-sus, fearing he might be delayed there; because he was hastening, if it were possible for him, to celebrate the day of Pentecost at Jerusalem.

20:17  Now from Miletus, having sent to Ephesus, he summoned the elders of the church.

17  And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called to him the elders of the church.

17  Then, sending from Miletus to Ephesus, he called those greater by birth in the church.

20:18  And when they were present with him, he said to them: "You know from the first day which I arrived in Asia, how I was with you the whole time,

18  And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, after what manner I was with you all the time,

18  And when they had come to him and were together, he said to them: “You know that from the first day when I entered into Asia, I have been with you, for the entire time, in this manner

20:19  serving YHWH with all humility, and many tears and trials which happened to me by the plots of the Jews;

19  serving the Lord with all lowliness of mind, and with tears, and with trials which befell me by the plots of the Jews;

19  Serving God with great humility and with tears and amid the trials which were brought upon me by conspiracies of the Jews.

20:20  how I kept back nothing that was profitable, but declared it to you, teaching you publicly and from house to house,

20  And yet I did not neglect to preach to you about those things which were good for your souls, and I taught in the streets and from house to house.

20:21  solemnly bearing witness to both Jews and to Greeks, the repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus.

21  testifying both to Jews and to Greeks repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

21  Thus testifying both to the Jews and to the SyrÆi-ans, about repentance toward God and faith in our LORD Jesus Christ.

20:22  And now behold, I, having been bound in the spirit, am going to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there,

22  And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there

22  And now I am on my way to Jerusalem, bound in the spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there

20:23  except that the Holy Spirit in every city is solemnly bearing witness, saying that bonds and tribulations are waiting for me.

23  save that the Holy Spirit testifieth unto me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.

20:24  But I count myself as nothing; nor do I regard my life as valuable to myself, so that I may complete my course with joy, and the ministry which I received from YHWH Jesus, to bear solemn testimony to the gospel of the grace of God.

24  But I dread none of these things. Neither do I consider my life to be more precious because it is my own, provided that in some way I may complete my own course and that of the ministry of the Word, which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the Gospel of the grace of God.

20:25  And now behold, now I know that you all, among whom I have passed through preaching the kingdom of God, will no longer see my face.

25  And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom, shall see my face no more.

25  And now I know that you, among whom I have traveled and preached the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.

20:26  Therefore I testify to you this very day, that I am innocent of all blood.

26  Wherefore I testify unto you this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.

26  For this reason, I call you as witnesses on this very day: that I am clean from the blood of all.

20:27  For I did not draw back from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.

27  For I have not turned aside in the least from announcing every counsel of God to you.

27  For I have never shunned to declare to you, all the will of God.

20:28  Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit placed you [as ]overseers, to shepherd the church of YHWH, and of God, which He purchased with His own blood.

20:29  For I know this, that savage wolves will come in after my departure, not sparing the flock.

29  I know that after my departing grievous wolves shall enter in among you, not sparing the flock;

20:30  Also from among you yourselves will arise men speaking things having been distorted, [in order] to draw away the disciples after them.

30  and from among your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.

30  Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

20:31  Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years, night and day I did not cease, with tears, exhorting each one.

31  Wherefore watch ye, remembering that by the space of three years I ceased not to admonish every one night and day with tears.

31  Because of this, be vigilant, retaining in memory that throughout three years I did not cease, night and day, with tears, to admonish each and every one of you.

20:32  So for the present, I entrust you, brothers, to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who have been sanctified.

32  And now I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build [you] up, and to give [you] the inheritance among all them that are sanctified.

20:33  I have desired the silver or gold or clothes of no one.

33  I coveted no man`s silver, or gold, or apparel.

33  I have coveted neither silver and gold, nor apparel,

20:34  You yourselves know that these hands rendered service to my needs, and those who were with me.

34  as you yourselves know. For that which was needed by me and by those who are with me, these hands have provided.

34  Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.

20:35  By all things I have shown you, that thus laboring it is necessary to help [those] being weak, and to remember the words of YHWH Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' "

35  I have showed you all things, how that one must work hard, and be mindful of the weak, and remember the words of our LORD Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

20:36  And having said these things, he knelt down, together with them all, and prayed.

36  And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down and prayed with them all.

20:37  And there was considerable weeping by all, and falling on Paul's neck, they kissed him,

37  And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul`s neck and kissed him,

37  Then a great weeping occurred among them all. And, falling upon the neck of Paul, they kissed him,

20:38  feeling pain most of all for the words which he said, that they were about to see his face no more. And they accompanied him to the ship.

38  sorrowing most of all for the word which he had spoken, that they should behold his face no more. And they brought him on his way unto the ship.

38  But they were most distressed because of the words he spoke, that they would not see his face again. And they accompanied him to the ship.

21:1  Now when it came to pass that we had put to sea, having withdrawn from them, running a straight course we came to Cos, and on the next [day] to Rhodes, and from there to Patara.

1  And after these things had happened, having reluctantly parted from them, we sailed a direct course, arriving at Cos, and on following the day at Rhodes, and from there to Patara.

1  AND it came to pass, after we separated from them, we sailed a straight course to the Island of CoÆos, and the following day we arrived at Rhodes, and from thence to PatÆa-ra

21:2  And having found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, we boarded it and put to sea.

2  And when we had found a ship sailing across to Phoenicia, climbing aboard, we set sail.

2  And we found there a ship sailing to PheniÆcia, and we went on board, and set forth.

21:3  When we had sighted Cyprus, and had left it behind [on the ]left, we sailed to Syria, and put in to harbor in Tyre, for the ship was unloading its cargo.

3  Then, after we had caught sight of Cyprus, keeping it to the left, we sailed on to Syria, and we arrived at Tyre. For the ship was going to unload its cargo there.

21:4  And having discovered disciples, we stayed there seven days. They said to Paul through the Spirit not to go up to Jerusalem.

4  And because we found disciples there, we stayed with them seven days: and every day they said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.

21:5  But when it came about that we had completed the days [there], having gone out we departed, all [of them] accompanying us, together with [their ]wives and children, until [we were] outside the city. And having bowed [our] knees on the shore, we prayed.

5  And when it came to pass that we had accomplished the days, we departed and went on our journey; and they all, with wives and children, brought us on our way till we were out of the city: and kneeling down on the beach, we prayed, and bade each other farewell;

5  And when the days were completed, setting out, we went on; and they all accompanied us with their wives and children, until we were outside of the city. And we kneeled down at the shore and prayed.

21:6  And having greeted one another, we went up into the ship, and they returned to their own [homes].

6  and we went on board the ship, but they returned home again.

6  And when we had said farewell to one another, we climbed aboard the ship. And they returned to their own.

21:7  And completing our voyage from Tyre, we arrived in Ptolemais, and having greeted the brothers, we stayed one day with them.

7  We sailed from Tyre and arrived at the city of Ak-ka (Ptol-e-maÆis), and we saluted the brethren who were there, and tarried with them a day.

21:8  On the next day those accompanying Paul went forth and came to Caesarea, and entering into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, we stayed with him.

21:9  Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.

9  He had four daughters, virgins, who prophesied.

9  And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy.

21:10  And while we remained there several days, a certain prophet from Judea named Agabus came down.

10  And as we were there many days, there came down from Judµa a prophet named AgÆa-bus.

21:11  And coming to us and taking Paul's belt, and binding his feet and hands, he said, "Thus says the Holy Spirit, ' The man whose belt this is, the Jews will bind in this way in Jerusalem, and they will deliver [him] into the hands of the Gentiles.' "

11  And he, when he had come to us, took Paul’s belt, and binding his own feet and hands, he said: “Thus says the Holy Spirit: The man whose belt this is, the Jews will bind in this way at Jerusalem. And they will deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.”

11  And when he was come unto us, he took PaulÆs girdle, and bound his own feet and hands, and said, Thus says the Holy Spirit, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owns this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

21:12  Now when we heard these things, both we and the local residents urged him not to go up to Jerusalem.

12  And when we had heard this, both we and those who were from that place begged him not to go up to Jerusalem.

21:13  Then Paul answered, "Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem, for the name of YHWH Jesus."

13  Then Paul responded by saying: “What do you accomplish by weeping and afflicting my heart? For I am prepared, not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem, for the name of the Lord Jesus.”

21:14  And when he remained unpersuaded, we were silent and said, "Let the will of YHWH be done."

14  And since we were not able to persuade him, we quieted, saying: “May the will of the Lord be done.”

14  And when he would not listen to us, we ceased, saying, Let the will of our LORD be done.

21:15  Now after those days, having prepared, we went up to Jerusalem.

15  Then, after those days, having made preparations, we ascended to Jerusalem.

15  After those days, we made our preparations and went up to Jerusalem.

21:16  Also some of the disciples from Caesarea went with us and brought with them a certain Cypriot named Mnason, a long-standing disciple, with whom we would stay as a guest.

16  And there came with us some of the disciples from Cµs-a-reÆa, bringing with them a brother who was among the first converts, named MnaÆson, a native of Cyprus, who had before received us at his house.

21:17  And when we arrived in Jerusalem, the brothers gladly received us.

