The Bible in Its Traditions

Galatians 1:0; 1:1–24:18

Byz Nes V S TR

Paul, an apostle (not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead),

and all the brothers with me, to the churches of Galatia

Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ,

who gave Himself for our sins, so that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,

To him is glory forever and ever. Amen.

I marvel that you are turning so quickly from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel,

I wonder that you have been so quickly transferred, from him who called you into the grace of Christ, over to another gospel.

I am surprised how soon you have turned to another gospel, away from Christ who has called you by his grace;

which is not another; except there are certain people who trouble you and wish to pervert the gospel of Christ.

For there is no other, except that there are some persons who disturb you and who want to overturn the Gospel of Christ.

A gospel which does not exist; howbeit, there are men who have stirred you up, and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.

Byz Nes S TR

But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach a gospel to you other than what we preached to you, let him be accursed.

But if anyone, even we ourselves or an Angel from Heaven, were to preach to you a gospel other than the one that we have preached to you, let him be anathema.

As we have said before, and I say again just now, if anyone preaches a gospel to you other than what you received, let him be accursed.

Just as we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone has preached a gospel to you, other than that which you have received, let him be anathema.

10  For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.

10  For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? or am I striving to please men? if I were still pleasing men, I should not be a servant of Christ.

11  But I make known to you, brothers, the gospel preached by me is not according to man.

11  For I make known to you, brethren, as touching the gospel which was preached by me, that it is not after man.

11  But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.

12  For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but through the revelation of Jesus Christ.

13  For you have heard of my former conduct at one time in Judaism, that beyond measure I used to persecute the church of God, and I was devastating it.

13  You have heard of the manner of my life in time past in the JewsÆ religion, how beyond measure I persecuted the Church of God and tried to destroy it

13  For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it

14  And I was advancing in Judaism above many my own age, being far more zealous for the traditions of my forefathers.

14  and I advanced in the Jews` religion beyond many of mine own age among my countrymen, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

14  And how that I was far more advanced in the JewsÆ religion than many of my age among the people of my race for above all, I was especially zealous for the doctrines of my forefathers.

21  Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia.

23  But they heard only, "He who persecuted us in times past now preaches the faith which at one time he was devastating."

23  For they had only heard that: “He, who formerly persecuted us, now evangelizes the faith which he once fought.”

23  For they had heard only this much; that he who had persecuted us before now preached the faith which previously he tried to destroy.

Byz Nes V S TR

24  And they glorified God in me.

2:1  Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, also taking Titus along.

Byz Nes TR

2:2  And I went up by revelation, and I set before them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to those with influence, lest somehow I might run, or had run, in vain.

And I went up according to revelation, and I debated with them about the Gospel that I am preaching among the Gentiles, but away from those who were pretending to be something, lest perhaps I might run, or have run, in vain.

And I went up because of a revelation, and I declared to them the gospel which I preached among the Gentiles, and I privately explained to those who were considered leaders among us, lest by any means I had labored, or should labor in vain.

2:3  But not even Titus who was with me, although he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised;

And Titus, also, who was with me, being Syrian, was not compelled to be circumcised,

Byz Nes TR

2:4  and that was because of false brothers secretly brought in (who slipped in to spy out our freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might reduce us to slavery),

but only because of false brothers, who were brought in unknowingly. They entered secretly to spy on our liberty, which we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might reduce us to servitude.

2:6  But from those who seemed to be something-whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God shows partiality to no man-so to me, those with influence contributed nothing,

and away from those who were pretending to be something. (Whatever they might have been once, it means nothing to me. God does not accept the reputation of a man.) And those who were claiming to be something had nothing to offer me.

Byz S

2:7  but on the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted [with] the gospel for the uncircumcised, just as Peter [was with the gospel ]for the circumcised,

but contrariwise, when they saw that I had been intrusted with the gospel of the uncircumcision, even as Peter with [the gospel] of the circumcision

But it was to the contrary, since they had seen that the Gospel to the uncircumcised was entrusted to me, just as the Gospel to the circumcised was entrusted to Peter.

