If one be found slain in the land which YHWH thy God giveth thee to possess it, lying in the field, and it be not known who hath smitten him;

“When there will have been found in the land, which the Lord your God will give to you, the corpse of a man who has been killed, and it is not known who is guilty of the murder,

then thy elders and thy judges shall come forth, and they shall measure unto the cities which are round about him that is slain.

thine elders and thy judges shall come forth, and shall measure the distances of the cities round about the slain man

your judges and those greater by birth shall go out and measure, from the place of the corpse, the distance to each of the surrounding cities.

And it shall be, that the city which is nearest unto the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take a heifer of the herd, which hath not been wrought with, and which hath not drawn in the yoke.

And in whichever one they perceive to be closer than the others, the elders shall take a calf from the herd, one which has not pulled with a yoke, nor tilled with a plow.

And the elders of the city which is nearest to the slain man shall take a heifer which has never been used for work nor has pulled in the yoke,

And the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer unto a rough valley, which may neither be plowed nor sown, and shall break the heifer's neck there in the valley.

And they shall lead it into a rough and stony valley, one which has never been tilled or sown. And in that place, they shall cut the neck of the calf.

And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near--for them YHWH thy God hath chosen to minister unto Him, and to bless in the name of the YHWH; and according to their word shall every controversy and every stroke be.

And the priests the Levites shall come, because the Lord God has chosen them to stand by him, and to bless in his name, and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be decided.

And all the elders of that city, who are nearest unto the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley.

And those greater by birth of that city, nearest to the one who was slain, shall go and shall wash their hands over the calf that was killed in the valley.

And they shall speak and say: 'Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it.

Forgive, O YHWH, Thy people Israel, whom Thou hast redeemed, and suffer not innocent blood to remain in the midst of Thy people Israel.' And the blood shall be forgiven them.

Be merciful to your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, O Lord, and do not charge them with innocent blood in the midst of your people Israel.’ And so the guilt of the blood will be taken away from them.

Pardon, O LORD, thy people Israel, whom thou hast saved, and lay not innocent blood upon thy people Israel. And the guilt of blood shall be forgiven them.

So shalt thou put away the innocent blood from the midst of thee, when thou shalt do that which is right in the eyes of YHWH.

And thou shalt take away innocent blood from among you, if thou shouldest do that which is good and pleasing before the Lord thy God.

Then you will be free from the blood that was shed against the innocent, when you will have done as the Lord has instructed you.

10  When thou goest forth to battle against thine enemies, and YHWH thy God delivereth them into thy hands, and thou carriest them away captive,

12  then you shall lead her into your house. And she shall shave off her hair, and cut her nails short,

13  and she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thy house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month; and after that thou mayest go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife.

13  and remove the garment in which she was captured. And she shall sit in your house and weep for her father and mother, for one month. And after that, you shall enter to her and sleep with her, and she shall be your wife.

14  And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not deal with her as a slave, because thou hast humbled her.

14  But if afterwards she does not sit well in your mind, you shall set her free. You cannot sell her for money, nor can you oppress her by force. For you have humiliated her.

15  If a man have two wives, the one beloved, and the other hated, and they have borne him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the first-born son be hers that was hated;

15  And if a man have two wives, the one loved and the other hated, and both the loved and the hated should have born him children, and the son of the hated should be first-born;

16  then it shall be, in the day that he causeth his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved the first-born before the son of the hated, who is the first-born;

16  and if he wishes to divide his substance among his sons: he cannot make the son of the beloved wife the firstborn, and so prefer him before the son of the hated wife.

17  but he shall acknowledge the first-born, the son of the hated, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath; for he is the first-fruits of his strength, the right of the first-born is his.

17  Instead, he shall acknowledge the son of the hated wife as the firstborn, and he shall give to him a double portion of all that he has. For he is the first among his children, and the rights of the firstborn are owed to him.

17  But the first-born, the son of the hated, he must receive double portion of all that he has; for he is the first of his children; and the right of the first-born is his.

18  If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, that will not hearken to the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and though they chasten him, will not hearken unto them;

18  And if any man has a disobedient and contentious son, who hearkens not to the voice of his father and the voice of his mother, and they should correct him, and he should not hearken to them;

18  If a man produces a disobedient and reckless son, who will not listen to the orders of his father or mother, and, having been corrected, shows contempt for obedience

19  then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;

19  they shall take him and lead him to the elders of the city and to the gate of judgment.