17  When we arrived at Jerusalem, the brethren welcomed us gladly.

21:18  On the next day Paul was going in with us to James, and all the elders were present.

18  Then, on the following day, Paul entered with us to James. And all the elders were assembled.

18  And the next day when all the elders were present we went in with Paul unto James.

21:19  And having greeted them, he reported one by one those[ ]things which God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry.

19  And when he had greeted them, he explained each thing that God had accomplished among the Gentiles through his ministry.

19  And when we had saluted them, Paul told them in successive order everything that God had done among the Gentiles by his ministry.

21:20  And hearing this, they were glorifying YHWH, saying to him, "You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are who have believed, and they are all zealous for the law;

20  And they, when they heard it, glorified God; and they said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of them that have believed; and they are all zealous for the law

21:21  and they have been informed about you, that you are teaching defection from Moses, to all the Jews who are among the Gentiles, saying for them not to circumcise their children nor to walk in our customs.

21:22  What then? It is necessary for an assembly to come together; for they will hear that you have come.

22  Now, therefore, they have heard that you have come here.

21:23  Therefore do this, which we say to you: There[ ]are four men with us who have taken a vow upon themselves.

23  Do therefore this that we say to thee: We have four men that have a vow on them;

23  Do, therefore, what we tell you: We have four men who have vowed to purify themselves;

21:24  Take them and purify yourself with them, and pay for them that they may have their head shaved, and that all may know that those things of which they have been informed about you are nothing, but [that] you are agreeing with and keeping the law yourself.

24  these take, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges for them, that they may shave their heads: and all shall know that there is no truth in the things whereof they have been informed concerning thee; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, keeping the law.

24  Take these and sanctify yourself with them, and require them to shave their heads. And then everyone will know that the things that they have heard about you are false, but that you yourself walk in keeping with the law.

21:25  But as for the Gentile believers, we wrote, having judged that they should keep no such thing, except that they should keep themselves from things offered to idols, from blood, and [from anything] strangled, and from fornication."

25  As for the believers amongst the Gentiles, we have written that they should abstain from the things sacrificed to idols, and from fornication, and from what is strangled, and from blood.

21:26  Then Paul, having taken the men, on the next day having been purified with them, entered into the temple, [thus] giving notice to the completion of the days of the purification, until [the time] when the offering was offered in behalf of each one of them.

26  Then Paul took the men, and the next day purifying himself with them went into the temple, declaring the fulfilment of the days of purification, until the offering was offered for every one of them.

26  Then Paul, taking the men on the next day, was purified with them, and he entered the temple, announcing the process of the days of purification, until an oblation would be offered on behalf of each one of them.

21:27  Now when the seven days were about to be completed, the Jews from Asia, seeing him in the temple, were stirring up all the crowd and put their hands on him,

27  But when the seven days were reaching completion, those Jews who were from Asia, when they had seen him in the temple, incited all the people, and they laid hands on him, crying out

27  And when the seventh day approached, and the Jews from Asia Minor saw him in the temple, they stirred up all the people against him and laid hands on him,

21:28  crying out, "Men of Israel, help us! This is the man who is teaching all [people] everywhere against the people and the Law and this place; and furthermore he has brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place."

28  “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who is teaching, everyone, everywhere, against the people and the law and this place. Furthermore, he has even brought Gentiles into the temple, and he has violated this holy place.”

28  And cried out, saying, Men of Israel, help: This is the man who teaches everywhere against our people, against the law, and against this place; and further, he has brought Syr-i-ans into the temple, and has defiled this holy place.

21:29  For they had seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.

21:30  And all the city was aroused; and there was a mob forming among the people, and taking hold of Paul they were dragging him outside the temple; and immediately the doors were shut.

30  And the entire city was stirred up. And it happened that the people ran together. And apprehending Paul, they dragged him outside of the temple. And immediately the doors were closed.

21:31  And seeking to kill him, a report went up to the commander of the garrison that all Jerusalem had been stirred up,

31  And as they were seeking to kill him, tidings came up to the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in confusion.

31  Then, as they were seeking to kill him, it was reported to the tribune of the cohort: “All Jerusalem is in confusion.”

21:32  who immediately having taken along soldiers and centurions, ran down among them. And when they saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.

32  And so, immediately taking soldiers and centurions, he rushed down to them. And when they had seen the tribune and the soldiers, they ceased to strike Paul.

21:33  And the commander, approaching, took hold of him, and ordered him to be bound with two chains; and he was inquiring who he might be and what he had done.

33  Then the chief captain came near, and laid hold on him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and inquired who he was, and what he had done.

33  Then the tribune, drawing near, apprehended him and ordered that he be bound with two chains. And he was asking who he was and what he had done.

21:34  But others among the crowd were crying out one thing and some another; and because he was unable to ascertain the truth because of the noise, he commanded him to be brought into the barracks.

34  And some shouted one thing, some another, among the crowd: and when he could not know the certainty for the uproar, he commanded him to be brought into the castle.

34  Then they were crying out various things within the crowd. And since he could not understand anything clearly because of the noise, he ordered him to be brought into the fortress.

21:35  But when he arrived at the stairs, he had to be carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the crowd.

35  And when he came upon the stairs, so it was that he was borne of the soldiers for the violence of the crowd;

35  And when he had arrived at the stairs, it happened that he was carried up by the soldiers, because of the threat of violence from the people.

21:36  For the multitude of the people was following, calling out, "take him away!"

36  For a great many people followed after, crying, and saying, Away with him.

21:37  Then as Paul was about to be led into the barracks, he said to the commander, "Is it permitted from me to speak to you?"And he said, "Do you know Greek?

37  And as Paul was about to be brought into the castle, he saith unto the chief captain, May I say something unto thee? And he said, Dost thou know Greek?

37  And as Paul was beginning to be brought into the fortress, he said to the tribune, “Is it permissible for me to say something to you?” And he said, “You know Greek?

21:38  Are you not then the Egyptian who rose up before these days, and led forth the four thousand men of the assassins into the wilderness?"

21:39  But Paul said, "I am a Jew from Tarsus of Cilicia, a citizen of no obscure city; and I request of you, permit me to speak to the people."

39  But Paul said to him: “I am a man, indeed a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of a well-known city. So I petition you, permit me to speak to the people.”

39  But Paul said, I am a man which am a Jew of Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city: and, I beseech thee, suffer me to speak unto the people.

21:40  And permitting him, Paul stood on the stairs and motioned with his hand to the people. And when there was a great silence, he addressed them in the Hebrew language, saying,

40  And when he had given him leave, Paul, standing on the stairs, beckoned with the hand unto the people; and when there was made a great silence, he spake unto them in the Hebrew language, saying,

22:1  "Men, brothers and fathers, hear my defense to you now."

1  Brethren and fathers, hear ye the defence which I now make unto you.

1  “Noble brothers and fathers, listen to the explanation that I now give to you.”

22:2  And hearing that he was addressing them in the Hebrew language, they granted [him ]more silence. And he said

2  And when they heard that he spake unto them in the Hebrew language, they were the more quiet: and he saith,

22:3  "I am indeed a Jew, having been born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but having been brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, having been educated according to the exactness of the law of our forefathers, being zealous for God just as you all are today.

3  And he said: “I am a Jewish man, born at Tarsus in Cilicia, but raised in this city beside the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the truth of the law of the fathers, zealous for the law, just as all of you also are to this day.

3  I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Ci-liÆcia, yet I was brought up in this city under the care and guidance of Ga-maÆli-el, and trained perfectly according to the law of our fathers, and was zealous toward God, just as you are also.

22:4  I, who persecuted this Way to death, binding and handing over to prisons both men and women,

4  and I persecuted this Way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

4  I persecuted this Way, even unto death, binding and delivering into custody both men and women,

22:5  as also the high priest testifies of me, along with the council of the elders, from whom I also received letters to the brothers, and went to Damascus in order to bring those who were there, having been bound, to Jerusalem, that they might be punished.

5  just as the high priest and all those greater by birth bear witness to me. Having received letters from them to the brothers, I journeyed to Damascus, so that I might lead them bound from there to Jerusalem, so that they might be punished.

5  The high priest and all the elders can so testify about me, for it was from them that I received letters to go to the brethren at Damascus, to bring those who were there bound to Jerusalem to be punished.

22:6  Now it happened, as I was going and approaching Damascus, about midday, suddenly from heaven a great light shone about me.

6  And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and drew nigh unto Damascus, about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.

6  But it happened that, as I was traveling and was approaching Damascus at midday, suddenly from heaven a great light shone around me.

22:7  And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?'

22:8  "So I answered, 'Who are You, Lord?' And He said to me, 'I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting.'

8  And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

22:9  "And those who were with me observed the light and became terrified, but they did not hear the voice of the [One] speaking to me.

9  And they that were with me beheld indeed the light, but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

22:10  So I said, 'What shall I do, Lord?' And YHWH said to me, 'Arise and go into Damascus, and it will be told to you about all the[ ]things which it has been appointed for you to do.'

