1  The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.

1  THE VISION WHICH ESAIAS SON OF AMOS SAW AGAINST BABYLON.

1  THE prophecy concerning the fall of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.

2  Set ye up an ensign upon the high mountain, lift up the voice unto them, wave the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles.

2  Lift up a standard on the mountain of the plain, exalt the voice to them, beckon with the hand, open the gates, ye rulers.

2  Over the foggy mountain lift up a sign! Raise the voice, lift up the hand, and let the rulers enter through the gates!

3  I have commanded My consecrated ones, yea, I have called My mighty ones for mine anger, even My proudly exulting ones.

3  I give command, and I bring them: giants are coming to fulfil my wrath, rejoicing at the same time and insulting.

3  In my wrath, I commanded my sanctified ones, and I called my strong ones, those who exult in my glory.

4  Hark, a tumult in the mountains, like as of a great people! Hark, the uproar of the kingdoms of the nations gathered together! YHWH of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.

4  A voice of many nations on the mountains, even like to that of many nations; a voice of kings and nations gathered together: the Lord of hosts has given command to a war-like nation,

4  On the mountains, there is the voice of a multitude, as if of a numerous people, a voice with the sound of kings, of nations gathered together. For the Lord of hosts has given orders to soldiers of war,

5  They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even YHWH, and the weapons of His indignation, to destroy the whole earth.

5  to come from a land afar off, from the utmost foundation of heaven; the Lord and his warriors are coming to destroy all the world.

5  to those who are arriving from a far off land, from the heights of the heavens. It is the Lord and the instruments of his fury, so that he may bring ruin to all the earth.

6  Howl ye; for the day of YHWH is at hand; as destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

6  Wail aloud! For the day of the Lord draws near! It will arrive like a devastation from the Lord.

6  Howl; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a plunder which is made suddenly.

7  Therefore shall all hands be slack, and every heart of man shall melt.

7  Therefore every hand shall become powerless, and every soul of man shall be dismayed.

7  Because of it, every hand will fail, and every heart of man will waste away and be crushed.

8  And they shall be affrighted; pangs and throes shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman in travail; they shall look aghast one at another; their faces shall be faces of flame.

8  The elders shall be troubled, and pangs shall seize them, as of a woman in travail: and they shall mourn one to another, and shall be amazed, and shall change their countenance as a flame.

8  Writhing and pain will seize them. They will be in pain, like a woman in labor. Each one will appear stupefied to his neighbor. Their countenances will be like faces which have been burned up.

9  Behold, the day of YHWH cometh, cruel, and full of wrath and fierce anger; to make the earth a desolation, and to destroy the sinners thereof out of it,

9  For behold! the day of the Lord is coming which cannot be escaped, a day of wrath and anger, to make the world desolate, and to destroy sinners out of it.

9  Behold, the day of the Lord approaches: a cruel day, full of indignation and wrath and fury, which will place the earth in solitude and crush the sinners from it.

10  For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light; the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

10  For the stars of the heavens, in their splendor, will not display their light. The sun will be obscured at its rising, and the moon will not shine in her brightness.

11  And I will visit upon the world their evil, and upon the wicked their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the tyrants.

11  And I will command evils for the whole world, and will visit their sins on the ungodly: and I will destroy the pride of transgressors, and will bring low the pride of the haughty.

11  And I will act against the evils of the world, and against the impious for their iniquity. And I will cause the pride of the unfaithful to cease, and I will bring down the arrogance of the strong.

12  I will make man more rare than fine gold, even man than the pure gold of Ophir.

12  And they that are left shall be more precious than gold tried in the fire; and a man shall be more precious than the stone that is in Suphir.

12  A man will be more precious than gold, and mankind will become like pure refined gold.

13  Therefore I will make the heavens to tremble, and the earth shall be shaken out of her place, for the wrath of YHWH of hosts, and for the day of His fierce anger.

13  For the heaven shall be enraged, and the earth shall be shaken from her foundation, because of the fierce anger of the Lord of hosts, in the day in which his wrath shall come on.

13  For this purpose, I will stir up heaven, and the earth will be moved from its place, because of the indignation of the Lord of hosts, because of the day of his furious wrath.

14  And it shall come to pass, that as the chased gazelle, and as sheep that no man gathereth, they shall turn every man to his own people, and shall flee every man to his own land.

14  And they will be like a doe fleeing away, or like sheep; and there will be no one who may gather them together. Each one will turn to his own people, and every one will flee to his own land.

15  Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is caught shall fall by the sword.

15  For whosoever shall be taken shall be overcome; and they that are gathered together shall fall by the sword.

15  All who are found will be killed, and all who are caught unaware will fall by the sword.

16  Their babes also shall be dashed in pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.

16  And they shall dash their children before their eyes; and they shall spoil their houses, and shall take their wives.

16  Their infants will be thrown down violently before their eyes. Their houses will be plundered, and their wives will be violated.

