1  Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as YHWH spoke unto me; and we compassed mount Seir many days.

1  And we turned and departed into the wilderness, by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord spoke to me, and we compassed mount Seir many days.

1  “And setting out from there, we arrived at the wilderness which leads to the Red Sea, just as the Lord had spoken to me. And we encompassed Mount Seir for a long time.

2  And YHWH spoke unto me, saying

2  And the Lord said to me,

3  'Ye have compassed this mountain long enough; turn you northward.

3  ‘You have encompassed this mountain for long enough. Go forth, toward the north.

4  And command thou the people, saying: Ye are to pass through the border of your brethren the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you; take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore;

4  And charge the people, saying, Ye are going through the borders of your brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they shall fear you, and dread you greatly.

4  And instruct the people, saying: You shall cross through the borders of your brothers, the sons of Esau, who live at Seir, and they will fear you.

5  contend not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.

5  Do not engage in war against them, for I will not give you of their land even enough to set your foot upon, for I have given mount Seir to the children of Esau as an inheritance.

5  Therefore, take care diligently, lest you be moved against them. For I will not give to you from their land even as much as the step that one foot can tread upon, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.

6  Ye shall purchase food of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.

6  Buy food of them for money and eat, and ye shall receive water of them by measure for money, and drink.

6  You shall buy food from them for money, and you shall eat. You shall draw water for money, and you shall drink.

7  For YHWH thy God hath blessed thee in all the work of thy hand; He hath known thy walking through this great wilderness; these forty years the YHWH thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.'

7  The Lord your God has blessed you in every work of your hands. The Lord your God, dwelling with you, knows your journey, how you crossed through this great wilderness over forty years, and how you have been lacking in nothing.’

7  For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hands: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing. And I am sending messengers to king Edom to say: I shall cross over your land. Not I shall turn in the field and in the gardens, and not we shall drink from the wells. By the way of the king we shall go and not we shall turn right and left until we have crossed over boundary of you. And he said: You shall not cross in me, lest in sword I shall go out to meet you.

8  So we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah, from Elath and from Ezion-geber. And we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

8  And we passed by our brethren the children of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, by the way of Araba from Ælon and from Gesion Gaber; and we turned and passed by the way of the desert of Moab.

8  And when we had passed through our brothers, the sons of Esau, who were living at Seir by the way of the plain from Elath and from Eziongeber, we arrived at the way which leads to the desert of Moab.

9  And YHWH said unto me: 'Be not at enmity with Moab, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give thee of his land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.--

9  And the Lord said to me, Do not ye quarrel with the Moabites, and do not engage in war with them; for I will not give you of their land for an inheritance, for I have given Aroer to the children of Lot to inherit.

9  And the Lord said to me: ‘You should not fight against the Moabites, nor should you go to battle against them. For I will not give to you anything from their land, because I have given Ar to the sons of Lot as a possession.’

10  The Emim dwelt therein aforetime, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim;

10  Formerly the Ommin dwelt in it, a great and numerous nation and powerful, like the Enakim.

10  The Emim were the first of its inhabitants, a people great and strong, and of such great height, like the race of the Anakim.

11  these also are accounted Rephaim, as the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim.

11  They were considered to be like giants, and they were like the sons of the Anakim. And, indeed, the Moabites call them: the Emim.

11  For they were giants, and also were accounted as giants; but the Moabites call them Amney.

12  And in Seir dwelt the Horites aforetime, but the children of Esau succeeded them; and they destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which YHWH gave unto them.--

12  The Horites also formerly lived at Seir. When these had been driven out and destroyed, the sons of Esau lived there, just as Israel did in the land of his possession, which the Lord gave to him.

12  The Hori also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, and they had destroyed them, LORD, from before them, and possessed and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the LORD gave unto them.

13  Now rise up, and get you over the brook Zered.' And we went over the brook Zered.

13  Now then, arise ye, said I, and depart, and cross the valley of Zaret.

13  Then, rising up so as to cross over the torrent Zered, we arrived at the place.

14  And the days in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, were thirty and eight years; until all the generation, even the men of war, were consumed from the midst of the camp, as YHWH swore unto them.

14  Then, from the time that we advanced from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the torrent Zered, there were thirty-eight years, until the entire generation of the men who were fit for war had been consumed out of the camp, just as the Lord had sworn.

14  And the time in which we journeyed from Rakim-gia until we crossed the brook Zered was thirty-eight years; until all the generation of the men of war had perished from the midst of the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them.

15  Moreover the hand of YHWH was against them, to discomfit them from the midst of the camp, until they were consumed.

15  For his hand was against them, so that they would pass away from the midst of the camp.

16  So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,

16  And it came to pass when all the men of war dying out of the midst of the people had fallen,

16  Then, after all the fighting men had fallen,

17  that YHWH spoke unto me saying

17  that the Lord spoke to me, saying,

18  'Thou art this day to pass over the border of Moab, even Ar;

18  ‘Today, you shall cross the borders of Moab, at the city named Ar.

18  You are to pass over through the border of Moab and Ad this day;

19  and when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, harass them not, nor contend with them; for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.--

19  and ye shall draw nigh to the children of Amman: do not quarrel with them, nor wage war with them; for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Amman for an inheritance, because I have given it to the children of Lot for an inheritance.

19  And when you have arrived in the vicinity of the sons of Ammon, be careful that you do not fight against them, nor should you be moved to battle. For I will not give to you from the land of the sons of Ammon, because I have given it to the sons of Lot as a possession.’

20  That also is accounted a land of Rephaim: Rephaim dwelt therein aforetime; but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,

20  (That also was accounted a land of giants; giants dwelt in it formerly; and the Ammonites call them Zamzumins;

21  a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim; but YHWH destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead;

21  A great nation and populous, and mightier than you, as also the Enakim: yet the Lord destroyed them from before them, and they inherited their land, and they dwelt there instead of them until this day.

21  They are a people, great and numerous, and of lofty stature, like the Anakim, whom the Lord wiped away before their face. And he caused them to live there in place of them,

22  as He did for the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day;

22  just as he had done for the sons of Esau, who live at Seir, wiping out the Horites and delivering their land to them, which they possess even to the present time.

23  and the Avvim, that dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, that came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.--

23  And the Evites who dwell in Asedoth to Gaza, and the Cappadocians who came out of Cappadocia, destroyed them, and dwelt in their room.

23  Likewise the Hevites, who were living in small villages as far as Gaza, were expelled by the Cappadocians, who went forth from Cappadocia, and they wiped them out and lived in their place.

24  Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of Arnon; behold, I have given into thy hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

25  This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the peoples that are under the whole heaven, who, when they hear the report of thee, shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.'

25  Begin to put thy terror and thy fear on the face of all the nations under heaven, who shall be troubled when they have heard thy name, and shall be in anguish before thee.

25  Today I will begin to send the terror and dread of you among the peoples who are living under all of heaven, so that, when they hear your name, they may be afraid, and may tremble in the manner of a woman giving birth, and may be gripped by anguish.’

26  And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying

26  And I sent ambassadors from the wilderness of Kedamoth to Seon king of Esebon with peaceable words, saying,

26  Therefore, I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon, the king of Heshbon, with peaceful words, saying

27  'Let me pass through thy land; I will go along by the highway, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.