10  And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

10  And I said, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ Then the Lord said to me: ‘Rise up, and go to Damascus. And there, you shall be told all that you must do.’

22:11  "And since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, being led by the hand by those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

11  And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me I came into Damascus.

22:12  And Ananias, a certain devout man according to the law, being testified of by all the Jews dwelling in Damascus,

12  And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews that dwelt there,

12  Then a certain Ananias, a man in accord with the law, having the testimony of all the Jews who were living there,

22:13  came to me and he stood and said to me, 'Brother Saul, see again.' And I, in that very hour, looked up at him.

22:14  And he said, 'The God of our fathers has chosen you to know His will, and to see the Righteous One, and hear the voice from His mouth.

14  But he said: ‘The God of our fathers has preordained you, so that you would come to know his will and would see the Just One, and would hear the voice from his mouth.

22:15  For you shall be a witness for Him to all men of what you have seen and heard.

15  And you shall be a witness for him before all men, of all that you have seen and heard.

15  For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

22:16  And now, what are you going to do? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of YHWH.'

16  And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on his name.

16  And now, why do you delay? Rise up, and be baptized, and wash away your sins, by invoking his name.’

22:17  "And it happened to me, having returned to Jerusalem and praying in the temple, that I came to be in a trance,

17  And it came to pass, that, when I had returned to Jerusalem, and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance,

17  Then it happened that, when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, a mental stupor came over me,

22:18  and saw Him saying to me, 'Hurry and go out quickly from Jerusalem, for they will not receive your witness about Me.'

18  and I saw him saying to me: ‘Hurry! Depart quickly from Jerusalem! For they will not accept your testimony about me.’

18  I saw a vision, saying to me, Make haste, and get quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive your testimony concerning me.

22:19  "And I said, 'Lord, they know that in every synagogue I was imprisoning and beating those believing on You.

19  And I said, Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee

22:20  And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was shed, I myself was standing by consenting to his murder, and guarding the clothes of those murdering him.'

22:21  "Then He said to me, 'Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.' "

21  And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee forth far hence unto the Gentiles.

21  And he said to me, ‘Go forth. For I am sending you to far away nations.’ ”

22:22  Now they were listening to him until this statement, and they lifted their voice saying, "Take away such a [man] from the earth, for it is not fitting [for] him to live!"

22  And they gave him audience unto this word; and they lifted up their voice, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

22:23  And as they were crying out and throwing off their clothes, and throwing dust in the air,

23  And while they were shouting, and tossing aside their garments, and casting dust into the air,

22:24  the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and said for him that he should be given a hearing with scourging, so that he might learn why they were crying thus against him.

24  the chief captain commanded him be brought into the castle, bidding that he should be examined by scourging, that he might know for what cause they so shouted against him.

24  the tribune ordered him to be brought into the fortress, and to be scourged and tortured, in order to discover the reason that they were crying out in this way against him.

22:25  But as they were stretching him out with the thongs, Paul said to the centurion standing there, "Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?"

25  And when they had tied him up with the thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

22:26  And the centurion, hearing this, going to the commander he reported, saying, "Watch what you are about to do, for this man is a Roman."

22:27  Then the commander came and said to him, "Tell me, are you a Roman?"He said, "Yes."

27  And the chief captain came and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? And he said, Yea.

27  And the tribune, approaching, said to him: “Tell me. Are you a Roman?” So he said, “Yes.”

22:28  And the commander answered, "I acquired this citizenship with much money."And Paul said, "But I was born [a citizen]."

28  And the tribune responded, “I obtained this citizenship at great cost.” And Paul said, “But I was born to it.”

28  And the captain answered and said, I obtained Roman citizenship with a great sum of money. Paul answered, But I was free born to it.

22:29  Then immediately those who were about to interrogate him withdrew from him; and even the commander was afraid, having learned he was a Roman, and that he had bound him.

29  They then that were about to examine him straightway departed from him: and the chief captain also was afraid when he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

29  Therefore, those who were going to torture him, immediately withdrew from him. The tribune was similarly afraid, after he realized that he was a Roman citizen, for he had bound him.

22:30  Now on the next day, desiring to know the truth [as to] why he was accused by the Jews, he released him from the bonds, and ordered the chief priests and their whole council to come, and brought Paul down and presented [him] to them.

23:1  Then Paul, looking intently at the council, said, "Men, brothers, I have lived with all good conscience toward God until this day."

1  AND as Paul beheld their assembly, he said, Men, my brethren, I have lived i n all good conscience before God until this day.

23:2  But the high priest Ananias commanded those standing by him to strike his mouth.

2  And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

23:3  Then Paul said to him, "God is about to strike you, you whitewashed wall! For you sit judging me according to the law, and contrary to the law do you command that I should be struck?"

3  Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: and sittest thou to judge me according to the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?

23:4  But those standing by said, "Do you revile the high priest of God?"

4  And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God`s high priest?

4  And those who were standing nearby said, “Are you speaking evil about the high priest of God?”

23:5  Then Paul said, "I did not know, brothers, that he is the high priest; for it is written, 'You shall not speak wickedly of a ruler of your people.' "

5  And Paul said, I knew not, brethren, that he was high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of a ruler of thy people.

23:6  But when Paul perceived that one part was of the Sadducees and the other of the Pharisees, he cried out in the Sanhedrin, "Men, brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of a Pharisee; concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!"

6  Now Paul, knowing that one group were Sadducees and the other were Pharisees, exclaimed in the council: “Noble brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees! It is over the hope and resurrection of the dead that I am being judged.”

6  Now when Paul perceived that part of the people were SadÆdu-cees, and the others were PharÆi-sees, he cried out in the assembly, Men, my brethren, I am a PharÆi-see, the son of a PharÆi-see: and it is because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead that I am here to be judged.

23:7  And when he had spoken this, there came to be a dispute between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.

23:8  For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection-nor angel nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess both.

23:9  And there came to be a great outcry, and the scribes of the Pharisees' party stood up and contended sharply, saying, "We find no evil in this man; but if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him, let us not fight against God."

9  Then there occurred a great clamor. And some of the Pharisees, rising up, were fighting, saying: “We find nothing evil in this man. What if a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel?”

23:10  And when much dissension developed, the commander, fearing lest Paul might be torn apart by them, commanded the detachment of soldiers to go down and seize him from the midst of them, and to bring [him] into the barracks.

23:11  Now on the next night YHWH stood by him and said, "Take courage, Paul; for as you solemnly testified about the things concerning Me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome."

11  During the night, our LORD appeared to Paul and said, Be strong, for as you have testified concerning me at Jerusalem, so also you are to testify at Rome.

23:12  Now when it was day, some of the Jews joined in a conspiracy and bound themselves by a curse, saying neither would they eat nor drink until they would kill Paul.

12  And when it was day, the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

12  And when daylight arrived, some of the Jews gathered together and bound themselves with an oath, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.

23:13  And there were over four hundred who had made this plot;

13  And they were more than forty that made this conspiracy.

13  Now there were more than forty men who had taken this oath together.

23:14  who came to the chief priests and to the elders and said, "We have bound ourselves by oath with a curse to taste nothing until we kill Paul.

14  And they approached the leaders of the priests, and the elders, and they said: “We have sworn ourselves by an oath, so that we will taste nothing, until we have killed Paul.

23:15  Now you, therefore, together with the council, suggest to the commander that he be brought down to you tomorrow, as though you are going to determine more accurately the things concerning him; but we, before he comes near, are prepared to kill him."

15  Now therefore do ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you, as though ye would judge of his case more exactly: and we, before he comes near, are ready to slay him.

15  Now you and the leaders of the council ask the captain to bring him to you, as though you were desirous to have a thorough investigation of his acts, and we are ready to kill him before he shall arrive here.

23:16  But when Paul's sister's son heard about the ambush, he came and entered into the barracks, and told [this] to Paul.

16  But Paul`s sister`s son heard of their lying in wait, and he came and entered into the castle and told Paul.

16  When PaulÆs nephew heard this plot, he went into the castle and told Paul.

23:17  And Paul, summoning one of the centurions and said, "Lead this young man away to the commander, for he has something to tell him."

17  Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.

23:18  Therefore taking him along, he brought him to the commander and said, "The prisoner Paul, having summoned me, asked me to bring this young man to you, for he has something to say to you."

18  And indeed, he took him and led him to the tribune, and he said, “Paul, the prisoner, asked me to lead this young man to you, since he has something to say to you.”

23:19  And the commander, taking him by his hand, withdrew to a private place and inquired, "What is it that you have to tell me?"

19  Then the tribune, taking him by the hand, withdrew with him by themselves, and he asked him: “What is it that you have to tell me?”

23:20  And he said, "The Jews have agreed to ask that tomorrow you bring Paul down to the Sanhedrin, as though they are going to learn something more accurate concerning him.

20  Then he said: “The Jews have met to ask you to bring Paul tomorrow to the council, as if they intended to question him about something else.

20  And the young man said to him, The Jews have decided to ask you to bring Paul down tomorrow to their council, as though they were desirous to learn something more from him.