17  Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, who shall not regard silver, and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.

18  And their bows shall dash the young men in pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children.

18  They shall break the bows of the young men; and they shall have no mercy on your children; nor shall their eyes spare thy children.

18  Instead, with their arrows, they will put the little children to death, and they will take no pity on breastfeeding women, and their eye will not spare their children.

19  And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldeans' pride, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.

19  And then Babylon, the glorious one among kingdoms, that famous pride of the Chaldeans, will be destroyed, even as the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.

20  It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation; neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there.

20  It will not be inhabited, even unto the end, and it will not be reestablished, even from generation to generation. The Arab will not pitch his tents there, nor will the shepherds take rest there.

21  But wild-cats shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of ferrets; and ostriches shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there.

21  But wild beasts shall rest there; and the houses shall be filled with howling; and monsters shall rest there, and devils shall dance there,

21  Instead, the wild beasts will rest there, and their houses will be filled with serpents, and ostriches will live there, and the hairy ones will leap about there.

22  And jackals shall howl in their castles, and wild-dogs in the pleasant palaces; and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.

22  And the tawny owls will answer one another there, in its buildings, and the Sirens in its shrines of pleasure.

14:1  For YHWH will have compassion on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land; and the stranger shall join himself with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.

1  And the Lord will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and they shall rest on their land: and the stranger shall be added to them, yea, shall be added to the house of Jacob.

1  Her time is drawing near, and her days will not be prolonged. For the Lord will take pity on Jacob, and he will still choose from Israel, and he will cause them to rest upon their own soil. And the new arrival will be joined to them, and he will adhere to the house of Jacob.

14:2  And the peoples shall take them, and bring them to their place; and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of YHWH for servants and for handmaids; and they shall take them captive, whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors.

2  And the Gentiles shall take them, and bring them into their place: and they shall inherit them, and they shall be multiplied upon the land for servants and handmaidens: and they that took them captives shall become captives to them; and they that had lordship over them shall be under their rule.

2  And the people will take them, and lead them to their place. And the house of Israel will possess them, in the land of the Lord, as men and women servants. And they will take captive those who had taken them captive. And they will subjugate their oppressors.

14:3  And it shall come to pass in the day that YHWH shall give thee rest from thy travail, and from thy trouble, and from the hard service wherein thou wast made to serve,

3  And this shall be in that day: when God will have given you rest from your labor, and from your oppression, and from the difficult servitude under which you served before,

14:4  that thou shalt take up this parable against the king of Babylon, and say: How hath the oppressor ceased! the exactress of gold ceased!

4  you will accept this parable against the king of Babylon, and you will say: “How is it that the oppressor has ceased, along with his tribute?

14:5  YHWH hath broken the staff of the wicked, the sceptre of the rulers,

5  The Lord has broken the yoke of sinners, the yoke of princes.

5  The Lord has crushed the staff of the impious, the scepter of despots,

14:6  That smote the peoples in wrath with an incessant stroke, that ruled the nations in anger, with a persecution that none restrained.

6  Having smitten a nation in wrath, with an incurable plague, smiting a nation with a wrathful plague, which spared them not, he rested in quiet.

6  which struck the people in wrath with an incurable wound, which subjugated the nations in fury, which persecuted with cruelty.

14:7  The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet; they break forth into singing.

7  All the earth cries aloud with joy

7  All the earth has become quiet and still; it has been gladdened and has rejoiced.

14:8  Yea, the cypresses rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon: 'Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.'

8  the trees also of Libanus rejoice against thee, and the cedar of Libanus, saying, From the time that thou hast been laid low, no one has come up to cut us down.

8  The evergreens, too, have rejoiced over you, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying: ‘Since you have slept, no one has ascended who would cut us down.’

14:9  The nether-world from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming; the shades are stirred up for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; all the kings of the nations are raised up from their thrones.

9  Hell below was stirred up to meet you at your advent; it has awakened the giants for you. All the leaders of the earth have risen from their thrones, all the leaders among the nations.”

9  Sheol beneath is murmuring at your coming; it stirs up against you all the mighty men, even all the rulers of the earth whom you overthrew from their thrones.

14:10  All they do answer and say unto thee: 'Art thou also become weak as we? Art thou become like unto us?

10  All shall answer and say to thee, Thou also hast been taken, even as we; and thou art numbered amongst us.

10  Everyone will respond and will say to you: “Now you are wounded, just as we were; you have become like us.

14:11  Thy pomp is brought down to the nether-world, and the noise of thy psalteries; the maggot is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.'

11  Your arrogance has been dragged down to Hell. Your body has fallen dead. The moths will be strewn beneath you, and the worms will be your covering.