And so, when they had acknowledged the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, who seemed like pillars, gave to me and to Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we would go to the Gentiles, while they went to the circumcised,

2:12  For before certain [men] came from James, he would eat together with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to draw back and began to separate himself, fearing those of the circumcision party.

2:13  And the rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.

13  And the other Jews consented to his pretense, so that even Barnabas was led by them into that falseness.

13  And all the other Jewish converts cast their lots with him on this issue, insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away by their dissimulation.

Byz Nes S TR

2:14  But when I saw that they did not act rightly with respect to the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, "If you, being a Jew, live in Gentile fashion and not in Jewish fashion, why do you compel the Gentiles to live as Jews?

14  But when I had seen that they were not walking correctly, by the truth of the Gospel, I said to Cephas in front of everyone: “If you, while you are a Jew, are living like the Gentiles and not the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to keep the customs of the Jews?”

16  And we know that man is not justified by the works of the law, but only by the faith of Jesus Christ. And so we believe in Christ Jesus, in order that we may be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law. For no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.

2:18  For if I build again the[ ]things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.

18  For if I rebuild the things that I have destroyed, I establish myself as a prevaricator.

2:19  For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God.

19  For through the law, I have become dead to the law, so that I may live for God. I have been nailed to the cross with Christ.

2:20  I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the [life] which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me.

20  I live; yet now, it is not I, but truly Christ, who lives in me. And though I live now in the flesh, I live in the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and who delivered himself for me.

2:21  I do not annul the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing."

21  I do not reject the grace of God. For if justice is through the law, then Christ died in vain.

3:1  O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you, that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was portrayed publicly among you as crucified?

O foolish Galatians, who did bewitch you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly set forth crucified?

O senseless Galatians, who has so fascinated you that you would not obey the truth, even though Jesus Christ has been presented before your eyes, crucified among you?

Byz Nes V S TR

3:2  This only do I wish to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Byz Nes S TR

Are you so foolish that, though you began with the Spirit, you would now end with the flesh?

3:4  Have you suffered so many things in vain-If indeed [they] really [were] in vain?

3:5  Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?-

He therefore that supplieth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, [doeth he it] by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Byz S

3:6  Just as Abraham "believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness."

Even as Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness.

It is just as it was written: “Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.”

Byz Nes V

3:7  Know therefore that those who are of faith, these are sons of Abraham.

You must know therefore, that those who trust on faith are the children of Abraham.

Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

Byz Nes TR

3:8  And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, [saying] that, "In you all the nations shall be blessed."

Thus Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, foretold to Abraham: “All nations shall be blessed in you.”

Because God knew in advance that the Gentiles would be declared righteous through faith, he first preached to Abraham, as it is said in the Holy Scripture, In you shall all the Gentiles be blessed.

Byz

3:9  Therefore those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.

So then they that are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham.

Byz Nes V TR

3:10  For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all the things which are written in the book of the law, to do them."

10  For those who rely on the works of the law are still under the curse: for as it is written, Cursed is everyone who does not practice everything which is written in the book of the law.

Byz Nes S TR
V

3:11  But that no one is justified by the law before God is evident, for "The just shall live by faith."

11  And, since in the law no one is justified with God, this is manifest: “For the just man lives by faith.”

Byz V
Nes TR

3:12  But the law is not of faith, but "the man who does them shall live by them."

12  and the law is not of faith; but, He that doeth them shall live in them.

12  Thus the law is not made by faith, but, Whosoever shall do the things which are written in it shall live in it.

Byz Nes V S TR

3:13  Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us, for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,"

Byz Nes S TR

3:14  so that the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

14  This was so that the blessing of Abraham might reach the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, in order that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

3:15  Brothers, I speak in human fashion: A covenant is of a man, yet having been confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it.

15  Brethren, I speak after the manner of men: Though it be but a man`s covenant, yet when it hath been confirmed, no one maketh it void, or addeth thereto.

15  My brethren, I speak as a man; Though it be but a manÆs covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man can reject it or change anything in it.

Byz Nes TR

3:16  Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises spoken. He does not say, "And to seeds,"as of many, but as of one, "And to your Seed,"who is Christ.