23:21  Therefore you [must] not be persuaded by them; for more than four hundred of them are lying in wait for him, who have bound themselves by a curse neither to eat nor to drink until they kill him; and now they are prepared, waiting for the promise from you."

21  But truly, you should not believe them, for they would ambush him with more than forty men from among them, who have bound themselves by an oath neither to eat, nor to drink, until they have put him to death. And they are now prepared, hoping for an affirmation from you.”

23:22  Then the commander dismissed the young man, and commanded him, "Tell no one that you have made known these things to me."

22  So the chief captain let the young man go, charging him, Tell no man that thou hast signified these things to me.

22  And then the tribune dismissed the young man, instructing him not to tell anyone that he had made known these things to him.

23:23  And having summoned two of the centurions he said, "Make ready two hundred soldiers, and seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen, in order that they may go to Caesarea, to leave at the third hour of the night;

23  And he called to him two centurions, and said, Go and make ready two hundred Roman soldiers to go to Cµs-a-reÆa and seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen, to leave at nine oÆclock tonight.

23:24  and place mounts at [their] disposal, in order that they may put Paul on them, and bring him safely to Felix the governor."

24  and [he bade them] provide beasts, that they might set Paul thereon, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.

24  And prepare beasts of burden to carry Paul, so that they may lead him safely to Felix, the governor.”

23:25  And he wrote a letter which contained this content

25  For he was afraid, lest perhaps the Jews might seize him and kill him, and that afterwards he would be falsely accused, as if he had accepted a bribe. And so he wrote a letter containing the following

23:26  Claudius Lysias, to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.

23:27  This man, having been arrested by the Jews, was about to be killed by them. I came upon [them] with the detachment of soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he is a Roman.

27  This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be slain of them, when I came upon them with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.

23:28  And desiring to know the cause for which they were accusing him, I took him down to their council;

28  And wanting to know the reason that they objected to him, I brought him into their council.

23:29  and I found that he was accused concerning questions of their law, [but] had no accusation [against him] worthy of death or chains.

29  whom I found to be accused about questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.

29  And I discovered him to be accused about questions of their law. Yet truly, nothing deserving of death or imprisonment was within the accusation.

23:30  And when it became known to me that a plot against the man by the Jews was about to happen, I sent him at once to you, and also commanded the accusers to state the charges against him before you. Farewell.

30  And when it was shown to me that there would be a plot against the man, I sent him to thee forthwith, charging his accusers also to speak against him before thee.

30  And when I had been given news of ambushes, which they had prepared against him, I sent him to you, notifying his accusers also, so that they may plead their accusations before you. Farewell.”

23:31  Then the soldiers, as they were commanded, took Paul and brought him during the night to Antipatris.

31  Therefore the soldiers, taking Paul according to their orders, brought him by night to Antipatris.

23:32  And on the next day they left the horsemen to go on with him, and returned to the barracks.

32  And the next day, sending the horsemen to go with him, they returned to the fortress.

32  On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle

23:33  When they entered into Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, [they] also presented Paul to him.

33  and they, when they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, presented Paul also before him.

23:34  And when the governor read the letter, he asked what province he was from. And learning that he was from Cilicia,

34  And when he had read it, he asked of what province he was; and when he understood that he was of Cilicia,

23:35  he said, "I will give you a hearing when your accusers arrive."And he commanded him to be guarded in Herod's Praetorium.

35  I will hear thee fully, said he, when thine accusers also are come: and he commanded him to be kept in Herod`s palace.

35  “I will hear you, when your accusers have arrived.” And he ordered him to be kept in the praetorium of Herod.

24:1  Now after five days Ananias the high priest came down with the elders and a certain attorney named Tertullus, who made known to the governor the charges against Paul.

1  Then, after five days, the high priest Ananias came down with some of the elders and a certain Tertullus, a speaker. And they went to the governor against Paul.

1  And after five days Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul.

24:2  And when he had been called, Tertullus began to accuse [him], saying: "Attaining much peace by you and successes coming about for this nation by your foresight,

2  And when he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy much peace, and that by the providence evils are corrected for this nation,

24:3  both in everything and everywhere we accept [it], most excellent Felix, with all thanksgiving.

3  And we all, everywhere, receive your favors, O most excellent FeÆlix.

3  We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.

24:4  But that I not weary you any longer, I beseech you to hear us briefly in your graciousness.

4  But, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I entreat thee to hear us of thy clemency a few words.

24:5  For [we] have found this man [to ]be a plague, and [one] causing discord among all the Jews throughout the world, and a leader of the Nazarenes sect,

5  For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes

5  We have found this man to be pestilent, to be inciting seditions among all the Jews in the entire world, and to be the author of the sedition of the sect of the Nazarenes.

24:6  who also attempted to profane the temple, whom we also arrested,

6  who moreover assayed to profane the temple: on whom also we laid hold: [and we would have judged him according to our law.]

6  And he has even been attempting to violate the temple. And having apprehended him, we wanted him to be judged according to our law.

24:7  - - -

7  [But the chief captain Lysias came, and with great violence took him away out of our hands,]

7  But Lysias, the tribune, overwhelming us with great violence, snatched him away from our hands,

24:8  from whom you will be able, having judged [him] yourself, to learn about all these things of which we are accusing him."

8  [commanding his accusers to come before thee.] from whom thou wilt be able, by examining him thyself, to take knowledge of all these things whereof we accuse him.

8  Then he commanded his accusers to come to you. Now when you question him, you can learn for yourself concerning all these things of which we accuse him.

24:9  And the Jews also joined in the attack, asserting that these things were so.

9  The Jews also witnessed against him, declaring that these things were true.

24:10  But Paul answered (the governor, having nodded for him to speak): "Knowing that you have been a judge of this nation for many years, the more cheerfully I defend the things concerning myself,

24:11  because you being able to know that it has not been more than twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem.

11  For, as you may realize, it has only been twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem.

11  So that you may understand, that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem to worship.

24:12  And they did not find me with anyone in the temple disputing, or inciting a crowd to rise up, neither in the synagogues nor in the city.

12  And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, nor have I had an assembly either in their synagogues or in the city

24:13  Nor are they able to prove [against ]me the things about which they are now accusing me.

13  Neither can they prove to thee the things whereof they now accuse me.

13  Nor can they prove before you the things of which they accuse me.

24:14  But I confess this to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect, so I worship the God of my fathers, believing in all things which are written throughout the Law and in the Prophets,

14  But this I confess, that in that very teaching which they mention, I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets

24:15  having hope in God, which even they themselves are waiting for, that there is going to be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust.

15  And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.

24:16  And in this I myself am engaging, having a conscience blameless toward God and men through everything.

16  Herein I also exercise myself to have a conscience void of offence toward God and men always.

16  For this reason, I labor to have always a clear conscience before God and before men.

24:17  And after many years I arrived to bring alms and offerings to my nation,

17  Then, after many years, I went to my nation, bringing alms and offerings and vows,

17  Now after many years, I came to my own people to distribute alms and to present an offering.

24:18  among whom some Jews from Asia found me, having been purified in the temple, not with a crowd nor with turmoil,

18  amidst which they found me purified in the temple, with no crowd, nor yet with tumult: but [there were] certain Jews from Asia--

18  through which I obtained purification in the temple: neither with a crowd, nor with a commotion.

24:19  who ought to be present before you and to make accusation if anything they might have against me.

19  But certain Jews out of Asia are the ones who should have appeared before you to accuse me, if they have anything against me.

19  Who ought to have been here before thee, and object, if they had ought against me.

24:20  Or let these themselves say what wrong they found in me, when I stood before the council,

20  Or else let these same people here say, what fault they found in me when I stood before their council.

24:21  unless it is because of this one statement which I cried out, standing among them, 'Concerning the resurrection of the dead I am being judged by you today.' "

21  except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question before you this day.

21  For while standing among them, I spoke out solely about this one matter: about the resurrection of the dead. It is about this that I am being judged today by you.”

24:22  And when he heard these things, Felix adjourned them, knowing more accurately the things[ ]concerning the Way, and said, "When Lysias the commander comes down, I will decide your case."

22  Then Felix, after having ascertained much knowledge about this Way, kept them waiting, by saying, “When Lysias the tribune has arrived, I will give you a hearing.”

24:23  And ordering the centurion to keep watch over Paul and to let him have some liberty, and not to forbid [any] of his own to serve or to come to him.

23  And he gave order to the centurion that he should be kept in charge, and should have indulgence; and not to forbid any of his friends to minister unto him.

23  And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul in comfort, and that none of his acquaintances should be prevented from ministering to him.

24:24  Now after some days, when Felix arrived with Drusilla his wife, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.

24  Then, after some days, Felix, arriving with his wife Drusilla who was a Jew, called for Paul and listened to him about the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

24:25  And as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment which is going to be, Felix became afraid and answered, "Go away for now; but when I have opportunity I will summon you."

25  And after he discoursed about justice and chastity, and about the future judgment, Felix was trembling, and he responded: “For now, go, but remain under guard. Then, at an opportune time, I will summon you.”

24:26  Meanwhile he also hoped that money would be given him by Paul, that he might release him. Therefore sending for him more often, he was conversing with him.