14:12  How art thou fallen from heaven, O day-star, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, that didst cast lots over the nations!

12  How is it that you have fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, who used to rise like the sun? How is it that you have fallen to the earth, you who wounded the peoples?

14:13  And thou saidst in thy heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, above the stars of God will I exalt my throne, and I will sit upon the mount of meeting, in the uttermost parts of the north;

14:14  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High.'

14  I will go up above the clouds: I will be like the Most High.

14:15  Yet thou shalt be brought down to the nether-world, to the uttermost parts of the pit.

15  But now thou shalt go down to hell, even to the foundations of the earth.

14:16  They that saw thee do narrowly look upon thee, they gaze earnestly at thee: 'Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

16  They that see thee shall wonder at thee, and say, This is the man that troubled the earth, that made kings to shake;

16  Those who see you, will lean toward you, and will gaze upon you, saying: ‘Could this be the man who disturbed the earth, who shook kingdoms,

14:17  That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?'

17  that made the whole world desolate, and destroyed its cities; he loosed not those who were in captivity.

17  who made the world into a desert and destroyed its cities, who would not even open a prison for his prisoners?’ ”

14:18  All the kings of the nations, all of them, sleep in glory, every one in his own house.

14:19  But thou art cast forth away from thy grave like an abhorred offshoot, in the raiment of the slain, that are thrust through with the sword, that go down to the pavement of the pit, as a carcass trodden under foot.

19  But thou shalt be cast forth on the mountains, as a loathed carcase, with many dead who have been pierced with swords, going down to the grave.

19  But you have been rejected from your grave, like a useless polluted plant, and you have been bound up with those who were slain by the sword, and who descended to the bottom of the pit, like a rotting carcass.

14:20  Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, thou hast slain thy people; the seed of evil- doers shall not be named for ever.

20  You will not be associated with them, even in the grave. For you have destroyed your own land; you have slain your own people. The offspring of the wicked ones will not be called upon for eternity.

14:21  Prepare ye slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they rise not up, and possess the earth, and fill the face of the world with cities.

21  Prepare thy children to be slain for the sins of their father; that they arise not, and inherit the earth, nor fill the earth with wars.

21  Prepare his sons for the slaughter, according to the iniquity of their fathers. They will not rise up, nor inherit the earth, nor fill the face of the world with cities.

14:22  And I will rise up against them, saith YHWH of hosts, and cut off from Babylon name and remnant, and offshoot and offspring, saith the YHWH.

22  But I will rise up against them, says the Lord of hosts. And I will perish the name of Babylon and its remnants: both the plant and its progeny, says the Lord.

22  For I will rise up against them, says the LORD of hosts, and will cut off from Babylon the name, its offspring, the family, and its generation, says the LORD.

14:23  I will also make it a possession for the bittern, and pools of water; and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith YHWH of hosts.

23  And I will make the region of Babylon desert, so that hedgehogs shall dwell there, and it shall come to nothing: and I will make it a pit of clay for destruction.

23  And I will appoint it as a possession for the hedgehog, with swamps of water. And I will sweep it out and wear it away with a brush, says the Lord of hosts.

14:24  YHWH of hosts hath sworn, saying: Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand,

24  Thus saith the Lord of hosts, As I have said, so it shall be: and as I have purposed, so the matter shall remain

24  The Lord of hosts has sworn, saying: Surely, just as I have considered it, so shall it be, and in the same manner as I have drawn it through my mind,

14:25  That I will break Asshur in My land, and upon My mountains tread him under foot; then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulder.

25  even to destroy the Assyrians upon my land, and upon my mountains: and they shall be for trampling; and their yoke shall be taken away from them, and their glory shall be taken away from their shoulders.

25  so shall it occur. So shall I crush the Assyrian in my land, and I will trample him upon my mountains, and his yoke will be taken away from them, and his burden will be removed from their shoulder.

14:26  This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth; and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.

26  This is the plan that I have decided, concerning the entire earth, and this is the hand which is extended over all the nations.

26  This is the end that is purposed against all the earth; and this is the land that is stretched out against all the nations.

14:27  For YHWH of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? And His hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

27  For what the Holy God has purposed, who shall frustrate? and who shall turn back his uplifted hand?

27  For the Lord of hosts has decreed it, and who is able to weaken it? And his hand is extended, so who can avert it?

14:28  In the year that king Ahaz died was this burden.

28  The conquest of Philistia. In the year that King Ahaz died, came this burden.

14:29  Rejoice not, O Philistia, all of thee, because the rod that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent's root shall come forth a basilisk, and his fruit shall be a flying serpent.

29  Rejoice not, all ye Philistines, because the yoke of him that smote you is broken: for out of the seed of the serpent shall come forth the young asps, and their young shall come forth flying serpents,

29  You should not rejoice, all you of Philistia, that the rod of him who struck you has been crushed. For from the root of the serpent will go forth a king snake, and his offspring will engulf that which flies.