27  I will pass through thy land: I will go by the road, I will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

27  ‘We will cross through your land. We will advance by the public way. We will not turn aside, neither to the right, nor to the left.

28  Thou shalt sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink; only let me pass through on my feet;

28  Sell us food for a price, so that we may eat. Provide us with water for money, and so we will drink. We only ask that you allow us to pass through,

29  as the children of Esau that dwell in Seir, and the Moabites that dwell in Ar, did unto me; until I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which YHWH our God giveth us.'

29  just as the sons of Esau have done, who live at Seir, and the Moabites, who abide in Ar, until we arrive at the Jordan, and we cross to the land which the Lord our God will give to us.’

30  But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for YHWH thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.

30  And Seon king of Esebon would not that we should pass by him, because the Lord our God hardened his spirit, and made his heart stubborn, that he might be delivered into thy hands, as on this day.

30  And Sihon, the king of Heshbon, was not willing to grant passage to us. For the Lord your God had hardened his spirit, and had fastened his heart, so that he would be delivered into your hands, just as you now see.

31  And YHWH said unto me: 'Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before thee; begin to possess his land.'

31  And the Lord said to me, Behold, I have begun to deliver before thee Seon the king of Esebon the Amorite, and his land, and do thou begin to inherit his land.

31  And the Lord said to me: ‘Behold, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his land to you. Begin to possess it.’

32  Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, unto battle at Jahaz.

32  And Seon the king of Esebon came forth to meet us, he and all his people to war at Jassa.

32  And Sihon went out to meet us with all his people, to battle at Jahaz.

33  And YHWH our God delivered him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

33  And the Lord our God delivered him before our face, and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

34  And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every city, the men, and the women, and the little ones; we left none remaining;

34  And we took possession of all his cities at that time, and we utterly destroyed every city in succession, and their wives, and their children; we left no living prey.

34  And we seized all his cities at that time, putting to death their inhabitants: men as well as women and children. We left nothing of them,

35  only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we had taken.

35  Only we took the cattle captive, and took the spoil of the cities.

35  except the cattle, which went to the share of those who plundered them. And we seized the spoils of the cities,

36  From Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, even unto Gilead, there was not a city too high for us: YHWH our God delivered up all before us.

36  From Aroer, which is by the brink of the brook of Arnon, and the city which is in the valley, and as far as the mount of Galaad; there was not a city which escaped us: the Lord our God delivered all of them into our hands.

37  Only to the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not near; all the side of the river Jabbok, and the cities of the hill- country, and wheresoever YHWH our God forbade us.

37  except the land of the sons of Ammon, which we did not approach, and all that is adjacent to the torrent Jabbok, and the cities in the mountains, and all the places which the Lord our God prohibited to us.”

37  Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the LORD our God forbad us.

3:1  Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, unto battle at Edrei.

1  And we turned and went by the way leading to Basan; and Og the king of Basan came out to meet us, he and all his people, to battle at Edraim.

1  “And so, having turned back, we ascended by the way of Bashan. And Og, the king of Bashan, went forth with his people to meet us in warfare at Edrei.

3:2  And YHWH said unto me: 'Fear him not; for I have delivered him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.'

2  And the Lord said to me, Fear him not, for I have delivered him, and all his people, and all his land, into thy hands; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst to Seon king of the Amorites who dwelt in Esebon.

3:3  So YHWH our God delivered into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people; and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.

3  And the Lord our God delivered him into our hands, even Og the king of Basan, and all his people; and we smote him until we left none of his seed.

3  Therefore, the Lord our God delivered into our hands, now Og, the king of Bashan, and all his people. And we struck them down unto utter annihilation,

3:4  And we took all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we took not from them; threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

4  laying waste to all his cities at one time. There was not a village which escaped from us: sixty cities, the entire region of Argob, the kingdom of Og, in Bashan.

3:5  All these were fortified cities, with high walls, gates, and bars; beside the unwalled towns a great many.

5  all strong cities, lofty walls, gates and bars; besides the very many cities of the Pherezites.

5  All the cities were fortified with very high walls, and with gates and bars, in addition to innumerable villages which had no walls.

3:6  And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying every city, the men, and the women, and the little ones.

6  We utterly destroyed them as we dealt with Seon the king of Esebon, so we utterly destroyed every city in order, and the women and the children,

6  And we wiped them out, just as we had done to Sihon, the king of Heshbon, destroying every city, and its men, as well as women and children.

3:7  But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey unto ourselves.

7  and all the cattle; and we took for a prey to ourselves the spoil of the cities.

7  But the cattle and the spoils of the cities, we plundered.

3:8  And we took the land at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond the Jordan, from the valley of Arnon unto mount Hermon--

8  And at that time, we took the land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites, who were across the Jordan: from the torrent Arnon as far as Mount Hermon,

3:9  which Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir--

9  The Phoenicians call Aermon Sanior, but the Amorite has called it Sanir.

3:10  all the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Salcah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.--

10  all the cities that are situated in the plain, and the entire land of Gilead and Bashan, all the way to Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

3:11  For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the Rephaim; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbah of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.--

11  For only Og the king of Basan was left of the Raphain: behold, his bed was a bed of iron; behold, it is in the chief city of the children of Ammon; the length of it is nine cubits, and the breadth of it four cubits, according to the cubit of a man.

11  For only Og, the king of Bashan, was left behind out of the race of the giants. His bed of iron is on display, (it is in Rabbah, among the sons of Ammon) being nine cubits in length, and four in width, according to the measure of the cubit of a man’s hand.

3:12  And this land we took in possession at that time; from Aroer, which is by the valley of Arnon, and half the hill-country of Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites;

12  And we inherited that land at that time from Aroer, which is by the border of the torrent Arnon, and half the mount of Galaad; and I gave his cities to Ruben and to Gad.

12  And this land we possessed at that time, from Adoer, which is by the river of Arnon; and half of mount Gilead, and its cities, I gave to the Reubenites and to the Gadites.

3:13  and the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half-tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob--all that Bashan is called the land of Rephaim.

13  Then I delivered the remaining part of Gilead, and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, which is the entire region of Argob, to one half of the tribe of Manasseh. And all of Bashan is called the land of the giants.

3:14  Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, unto the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called them, even Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth-jair, unto this day.--

14  And Jair the son of Manasse took all the country round about Argob as far as the borders of Gargasi and Machathi: he called them by his name Basan Thavoth Jair until this day.

14  Jair, the son of Manasseh, possessed all the region of Argob, as far as the borders of Geshur and Maacath. And he called Bashan by his own name, Havvoth Jair, that is, the villages of Jair, even to the present day.

3:15  And I gave Gilead unto Machir.

15  And to Machir I gave Galaad.

15  Likewise, to Machir, I gave Gilead.

3:16  And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the valley of Arnon, the middle of the valley for a border; even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon;

16  And to Ruben and to Gad I gave the land under Galaad as far as the brook of Arnon, the border between the brook and as far as Jaboc; the brook is the border to the children Amman.