26  Since he was expecting a bribe from Paul, he often sent for him to be brought and conversed with him.

24:27  But after two years had passed, Felix received Porcius Festus as his successor; and Felix, desiring to grant favors to the Jews, left Paul in prison.

27  And when he had completed two years, another governor succeeded him whose name was PorÆci-us FesÆtus: and FeÆlix, to do the Jews a favor, left Paul a prisoner.

25:1  Now when Festus had set foot in the province, after three days he went up to Jerusalem from Ceasarea.

1  And so, when Festus had arrived in the province, after three days, he ascended to Jerusalem from Caesarea.

1  NOW when FesÆtus arrived at Cµsa- reÆa, after three days he went up to Jerusalem.

25:2  And the high priest and the prominent men of the Jews made known to him the case against Paul; and they were appealing to him,

2  Then the high priests and Jewish leaders informed him against Paul.

25:3  asking for favor against him, that he would summon him to Jerusalem-while planning an ambush to kill him along the way.

3  They besought him as a favor to send for him and bring him to Jerusalem, for they were plotting to kill him on the way.

3  And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.

25:4  But Festus answered that Paul should be kept at Caesarea, and that he was about to go there shortly.

4  Howbeit Festus answered, that Paul was kept in charge at Caesarea, and that he himself was about to depart [thither] shortly.

25:5  "Therefore,"he said, "the prominent men among you, let them go with me and accuse this man, if there is anything in this man."

5  Therefore, said he, let those who are able among you come down with us and accuse the man about any offense which can be found against him.

25:6  And when he had stayed among them more than ten days, he went down to Caesarea. And the next day, sitting on the judgment seat, he commanded Paul to be brought.

6  Then, having stayed among them no more than eight or ten days, he descended to Caesarea. And on the next day, he sat in the judgment seat, and he ordered Paul to be led in.

25:7  When he arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many and serious accusations against Paul, which they were not able to prove,

7  And when he was come, the Jews that had come down from Jerusalem stood round about him, bringing against him many and grievous charges which they could not prove;

7  And when he had been brought, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, throwing out many serious accusations, none of which they were able to prove.

25:8  while he defended himself, [saying,] "Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar did I commit any sin."

8  Paul offered this defense: “Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar, have I offended in any matter.”

8  Then Paul answered, I have committed no offense against the Jewish law, or against the temple, or against Cµsar.

25:9  But Festus, desiring to grant a favor to the Jews, answered Paul and said, "Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem and there be judged before me concerning these things?"

9  But Festus, because he was willing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul, Would you be willing to go to Jerusalem and there be tried of these things before me?

25:10  But Paul said, "I am standing before the judicial bench of Caesar, by whom it is necessary [for] me to be judged. I have done no wrong to the Jews, as also you know very well.

10  But Paul said: “I stand in Caesar’s tribunal, which is where I ought to be judged. I have done no harm to the Jews, as you well know.

10  Paul answered and said, I stand before CµsarÆs judgment seat, where I ought to be tried: I have done no wrong to the Jews, as you very well know.

25:11  For if I am doing wrong, and have done anything worthy of death, I am not trying to escape a death sentence; but if there is nothing in these things of which these [people] are accusing me, no one is able to deliver me to them. I appeal to Caesar."

11  If then I am a wrong-doer, and have committed anything worthy of death, I refuse not to die; but if none of those things is [true] whereof these accuse me, no man can give me up unto them. I appeal unto Caesar.

11  If I had committed any crime or had done anything worthy of death, I should not refuse to die: but if there is no truth in the charges made against me, then no man may deliver me to them just to please them. I appeal to Cµsar.

25:12  Then Festus, having talked together with the council, answered, "Have you appealed to Caesar? Before Caesar you shall go!"

12  Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Thou hast appealed unto Caesar: unto Caesar shalt thou go.

12  Festus, when he had conferred with his counsellors, decreed, You have appealed to Cµsar. You will go to Cµsar.

25:13  And after some days King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea and greeted Festus.

13  Some days later, King A-gripÆpa and Ber-niÆce came down to Cµs-a-reÆa to greet Festus.

25:14  And as he was spending many days there, Festus laid before the king the charges against Paul, saying: "There is a certain man who was left a prisoner by Felix,

25:15  about whom the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, when I was in Jerusalem, asking for punishment against him.

15  When I was at Jerusalem, the leaders of the priests and the elders of the Jews came to me about him, asking for condemnation against him.

15  And when I was in Jerusalem, the high priests and the elders of the Jews informed me about him, and asked to have judgment against him.

25:16  To them I answered, 'It is not a custom with Romans to deliver any man to destruction before the [one] being accused may meet his accusers face to face, and may receive an opportunity for defense concerning the charge.'

16  I answered them that it is not the custom of the Romans to condemn any man, before he who is being accused has been confronted by his accusers and has received the opportunity to defend himself, so as to clear himself of the charges.

16  I told them, It is not the Roman custom to give up a man to be slain, until his accusers come and accuse him face to face, and give him a chance to defend himself against the charges.

25:17  "Therefore when they had assembled here, having made no delay, on the next day I took my seat at the judicial bench, and I commanded the man to be brought [in];

17  When therefore they were come together here, I made no delay, but on the next day sat on the judgment-seat, and commanded the man to be brought.

17  Therefore, when they had arrived here, without any delay, on the following day, sitting in the judgment seat, I ordered the man to be brought.

25:18  concerning whom, when the accusers stood, they brought no accusation of the[ ]things which I was supposing,

18  But when the accusers had stood up, they did not present any accusation about him from which I would suspect evil.

25:19  but had some questions against him about their own religion and about a certain Jesus, who had died, whom Paul affirmed to be living.

19  Instead, they brought against him certain disputes about their own superstition and about a certain Jesus, who had died, but whom Paul asserted to be alive.

19  But they had certain grievances against him relative to their own worship and to one named Jesus, now dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.

25:20  And being uncertain [as to] the investigation concerning this, I asked whether he was willing to go to Jerusalem and there be judged concerning these charges.

20  Therefore, being in doubt about this kind of question, I asked him if he was willing go to Jerusalem and to be judged there about these things.

25:21  But when Paul appealed that he be kept for the decision of His Majesty the Emperor, I commanded him to be kept until I may send him to Caesar."

21  But since Paul was appealing to be kept for a decision before Augustus, I ordered him to be kept, until I might send him to Caesar.”

21  But he appealed to be kept as a prisoner for a trial before CµÆsar. I accordingly commanded him to be kept in custody till I might send him to CµÆsar.

25:22  Then Agrippa said to Festus, "I also was wishing to hear the man myself.""Tomorrow,"he said, "you shall hear him."

22  And Agrippa [said] unto Festus, I also could wish to hear the man myself. To-morrow, saith he, thou shalt hear him.

25:23  Therefore on the next day, when Agrippa and Bernice had come with all pomp, and had entered into the auditorium together with the commanders and the prominent men of the city, and when Festus had commanded, Paul was brought.

23  The next day A-gripÆpa and Ber-niÆce came with great pomp, and entered into the court house, accompanied by the chief captains and principal men of the city. Festus commanded and Paul was brought in.

23  And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus' commandment Paul was brought forth.

25:24  And Festus said: "King Agrippa and all the men who are with us, observe this man about whom the people of the Jews petitioned me, both in Jerusalem and here, crying against [him] that it is not fitting [for] him to live any longer.

24  Then Festus said, King A-gripÆpa and all men who are here present with us, against this man whom you see, all the Jewish people have complained to me both at Jerusalem and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.

25:25  But when I came to understand him to have done nothing worthy of death, and also he had appealed to His Majesty the Emperor, I decided to send him.

25  But I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death: and as he himself appealed to the emperor I determined to send him.

25  Truly, I have discovered nothing brought forth against him that is worthy of death. But since he himself has appealed to Augustus, it was my judgment to send him.

25:26  About whom I have nothing certain to write to my lord. Therefore I have brought him before you, and especially before you King Agrippa, in order that when this hearing is finished I may have something to write.

26  But I have not determined what to write to the emperor about him. Because of this, I have brought him before you all, and especially before you, O king Agrippa, so that, once an inquiry has occurred, I may have something to write.

26  But I do not know what to write Caesar concerning him, therefore I was pleased to bring him before you, and especially before you, O King A-gripÆpa, so that when he is questioned, I may find somewhat to write.

25:27  For it seems unreasonable to me to send a prisoner and not to signify the accusations against him."

27  For it seemeth to me unreasonable, in sending a prisoner, not withal to signify the charges against him.

27  For it is not proper to send a prisoner, without writing down the charges against him.

26:1  Then Agrippa said to Paul, "It is permitted for you to speak for yourself."So Paul, having extended his hand, spoke in his own defense

1  And Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth his hand, and made his defence

1  Yet truly, Agrippa said to Paul, “It is permitted for you to speak for yourself.” Then Paul, extending his hand, began to offer his defense.