20  and they shall say unto the elders of his city: 'This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he doth not hearken to our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.'

20  And they shall say to them: ‘This our son is reckless and disobedient. He shows contempt when listening to our admonitions. He occupies himself with carousing, and self-indulgence, and feasting.’

21  And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die; so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

21  Then the people of the city shall stone him to death. And he shall die, so that you may take away the evil from your midst. And so may all of Israel, upon hearing it, be very afraid.

22  And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree;

22  And if there be sin in any one, and the judgement of death be upon him, and he be put to death, and ye hang him on a tree

22  When a man will have sinned in a matter which is punished by death, and, having been judged unto death, he has been hanged on a gallows

23  his body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt surely bury him the same day; for he that is hanged is a reproach unto God; that thou defile not thy land which YHWH thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

23  his corpse shall not remain on the tree. Instead, he shall be buried on the same day. For he who hangs from a tree has been cursed by God, and you shall not defile your land, which the Lord your God will give to you as a possession.”

22:1  Thou shalt not see thy brother's ox or his sheep driven away, and hide thyself from them; thou shalt surely bring them back unto thy brother.

When thou seest the calf of thy brother or his sheep wandering in the way, thou shalt not overlook them; thou shalt by all means turn them back to thy brother, and thou shalt restore them to him.

“If you see your brother’s ox or sheep wander astray, you shall not pass by. Instead, you shall lead them back to your brother.

22:2  And if thy brother be not nigh unto thee, and thou know him not, then thou shalt bring it home to thy house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother require it, and thou shalt restore it to him.

But if your brother is not near, or you do not know him, you shall lead them to your house, and they shall be with you until your brother seeks them and receives them.

And if your brother is not near you, or if you do not know him, then you shall bring it to your own house, and it shall be with you until your brother seeks after it, and you shall restore it to him again.

22:3  And so shalt thou do with his ass; and so shalt thou do with his garment; and so shalt thou do with every lost thing of thy brother's, which he hath lost, and thou hast found; thou mayest not hide thyself.

You shall act in a similar manner with his donkey, and his clothing, and all the belongings of your brother that have been lost. If you find it, you shall not neglect it, as if it belonged to a stranger.

22:4  Thou shalt not see thy brother's ass or his ox fallen down by the way, and hide thyself from them; thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again.

If you see that your brother’s donkey or ox has fallen along the way, you shall not disregard it. Instead, you shall lift it up with him.

You shall not see your enemy's ass or his ox fallen down by the way, and turn away your eyes from them; but you shall surely help him to lift them up again.

22:5  A woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment; for whosoever doeth these things is an abomination unto YHWH thy God.

The apparel of a man shall not be on a woman, neither shall a man put on a woman’s dress; for every one that does these things is an abomination to the Lord thy God.

A woman shall not be clothed with manly apparel, nor shall a man make use of feminine apparel. For whoever does these things is abominable with God.

22:6  If a bird's nest chance to be before thee in the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young;

And if thou shouldest come upon a brood of birds before thy face in the way or upon any tree, or upon the earth, young or eggs, and the mother be brooding on the young or the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young ones.

If, as you are walking along the way, you find a bird’s nest, in a tree or on the ground, and the mother is nurturing the young or the eggs, you shall not take her with her young.

22:7  thou shalt in any wise let the dam go, but the young thou mayest take unto thyself; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days.

Instead, you shall permit her to go, retaining the young that you have caught, so that it may be well with you, and you may live for a long time.

But you shall surely let the mother go, and take the young for yourself; that it may be well with you, and that you may live long.

22:8  When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a parapet for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thy house, if any man fall from thence.

If thou shouldest build a new house, then shalt thou make a parapet to thy house; so thou shalt not bring blood-guiltiness upon thy house, if one should in any wise fall from it.

When you build a new house, you shall make a wall around the roof. Otherwise, someone may slip and fall down violently, and so blood would be shed at your house, and you would be guilty.

22:9  Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with two kinds of seed; lest the fulness of the seed which thou hast sown be forfeited together with the increase of the vineyard.

You shall not sow your vineyard with another seed, lest both the seed that you have sown and what springs forth from the vineyard be sanctified together.

22:10  Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together.

10  You shall not till with an ox and a donkey at the same time.

22:11  Thou shalt not wear a mingled stuff, wool and linen together.

11  You shall not wear a vestment which has been woven from both wool and linen.

22:12  Thou shalt make thee twisted cords upon the four corners of thy covering, wherewith thou coverest thyself.