16  And to the tribes of Ruben and Gad, I gave from the land of Gilead as far as the torrent Arnon, one half of the torrent and its confines, even to the torrent Jabbok, which is along the border of the sons of Ammon,

3:17  the Arabah also, the Jordan being the border thereof, from Chinnereth even unto the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah eastward.

17  And Araba and Jordan are the boundary of Machanareth, even to the sea of Araba, the salt sea under Asedoth Phasga eastward.

17  and the plain of the wilderness, as well as the Jordan, and the borders of Chinnereth, all the way to the sea of the desert, which is very salty, to the base of Mount Pisgah toward the east.

3:18  And I commanded you at that time, saying: 'YHWH your God hath given you this land to possess it; ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all the men of valour.

18  And I instructed you at that time, saying: ‘The Lord your God gives to you this land as an inheritance. Having armed yourselves, go before your brothers, the sons of Israel, all you strong men.

3:19  But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle--I know that ye have much cattle--shall abide in your cities which I have given you;

19  Leave behind your wives and little ones, as well as the cattle. For I know that you have many cattle, and they should remain in the cities which I have delivered to you,

3:20  until YHWH give rest unto your brethren, as unto you, and they also possess the land which the YHWH your God giveth them beyond the Jordan; then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.

20  until the Lord your God give your brethren rest, as also he has given to you, and they also shall inherit the land, which the Lord our God gives them on the other side of Jordan; then ye shall return, each one to his inheritance which I have given you.

3:21  And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying: 'Thine eyes have seen all that YHWH your God hath done unto these two kings; so shall the YHWH do unto all the kingdoms whither thou goest over.

21  Likewise, I instructed Joshua at that time, saying: ‘Your eyes have seen what the Lord your God has done to these two kings. So also will he do to all the kingdoms through which you shall pass.

3:22  Ye shall not fear them; for YHWH your God, He it is that fighteth for you.'

22  You should not fear them. For the Lord your God will fight on your behalf.’

3:23  And I besought YHWH at that time, saying

3:24  'O Lord GOD, Thou hast begun to show Thy servant Thy greatness, and Thy strong hand; for what god is there in heaven or on earth, that can do according to Thy works, and according to Thy mighty acts?

24  ‘Lord God, you have begun to reveal your greatness and your very strong hand to your servant. For there is no other god, either in heaven or on earth, who is able to accomplish your works, or to be compared to your strength.

3:25  Let me go over, I pray Thee, and see the good land that is beyond the Jordan, that goodly hill-country, and Lebanon.'

25  I will therefore go over and see this good land that is beyond Jordan, this good mountain and Antilibanus.

25  Therefore, I will cross over, and I will view this excellent land beyond the Jordan, and this singular mountain, and Lebanon.’

3:26  But YHWH was wroth with me for your sakes, and hearkened not unto me; and the YHWH said unto me: 'Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto Me of this matter.

26  And the Lord because of you did not regard me, and hearkened not to me; and the Lord said to me, Let it suffice thee, speak not of this matter to me any more.

3:27  Get thee up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold with thine eyes; for thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

27  Ascend to the summit of Pisgah, and look around with your eyes to the west, and to the north, and to the south, and to the east, and behold it. For you shall not cross this Jordan.

27  Go up to the top of the hill (Pisgah) and lift up your eyes eastward and westward and northward and southward, and behold it with your eyes; for you shall not cross this Jordan.

3:28  But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him; for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.'

28  Instruct Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him. For he shall go before this people, and he shall distribute to them the land that you will see.’

3:29  So we abode in the valley over against Beth-peor.

29  And we abode in the valley near the house of Phogor.

29  And we remained in the valley, opposite the shrine of Peor.”

4:1  And now, O Israel, hearken unto the statutes and unto the ordinances, which I teach you, to do them; that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which YHWH, the God of your fathers, giveth you.

4:2  Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keep the commandments of YHWH your God which I command you.

2  Ye shall not add to the word which I command you, and ye shall not take from it: keep the commandments of the Lord our God, all that I command you this day.

2  You shall not add to the word which I speak to you, neither shall you take away from it. Preserve the commandments of the Lord your God which I am teaching to you.

4:3  Your eyes have seen what YHWH did in Baal-peor; for all the men that followed the Baal of Peor, the YHWH thy God hath destroyed them from the midst of thee.

3  Your eyes have seen all that the Lord our God did in the case of Beel-phegor; for every man that went after Beel-phegor, the Lord your God has utterly destroyed him from among you.

3  Your eyes have seen all that the Lord has done against Baal-peor, in what manner he has crushed all of his worshippers from among you.

4:4  But ye that did cleave unto YHWH your God are alive every one of you this day.

4  But ye that kept close to the Lord your God are all alive to-day.

4  But you who adhere to the Lord your God are all still alive, to the present day.

4:5  Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as YHWH my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the midst of the land whither ye go in to possess it.

5  You know that I have taught you precepts as well as justices, just as the Lord my God has commanded me. And so shall you do in the land that you will possess.

4:6  Observe therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, that, when they hear all these statutes, shall say: 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.'

6  And ye shall keep and do them: for this is your wisdom and understanding before all nations, as many as shall hear all these ordinances; and they shall say, Behold, this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

4:7  For what great nation is there, that hath God so nigh unto them, as YHWH our God is whensoever we call upon Him?

7  Neither is there any other nation so great, which has its gods so near to them, as our God is present to all our petitions.

4:8  And what great nation is there, that hath statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?

8  And what manner of nation is so great, which has righteous ordinances and judgements according to all this law, which I set before you this day?

8  For what other nation is there so renowned as to have ceremonies, and just judgments, and the entire law that I will set forth today before your eyes?

4:9  Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes saw, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life; but make them known unto thy children and thy children's children;

9  And so, guard yourself and your soul carefully. You should not forget the words that your eyes have seen, and do not let them be cut away from your heart, throughout all the days of your life. You shall teach them to your sons and to your grandsons,

4:10  the day that thou stoodest before YHWH thy God in Horeb, when the YHWH said unto me: 'Assemble Me the people, and I will make them hear My words that they may learn to fear Me all the days that they live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.'

10  even the things that happened in the day in which ye stood before the Lord our God in Choreb in the day of the assembly; for the Lord said to me, Gather the people to me, and let them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days which they live upon the earth, and they shall teach their sons.

4:11  And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the heart of heaven, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness.

11  And you approached the base of the mountain, which was burning even toward heaven. And there was a darkness upon it, and a cloud, and a mist.

4:12  And YHWH spoke unto you out of the midst of the fire; ye heard the voice of words, but ye saw no form; only a voice.

12  And the Lord spoke to you out of the midst of the fire a voice of words, which ye heard: and ye saw no likeness, only ye heard a voice.

4:13  And He declared unto you His covenant, which He commanded you to perform, even the ten words; and He wrote them upon two tables of stone.

4:14  And YHWH commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.

14  And the Lord commanded me at that time, to teach you ordinances and judgements, that ye should do them on the land, into which ye go to inherit it.

4:15  Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves--for ye saw no manner of form on the day that YHWH spoke unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire--

15  And take good heed to your hearts, for ye saw no similitude in the day in which the Lord spoke to you in Choreb in the mountain out of the midst of the fire

15  And so, guard your souls carefully. You saw no likeness on the day that the Lord God spoke to you on Horeb from the midst of fire.