26:2  I have considered myself fortunate, King Agrippa, being able to speak in my own defense today, concerning all the things of which I am accused of by the Jews,

2  I think myself happy, king Agrippa, that I am to make my defense before thee this day touching all the things whereof I am accused by the Jews

2  In view of all the things whereof I am accused by the Jews, I consider myself blessed, O King A-gripÆpa, to defend myself today before you.

26:3  especially since you are well versed both in all the customs and questions in relation to the Jews; therefore I beg you to hear me patiently.

3  especially because thou art expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.

26:4  Therefore my way of life from my youth, which from the beginning was spent among my own nation in Jerusalem, all the Jews know,

4  And certainly, all the Jews know about my life from my youth, which had its beginning among my own people in Jerusalem.

4  Even the Jews themselves, if they would be willing to testify, know well my manner of life from my childhood which started first among mine own people at Jerusalem.

26:5  since they have known me for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

5  For they have been acquainted with me a long time, and know that I was brought up with the excellent doctrine of the PharÆi-sees.

26:6  And now for the hope of the promise having been made by God to the fathers, I stand before you judged,

6  And now, it is in the hope of the Promise which was made by God to our fathers that I stand subject to judgment.

6  And now I stand and am on trial for the hope of the promise made of God to our fathers.

26:7  [a promise] to which our twelve tribes, as they earnestly serve God night and day, hope to attain. Concerning which hope I am accused by [the] Jews, King Agrippa.

7  It is the Promise that our twelve tribes, worshiping night and day, hope to see. About this hope, O king, I am accused by the Jews.

7  It is to the fulfillment of this hope that our twelve tribes expect to come, by means of earnest prayers day and night. And for this very hopeÆs sake, I am accused by the Jews, O King A-gripÆpa.

26:8  Why is it considered [such ]an unbelievable thing by you [people ]if God raises the dead?

8  How can you judge? Is it improper to believe that God can raise the dead?

8  Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?

26:9  Therefore I thought in myself that it was necessary to do many hostile things against the name of Jesus the Nazarene;

26:10  which also I did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were being put to death, I cast my vote against them.

10  This is also how I acted at Jerusalem. And so, I enclosed many holy persons in prison, having received authority from the leaders of the priests. And when they were to be killed, I brought the sentence.

26:11  And I punished them often in all the synagogues, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even as far as to foreign cities.

11  And I tortured them in every synagogue, thus compelling them to blaspheme the name of Jesus; and being exceedingly mad against them, I also went to other cities to persecute them.

26:12  "In which [pursuits] also, as I traveled to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,

12  Whereupon as I journeyed to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests,

12  I was on the way to Damascus for this purpose, with authority and commission from the chief priests, when,

26:13  at midday, O king, along the road I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and those traveling with me.

13  At mid-day on the road, O king, I saw a light from heaven more powerful than that of the sun, shining round about me and upon those who journeyed with me.

26:14  And when we all had fallen down to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me and saying in the Hebrew language, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.'

14  And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice saying unto me in the Hebrew language, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the goad.

14  When we all fell to the ground, then I heard a voice speaking unto me, in the Hebrew tongue (Ar-a-maÆic), Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the pricks.

26:15  "So I said, 'Who are You, Lord?' And He said, 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

15  And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.

26:16  But arise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness both [of the things] which you have seen, and [of the things] which I will yet reveal to you,

16  But arise, and stand upon thy feet: for to this end have I appeared unto thee, to appoint thee a minister and a witness both of the things wherein thou hast seen me, and of the things wherein I will appear unto thee;

16  But rise up and stand on your feet. For I appeared to you for this reason: so that I may establish you as a minister and a witness concerning the things that you have seen, and concerning the things that I will show to you

26:17  delivering you from the people, and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you,

17  rescuing you from the people and the nations to which I am now sending you,

17  And I will deliver you from the Jewish people, and from the other people to whom I send you;

26:18  to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the authority of Satan to God, [in order for ]them to receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.'

18  to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive remission of sins and an inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith in me.

18  in order to open their eyes, so that they may be converted from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive the remission of sins and a place among the saints, through the faith that is in me.’

26:19  "Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision,

19  From then on, O king Agrippa, I was not unbelieving to the heavenly vision.

19  Whereupon, O King A-gripÆpa, I did not disobey the heavenly vision

26:20  but to those first in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and to the Gentiles, proclaiming that they must repent and turn to God, and do works worthy of repentance.

20  but declared both to them of Damascus first and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judaea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.

20  But I preached, first to those who are at Damascus and at Jerusalem, and then to the entire region of Judea, and to the Gentiles, so that they would repent and convert to God, doing the works that are worthy of repentance.

26:21  Because of these things the Jews arrested me in the temple and attempted to kill me.

21  For this cause the Jews seized me in the temple, and assayed to kill me.

21  It was for this reason that the Jews, having apprehended me when I was in the temple, attempted to kill me.

26:22  Therefore, having obtained help from God, until this day I stand, witnessing both to common [people] and great [people], saying nothing except the things which both the prophets and Moses spoke of as being about to happen,

22  Having therefore obtained the help that is from God, I stand unto this day testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses did say should come;

22  But having been aided by the help of God, even to this day, I stand witnessing to the small and the great, saying nothing beyond what the Prophets and Moses have said would be in the future

26:23  that the Christ was to suffer, that as the first to rise from the dead, He was about to proclaim light to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles."

23  how that the Christ must suffer, [and] how that he first by the resurrection of the dead should proclaim light both to the people and to the Gentiles.

23  That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first to rise from the dead, and that he should preach light to the people and to the Gentiles.

26:24  Now as he spoke these things, Festus said with a loud voice, "You are mad, Paul! Your higher learning is driving you to madness!"

24  While he was speaking these things and presenting his defense, Festus said with a loud voice: “Paul, you are insane! Too much studying has turned you to insanity.”

24  And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.

26:25  But he said, "I am not mad, most excellent Festus, but I boldly declare words of truth and reason.

25  But Paul saith, I am not mad, most excellent Festus; but speak forth words of truth and soberness.

25  And Paul said: “I am not insane, most excellent Festus, but rather I am speaking words of truth and sobriety.

26:26  For the king knows about these things, to whom also I speak freely; for I am persuaded that none of these things escapes his notice, since this thing was not done in a corner.

26  And King A-gripÆpa is also familiar with these things, and this is why I am speaking openly before him: because I think not one of these words has been hidden from him; for they were not done in secret.

26:27  "Do you believe the prophets, King Agrippa? I know that you believe."

27  King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.

26:28  And Agrippa said to Paul, "In a short time, you are persuading me to become a Christian!"

28  Then Agrippa said to Paul, “To some extent, you persuade me to become a Christian.”

26:29  And Paul said, "I would pray to God, both in a short time and a long time, not only you, but also all who are hearing me today, would become such as I am, except for these chains."

26:30  When he had said these things, the king stood up, as well as the governor and Bernice and those sitting together with them;

30  And the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them

30  And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them

26:31  and when they withdrew, they were speaking among themselves, saying, "This man practices nothing worthy of death or chains."

31  and when they had withdrawn, they spake one to another, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds.

26:32  Then Agrippa said to Festus, "This man could have been released if he had not appealed to Caesar."

32  And Agrippa said unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar.

27:1  Now when it was decided that we should sail away to Italy, they handed over both Paul and certain other prisoners to a centurion named Julius, of the Augustan Regiment.

1  Then it was decided to send him by ship to Italy, and that Paul, with the others in custody, should be delivered to a centurion named Julius, of the cohort of Augusta.

27:2  And having boarded a ship of Adramyttium, scheduled to sail to the ports along the Asian coasts, we put to sea. Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.

2  After climbing aboard a ship from Adramyttium, we set sail and began to navigate along the ports of Asia, with Aristarchus, the Macedonian from Thessalonica, joining us.

2  When we were ready to sail, we embarked in a ship of the city of Ad-ra-mytÆti-um, bound for Asia Minor, and there boarded the ship with us, Ar-is-tarÆchus a Mac-e-doÆnian of the city of Thes-sa-lo-niÆca.

27:3  And the next day we put in to harbor at Sidon. And Julius treated Paul kindly, and permitted [him] to go to [his] friends to find care.

3  And on the following day, we arrived at Sidon. And Julius, treating Paul humanely, permitted him to go to his friends and to look after himself.

3  And the next day, we arrived at Sidon. And the centurion treated Paul with kindness, permitting him to visit his friends and to rest.

27:4  And from there having put to sea, we sailed under the sheltered side of Cyprus, because the winds were against us.

4  And when we had set sail from there, we navigated below Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

27:5  And having sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we docked at Myra, in Lycia.

5  And when we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, [a city] of Lycia.

5  And navigating though the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we arrived at Lystra, which is in Lycia.

27:6  And there the centurion found an Alexandrian ship sailing to Italy, and he put us aboard in it.

27:7  And sailing slowly many days, and with difficulty arriving down off Cnidus, since the wind would not permit us to go on, we sailed under the sheltered side of Crete, down off Salmone.