14:30  And the first-born of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in safety; and I will kill thy root with famine, and thy remnant shall be slain.

30  And the poor shall be fed by him, and poor men shall rest in peace: but he shall destroy thy seed with hunger, and shall destroy thy remnant.

30  And the firstborn of the poor will be pastured, and the poor will rest in faithfulness. And I will cause your root to pass away by famine, and I will put to death your remnant.

14:31  Howl, O gate; cry, O city; melt away, O Philistia, all of thee; for there cometh a smoke out of the north, and there is no straggler in his ranks.

31  Howl, ye gates of cities; let the cities be troubled and cry, even all the Philistines: for smoke is coming from the north, and there is no possibility of living.

14:32  What then shall one answer the messengers of the nation? That YHWH hath founded Zion, and in her shall the afflicted of His people take refuge.

32  And what shall the kings of the nations answer? That the Lord has founded Sion, and by him the poor of the people shall be saved.

32  And what will be the response to this news among the nations? It will be that the Lord has established Zion, and that the poor of his people will hope in him.

15:1  The burden of Moab. For in the night that Ar of Moab is laid waste, he is brought to ruin; for in the night that Kir of Moab is laid waste, he is brought to ruin.

1  THE WORD AGAINST THE LAND OF MOAB. By night the land of Moab shall be destroyed; for by night the wall of the land of Moab shall be destroyed.

1  THE prophecy concerning the fall of Moab. Because in the night the city of Moab is plundered and brought to silence; because in the night the defenses of Moab are despoiled and brought to silence;

15:2  He is gone up to Baith, and to Dibon, to the high places, to weep; upon Nebo, and upon Medeba, Moab howleth; on all their heads is baldness, every beard is shaven.

2  Grieve for yourselves; for even Debon, where your altar is, shall be destroyed: thither shall ye go up to weep, over Nabau of the land of Moab: howl ye: baldness shall be on every head, and all arms shall be wounded.

2  The house has ascended with Dibon to the heights, in mourning over Nebo and over Medeba. Moab has wailed. There will be baldness on all of their heads, and every beard will be shaven.

15:3  In their streets they gird themselves with sackcloth; on their housetops, and in their broad places, every one howleth, weeping profusely.

3  Gird yourselves with sackcloth in her streets: and lament upon her roofs, and in her streets, and in her ways; howl all of you with weeping.

3  At their crossroads, they have been wrapped with sackcloth. On their rooftops and in their streets, everyone descends, wailing and weeping.

15:4  And Heshbon crieth out, and Elealeh; their voice is heard even unto Jahaz; therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud; his soul is faint within him.

4  For Esebon and Eleale have cried: their voice was heard to Jassa: therefore the loins of the region of Moab cry aloud; her soul shall know.

4  Heshbon will cry out with Elealeh. Their voice has been heard as far as Jahaz. Over this, the well-equipped men of Moab wail; each soul will wail to itself.

15:5  My heart crieth out for Moab; her fugitives reach unto Zoar, a heifer of three years old; for by the ascent of Luhith with weeping they go up; for in the way of Horonaim they raise up a cry of destruction.

5  The heart of the region of Moab cries within her to Segor; for it is as a heifer of three years old: and on the ascent of Luith they shall go up to thee weeping by the way of Aroniim: she cries, Destruction, and trembling.

5  My heart will cry out to Moab; its bars will cry out even to Zoar, like a three-year-old calf. For they will ascend weeping, by way of the ascent of Luhith. And along the way of Horonaim, they will lift up a cry of contrition.

15:6  For the Waters of Nimrim shall be desolate; for the grass is withered away, the herbage faileth, there is no green thing.

6  The water of Nemerim shall be desolate, and the grass thereof shall fail: for there shall be no green grass.

6  For the waters of Nimrim will be desolate, because the plants have withered, and the seedling has failed, and all the greenery has passed away.

15:7  Therefore the abundance they have gotten, and that which they have laid up, shall they carry away to the brook of the willows.

7  Shall Moab even thus be delivered? for I will bring the Arabians upon the valley, and they shall take it.

7  This is in accord with the magnitude of their works and of their visitation. They will lead them to the torrent of the willows.

15:8  For the cry is gone round about the borders of Moab; the howling thereof unto Eglaim, and the howling thereof unto Beer-elim.

8  For the cry has reached the border of the region of Moab, even of Agalim; and her howling has gone as far as the well of Ælim.

8  For an outcry has circulated along the border of Moab; its wailing even to Eglaim, and its clamor even to the well of Elim.

15:9  For the waters of Dimon are full of blood; for I will bring yet more upon Dimon, a lion upon him that escapeth of Moab, and upon the remnant of the land.

