1  And the whole earth was of one language and of one speech.

1  And all the earth was one lip, and there was one language to all.

1  NOW the whole earth spoke one language and with one manner of speech.

2  And it came to pass, as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

2  And when they were advancing from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt in it.

3  And they said one to another: 'Come, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly.' And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar.

3  And a man said to his neighbour, Come, let us make bricks and bake them with fire. And the brick was to them for stone, and their mortar was bitumen.

3  And each one said to his neighbor, “Come, let us make bricks, and bake them with fire.” And they had bricks instead of stones, and pitch instead of mortar.

4  And they said: 'Come, let us build us a city, and a tower, with its top in heaven, and let us make us a name; lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.'

4  And they said, Come, let us build to ourselves a city and tower, whose top shall be to heaven, and let us make to ourselves a name, before we are scattered abroad upon the face of all the earth.

5  And YHWH came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

5  And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of men built.

5  Then the Lord descended to see the city and the tower, which the sons of Adam were building.

6  And YHWH said: 'Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is what they begin to do; and now nothing will be withholden from them, which they purpose to do.

6  And the Lord said, Behold, there is one race, and one lip of all, and they have begun to do this, and now nothing shall fail from them of all that they may have undertaken to do.

6  And he said: “Behold, the people are united, and all have one tongue. And since they have begun to do this, they will not desist from their plans, until they have completed their work.

7  Come, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.'

7  Come, and having gone down let us there confound their tongue, that they may not understand each the voice of his neighbour.

7  Therefore, come, let us descend, and in that place confound their tongue, so that they may not listen, each one to the voice of his neighbor.”

8  So YHWH scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth; and they left off to build the city.

8  And the Lord scattered them thence over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city and the tower.

8  And so the Lord divided them from that place into all the lands, and they ceased to build the city.

9  Therefore was the name of it called Babel; because YHWH did there confound the language of all the earth; and from thence did the YHWH scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

9  On this account its name was called Confusion, because there the Lord confounded the languages of all the earth, and thence the Lord scattered them upon the face of all the earth.

9  And for this reason, its name was called ‘Babel,’ because in that place the language of the whole earth became confused. And from then on, the Lord scattered them across the face of every region.

10  These are the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old, and begot Arpachshad two years after the flood.

10  And these are the generations of Sem: and Sem was a hundred years old when he begot Arphaxad, the second year after the flood.

11  And Shem lived after he begot Arpachshad five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

11  And after he conceived Arphaxad, Shem lived for five hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.

11  And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters. And they were all days of Shem six hundred years and he is dying.

12  And Arpachshad lived five and thirty years, and begot Shelah.

12  And Arphaxad lived a hundred and thirty-five years, and begot Cainan.

12  Next, Arphaxad lived for thirty-five years, and then he conceived Shelah.

13  And Arpachshad lived after he begot Shelah four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.

13  And Arphaxad lived after he had begotten Cainan, four hundred years, and begot sons and daughters, and died. And Cainan lived a hundred and thirty years and begot Sala; and Canaan lived after he had begotten Sala, three hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters, and died.

14  And Shelah lived thirty years, and begot Eber.

14  And Sala lived an hundred and thirty years, and begot Heber.

14  Likewise, Shelah lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Eber.

15  And Shelah lived after he begot Eber four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.

15  And after he conceived Eber, Shelah lived for four hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.

15  And Salah lived after he begat Eber three hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters. And they were all days of Salah three and thirty years and four hundred years, and he is dying.

16  And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begot Peleg.

16  And Heber lived an hundred and thirty-four years, and begot Phaleg.

16  Then Eber lived for thirty-four years, and he conceived Peleg.

17  And Eber lived after he begot Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.

18  And Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu.

18  And Phaleg lived and hundred and thirty years, and begot Ragau.

18  Likewise, Peleg lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Reu.

19  And Peleg lived after he begot Reu two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.

19  And after he conceived Reu, Peleg lived for two hundred and nine years, and he conceived sons and daughters.

20  And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begot Serug.

20  And Ragau lived and hundred thirty and two years, and begot Seruch.

20  Then Reu lived for thirty-two years, and then he conceived Serug.

21  And Reu lived after he begot Serug two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.

21  Likewise, after he conceived Serug, Reu lived for two hundred and seven years, and he conceived sons and daughters.

22  And Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor.

22  And Seruch lived a hundred and thirty years, and begot Nachor.

22  In truth, Serug lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Nahor.

23  And Serug lived after he begot Nahor two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

23  And after he conceived Nahor, Serug lived for two hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.

23  And Serug lived after he begat Nahor hundred years, and begat sons and daughters. And they were all days of Serug thirty years and two hundred years, and he is dying.