7  And when we had sailed slowly many days, and were come with difficulty over against Cnidus, the wind not further suffering us, we sailed under the lee of Crete, over against Salmone;

7  And because for a number of days she sailed slowly, we arrived with difficulty towards the Island of CniÆdus; and because the wind would not allow us to sail in a straight course, we had to sail around Crete towards the city of Sal-moÆne;

27:8  And with difficulty sailing past it, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea.

8  And barely being able to sail past it, we arrived at a certain place, which is called Good Shelter, next to which was the city of Lasea.

8  And as we hardly passed around it, we arrived at a place which is called The Fair Havens; and nearby was the city of La-seÆa.

27:9  Now when much time had been spent, the voyage having already become dangerous, because the Fast had already gone by, Paul recommended,

9  Then, after much time had passed, and since sailing would no longer be prudent because the Fast Day had now passed, Paul consoled them,

9  There we remained for a long time, till also the day of the Jewish fast was over and, since it had now become dangerous for any one to sail, Paul gave them advice,

27:10  saying to them, "Men, I perceive this voyage is going to be with hardship and much loss, not only of the cargo and of the ship but also our lives."

10  and said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the lading and the ship, but also of our lives.

27:11  But the centurion was persuaded by the helmsman and the ship owner, rather than by the things being said by Paul.

11  But the centurion gave more heed to the master and to the owner of the ship, than to those things which were spoken by Paul.

11  Nevertheless, the centurion listened to the master and owner of the ship more than to the words of Paul.

27:12  And because the harbor was not suitable to winter in, the majority gave counsel to put to sea from there, if perhaps they might be able to get to Phoenix to spend the winter there, a harbor of Crete opening toward the southwest and to the northwest.

12  And as the harbor was not commodious for wintering in, many of us were desirous to sail from thence, and if possible to reach and winter in a harbor at Crete, which is called Phe-niÆce, which lies towards the south.

27:13  And when a south wind blew gently, supposing they had attained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along close in shore to Crete.

13  And since the south wind was blowing gently, they thought that they might reach their goal. And after they had set out from Asson, they weighed anchor at Crete.

13  And when the south wind blew softly, they thought they could reach their destination as they had desired, and we sailed around Crete.

27:14  But not long after, a head wind like a hurricane arose, called [a ]Euroclydon;

14  But after no long time there beat down from it a tempestuous wind, which is called Euraquilo

14  A short while after, there arose against us a hurricane called Ty-phonÆic Eu-rocÆlydon.

27:15  and when the ship was seized by it, and not being able to face into the wind, we were being driven along, [having ]given in [to the wind.]

15  and when the ship was caught, and could not face the wind, we gave way [to it,] and were driven.

15  And once the ship had been caught in it and was not able to strive against the wind, giving over the ship to the winds, we were driven along.

27:16  And running under the sheltered side of a certain little island called Clauda, we secured the skiff with difficulty.

16  Then, being forced along a certain island, which is called the Tail, we were barely able to hold on to the ship’s lifeboat.

16  And as we passed under the lee of an island which is called ClauÆda, we could hardly man the shipÆs boat.

27:17  And having hoisted it up, they used cables for undergirding the ship; and being afraid lest they run aground in the Syrtes [Shallows], they let down the driving anchor, thus they were being driven along [by the wind.]

17  And when we had launched it, we began undergirding and repairing the ship; and because we were afraid of grounding, we lowered the sail, and so we drifted.

17  Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven.

27:18  And because we were exceedingly tempest-tossed, the next day they lightened the ship.

18  And as we labored exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw the [the freight] overboard;

27:19  And on the third day we threw off the equipment of the ship with our own hands.

19  and the third day they cast out with their own hands the tackling of the ship.

27:20  And neither the sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small storm pressed on us, finally all hope for us to be saved was taken away.

20  Then, when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no end to the storm was imminent, all hope for our safety was now taken away.

20  And as the winter was so severe that for many days, neither sun nor stars could be seen, all hope of surviving was given up.

27:21  Now when they had abstained from food for a long time, then stood Paul in the midst of them and said, "Men, you should have followed my advice and not put to sea from Crete, and to spare [yourselves ]this hardship and loss.

21  And after they had fasted for a long time, Paul, standing in their midst, said: “Certainly, men, you should have listened to me and not set out from Crete, so as to cause this injury and loss.

21  And as no man among them had eaten anything, Paul stood up in the midst of them, and said, Men, if you had listened to me, we would not have sailed from Crete, and we would have been spared this loss and suffering.

27:22  And now I urge you to keep up [your] courage, for there will be loss of not one life among you, only of the ship.

22  Now let me counsel you not to be depressed: for not a single life among you will be lost, but only the ship.

27:23  For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong, whom also I serve,

23  For an Angel of God, who is assigned to me and whom I serve, stood beside me this night,

27:24  saying, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; for it is necessary for you to stand before Caesar; and behold, God has granted you all those sailing with you.'

24  saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must stand before Caesar: and lo, God hath granted thee all them that sail with thee.

24  And he said to me, Fear not, Paul; you must stand before Cµsar: and behold, God has given to you all of them who sail with you.

27:25  "Therefore keep up your courage, men; for I believe God that it will be in the very manner it has been spoken to me.

25  Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even so as it hath been spoken unto me.

25  Because of this, men, be courageous in soul. For I trust God that this will happen in the same way that it has been told to me.

27:26  However, it is necessary [for] us to run aground on a certain island."

26  But we must be cast upon a certain island.

26  However, we will be cast upon an island.

27:27  Now when it was the fourteenth night, as we were driven about in the Adriatic Sea, in the middle of the night the sailors sensed that land was approaching them.

27  And after fourteen days of being lost and weary in the sea of AÆdri-a, about midnight the sailors thought they were drawing near to land.

27  But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some country;

27:28  And having taken a sounding, they found it to be twenty fathoms; and when they had gone a little farther, they took soundings again and found it to be fifteen fathoms;

28  and they sounded, and found twenty fathoms; and after a little space, they sounded again, and found fifteen fathoms.

27:29  and being afraid lest we should run aground on the rocks, they threw out four anchors from the stern, and were praying for day to come.

29  Then, fearing that we might happen upon rough places, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and they were hoping for daylight to arrive soon.

27:30  Now as the sailors were seeking to flee from the ship, and letting down the skiff into the sea, in pretense of spreading out anchors from the prow,

30  Yet truly, the sailors were seeking a way to flee from the ship, for they had lowered a lifeboat into the sea, on the pretext that they were attempting to cast anchors from the bow of the ship.

30  And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship,

27:31  Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "If these men do not remain in the ship, you cannot be saved."

31  So Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, “Unless these men remain in the ship, you will not be able to be saved.”

31  And when Paul found it out, he said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Unless these men remain on board the ship, you cannot be saved.

27:32  Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the skiff and let it fall off.

27:33  And until the [time] was about to be day, Paul was urging them all to receive their share of food, saying, "Today is the fourteenth day you continue waiting without eating, having taken nothing.

33  And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take some food, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye wait and continue fasting, having taken nothing.

33  But Paul till the early morning kept begging them all to eat, saying to them, Today is the fourteenth day since you have tasted anything because of fear.

27:34  Therefore I urge you to take food, for this is for your deliverance; for not a hair from your head shall fall."

34  Wherefore I beseech you to take some food: for this is for your safety: for there shall not a hair perish from the head of any of you.

34  For this reason, I beg you to accept food for the sake of your health. For not a hair from the head of any of you shall perish.”

27:35  And having said these things and having taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all, and having broken it, he began to eat.

35  And when he had said this, and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all; and he brake it, and began to eat.

27:36  And they all became cheerful and also took food themselves.

36  Then they were all cheerful, and received nourishment.

36  Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat.

27:37  And in all we were two hundred and seventy-six persons on the ship.

37  Truly, we were two hundred and seventy-six souls on the ship.

37  We were in all, on board, two hundred and seventy-six persons.

27:38  And having eaten enough, they began lightening the ship and throwing out the wheat into the sea.

38  And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea.

27:39  Now when it became day, they did not recognize the land; but they noticed a certain bay which had a beach, on which they resolved, if possible, to run the ship ashore.

27:40  And casting off the anchors, they were leaving them in the sea, meanwhile loosening the ropes of the rudders; and having raised the mainsail to the wind, they began steering toward the beach.

40  And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves to the sea, at the same time loosing the restraints of the rudders. And so, raising the mainsail to the gusting wind, they pressed on toward the shore.

40  So they cut off the anchors from the ship, and threw them into the sea, and loosed the rudder ropes, then they hoisted the topsail to the wind, and sailed toward shore.

27:41  But they struck a reef and ran the vessel aground, and the prow became stuck and remained unmoved, but the stern was being broken up by the violence of the waves.

41  And when we happened upon a place open to two seas, they ran the ship aground. And indeed, the bow, being immobilized, remained fixed, but truly the stern was broken by the violence of the sea.

41  And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.

27:42  And the soldiers' decision was that they would kill the prisoners, lest any should swim away and escape.

42  Then the soldiers were in agreement that they should kill the prisoners, lest anyone, after escaping by swimming, might flee.