4:16  lest ye deal corruptly, and make you a graven image, even the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female,

16  Otherwise, perhaps being deceived, you might have made a graven image, or an image of male or female,

4:17  the likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the heaven,

17  a likeness of any of the beasts, which are upon the earth, or of birds, which fly under heaven,

4:18  the likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth;

18  or of reptiles, which move across the earth, or of fish, which abide in the waters under the earth.

4:19  and lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the host of heaven, thou be drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which YHWH thy God hath allotted unto all the peoples under the whole heaven.

4:20  But you hath YHWH taken and brought forth out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be unto Him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.

20  But God took you, and led you forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be to him a people of inheritance, as at this day.

20  But the Lord has taken you up, and led you away from the iron furnaces of Egypt, in order to have a people of inheritance, just as it is to the present day.

4:21  Now YHWH was angered with me for your sakes, and swore that I should not go over the Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good land, which the YHWH thy God giveth thee for an inheritance;

21  And the Lord became angry against me because of your words, and he swore that I would not cross over the Jordan, nor enter into the excellent land, which he will give to you.

4:22  but I must die in this land, I must not go over the Jordan; but ye are to go over, and possess that good land.

22  For I am to die in this land, and shall not pass over this Jordan; but ye are to pass over, and shall inherit this good land.

22  Behold, I shall die on this soil. I shall not cross over the Jordan. You shall cross it, and you shall possess the singular land.

4:23  Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of YHWH your God, which He made with you, and make you a graven image, even the likeness of any thing which the YHWH thy God hath forbidden thee.

23  Take heed to yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the Lord our God, which he made with you, and ye transgress, and make to yourselves a graven image of any of the things concerning which the Lord thy God commanded thee.

23  Be careful, lest you at sometime forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he has formed with you, and lest you make for yourselves a graven likeness of those things which the Lord has prohibited to be made.

4:24  For YHWH thy God is a devouring fire, a jealous God.

24  For the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

4:25  When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye shall have been long in the land, and shall deal corruptly, and make a graven image, even the form of any thing, and shall do that which is evil in the sight of YHWH thy God, to provoke Him;

25  And when thou shalt have begotten sons, and shalt have sons’ sons, and ye shall have dwelt a long time on the land, and shall have transgressed, and made a graven image of any thing, and shall have done wickedly before the Lord your God to provoke him;

25  When you will have conceived sons and grandsons while abiding in the land, and if, having been deceived, you make for yourselves any likeness, accomplishing evil in the sight of the Lord your God, so as to provoke him to wrath,

4:26  I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over the Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.

4:27  And YHWH shall scatter you among the peoples, and ye shall be left few in number among the nations, whither the YHWH shall lead you away.

27  And the Lord shall scatter you among all nations, and ye shall be left few in number among all the nations, among which the Lord shall bring you.

27  And he will scatter you among all the nations, and few of you will remain among those nations, to which the Lord will lead you.

4:28  And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.

4:29  But from thence ye will seek YHWH thy God; and thou shalt find Him, if thou search after Him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

29  And there ye shall seek the Lord your God, and ye shall find him whenever ye shall seek him with all your heart, and with all your soul in.

4:30  In thy distress, when all these things are come upon thee, in the end of days, thou wilt return to YHWH thy God, and hearken unto His voice;

4:31  for YHWH thy God is a merciful God; He will not fail thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which He swore unto them.

31  Because the Lord thy God is a God of pity: he will not forsake thee, nor destroy thee; he will not forget the covenant of thy fathers, which the Lord sware to them.

31  For the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not abandon you, nor will he entirely destroy you, nor will he forget the covenant, which he swore to your fathers.

4:32  For ask now of the days past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and from the one end of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?

32  Ask of the former days which were before thee, from the day when God created man upon the earth, and beginning at the one end of heaven to the other end of heaven, if there has happened any thing like to this great event, if such a thing has been heard

32  Inquire concerning the days of antiquity, which were before you, from the day when God created man upon the earth, from one end of heaven to another, if anything similar has ever occurred, or whether any such thing has ever been known,

4:33  Did ever a people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live?

33  if a nation have heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard and hast lived;

4:34  Or hath God assayed to go and take Him a nation from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that YHWH your God did for you in Egypt before thine eyes?

34  if God has assayed to go and take to himself a nation out of the midst of another nation with trial, and with signs, and with wonders, and with war, and with a mighty hand, and with a high arm, and with great sights, according to all the things which the Lord our God did in Egypt in thy sight.

34  whether God has acted so as to enter and take for himself a nation from the midst of the nations, by means of tests, signs, and wonders, by means of fighting, and a strong hand, and an outstretched arm, and terrible visions, in accord with all the things which the Lord your God has accomplished for you in Egypt, in the sight of your eyes.

4:35  Unto thee it was shown, that thou mightiest know that YHWH, He is God; there is none else beside Him.

35  So that thou shouldest know that the Lord thy God he is God, and there is none beside him.

35  You saw and knew that the LORD is God; there is none else besides him.

4:36  Out of heaven He made thee to hear His voice, that He might instruct thee; and upon earth He made thee to see His great fire; and thou didst hear His words out of the midst of the fire.

36  His voice was made audible from heaven to instruct thee, and he shewed thee upon the earth his great fire, and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire.

36  He has caused you to hear his voice from heaven, so that he might teach you. And he showed you his exceedingly great fire on earth, and you heard his words from the midst of the fire.

4:37  And because He loved thy fathers, and chose their seed after them, and brought thee out with His presence, with His great power, out of Egypt,

37  Because he loved thy fathers, he also chose you their seed after them, and he brought thee himself with his great strength out of Egypt,

37  For he loved your fathers, and he chose their offspring after them. And he led you away from Egypt, advancing before you with his great power,

4:38  to drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as it is this day;

38  to destroy nations great and stronger than thou before thy face, to bring thee in, to give thee their land to inherit, as thou hast it this day.

38  so as to wipe away, upon your arrival, nations, very great and stronger than you, and so as to lead you in, and to present to you their land as a possession, just as you discern in the present day.

4:39  know this day, and lay it to thy heart, that YHWH, He is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath; there is none else.

39  And thou shalt know this day, and shalt consider in thine heart, that the Lord thy God he is God in heaven above, and on the earth beneath, and there is none else but he.

4:40  And thou shalt keep His statutes, and His commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the land, which YHWH thy God giveth thee, for ever.

40  Keep his precepts and commandments, which I am teaching to you, so that it may be well with you, and with your sons after you, and so that you may remain for a long time upon the land, which the Lord your God will give to you.”

4:41  Then Moses separated three cities beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising;

4:42  that the manslayer might flee thither, that slayeth his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in time past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live

42  that the slayer might flee thither, who should have slain his neighbour unintentionally, and should not have hated him in times past, and he shall flee to one of these cities and live

42  so that anyone might flee to these if he has killed his neighbor unwillingly, who was not his enemy a day or two earlier, and so that he would be able to escape to one of these cities

4:43  Bezer in the wilderness, in the table-land, for the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.

43  Bosor in the wilderness, in the plain country of Ruben, and Ramoth in Galaad belonging to Gad, and Gaulon in Basan belonging to Manasse.