12  You shall make strings along the hem, at the four corners of your cloak, which covers you.

22:13  If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her,

13  And if any one should take a wife, and dwell with her, and hate her,

13  If a man takes a wife, and afterwards he has hatred for her,

22:14  and lay wanton charges against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say: 'I took this woman, and when I came nigh to her, I found not in her the tokens of virginity';

14  and so he seeks opportunities to dismiss her, imputing a very wicked name to her by saying, ‘I received this woman as a wife, and upon entering to her, I found her not to be a virgin,’

22:15  then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel's virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate.

15  then her father and mother shall take her, and they shall bring with them the signs of her virginity, to the elders of the city who are at the gate.

22:16  And the damsel's father shall say unto the elders: 'I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her;

16  And the father shall say: ‘I gave my daughter to this man as a wife. And because he hates her,

22:17  and, lo, he hath laid wanton charges, saying: I found not in thy daughter the tokens of virginity; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity.' And they shall spread the garment before the elders of the city.

17  and now he has hated her, and attaches reproachful words to her, saying, I have not found tokens of virginity with thy daughter; and these are the tokens of my daughter’s virginity. And they shall unfold the garment before the elders of the city.

17  he accuses her with a very wicked name, by saying: “I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.” But behold, these are the signs of my daughter’s virginity.’ And they shall spread the clothing before the elders of the city.

22:18  And the elders of that city shall take the man and chastise him.

22:19  And they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel; and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.

19  Moreover, they shall fine him one hundred shekels of silver, which he will give to the father of the girl, because he has committed slander, with a very wicked name, against a virgin of Israel. And he shall have her as a wife, and he cannot dismiss her throughout all the days of his life.

22:20  But if this thing be true, that the tokens of virginity were not found in the damsel;

20  But if what he has claimed is true and virginity is not found in the girl,

22:21  then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die; because she hath wrought a wanton deed in Israel, to play the harlot in her father's house; so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.

21  then they shall throw her down, outside the doors of her father’s house, and the men of that city shall stone her to death, and she shall die. For she has acted wickedly in Israel, in that she fornicated in her father’s house. And so shall you take away the evil from your midst.

22:22  If a man be found lying with a woman married to a husband, then they shall both of them die, the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so shalt thou put away the evil from Israel.

22  And if a man be found lying with a woman married to a man, ye shall kill them both, the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou remove the wicked one out of Israel.

22  If a man sleeps with the wife of another, then they shall both die, that is, the adulterer and the adulteress. And so shall you take away the evil from Israel.

22:23  If there be a damsel that is a virgin betrothed unto a man, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;

23  And if there be a young damsel espoused to a man, and a man should have found her in the city and have lain with her;

23  If a man has betrothed a girl who is a virgin, and if someone finds her in the city and he lies with her,

22:24  then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die: the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife; so thou shalt put away the evil from the midst of thee.

24  ye shall bring them both out to the gate of their city, and they shall be stoned with stones, and they shall die; the damsel, because she cried not in the city; and the man, because he humbled his neighbour’s spouse: so shalt thou remove the evil one from yourselves.

22:25  But if the man find the damsel that is betrothed in the field, and the man take hold of her, and lie with her; then the man only that lay with her shall die.

25  But if a man find in the field a damsel that is betrothed, and he should force her and lie with her, ye shall slay the man that lay with her only.

25  But if a man discovers, in the countryside, a girl who has been betrothed, and, apprehending her, he lies with her, then he alone shall die.

22:26  But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death; for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter.

26  And the damsel has not committed a sin worthy of death; as if a man should rise up against his neighbour, and slay him, so is this thing;

26  The girl shall suffer nothing, nor is she guilty unto death. For just as a robber rises up against his brother and slays his life, so also did the girl suffer greatly.

22:27  For he found her in the field; the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her.

27  because he found her in the field; the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to help her.

27  She was alone in the field. She cried out, and there was no one nearby, who might deliver her.

22:28  If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, that is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;

28  And if any one should find a young virgin who has not been betrothed, and should force her and lie with her, and be found,

28  If a man find a girl who is a virgin, who does not have a betrothal, and, taking her, he lies with her, and the matter is brought to judgment,

22:29  then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he hath humbled her; he may not put her away all his days.

29  the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the damsel fifty silver didrachms, and she shall be his wife, because he has humbled her; he shall never be able to put her away.