9  And the water of Dimon shall be filled with blood: for I will bring Arabians upon Dimon, and I will take away the seed of Moab, and Ariel, and the remnant of Adama.

9  Because the waters of Dibon have been filled with blood, I will place even more upon Dibon: those from Moab who flee the lion, and the survivors of the earth.

16:1  Send ye the lambs for the ruler of the land from the crags that are toward the wilderness, unto the mount of the daughter of Zion.

1  I will send as it were reptiles on the land: is not the mount of the daughter of Sion a desolate rock?

1  THE prophecy concerning the rest of the land. I will send the son of the ruler of the land from the rock city of the wilderness, to the mount of the daughter of Zion.

16:2  For it shall be that, as wandering birds, as a scattered nest, so shall the daughters of Moab be at the fords of Arnon.

2  For thou shalt be as a young bird taken away from a bird that has flown: even thou shalt be so, daughter of Moab: and then do thou, O Arnon,

2  And this shall be: like a bird fleeing away, and like fledglings flying from the nest, so will the daughters of Moab be at the passage of Arnon.

16:3  'Give counsel, execute justice; make thy shadow as the night in the midst of the noonday; hide the outcasts; betray not the fugitive.

3  take farther counsel, and continually make thou a shelter from grief: they flee in darkness at mid-day; they are amazed; be not thou led captive.

3  Form a plan. Call a council. Let your shadow be as if it were night, even at midday. Conceal the fugitives, and do not betray the wanderers.

16:4  Let mine outcasts dwell with thee; as for Moab, be thou a covert to him from the face of the spoiler.' For the extortion is at an end, spoiling ceaseth, they that trampled down are consumed out of the land;

4  The fugitives of Moab shall sojourn with thee; they shall be to you a shelter from the face of the pursuer: for thine alliance has been taken away, and the oppressing ruler has perished from off the earth.

4  My fugitives will live with you. Become a hiding place, O Moab, from the face of the destroyer. For the dust is at its end; the miserable one has been consumed. He who trampled the earth has failed.

16:5  And a throne is established through mercy, and there sitteth thereon in truth, in the tent of David, one that judgeth, and seeketh justice, and is ready in righteousness.

5  And a throne will be prepared in mercy, and One shall sit upon it in truth, in the tabernacle of David, judging and seeking judgment, and quickly repaying what is just.

5  In mercy shall a throne be established, and he shall sit upon it, in truth in the tabernacle of David, a judge who seeks justice and hastens righteousness.

16:6  We have heard of the pride of Moab; he is very proud; even of his haughtiness, and his pride, and his arrogancy, his ill-founded boastings.

16:7  Therefore shall Moab wail for Moab, every one shall wail; for the sweet cakes of Kir-hareseth shall ye mourn, sorely stricken.

7  Moab shall howl; for all shall howl in the land of Moab: but thou shalt care for them that dwell in Seth, and thou shalt not be ashamed.

7  For this reason, Moab will wail to Moab; each one will wail. Speak of their wounds to those who rejoice upon the brick walls.

16:8  For the fields of Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah, whose choice plants did overcome the lords of nations; they reached even unto Jazer, they wandered into the wilderness; her branches were spread abroad, they passed over the sea.

8  The plains of Esebon shall mourn, the vine of Sebama: swallowing up the nations, trample ye her vines, even to Jazer: ye shall not come together; wander ye in the desert: they that were sent are deserted, for they have gone over to the sea.

8  For the suburbs of Heshbon are deserted, and the lords of the Gentiles have cut down the vineyard of Sibmah. Its vines have arrived even at Jazer. They have wandered in the desert. Its seedlings have been abandoned. They have crossed over the sea.

16:9  Therefore I will weep with the weeping of Jazer for the vine of Sibmah; I will water thee with my tears, O Heshbon, and Elealeh; for upon thy summer fruits and upon thy harvest the battle shout is fallen.

16:10  And gladness and joy are taken away out of the fruitful field; and in the vineyards there shall be no singing, neither shall there be shouting; no treader shall tread out wine in the presses; I have made the vintage shout to cease.

10  And gladness and rejoicing shall be taken away from the vineyards; and they shall not at all tread wine into the vats; for the vintage has ceased.

10  And so, rejoicing and exultation will be taken away from Carmel, and there will be no jubilation or exultation in the vineyards. He who was accustomed to tread will not tread out the wine in the winepress. I have taken away the sound of those who tread.

16:11  Wherefore my heart moaneth like a harp for Moab, and mine inward parts for Kir-heres.