4:44  And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel;

44  This is the law, which Moses set forth before the sons of Israel.

4:45  these are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which Moses spoke unto the children of Israel, when they came forth out of Egypt;

45  And these are the testimonies and ceremonies as well as judgments, which he spoke to the sons of Israel, when they departed from Egypt,

4:46  beyond the Jordan, in the valley over against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel smote, when they came forth out of Egypt;

46  on the other side of Jordan, in the valley near the house of Phogor, in the land of Seon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Esebon, whom Moses and the sons of Israel smote when they came out of the land of Egypt.

46  across the Jordan, in the valley opposite the shrine of Peor, in the land of Sihon, the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses struck down. Accordingly, the sons of Israel, having departed from Egypt,

4:47  and they took his land in possession, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising;

47  And they inherited his land, and the land of Og king of Basan, two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond Jordan eastward.

4:48  from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of Arnon, even unto mount Sion--the same is Hermon--

48  from Aroer, which is situated above the bank of the torrent Arnon, as far as Mount Zion, which is also called Hermon,

48  From Adoer, which is on the edge of the river Arnon, as far as mount Serion, which is Hermon,

4:49  and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.

49  All Araba beyond Jordan eastward under Asedoth hewn in the rock.

49  the entire plain across the Jordan, from its eastern region, as far as the sea of the wilderness, and even to the base of Mount Pisgah.

5:1  And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them: Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and observe to do them.

5:2  YHWH our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.

2  The Lord your God made a covenant with you in Choreb.

5:3  YHWH made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.

3  The Lord did not make this covenant with your fathers, but with you: ye are all here alive this day.

3  It was not with our fathers that the LORD made this covenant, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.

5:4  YHWH spoke with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire--

4  The Lord spoke to you face to face in the mountain out of the midst of the fire.

4  He spoke to us face to face on the mountain, from the midst of fire.

5:5  I stood between YHWH and you at that time, to declare unto you the word of the YHWH; for ye were afraid because of the fire, and went not up into the mount--saying

5  I was the mediator, for I was in the middle between the Lord and you, at that time, to announce his words to you. For you were afraid of the fire, and so you did not ascend to the mountain. And he said

5:6  I am YHWH thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

6  ‘I am the Lord your God, who led you away from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude.

5:7  Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.

7  You shall not have strange gods in my sight.

5:8  Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, even any manner of likeness, of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

8  You shall not make for yourself a graven image, nor the likeness of anything, which is in heaven above, or on earth below, or which abides in the waters under the earth.

5:9  Thou shalt not bow down unto them, nor serve them; for I YHWH thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate Me,

9  You shall not adore and you shall not worship these things. For I am the Lord your God, a jealous God, repaying the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and fourth generation to those who hate me,

5:10  and showing mercy unto the thousandth generation of them that love Me and keep My commandments.

10  and acting with mercy in thousands of ways to those who love me and keep my precepts.

5:11  Thou shalt not take the name of YHWH thy God in vain; for the YHWH will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.

11  You shall not use the name of the Lord your God in vain. For he will not go unpunished who takes up his name over an unimportant matter.

11  You shall not take an oath by the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes an oath by his name in vain.

5:12  Observe the sabbath day, to keep it holy, as YHWH thy God commanded thee.

12  Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God commanded thee.

12  Observe the day of the Sabbath, so that you may sanctify it, just as the Lord your God has instructed you.

5:13  Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work;

13  For six days, you shall labor and do all your work.

5:14  but the seventh day is a sabbath unto YHWH thy God, in it thou shalt not do any manner of work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy man-servant and thy maid-servant may rest as well as thou.

14  The seventh is the day of the Sabbath, that is, the rest of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work in it, nor shall your son, nor daughter, nor man servant, nor woman servant, nor ox, nor donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor the sojourner who is within your gates, so that your men and woman servants may rest, just as you do.

14  But the seventh day is the sabbath to the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your ox, nor your ass, nor any of your cattle, nor the sojourner that is in your towns; that your manservant and your maidservant may rest as well as you.

5:15  And thou shalt remember that thou was a servant in the land of Egypt, and YHWH thy God brought thee out thence by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the YHWH thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

15  Remember that you also were servants in Egypt, and the Lord your God led you away from that place with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. Because of this, he has instructed you so that you would observe the Sabbath day.

5:16  Honour thy father and thy mother, as YHWH thy God commanded thee; that thy days may be long, and that it may go well with thee, upon the land which the YHWH thy God giveth thee.

16  Honor your father and mother, just as the Lord your God has instructed you, so that you may live a long time, and so that it may be well with you in the land, which the Lord your God will give to you.

5:17  Thou shalt not murder.

17  You shall not kill.

5:18  Neither shalt thou commit adultery.

18  And you shall not commit adultery.

5:19  Neither shalt thou steal.

19  And you shall not commit theft.

19  You shall not steal.

5:20  Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.

20  You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

5:21  Neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's wife; neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's house, his field, or his man- servant, or his maid-servant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.

21  Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife; thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, nor his field, nor his man-servant, nor his maid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any beast of his, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

21  Thou shalt not desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's. And when it so happens that LORD God brings you to the land of Caanan, which you are coming to posses, you shall set-up there for you great stones and plaster them with plaster and you write on the stones all words of this law. And it becomes for you that across the Jordan you shall raise these stones, which I command you today, in mountain Grizim. And you build there the altar to the LORD God of you. Altar of stones. Not you shall wave on them iron. With whole stones you shall build the altar to LORD God of you. And you bring on it ascend offerings to LORD God of you, and you sacrifice peace offerings, and you eat there and you rejoice before the face of the LORD God of you. The mountain this is across the Jordan behind the way of the rising of the sun, in the land of Caanan who is dwelling in the desert before the Galgal, beside Alvin-Mara, before Sechem.

5:22  These words YHWH spoke unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice, and it went on no more. And He wrote them upon two tables of stone, and gave them unto me.

22  These words the Lord spoke to all the assembly of you in the mountain out of the midst of the fire— there was darkness, blackness, storm, a loud voice—and he added no more, and he wrote them on two tables of stone, and he gave them to me.

22  The Lord spoke these words to the entire multitude of you on the mountain, from the midst of the fire and the cloud and the darkness, with a loud voice, adding nothing more. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone, which he delivered to me.

5:23  And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain did burn with fire, that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;

23  Then, after you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, and you saw the mountain burning, you approached me, all you leaders of the tribes and those greater by birth. And you said

5:24  and ye said: 'Behold, YHWH our God hath shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice out of the midst of the fire; we have seen this day that God doth speak with man, and he liveth.

24  ‘Behold, the Lord our God has revealed to us his majesty and his greatness. We have heard his voice from the midst of fire, and we have proven today that, though God is speaking with man, man has lived.

5:25  Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of YHWH our God any more, then we shall die.

25  And now let us not die, for this great fire will consume us, if we shall hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, and we shall die.

25  Therefore, why should we die, and why should this very great fire devour us? For if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer, we will die.

5:26  For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?

26  What is all flesh, that it would hear the voice of the living God, who speaks from the midst of fire, just as we have heard it, and be able to live?