24  And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begot Terah.

24  And so Nahor lived for twenty-nine years, and then he conceived Terah.

25  And Nahor lived after he begot Terah a hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.

25  And after he conceived Terah, Nahor lived for one hundred and nineteen years, and he conceived sons and daughters.

25  And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an sixty and nine years, and begat sons and daughters. And they were all days of Nahor eight and forty years and hundred years, and he is dying

26  And Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27  Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot.

28  And Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.

28  And Arrhan died in the presence of Tharrha his father, in the land in which he was born, in the country of the Chaldees.

29  And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

30  And Sarai was barren; she had no child.

30  But Sarai was barren and had no children.

31  And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.

31  And Tharrha took Abram his son, and Lot the son Arrhan, the son of his son, and Sara his daughter-in-law, the wife of Abram his son, and led them forth out of the land of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Chanaan, and they came as far as Charrhan, and he dwelt there.

32  And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.

32  And all the days of Tharrha in the land of Charrhan were two hundred and five years, and Tharrha died in Charrhan.

12:1  Now YHWH said unto Abram: 'Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto the land that I will show thee.

12:2  And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and be thou a blessing.

12:3  And I will bless them that bless thee, and him that curseth thee will I curse; and in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed.'

3  I will bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you, and in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

12:4  So Abram went, as YHWH had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him; and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

4  And so Abram departed just as the Lord had instructed him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

12:5  And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.

5  And Abram took Sara his wife, and Lot the son of his brother, and all their possessions, as many as they had got, and every soul which they had got in Charrhan, and they went forth to go into the land of Chanaan.

5  And he took his wife Sarai, and Lot, the son of his brother, and all the substance which they had come to possess, and the lives which they had acquired in Haran, and they departed in order to go to the land of Canaan. And when they arrived in it,

12:6  And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Shechem, unto the terebinth of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.

6  And Abram traversed the land lengthwise as far as the place Sychem, to the high oak, and the Chananites then inhabited the land.

6  Abram passed through the land even to the place of Shechem, as far as the famous steep valley. Now at that time, the Canaanite was in the land.

12:7  And YHWH appeared unto Abram, and said: 'Unto thy seed will I give this land'; and he builded there an altar unto the YHWH, who appeared unto him.

7  And the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, I will give this land to thy seed. And Abram built an altar there to the Lord who appeared to him.

7  Then the Lord appeared to Abram, and he said to him, “To your offspring, I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

12:8  And he removed from thence unto the mountain on the east of Beth-el, and pitched his tent, having Beth-el on the west, and Ai on the east; and he builded there an altar unto YHWH, and called upon the name of the YHWH.

8  And he departed thence to the mountain eastward of Baethel, and there he pitched his tent in Baethel near the sea, and Aggai toward the east, and there he built an altar to the Lord, and called on the name of the Lord.

8  And passing on from there to a mountain, which was opposite the east of Bethel, he pitched his tent there, having Bethel to the west, and Hai on the east. He also built an altar there to the Lord, and he called upon his name.

12:9  And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South.

9  And Abram departed and went and encamped in the wilderness.

12:10  And there was a famine in the land; and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was sore in the land.

10  But a famine occurred in the land. And Abram descended to Egypt, to sojourn there. For famine prevailed over the land.

12:11  And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife: 'Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon.

11  And it came to pass when Abram drew nigh to enter into Egypt, Abram said to Sara his wife, I know that thou art a fair woman.

11  And when he was close to entering Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai: “I know you to be a beautiful woman.

12:12  And it will come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they will say: This is his wife; and they will kill me, but thee they will keep alive.

12  It shall come to pass then that when the Egyptians shall see thee, they shall say, This is his wife, and they shall slay me, but they shall save thee alive.

12  And when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘She is his wife.’ And they will put me to death, and retain you.

12:13  Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister; that it may be well with me for thy sake, and that my soul may live because of thee.'

13  Therefore, I beg you to say that you are my sister, so that it may be well with me because of you, and so that my soul may live by your favor.”

13  Say, therefore, that you are my sister because I will be treated well for your sake; and my life shall be spared because of you.

12:14  And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair.

14  And so, when Abram had arrived in Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was exceedingly beautiful.

12:15  And the princes of Pharaoh saw her, and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.

15  that the princes of Pharao saw her, and praised her to Pharao and brought her into the house of Pharao.

15  And the princes reported it to Pharaoh, and they praised her to him. And the woman was inducted into the house of Pharaoh.

12:16  And he dealt well with Abram for her sake; and he had sheep, and oxen, and he-asses, and men-servants, and maid-servants, and she-asses, and camels.