29  then he who slept with her shall give to the father of the girl fifty shekels of silver, and he shall have her as a wife, because he has humiliated her. He cannot dismiss her, throughout all the days of his life.

22:30  A man shall not take his father's wife, and shall not uncover his father's skirt.

30  No man shall take his father’s wife, nor remove her covering.”

23:1  He that is crushed or maimed in his privy parts shall not enter into the assembly of YHWH.

“A eunuch, one whose testicles have been debilitated or cut off, or whose penis has been cut off, shall not enter into the church of the Lord.

NO adulterer shall enter into the assembly of the LORD.

23:2  A bastard shall not enter into the assembly of YHWH; even to the tenth generation shall none of his enter into the assembly of the YHWH.

One born of a harlot shall not enter into the assembly of the Lord.

The offspring of a harlot, that is, one born of a prostitute, shall not enter into the church of the Lord, until the tenth generation.

23:3  An Ammonite or a Moabite shall not enter into the assembly of YHWH; even to the tenth generation shall none of them enter into the assembly of the YHWH for ever;

The Ammonite and the Moabite, even after the tenth generation, shall not enter into the church of the Lord forever,

Dt23:4  An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to their tenth generation shall they not enter into the congregation of the LORD for ever

23:4  because they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and because they hired against thee Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Aram-naharaim, to curse thee.

because they were not willing to meet you with bread and water along the way, when you had departed from Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam, the son of Beor, from Mesopotamia in Syria, in order to curse you.

23:5  Nevertheless YHWH thy God would not hearken unto Balaam; but the YHWH thy God turned the curse into a blessing unto thee, because the LORD thy God loved thee.

But the Lord your God was not willing to listen to Balaam, and he turned his cursing into your blessing, because he loves you.

23:6  Thou shalt not seek their peace nor their prosperity all thy days for ever.

You shall not make peace with them, nor shall you seek their prosperity, throughout all the days of your life forever.

You shall not seek their peace nor their prosperity all the days of your life for ever.

23:7  Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite, for he is thy brother; thou shalt not abhor an Egyptian, because thou wast a stranger in his land.

You shall not abhor anyone from Idumea, for he is your brother, nor the Egyptian, for you were a new arrival in his land.

You shall not drive away an Edomite, for he is your brother; you shall not drive away an Egyptian, because you were a sojourner in his land.

23:8  The children of the third generation that are born unto them may enter into the assembly of YHWH.

If sons be born to them, in the third generation they shall enter into the assembly of the Lord.

Those who have been born of them, in the third generation, shall enter into the church of the Lord.

23:9  When thou goest forth in camp against thine enemies, then thou shalt keep thee from every evil thing.

When you have gone out to war against your enemies, you shall keep yourself from everything that is evil.

23:10  If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of that which chanceth him by night, then shall he go abroad out of the camp, he shall not come within the camp.

10  If there should be in thee a man who is not clean by reason of his issue by night, then he shall go forth out of the camp, and he shall not enter into the camp.

10  If there is a man among you who has been defiled by a dream in the night, he shall depart from the camp.

23:11  But it shall be, when evening cometh on, he shall bathe himself in water; and when the sun is down, he may come within the camp.

11  And it shall come to pass toward evening he shall wash his body with water, and when the sun has gone down, he shall go into the camp.

11  And he shall not return before the evening, after he has washed with water, and then, after the sun sets, he shall return to the camp.

23:12  Thou shalt have a place also without the camp, whither thou shalt go forth abroad.

12  And thou shalt have a place outside of the camp, and thou shalt go out thither,

12  You shall have a place beyond the camp to which you may go for the necessities of nature,

23:13  And thou shalt have a paddle among thy weapons; and it shall be, when thou sittest down abroad, thou shalt dig therewith, and shalt turn back and cover that which cometh from thee.

13  carrying a small shovel at your belt. And when you would sit down, you shall dig around, and then, with the soil that was dug up, you shall cover

13  And you shall have a peg upon your weapon; and it shall be, when you relieve yourself, you shall dig with it, and then you shall cover your dung;

23:14  For YHWH thy God walketh in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee, and to give up thine enemies before thee; therefore shall thy camp be holy; that He see no unseemly thing in thee, and turn away from thee.

14  that from which you were relieved. For the Lord your God walks in the midst of your camp, in order to rescue you, and to deliver your enemies to you. And so, let your camp be holy, and let nothing filthy appear within it, lest he abandon you.