5:27  Go thou near, and hear all that YHWH our God may say; and thou shalt speak unto us all that the YHWH our God may speak unto thee; and we will hear it and do it.'

27  Do thou draw near, and hear all that the Lord our God shall say, and thou shalt speak to us all things whatsoever the Lord our God shall speak to thee, and we will hear, and do.

27  Instead, you should approach and listen to all the things that the Lord our God will say to you. And you will speak to us, and we will listen and do these things.’

5:28  And YHWH heard the voice of your words, when ye spoke unto me; and the YHWH said unto me: 'I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee; they have well said all that they have spoken.

28  And the Lord heard the voice of your words as ye spoke to me; and the Lord said to me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, even all things that they have said to thee. They have well said all that they have spoken.

28  But when the Lord had heard this, he said to me: ‘I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they spoke to you. All this, they have spoken well.

5:29  Oh that they had such a heart as this alway, to fear Me, and keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!

29  O that there were such a heart in them, that they should fear me and keep my commands always, that it might be well with them and with their sons for ever.

29  Who will grant to them to have such a mind, so that they may fear me, and may keep all my commandments at all times, so that it may be well with them and with their sons forever?

5:30  Go say to them: Return ye to your tents.

5:31  But as for thee, stand thou here by Me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.'

31  but stand thou here with me, and I will tell thee all the commands, and the ordinances, and the judgements, which thou shalt teach them, and let them do so in the land which I give them for an inheritance.

31  But as for you, stand here with me, and I will speak to you all my commandments and ceremonies, as well as judgments. These, you shall teach them, so that they may do them in the land, which I will give to them as a possession.

5:32  Ye shall observe to do therefore as YHWH your God hath commanded you; ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

32  And ye shall take heed to do as the Lord thy God commanded thee; ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left,

5:33  Ye shall walk in all the way which YHWH your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.

33  according to all the way which the Lord thy God commanded thee to walk in it, that he may give thee rest; and that it may be well with thee, and ye may prolong your days on the land which ye shall inherit.

33  For you shall walk in the way that the Lord your God has instructed, so that you may live, and it may be well with you, and your days may be extended in the land of your possession.’ ”

6:1  Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the ordinances, which YHWH your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it--

1  And these are the commands, and the ordinances, and the judgements, as many as the Lord our God gave commandment to teach you to do so in the land on which ye enter to inherit it.

1  “These are the precepts and ceremonies, as well as the judgments, which the Lord your God has commanded that I teach to you, which you shall do in the land to which you will travel in order to possess it.

6:2  that thou mightest fear YHWH thy God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

2  So may you fear the Lord your God, and keep all his commandments and precepts, which I am entrusting to you, and to your sons and grandsons, all the days of your life, so that your days may be prolonged.

6:3  Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as YHWH, the God of thy fathers, hath promised unto thee--a land flowing with milk and honey.

3  Hear, therefore, O Israel, and observe to do them, that it may be well with thee, and that ye may be greatly multiplied, as the Lord God of thy fathers said that he would give thee a land flowing with milk and honey: and these are the ordinances, and the judgements, which the Lord commanded the children of Israel in the wilderness, when they had gone forth from the land of Egypt.

3  Listen and observe, O Israel, so that you may do just as the Lord has instructed you, and it may be well with you, and you may be multiplied all the more, for the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you a land flowing with milk and honey.

6:4  HEAR, O ISRAEL: YHWH OUR GOD, THE YHWH IS ONE.

4  Listen, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord.

6:5  And thou shalt love YHWH thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

5  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.

5  And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

6:6  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart;

6:7  and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

7  And you shall explain them to your sons. And you shall meditate upon them sitting in your house, and walking on a journey, when lying down and when rising up.

6:8  And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes.

8  And you shall bind them like a sign on your hand, and they shall be placed and shall move between your eyes.

6:9  And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates.

9  And ye shall write them on the lintels of your houses and of your gates.

6:10  And it shall be, when YHWH thy God shall bring thee into the land which He swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee--great and goodly cities, which thou didst not build,

10  And when the Lord your God will have led you into the land, about which he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and when he will have given to you great and excellent cities, which you did not build;

6:11  and houses full of all good things, which thou didst not fill, and cisterns hewn out, which thou the didst not hew, vineyards and olive-trees, which thou didst not plant, and thou shalt eat and be satisfied--

11  houses full of all good things which thou didst not fill, wells dug in the rock which thou didst not dig, vineyards and oliveyards which thou didst not plant, then having eaten and been filled,

11  houses full of goods, which you did not amass; cisterns, which you did not dig; vineyards and olive groves, which you did not plant;

6:12  then beware lest thou forget YHWH, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

12  and when you will have eaten and been satisfied

6:13  Thou shalt fear YHWH thy God; and Him shalt thou serve, and by His name shalt thou swear.

13  take care diligently, lest you forget the Lord, who led you away from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude. You shall fear the Lord your God, and you shall serve him alone, and you shall swear by his name.

13  You shall reverence the LORD your God, and serve him, and shall swear by his name.

6:14  Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the peoples that are round about you;

14  Go ye not after other gods of the gods of the nations round about you;

14  You shall not go after the strange gods of all the Gentiles, who are around you.

6:15  for a jealous God, even YHWH thy God, is in the midst of thee; lest the anger of the YHWH thy God be kindled against thee, and He destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

15  For the Lord your God is a jealous God in your midst. Otherwise, at sometime, the fury of the Lord your God may be enraged against you, and he may take you away from the face of the earth.

15  (For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

6:16  Ye shall not try YHWH your God, as ye tried Him in Massah.

16  Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God, as ye tempted him in the temptation.

16  You shall not tempt the Lord your God, as you tempted him in the place of temptation.

6:17  Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of YHWH your God, and His testimonies, and His statutes, which He hath commanded thee.

17  Keep the precepts of the Lord your God, as well as the testimonies and ceremonies, which he has instructed to you.

6:18  And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of YHWH; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the YHWH swore unto thy fathers,

18  And do what is pleasing and good in the sight of the Lord, so that it may be well with you, and so that, when you enter, you may possess the excellent land, about which the Lord swore to your fathers

18  And you shall de that which is good and right in the sight of the LORD; that it may be well with you, and that you may go in and possess the good land which the LORD swore to your fathers,

6:19  to thrust out all thine enemies from before thee, as YHWH hath spoken.

6:20  When thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying: 'What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which YHWH our God hath commanded you?

20  And it shall come to pass when thy son shall ask thee at a future time, saying, What are the testimonies, and the ordinances, and the judgements, which the Lord our God has commanded us?

20  And when your son will ask you tomorrow, saying: ‘What do these testimonies and ceremonies and judgments mean, which the Lord our God has entrusted to us?’

6:21  then thou shalt say unto thy son: 'We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and YHWH brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

21  Then shalt thou say to thy son, We were slaves to Pharao in the land of Egypt, and the Lord brought us forth thence with a mighty hand, and with a high arm.

21  You shall say to him: ‘We were servants of Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Lord led us away from Egypt with a strong hand.

6:22  And YHWH showed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his house, before our eyes.

22  And the Lord wrought signs and great and grievous wonders in Egypt, on Pharao and on his house before us.

22  And he wrought signs and wonders, great and very grievous, in Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his house, in our sight.