16  And they treated Abram well on her account, and he had sheep, and calves, and asses, and men-servants, and women-servants, and mules, and camels.

16  In truth, they treated Abram well because of her. And he had sheep and oxen and male donkeys, and men servants, and women servants, and female donkeys, and camels.

12:17  And YHWH plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife.

17  And God afflicted Pharao with great and severe afflictions, and his house, because of Sara, Abram’s wife.

17  But the Lord scourged Pharaoh and his house with great wounds because of Sarai, the wife of Abram.

12:18  And Pharaoh called Abram, and said: 'What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?

18  So Pharaoh called Abram, and said to him, What is this that you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?

12:19  Why saidst thou: She is my sister? so that I took her to be my wife; now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.'

19  Wherefore didst thou say, She is my sister? and I took her for a wife to myself; and now, behold, thy wife is before thee, take her and go quickly away.

19  For what reason did you claim her to be your sister, so that I would take her to me as a wife? Now therefore, behold your mate, receive her and go.”

12:20  And Pharaoh gave men charge concerning him; and they brought him on the way, and his wife, and all that he had.

20  And Pharao gave charge to men concerning Abram, to join in sending him forward, and his wife, and all that he had.

20  And Pharaoh instructed his men about Abram. And they led him away with his wife and all that he had.

13:1  And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the South.

1  Therefore, Abram ascended from Egypt, he and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, toward the southern region.

13:2  And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

2  But he was very wealthy by the possession of gold and silver.

13:3  And he went on his journeys from the South even to Beth-el, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Beth-el and Ai;

3  And he went to the place whence he came, into the wilderness as far as Baethel, as far as the place where his tent was before, between Baethel and Aggai,

3  And he returned by the way that he came, from the meridian into Bethel, all the way to the place where before he had pitched his tent, between Bethel and Hai.

13:4  unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first; and Abram called there on the name of YHWH.

4  to the place of the altar, which he built there at first, and Abram there called on the name of the Lord.

4  There, at the place of the altar he had made before, he again called upon the name of the Lord.

13:5  And Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.

5  And Lot who went out with Abram had sheep, and oxen, and tents.

5  But Lot also, who was with Abram, had flocks of sheep, and cattle, and tents.

13:6  And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together; for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.

6  And the land was not large enough for them to live together, because their possessions were great; and the land was not large enough for them to live together.

6  Neither was the land able to contain them, so that they might dwell together. Indeed, their substance was so great that they could not live in common.

13:7  And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle. And the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelt then in the land.

13:8  And Abram said unto Lot: 'Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we are brethren.

8  Therefore, Abram said to Lot: “I ask you, let there be no quarrel between me and you, and between my shepherds and your shepherds. For we are brothers.

13:9  Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me; if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou take the right hand, then I will go to the left.'

9  Behold, the entire land is before your eyes. Withdraw from me, I beg you. If you will go to the left, I will take the right. If you choose the right, I will pass to the left.”

13:10  And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before YHWH destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of the YHWH, like the land of Egypt, as thou goest unto Zoar.

10  And Lot having lifted up his eyes, observed all the country round about Jordan, that it was all watered, before God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrha, as the garden of the Lord, and as the land of Egypt, until thou come to Zogora.

10  And so Lot, lifting up his eyes, saw all the region around the Jordan, which was thoroughly irrigated, before the Lord overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. It was like the Paradise of the Lord, and it was like Egypt, approaching toward Zoar.

13:11  So Lot chose him all the plain of the Jordan; and Lot journeyed east; and they separated themselves the one from the other.

11  And Lot chose for himself all the country round Jordan, and Lot went from the east, and they were separated each from his brother. And Abram dwelt in the land of Chanaan.

11  Then Lot chose for himself all the land of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east; thus they separated one brother from the other.

13:12  Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the Plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom.

12  And Lot dwelt in a city of the neighbouring people, and pitched his tent in Sodom.

13:13  Now the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners against YHWH exceedingly.

13  But the men of Sodom were evil, and exceedingly sinful before God.

13:14  And YHWH said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him: 'Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art, northward and southward and eastward and westward;

14  And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot was divided from him: “Lift up your eyes, and gaze out from the place where you are now, to the north and to the meridian, to the east and to the west.

13:15  for all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.

15  All the land that you see, I will give to you, and to your offspring even forever.

13:16  And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth; so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

16  And I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth. If any man is able to number the dust of the earth, he will be able to number your offspring as well.

13:17  Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for unto thee will I give it.'

17  Arise and traverse the land, both in the length of it and in the breadth; for to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.

17  Arise and walk through the land in its length, and breadth. For I will give it to you.”

13:18  And Abram moved his tent, and came and dwelt by the terebinths of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built there an altar unto YHWH.