23:15  Thou shalt not deliver unto his master a bondman that is escaped from his master unto thee;

15  You shall not deliver a servant who has fled to you to his master.

23:16  he shall dwell with thee, in the midst of thee, in the place which he shall choose within one of thy gates, where it liketh him best; thou shalt not wrong him.

16  He shall live with you in a place that pleases him, and he shall rest in one of your cities. You shall not grieve him.

16  But he shall dwell with you in the place which he shall choose in one of your towns, where it pleases him best; you shall not oppress him.

23:17  There shall be no harlot of the daughters of Israel, neither shall there be a sodomite of the sons of Israel.

17  There shall not be a harlot of the daughters of Israel, and there shall not be a fornicator of the sons of Israel; there shall not be an idolatress of the daughters of Israel, and there shall not be an initiated person of the sons of Israel.

17  There shall be no prostitutes among the daughters of Israel, nor anyone among the sons of Israel who visits a prostitute.

23:18  Thou shalt not bring the hire of a harlot, or the price of a dog, into the house of YHWH thy God for any vow; for even both these are an abomination unto the YHWH thy God.

18  You shall not offer money from a prostitute, nor the price of a dog, in the house of the Lord your God, no matter what you may have vowed. For both of these are an abomination with the Lord your God.

23:19  Thou shalt not lend upon interest to thy brother: interest of money, interest of victuals, interest of any thing that is lent upon interest.

19  You shall not lend money, or grain, or anything else at all, to your brother at interest,

23:20  Unto a foreigner thou mayest lend upon interest; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon interest; that YHWH thy God may bless thee in all that thou puttest thy hand unto, in the land whither thou goest in to possess it.

20  Thou mayest lend on usury to a stranger, but to thy brother thou shalt not lend on usury; that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all thy works upon the land, into which thou art entering to inherit it.

20  but only to a foreigner. For you shall lend to your brother whatever he needs without interest, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all your works in the land, which you shall enter so as to possess it.

23:21  When thou shalt vow a vow unto YHWH thy God, thou shalt not be slack to pay it; for the YHWH thy God will surely require it of thee; and it will be sin in thee.

21  And if thou wilt vow a vow to the Lord thy God, thou shalt not delay to pay it; for the Lord thy God will surely require it of thee, and otherwise it shall be sin in thee.

21  When you have made a vow to the Lord your God, you shall not be late in paying it. For the Lord your God demands it. And if you delay, it shall be imputed to you as a sin.

23:22  But if thou shalt forbear to vow, it shall be no sin in thee.

24:5  When a man taketh a new wife, he shall not go out in the host, neither shall he be charged with any business; he shall be free for his house one year, and shall cheer his wife whom he hath taken.

Dt24:7  And if any one should have recently taken a wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall any thing be laid upon him; he shall be free in his house; for one year he shall cheer his wife whom he has taken.

When a man has recently taken a wife, he shall not go out to war, nor shall any public office be enjoined upon him. Instead, he shall be free at home without guilt, so that for one year he may rejoice with his wife.

24:6  No man shall take the mill or the upper millstone to pledge; for he taketh a man's life to pledge.

Dt24:8  Thou shalt not take for a pledge the under millstone, nor the upper millstone; for he who does so takes life for a pledge.

You shall not accept an upper or lower millstone as collateral. For then he will have placed his life with you.

25:3  Forty stripes he may give him, he shall not exceed; lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should be dishonoured before thine eyes.

When brothers are living together, and one of them dies without children, the wife of the deceased shall not marry another. Instead, his brother shall take her, and he shall raise up offspring for his brother.

25:7  And if the man like not to take his brother's wife, then his brother's wife shall go up to the gate unto the elders, and say: 'My husband's brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband's brother unto me.'

And if the man should not be willing to take his brother’s wife, then shall the woman go up to the gate to the elders, and she shall say, My husband’s brother will not raise up the name of his brother in Israel, my husband’s brother has refused.

But if he is not willing to take his brother’s wife, who by law must go to him, the woman shall go to the gate of the city, and she shall call upon those greater by birth, and she shall say: ‘The brother of my husband is not willing to raise up his brother’s name in Israel; nor will he join with me.’

25:8  Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him; and if he stand, and say: 'I like not to take her';

And the elders of his city shall call him, and speak to him; and if he stand and say, I will not take her

And immediately, they shall summon him to be sent, and they shall question him. If he responds, ‘I am not willing to accept her as a wife,’