11  Therefore my belly shall sound as a harp for Moab, and thou hast repaired my inward parts as a wall.

11  Over this, my heart will resonate like a harp for Moab, and my inner most being for the brick wall.

16:12  And it shall come to pass, when it is seen that Moab hath wearied himself upon the high place, that he shall come to his sanctuary to pray; but he shall not prevail

12  And it shall be to thy shame, (for Moab is wearied at the altars,) that he shall go in to the idols thereof to pray, but they shall not be at all able to deliver him.

12  And this shall be: when it is seen that Moab has struggled upon his high places, he will enter his holy places to pray, but he will not prevail.

16:13  This is the word that YHWH spoke concerning Moab in time past.

16:14  But now YHWH hath spoken, saying: 'Within three years, as the years of a hireling, and the glory of Moab shall wax contemptible for all his great multitude; and the remnant shall be very small and without strength.'

14  And now I say, in three years, of the years of an hireling, the glory of Moab shall be dishonoured with all his great wealth; and he shall be left few in number, and not honoured.

14  And now the Lord has spoken, saying: In three years, like the years of a hired hand, the glory of Moab concerning the entire multitude of the people will be taken away, and what is left behind will be small and weak and not so numerous.

17:1  The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.

1  THE WORD AGAINST DAMASCUS. Behold, Damascus shall be taken away from among cities, and shall become a ruin;

17:2  The cities of Aroer are forsaken; they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.

2  abandoned for ever, to be a fold and resting-place for flocks, and there shall be none to go after them.

2  The cities in ruin will be left for the flocks, and they will take rest there, and there will be no one who may terrify them.

17:3  The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus; and the remnant of Aram shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith YHWH of hosts.

3  And she shall no longer be a strong place for Ephraim to flee to, and there shall no longer be a kingdom in Damascus, or a remnant of Syrians; for thou art no better than the children of Israel, even than their glory; thus saith the Lord of hosts.

17:4  And it shall come to pass in that day, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean.

4  There shall be in that day a failure of the glory of Jacob, and the riches of his glory shall be shaken.

4  And this shall be in that day: the glory of Jacob will be thinned, and the fatness of his flesh will be reduced.

17:5  And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the standing corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm; yea, it shall be as when one gleaneth ears in the valley of Rephaim.

5  And it shall be as if one should gather standing corn, and reap the grain of the ears; and it shall be as if one should gather ears in a rich valley;

5  And it shall be like the gathering of the harvest which remains, and his arm will pick the ears of grain. And it shall be like a search for grain in the valley of Rephaim.

17:6  Yet there shall be left therein gleanings, as at the beating of an olive-tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the branches of the fruitful tree, saith YHWH, the God of Israel.

6  And what is left behind in it will be like one cluster of grapes, or like a shaken olive tree with two or three olives at the top of a branch, or like four or five olives at the top of a tree, says the Lord God of Israel.

17:7  In that day shall a man regard his Maker, and his eyes shall look to the Holy One of Israel.

7  In that day a man shall trust in him that made him, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel.

17:8  And he shall not regard the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall he look to that which his fingers have made, either the Asherim, or the sun-images.

8  And they shall not at all trust in their altars, nor in the works of their hands, which their fingers made; and they shall not look to the trees, nor to their abominations.

8  And he will not bow before the altars that his hands have made. And he will not consider the things that his fingers have made, the sacred groves and the shrines.

17:9  In that day shall his strong cities be as the forsaken places, which were forsaken from before the children of Israel, after the manner of woods and lofty forests; and it shall be a desolation.

9  In that day thy cities shall be deserted, as the Amorites and the Evaeans deserted theirs, because the of children of Israel; and they shall be desolate.

9  In that day, his strong cities will be abandoned, like the plows and the grain fields which were left behind before the face of the sons of Israel, and you shall be deserted.

17:10  For thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and thou hast not been mindful of the Rock of thy stronghold; therefore thou didst plant plants of pleasantness, and didst set it with slips of a stranger;

10  Because thou hast forsaken God thy Saviour, and hast not been mindful of the Lord thy helper; therefore shalt thou plant a false plant, and a false seed.

10  For you have forgotten God your Savior, and you have not remembered your strong Helper. Because of this, you will plant trustworthy plants, but you will sow a foreign seed.

17:11  In the day of thy planting thou didst make it to grow, and in the morning thou didst make thy seed to blossom--a heap of boughs in the day of grief and of desperate pain.

11  In the day wherein thou shalt plant thou shalt be deceived; but if thou sow in the morning, the seed shall spring up for a crop in the day wherein thou shalt obtain an inheritance, and as a man’s father, thou shalt obtain an inheritance for thy sons.

17:12  Ah, the uproar of many peoples, that roar like the roaring of the seas; and the rushing of nations, that rush like the rushing of mighty waters!

12  Woe to the multitude of many nations, as the swelling sea, so shall ye be confounded; and the force of many nations shall sound like water;

12  Woe to the armies of many people, which make a noise like the roaring of the seas! And to the rushing of nations, that rush like the rushing of mighty waters!