16  The promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. He did not say, “and to descendents,” as if to many, but instead, as if to one, he said, “and to your offspring,” who is Christ.

16  Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his seed as a covenant. He did not say, To your seeds, as of many, but to your seed, as one, that is Christ.

Byz S TR
Nes
V

3:17  And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, does not annul the covenant previously confirmed to Christ by God, so that it make the promise of no effect.

17  Now this I say: A covenant confirmed beforehand by God, the law, which came four hundred and thirty years after, doth not disannul, so as to make the promise of none effect.

17  But I say this: the testament confirmed by God, which, after four hundred and thirty years became the Law, does not nullify, so as to make the promise empty.

Byz Nes V S TR

3:18  For if the inheritance [comes] by the law, it is no longer of promise; but God has given it to Abraham by promise.

Byz Nes TR
V S

3:19  Why then the law? It was added on account of transgressions, until the Seed should come to whom it had been promised; and it was commanded through angels by the hand of a mediator.

19  Why, then, was there a law? It was established because of transgressions, until the offspring would arrive, to whom he made the promise, ordained by Angels through the hand of a mediator.

Byz S TR
Nes V

3:20  Now the mediator is not for one person, but God is one.

20  Now a mediator is not [a mediator] of one; but God is one.

Byz
Nes S TR

3:21  Therefore, [is] the law against the promises of God? By no means! For if a law had been given which was able to give life, truly righteousness would have been by the law.

21  Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could make alive, verily righteousness would have been of the law.

21  So then, was the law contrary to the promises of God? Let it not be so! For if a law had been given, which was able to give life, truly justice would be of the law.

Byz Nes V S TR

3:22  But the Scripture has confined all under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

3:23  But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, having been hemmed in for the faith which was to be revealed.

Byz TR Nes S

3:24  Therefore the law has become our custodian, [leading us] to Christ, so that we might be justified by faith.

24  And so the law was our guardian in Christ, in order that we might be justified by faith.

Byz Nes TR

3:25  But after faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian.

25  But now that faith has arrived, we are no longer under a guardian.

25  But since faith has come, we no longer are in need of the pathfinder.

Byz Nes V S

3:26  For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

26  For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

Byz Nes V TR

29  So if you belong to Christ, then you are descendants of Abraham, and his heirs according to the promise.

Byz TR

4:1  Now I say, for as much time as the heir is a minor, he does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all,

But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he differeth nothing from a bondservant though he is lord of all;

NOW this I say, That the heir as long as he is young, cannot be distinguished from the servants, though he is the lord of them all.

So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the rudiments of the world

that he might redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

To redeem them who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Byz Nes V S TR

4:6  And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"

Byz Nes TR

4:7  Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, also an heir of God through Christ.

4:24  which things are symbolic. For these are two covenants: one in fact from Mount Sinai, bearing children into slavery, which is Hagar-

24  These things are said through an allegory. For these represent the two testaments. Certainly the one, on Mount Sinai, gives birth unto servitude, which is Hagar.

24  Now these things are a symbol of the two covenants; the one from Mount Sinai, give girls birth to bondage, which is Hagar.

Byz V S TR

4:25  for Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, and is in slavery with her children-

Byz Nes V S TR

4:27  For it is written: "Rejoice, O barren, who does not give birth; break forth and shout, who does not have birth pangs; because the children of the desolate are many more than those of her who has a husband."

27  For as it is written, Make merry, O you barren who bear not; rejoice and cry, O you who travail not; for the children of the forsaken are more numerous than the children of the one who is favored.

Byz V

4:28  But we, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.

28  Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

4:29  But just as then the [one] who was born according to the flesh persecuted the [one born] according to the Spirit, so also it is now.

29  But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him [that was born] after the Spirit, so also it is now.

Byz S TR

4:30  But what does the Scripture say? "Cast out the servant girl and her son, for the son of the servant girl shall by no means inherit with the son of the freewoman."

30  Howbeit what saith the scripture? Cast out the handmaid and her son: for the son of the handmaid shall not inherit with the son of the freewoman.

30  And what does Scripture say? “Cast out the woman servant and her son. For the son of a servant women shall not be an heir with the son of a free woman.”