6:23  And He brought us out from thence, that He might bring us in, to give us the land which He swore unto our fathers.

23  And he led us away from that place, so that he might lead us in and give us the land, about which he swore to our fathers.

6:24  And YHWH commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the YHWH our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.

24  And the Lord charged us to observe all these ordinances; to fear the Lord our God, that it may be well with us for ever, that we may live, as even to-day.

24  And the Lord instructed us that we should do all these ordinances, and that we should fear the Lord our God, so that it may be well with us all the days of our life, just as it is today.

6:25  And it shall be righteousness unto us, if we observe to do all this commandment before YHWH our God, as He hath commanded us.'

25  And there shall be mercy to us, if we take heed to keep all these commands before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.

25  And he will be merciful to us, if we keep and perform all his precepts, in the sight of the Lord our God, just as he has commanded us.’ ”

7:1  When YHWH thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and shall cast out many nations before thee, the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

1  “When the Lord your God will have led you to the land, which you will enter so as to possess it, and when he will have destroyed many nations before you, the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations much more numerous than you, and more robust than you,

7:2  and when YHWH thy God shall deliver them up before thee, and thou shalt smite them; then thou shalt utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them;

2  and when the Lord your God will have delivered them to you, you shall strike them down unto utter annihilation. You shall not enter into a pact with them, nor shall you show any pity to them.

7:3  neither shalt thou make marriages with them: thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

3  And you shall not associate with them in marriage. You shall not give your daughter to his son, nor accept his daughter for your son.

3  Neither shall you make marriages with them; you shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons,

7:4  For he will turn away thy son from following Me, that they may serve other gods; so will the anger of YHWH be kindled against you, and He will destroy thee quickly.

4  For she will seduce your son, so that he will not follow me, and so that he will instead serve foreign gods. And the fury of the Lord will be enraged, and he will quickly destroy you.

4  That they may not turn away your sons from following me, and serve other gods; and then the anger of the LORD would kindle against you and destroy you quickly.

7:5  But thus shall ye deal with them: ye shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire.

5  But thus shall ye do to them; ye shall destroy their altars, and shall break down their pillars, and shall cut down their groves, and shall burn with fire the graven images of their gods.

5  So instead, you shall do this to them: overturn their altars, and break their statues, and cut down their sacred groves, and burn up their graven images.

7:6  For thou art a holy people unto YHWH thy God: the YHWH thy God hath chosen thee to be His own treasure, out of all peoples that are upon the face of the earth.

6  For you are a holy people to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you so that you would be his particular people out of all the peoples who are upon the earth.

6  For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: and the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.

7:7  YHWH did not set His love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people--for ye were the fewest of all peoples--

7  It was not because ye are more numerous than all other nations that the Lord preferred you, and the Lord made choice of you: for ye are fewer in number than all other nations.

7  It is not because you surpass all the nations in number that the Lord has joined with you and has chosen you, for you are the least numerous of any people.

7:8  but because YHWH loved you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore unto your fathers, hath the YHWH brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

8  But it is because the Lord has loved you, and has kept his oath, which he swore to your fathers. And he has led you away with a strong hand, and he has redeemed you from the house of servitude, from the hand of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.

8  But it was because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oaths which he had sworn to your fathers, that the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and delivered you out of the house of bondage from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt,

7:9  Know therefore that YHWH thy God, He is God; the faithful God, who keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations;

9  Thou shalt know therefore, that the Lord thy God, he is God, a faithful God, who keeps covenant and mercy for them that love him, and for those that keep his commandments to a thousand generations,

9  And you shall know that the Lord your God himself is a strong and faithful God, preserving his covenant and his mercy for those who love him and those who keep his precepts for a thousand generations,

7:10  and repayeth them that hate Him to their face, to destroy them; He will not be slack to him that hateth Him, He will repay him to his face.

10  and promptly repaying those who hate him, so as to utterly ruin them, without further delay, quickly rendering to them what they deserve.

10  And repays those that hate him during their lifetime; he requites them that he may destroy them; he shall not be slack to those that hate him, but he repays them during their lifetime.

7:11  Thou shalt therefore keep the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command thee this day, to do them.

11  Therefore, keep the precepts and ceremonies as well as the judgments, which I command to you this day, so that you may do them.

11  You shall therefore keep the commandments and the statutes and the judgments which I command you this day, and do them.

7:12  And it shall come to pass, because ye hearken to these ordinances, and keep, and do them, that YHWH thy God shall keep with thee the covenant and the mercy which He swore unto thy fathers,

12  If, after you have heard these judgments, you keep and do them, the Lord your God will also keep his covenant with you and the mercy that he swore to your fathers.

12  Wherefore if you hearken to these judgments, and keep them and do them, the LORD your God shall keep with you the covenant and the mercy which he swore to your fathers;

7:13  and He will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee; He will also bless the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy land, thy corn and thy wine and thine oil, the increase of thy kine and the young of thy flock, in the land which He swore unto thy fathers to give thee.

13  And he will love you and multiply you. And he will bless the fruit of your womb, and the fruit of your land: your grain as well as your vintage, oil, and herds, and the flocks of your sheep, upon the land about which he swore to your fathers that he would give it to you.

7:14  Thou shalt be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.

14  Blessed shall you be among all peoples. No one will be barren among you of either gender, as much among men as among your herds.

7:15  And YHWH will take away from thee all sickness; and He will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee, but will lay them upon all them that hate thee.

15  And the Lord thy God shall remove from thee all sickness; and none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou hast seen, and all that thou hast known, will he lay upon thee; but he will lay them upon all that hate thee.

15  The Lord will take all sickness away from you. And the very grievous infirmities of Egypt, which you have known, he will not bring upon you, but upon your enemies.

7:16  And thou shalt consume all the peoples that YHWH thy God shall deliver unto thee; thine eye shall not pity them; neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.

16  You shall devour all the peoples, which the Lord your God will deliver to you. Your eye shall not spare them, neither shall you serve their gods, lest they be your ruin.

16  And you shall consume all the peoples that the LORD your God shall deliver to you; your eye shall have no pity upon them; neither shall you serve their gods; for they are a snare to you.

7:17  If thou shalt say in thy heart: 'These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?'

17  But if thou shouldest say in thine heart, This nation is greater than I, how shall I be able to destroy them utterly?

17  If you say in your heart, ‘These nations are more than I am, so how will I be able to destroy them?’

7:18  thou shalt not be afraid of them; thou shalt well remember what YHWH thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt

18  do not be apprehensive. Instead, recall what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all the Egyptians

18  You shall not be afraid of them; but you shall remember what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt;

7:19  the great trials which thine eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, whereby YHWH thy God brought thee out; so shall the YHWH thy God do unto all the peoples of whom thou art afraid.

19  the great temptations which thine eyes have seen, those signs and great wonders, the strong hand, and the high arm; how the Lord thy God brought thee forth: so the Lord your God will do to all the nations, whom thou fearest in their presence.

19  the very great plagues, which your eyes saw, and the signs and wonders, and the powerful hand and outstretched arm, by which the Lord your God led you away. So will he do to all the peoples, whom you dread.