27:43  But the centurion, wanting to rescue Paul, hindered them in their intention, and commanded that those who were able to swim to jump down first to go toward the land,

43  But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, stayed them from their purpose; and commanded that they who could swim should cast themselves overboard, and get first to the land;

27:44  and the rest, some on boards and others on parts from the ship. And in this way it came about that all were brought to safety.

44  And as for the others, some they carried on boards, and others on those things that belonged to the ship. And so it happened that every soul escaped to the land.

44  The others he made cross over on boards and on broken pieces of the ship. In this manner, all of them escaped and reached shore safely.

28:1  And when they were rescued, then they learned that the island was called Malta.

1  And after we had escaped, we then realized that the island was called Malta. Yet truly, the natives offered us no small amount of humane treatment.

1  AFTERWARDS they learned that the island was called MelÆi-ta.

28:2  And the natives were showing us extraordinary kindness; for having kindled a fire they accepted us all into [their] society, because of the rain which had begun, and because of the cold.

2  And the barbarians showed us no common kindness; for they kindled a fire, and received us all, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.

2  For they refreshed us all by kindling a fire, because rain was imminent and because of the cold.

28:3  But when Paul had gathered a large bundle of sticks and put them on the fire, a viper having come out because of the heat, fastened on his hand.

3  And Paul picked up a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire and a scorpion driven by the heat, came out and bit his hand.

28:4  And when the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, "Certainly this man is a murderer, whom though he was rescued from the sea, justice does not permit to continue living."

4  And truly, when the natives saw the beast hanging from his hand, they were saying to one another: “Certainly, this man must be a murderer, for though he escaped from the sea, vengeance will not permit him to live.”

4  And when the barbarians saw it hanging from his hand, they said, It may be that this man is a murderer, whom though he has been rescued from the sea, yet justice does not permit him to live.

28:5  Then, having shaken off the creature into the fire, he suffered nothing harmful.

5  Howbeit he shook off the creature into the fire, and took no harm.

5  But Paul shook his hand and threw the viper into the fire, and felt no harm.

28:6  And they were expecting him to be about to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after they had waited for a long time and observed nothing unusual happening to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

6  However, the barbarians expected he would immediately swell up and fall to the ground dead: but after they had waited for a long while, and saw he had not been harmed, they changed their talk, and said that he was a god.

28:7  Now in the areas around that place were pieces of land [belonging] to the leading citizen of the island, named Publius, who welcomed us, and received us hospitably as guests for three days.

7  In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.

28:8  And it came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and dysentery, to whom Paul came in and prayed, and laying his hands on him, healed him.

8  Then it happened that the father of Publius lay ill with a fever and with dysentery. Paul entered to him, and when he had prayed and had laid his hands on him, he saved him.

8  But the father of PubÆli-us was sick with fever and dysentery: so Paul went in to where he was lying and prayed, then he laid his hand on him and healed him.

28:9  Then after this happened, also the rest who were ill on the island were coming to him and were being healed,

9  And when this was done, the rest also that had diseases in the island came, and were cured

9  So when this was done, others also sick in the island, came, and were healed.

28:10  who also honored us with many honors, and when we put to sea, they gave us the things that we needed.

10  And then they also presented us with many honors. And when we were ready to set sail, they gave us whatever we needed.

10  The inhabitants honored us with great honors: and when we departed from thence, they ladened us with provisions.

28:11  Now after three months we put to sea in a ship that had wintered on the island, [belonging] to Alexandria, with the figurehead of the Twin Brothers.

11  And so, after three months, we sailed in a ship from Alexandria, whose name was ‘the Castors,’ and which had wintered at the island.

11  After three months we departed, sailing in an Al-ex-anÆdri-an ship, which had wintered in the island, and which bore the sign of Castor and Pollux.

28:12  And putting in to harbor at Syracuse, we stayed there three days,

12  And when we had arrived at Syracuse, we were delayed there for three days.

12  Landing at Syracuse, we remained there for three days.

28:13  from where having sailed around we arrived at Rhegium. And after one day arose a south wind, on the second day we came to Puteoli,

13  And from thence we made a circuit, and arrived at Rhegium: and after one day a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli;

13  From there we circled around, and arrived at RheÆgi-um city. After a day the south wind blew in our favor, and in two days, we came to Pu-teÆo-li, an Italian city,

28:14  where having found brothers, we were urged by them to stay for seven days; and so we came to Rome.

14  where we found brethren, and were entreated to tarry with them seven days: and so we came to Rome.

14  There, after locating the brothers, we were asked to remain with them for seven days. And then we went on to Rome.

28:15  And from there the brothers, when they heard about our circumstances, they came to meet with us as far as Appii Forum and Three Inns, whom when Paul saw, he gave thanks to God and took courage.

15  And there, when the brothers had heard of us, they went to meet us as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns. And when Paul had seen them, giving thanks to God, he took courage.

15  When the brethren there heard of us, they came out to meet us as far as the street which is called ApÆpi-i-foÆrum and The Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God, and was greatly encouraged.

28:16  Now when we came to Rome, the centurion handed over the prisoners to the captain of the guard; but Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier guarding him.

16  And when we entered into Rome, Paul was suffered to abide by himself with the soldier that guarded him.

16  Then we entered Rome, and the centurion gave permission to Paul to live wherever he pleased with a soldier to guard him.

28:17  And it came to pass after three days that Paul called together those who were prominent among the Jews; and when they had come together, he said to them: "Men, brothers, though I have done nothing against the people or the customs of our forefathers, yet I was handed over as a prisoner from Jerusalem, into the hands of the Romans,

17  And after the third day, he called together the leaders of the Jews. And when they had convened, he said to them: “Noble brothers, I have done nothing against the people, nor against the customs of the fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

28:18  who, when they had examined me, were wanting to release me because there was no cause for my case.

18  And after they held a hearing about me, they would have released me, because there was no case for death against me.

28:19  But when the Jews spoke in opposition, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything of which to accuse my nation.

19  But with the Jews speaking against me, I was constrained to appeal to Caesar, though it was not as if I had any kind of accusation against my own nation.

19  But as the Jews stood against me I was obliged to appeal to Cµsar; not that I had anything of which to accuse my own people.

28:20  Therefore for this reason I have requested you, to see and to speak to you, for because of the hope of Israel I am wearing this chain."

20  For this cause therefore did I entreat you to see and to speak with [me]: for because of the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

20  This is the reason I begged you to come, for I wish to see you and to relate these things to you; because it is for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

28:21  Then they said to him, "We neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brothers who arrived report or speak anything evil about you.

21  And they said unto him, We neither received letters from Judaea concerning thee, nor did any of the brethren come hither and report or speak any harm of thee.

28:22  But we request to hear from you the[ ]things which you think; for concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against."

22  But we are asking to hear your opinions from you, for concerning this sect, we know that it is being spoken against everywhere.”

22  Nevertheless, we desire to hear what you have to say, but if it is concerning this teaching, we know well that it is not acceptable to any one, and we do not want to hear about it.

28:23  And having appointed for him a day, many came to him at his house, to whom he was explaining and solemnly testifying to the kingdom of God, and persuading them of the things concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and from the Prophets, from morning till evening.

23  And when they had appointed a day for him, very many persons went to him at his guest quarters. And he discoursed, testifying to the kingdom of God, and persuading them about Jesus, using the law of Moses and the Prophets, from morning until evening.

23  So they appointed a day for him and many gathered together and came to him where he was staying; and he explained to them about the Kingdom of God, thus testifying and persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

28:24  And some were persuaded by the things being said, but others refused to believe.

24  And some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.

24  And some of them harkened to his words, but others paid no attention.

28:25  And being in disagreement with one another, they went away after Paul had said one word: "The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,

25  And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Spirit through Isaiah the prophet unto your fathers,

25  And as they were dismissed, disagreeing Acts 28 Paul preaches in Rome for two years. among themselves, Paul said to them this saying, Well spoke the Holy Spirit by the mouth of the prophet I-saÆiah against your fathers,

28:26  saying, 'Go to this people and say: "Hearing you will hear, and by no means understand; and seeing you shall see, and by no means perceive;

26  saying, Go thou unto this people, and say, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand; And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive

28:27  For the hearts of this people has become dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and they should hear with their ears, lest they should understand with their heart and turn back, so that I should heal them."'

27  For this people`s heart is waxed gross, And their ears are dull of hearing, And their eyes they have closed; Lest, haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them.

27  For the heart of this people has grown dull, and they have listened with reluctant ears, and they have closed their eyes tightly, lest perhaps they might see with the eyes, and hear with the ears, and understand with the heart, and so be converted, and I would heal them.’

28:28  "Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!"

28  Be it known therefore unto you, that this salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles: they will also hear.

28  Let this be known to you therefore: that this salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles, for they will listen to it.

28:29  And when he had said these things, the Jews went away, having a great dispute among themselves.

28:30  Then Paul remained two full years in his own rented house, and he was receiving all those who were coming to him,

30  And he abode two whole years in his own hired dwelling, and received all that went in unto him,

30  And Paul hired a house for himself at his own expense and lived in it for two years; there he received all who came to him,

28:31  preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things concerning YHWH Jesus Christ with all boldness, without hindrance.