18  Therefore, moving his tent, Abram went and dwelt by the steep valley of Mamre, which is in Hebron. And he built an altar there to the Lord.

18  Then Abram removed his tent and came and dwelt by the oak of Mamre which is in Hebron, and built there an altar to the LORD

14:1  And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim,

1  Now it happened in that time that Amraphel, king of Shinar, and Arioch, king of Pontus, and Chedorlaomer, king of the Elamites, and Tidal, king of the Nations,

14:2  that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela--the same is Zoar.

2  made war with Balla king of Sodom, and with Barsa king of Gomorrha, and with Sennaar, king of Adama, and with Symobor king of Seboim and the king of Balac, this is Segor.

2  went to war against Bera, king of Sodom, and against Birsha, king of Gomorrah, and against Shinab, king of Admah, and against Shemeber, king of Zeboiim, and against the king of Bela, that is Zoar.

14:3  All these came as allies unto the vale of Siddim--the same is the Salt Sea.

3  All of these joined together in the valley of Siddim, which is the Salt Sea.

14:4  Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

4  For they had served Chedorlaomer for twelve years, and in the thirteenth year they withdrew from him.

14:5  And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaim in Ashteroth- karnaim, and the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim,

5  Therefore, in the fourteenth year, Chedorlaomer arrived, and the kings who were with him. And they struck the Rephaim at Ashteroth of the two horns, and the Zuzim with them, and the Emim at Shaveh-Kiriathaim.

14:6  and the Horites in their mount Seir, unto El-paran, which is by the wilderness.

6  And the Chorrhaeans in the mountains of Seir, to the turpentine tree of Pharan, which is in the desert.

14:7  And they turned back, and came to En-mishpat--the same is Kadesh--and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazazon-tamar.

7  And having turned back they came to the well of judgement; this is Cades, and they cut in pieces all the princes of Amalec, and the Amorites dwelling in Asasonthamar.

7  And they returned and arrived at the fountain of Mishpat, which is Kadesh. And they struck the entire region of the Amalekites, and the Amorites who dwelt in Hazazontamar.

14:8  And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela--the same is Zoar; and they set the battle in array against them in the vale of Siddim;

8  And the king of Sodom went out, and the king of Gomorrha, and king of Adama, and king of Seboim, and king of Balac, this is Segor, and they set themselves in array against them for war in the salt valley,

14:9  against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings against the five.

14:10  Now the vale of Siddim was full of slime pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell there, and they that remained fled to the mountain.

14:11  And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way.

11  Then they took all the substance of the Sodomites and the Gomorrahites, and all that pertained to food, and they went away,

11  And the raiders took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way.

14:12  And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

12  along with both Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, who lived in Sodom, and his substance.

14:13  And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew--now he dwelt by the terebinths of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner; and these were confederate with Abram.

13  And behold, one who had escaped reported it to Abram the Hebrew, who lived in the steep valley of Mamre the Amorite, who was the brother of Eshcol, and the brother of Aner. For these had formed an agreement with Abram.

14:14  And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued as far as Dan.

14  And Abram having heard that Lot his nephew had been taken captive, numbered his own home-born servants three hundred and eighteen, and pursued after them to Dan.

14  When Abram had heard this, namely, that his brother Lot had been taken captive, he numbered three hundred and eighteen of his own armed men and he went in pursuit all the way to Dan.

14:15  And he divided himself against them by night, he and his servants, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.

15  And he came upon them by night, he and his servants, and he smote them and pursued them as far as Choba, which is on the left of Damascus.

15  And dividing his company, he rushed upon them in the night. And he struck them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.

14:16  And he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.

16  And he recovered all the cavalry of Sodom, and he recovered Lot his nephew, and all his possessions, and the women and the people.

14:17  And the king of Sodom went out to meet him, after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, at the vale of Shaveh--the same is the King's Vale.

14:18  And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine; and he was priest of God the Most High.

18  Then in truth, Melchizedek, the king of Salem, brought forth bread and wine, for he was a priest of the Most High God;

14:19  And he blessed him, and said: 'Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth;

19  he blessed him, and he said: “Blessed be Abram by the Most High God, who created heaven and earth.

14:20  and blessed be God the Most High, who hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand.' And he gave him a tenth of all.

14:21  And the king of Sodom said unto Abram: 'Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.'

21  Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me these souls, and take the rest for yourself.”

14:22  And Abram said to the king of Sodom: 'I have lifted up my hand unto YHWH, God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth,

22  And he responded to him: “I lift up my hand to the Lord God, the Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth,

14:23  that I will not take a thread nor a shoe-latchet nor aught that is thine, lest thou shouldest say: I have made Abram rich;