7:20  Moreover YHWH thy God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and they that hide themselves, perish from before thee.

20  And the Lord thy God shall send against them the hornets, until they that are left and they that are hidden from thee be utterly destroyed.

20  Moreover, the Lord your God will also send hornets among them, until he destroys and scatters all who have escaped from you, or who have been able to hide.

7:21  Thou shalt not be affrighted at them; for YHWH thy God is in the midst of thee, a God great and awful.

21  You shall not fear them, for the Lord your God is in your midst: a great and terrible God.

7:22  And YHWH thy God will cast out those nations before thee by little and little; thou mayest not consume them quickly, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.

22  And the Lord thy God shall consume these nations before thee by little and little: thou shalt not be able to consume them speedily, lest the land become desert, and the wild beasts of the field be multiplied against thee.

7:23  But YHWH thy God shall deliver them up before thee, and shall discomfit them with a great discomfiture, until they be destroyed.

23  And the Lord thy God shall deliver them into thy hands, and thou shalt destroy them with a great destruction, until ye shall have utterly destroyed them.

23  And so, the Lord your God will present them in your sight, and you shall slay them until they are thoroughly wiped away.

7:24  And He shall deliver their kings into thy hand, and thou shalt make their name to perish from under heaven; there shall no man be able to stand against thee, until thou have destroyed them.

7:25  The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire; thou shalt not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein; for it is an abomination to YHWH thy God.

25  Their graven images, you shall burn with fire. You shall not covet the silver or gold from which they have been made. And you shall not take for yourself anything from these, lest you offend, because this is an abomination to the Lord your God.

7:26  And thou shalt not bring an abomination into thy house, and be accursed like unto it; thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a devoted thing.

26  Neither shall you carry anything of the idol into your house, lest you become accursed, just as it also is. You shall detest it like dung, and you shall abominate it like defilement and filth, because it is an accursed thing.”

26  Neither shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be a cursed thing like it; but you shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.

8:1  All the commandment which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which YHWH swore unto your fathers.

1  Ye shall observe to do all the commands which I charge you to-day, that ye may live and be multiplied, and enter in and inherit the land, which the Lord your God sware to give to your fathers.

1  “All the commandments which I am entrusting to you this day, take care to observe them diligently, so that you may live and be multiplied, and so that, upon entering, you may possess the land, about which the Lord swore to your fathers.

8:2  And thou shalt remember all the way which YHWH thy God hath led thee these forty years in the wilderness, that He might afflict thee, to prove thee, to know what was in thy heart, whether thou wouldest keep His commandments, or no.

2  And you shall remember the entire journey along which the Lord your God led you, for forty years through the desert, to afflict you, and to test you, and to make known the things that were turning in your soul, whether or not you would keep his commandments.

8:3  And He afflicted thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that He might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every thing that proceedeth out of the mouth of YHWH doth man live.

3  He afflicted you with need, and he gave you Manna as your food, which neither you nor your fathers knew, so as to reveal to you that it is not by bread alone that man lives, but by every word that goes forth from the mouth of God.

3  And he humbled you and suffered you to hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, neither did your fathers know; that he might make you to understand that man does not live by bread alone; but by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD does man live.

8:4  Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.

4  Thy garments grew not old from off thee, thy shoes were not worn from off thee, thy feet were not painfully hardened, lo! these forty years.

8:5  And thou shalt consider in thy heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so YHWH thy God chasteneth thee.

5  so that you would recognize in your heart that, just as a man educates his son, so has the Lord your God educated you.

5  You must know in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.

8:6  And thou shalt keep the commandments of YHWH thy God, to walk in His ways, and to fear Him.

6  So may you keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and walk in his ways, and fear him.

6  Therefore you must keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in his ways and fear him.

8:7  For YHWH thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths, springing forth in valleys and hills;

7  For the Lord thy God will bring thee into a good and extensive land, where there are torrents of waters, and fountains of deep places issuing through the plains and through the mountains

7  For the Lord your God will lead you into a good land: a land of brooks and waters and fountains, in which deep rivers burst forth from its plains and mountains,

8:8  a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey;

8  a land of crops, barley, and vineyards, in which fig and pomegranate and olive trees spring up, a land of oil and honey.

8:9  a land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.

9  a land on which thou shalt not eat thy bread with poverty, and thou shalt not want any thing upon it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of its mountains thou shalt dig brass.

9  In that place, without any need, you shall eat your bread and enjoy an abundance of all things: where the stones are like iron, and where ore for brass is dug out of its mountains.

8:10  And thou shalt eat and be satisfied, and bless YHWH thy God for the good land which He hath given thee.

10  So then, when you have eaten and been satisfied, you should bless the Lord your God for the excellent land which he has given to you.

8:11  Beware lest thou forget YHWH thy God, in not keeping His commandments, and His ordinances, and His statutes, which I command thee this day;

11  Be observant and cautious, lest at sometime you may forget the Lord your God, and neglect his commandments, as well as the judgments and ceremonies, which I instruct to you this day.

8:12  lest when thou hast eaten and art satisfied, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;

12  Otherwise, after you have eaten and been satisfied, and have built beautiful houses and have lived in them,

12  Lest when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses, and dwell in them;

8:13  and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;

13  and have obtained herds of oxen, and flocks of sheep, and a plentitude of gold and silver and all things,

8:14  then thy heart be lifted up, and thou forget YHWH thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage;

14  thou shouldest be exalted in heart, and forget the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage

14  your heart might be lifted up, and you might not remember the Lord your God, who led you away from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude,

8:15  who led thee through the great and dreadful wilderness, wherein were serpents, fiery serpents, and scorpions, and thirsty ground where was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;

15  and who was your leader in the great and terrible wilderness, in which there was the serpent with a burning breath, and the scorpion, and the snake of thirst, and no waters at all. He led streams out of the hardest rock,

8:16  who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that He might afflict thee, and that He might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

16  and he nourished you in the wilderness with Manna, which your fathers had not known. And after he had afflicted and tested you, in the very end, he took pity on you.

16  Who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that he might humble you, and that he might prove you, to do you good at the end;

8:17  and thou say in thy heart: 'My power and the might of my hand hath gotten me this wealth.'

17  Lest thou shouldest say in thine heart, My strength, and the power of mine hand have wrought for me this great wealth.

17  Otherwise, you might say in your heart: ‘My own strength, and the power of my own hand, have brought forth all these things for me.’

8:18  But thou shalt remember YHWH thy God, for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

18  But remember the Lord your God, that he himself has provided you with strength, so that he may fulfill his covenant, about which he swore to your fathers, just as the present day reveals.

18  But you shall remember the LORD your God; for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

8:19  And it shall be, if thou shalt forget YHWH thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I forewarn you this day that ye shall surely perish.

19  And it shall come to pass if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and shouldest go after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall surely perish.

19  But if you forget the Lord your God, so that you follow foreign gods, and serve and adore them: behold, I now foretell to you that you shall utterly perish.

8:20  As the nations that YHWH maketh to perish before you, so shall ye perish; because ye would not hearken unto the voice of the YHWH your God.

20  As also the other nations which the Lord God destroys before your face, so shall ye perish, because ye hearkened not to the voice of the Lord your God.