17:13  The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters; but He shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like the whirling dust before the storm.

13  He shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off and shall be chased like the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like dry grass before the whirlwind.

17:14  At eventide behold terror; and before the morning they are not. This is the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us.

14  In the time of the evening, behold: there will be a disturbance. When it is early morning, he will not remain. This is the portion of those who have devastated us, and this is the lot of those who have plundered us.

18:1  Ah, land of the buzzing of wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia;

1  Woe to you, ye wings of the land of ships, beyond the rivers of Ethiopia.

1  Woe to the land, that winged cymbal, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia,

18:2  That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of papyrus upon the waters! Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation tall and of glossy skin, to a people terrible from their beginning onward; a nation that is sturdy and treadeth down, whose land the rivers divide!

2  He sends messengers by the sea, and paper letters on the water: for swift messengers shall go to a lofty nation, and to a strange and harsh people. Who is beyond it? a nation not looked for, and trodden down.

18:3  All ye inhabitants of the world, and ye dwellers on the earth, when an ensign is lifted up on the mountains, see ye; and when the horn is blown, hear ye.

3  Now all the rivers of the land shall be inhabited as an inhabited country; their land shall be as when a signal is raised from a mountain; it shall be audible as the sound of a trumpet.

3  All inhabitants of the world, you who dwell upon the earth: when the sign will have been elevated on the mountains, you will see, and you will hear the blast of the trumpet.

18:4  For thus hath YHWH said unto me: I will hold Me still, and I will look on in My dwelling-place, like clear heat in sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.

4  For thus said the Lord to me, There shall be security in my city, as the light of noonday heat, and it shall be as a cloud of dew in the day of harvest.

4  For the Lord says this to me: I will be quiet, and I will consider in my place, as the light at midday is clear, and as a cloud of dew in the day of the harvest.

18:5  For before the harvest, when the blossom is over, and the bud becometh a ripening grape, He will cut off the sprigs with pruning-hooks, and the shoots will He take away and lop off.

5  Before the reaping time, when the flower has been completely formed, and the unripe grape has put forth its flower and blossomed, then shall he take away the little clusters with pruning-hooks, and shall take away the small branches, and cut them off;

5  For before the harvest, all was flourishing. And it will spring forth with an untimely completion, and its little branches will be pruned with a curved blade. And what is left over will be cut away and shaken off.

18:6  They shall be left together unto the ravenous birds of the mountains, and to the beasts of the earth; and the ravenous birds shall summer upon them, and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them.

6  And he shall leave them together to the birds of the sky, and to the wild beasts of the earth: and the fowls of the sky shall be gathered upon them, and all the beasts of the land shall come upon him.

6  And together they will be abandoned to the birds of the mountains and to the wild beasts of the earth. And the birds will be continuously on them in the summer, and all the wild beasts of the earth will winter over them.

18:7  In that time shall a present be brought unto YHWH of hosts of a people tall and of glossy skin, and from a people terrible from their beginning onward; a nation that is sturdy and treadeth down, whose land the rivers divide, to the place of the name of the YHWH of hosts, the mount Zion.

7  In that time, a gift will be carried to the Lord of hosts, from a people divided and torn apart, from a terrible people, after whom there has been no other, from an apprehensive nation, apprehensive and downtrodden, whose land the rivers have ruined, and it will be carried to the place of the name of the Lord of hosts, to mount Zion.

7  At that time presents shall be brought to the LORD of hosts from a people plundered and uprooted, whose strength was within him hitherto; from a people dishonored and trodden under foot, whose land the rivers have spoiled, to the place of the name of the LORD of hosts, even to mount Zion.

19:1  The burden of Egypt. Behold, YHWH rideth upon a swift cloud, and cometh unto Egypt; and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at His presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt within it.

1  THE VISION OF EGYPT. Behold, the Lord sits on a swift cloud, and shall come to Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and their heart shall faint within them.

1  THE prophecy concerning the fall of Egypt. Behold, the LORD is riding upon swift clouds, and comes into Egypt; and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and the heart of the Egyptians shall melt in the midst of it.

19:2  And I will spur Egypt against Egypt; and they shall fight every one against his brother, and everyone against his neighbour; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.

2  And the Egyptians shall be stirred up against the Egyptians: and a man shall fight against his brother, and a man against his neighbor, city against city, and law against law.

2  And I will cause Egyptian to rush against Egyptian. And they will fight: a man against his brother, and a man against his friend, city against city, kingdom against kingdom.

19:3  And the spirit of Egypt shall be made empty within it; and I will make void the counsel thereof; and they shall seek unto the idols, and to the whisperers, and to the ghosts, and to the familiar spirits.

3  And the spirit of the Egyptians shall be troubled within them; and I will frustrate their counsel: and they shall enquire of their gods and their images, and them that speak out of the earth, and them that have in them a divining spirit.

19:4  And I will give over the Egyptians into the hand of a cruel lord; and a fierce king shall rule over them, saith YHWH, YHWH of hosts.

4  And I will deliver Egypt into the hand of cruel masters, and a strong king will dominate them, says the Lord, the God of hosts.

19:5  And the waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be drained dry,

5  And the Egyptians shall drink the water that is by the sea, but the river shall fail, and be dried up.

19:6  And the rivers shall become foul; the streams of Egypt shall be minished and dried up; the reeds and flags shall wither.

6  And the streams shall fail, and the canals of the river; and every reservoir of water shall be dried up, in every marsh also of reed and papyrus.

19:7  The mosses by the Nile, by the brink of the Nile, and all that is sown by the Nile, shall become dry, be driven away, and be no more.

7  And all the green herbage round about the river, and everything sown by the side of the river, shall be blasted with the wind and dried up.

7  The channel of the river will be stripped down to its source, and everything irrigated by it will dry up and wither and be no more.

19:8  The fishers also shall lament, and all they that cast angle into the Nile shall mourn, and they that spread nets upon the waters shall languish.

8  And the fishermen shall groan, and all that cast a hook into the river shall groan; they also that cast nets, and the anglers shall mourn.

8  And the fishermen will grieve. And all who cast a hook into the river will mourn. And those who cast a net upon the surface of its waters will languish.

19:9  Moreover they that work in combed flax, and they that weave cotton, shall be ashamed.

9  And shame shall come upon them that work fine flax, and them that make fine linen.

9  Those who work with linen, combing and weaving fine textiles, will be confounded.

19:10  And her foundations shall be crushed, all they that make dams shall be grieved in soul.

10  And they that work at them shall be in pain, and all that make beer shall be grieved, and be pained in their souls.

10  And its irrigated places will begin to fail, with all those who make pools to take fish.

19:11  The princes of Zoan are utter fools; the wisest counsellors of Pharaoh are a senseless counsel; how can ye say unto Pharaoh: 'I am the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings'?

19:12  Where are they, then, thy wise men? And let them tell thee now; and let them know what YHWH of hosts hath purposed concerning Egypt.

12  Where are now thy wise men? and let them declare to thee, and say, What has the Lord of hosts purposed upon Egypt?

12  Where are your wisemen now? Let them announce it to you, and let them reveal what the Lord of hosts intends for Egypt.

19:13  The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of Noph are deceived; they have caused Egypt to go astray, that are the corner-stone of her tribes.

13  The princes of Tanis have failed, and the princes of Memphis are lifted up with pride, and they shall cause Egypt to wander by tribes.

13  The leaders of Tanis have become foolish. The leaders of Memphis have decayed. They have deceived Egypt, the corner of its people.

19:14  YHWH hath mingled within her a spirit of dizziness; and they have caused Egypt to stagger in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit.

14  For the Lord has prepared for them a spirit of error, and they have caused Egypt to err in all their works, as one staggers who is drunken and vomits also.

14  The Lord has mixed a spirit of giddiness into its midst. And they have caused Egypt to err in all its works, like a drunken man who staggers and vomits.

19:15  Neither shall there be for Egypt any work, which head or tail, palm-branch or rush, may do.

15  And there shall be no work to the Egyptians, which shall make head or tail, or beginning or end.

15  And there will be no work for Egypt that would produce a head or a tail, one who bows down or one who refrains from bowing down.

19:16  In that day shall Egypt be like unto women; and it shall tremble and fear because of the shaking of the hand of YHWH of hosts, which He shaketh over it.

19:17  And the land of Judah shall become a terror unto Egypt, whensoever one maketh mention thereof to it; it shall be afraid, because of the purpose of YHWH of hosts, which He purposeth against it.

19:18  In that day there shall be five cities in the land of Egypt that speak the language of Canaan, and swear to YHWH of hosts; one shall be called The city of destruction.

19:19  In that day shall there be an altar to YHWH in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the YHWH.

19  In that day, there will be an altar of the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt and a monument of the Lord beside its borders.

19:20  And it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto YHWH of hosts in the land of Egypt; for they shall cry unto the YHWH because of the oppressors, and He will send them a saviour, and a defender, who will deliver them.

20  This shall be a sign and a testimony to the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt. For they will cry out to the Lord before the face of the tribulation, and he will send them a savior and a defender who will free them.

19:21  And YHWH shall make Himself known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the YHWH in that day; yea, they shall worship with sacrifice and offering, and shall vow a vow unto the LORD, and shall perform it.

21  And the Lord shall be known to the Egyptians, and the Egyptians shall know the Lord in that day; and they shall offer sacrifices, and shall vow vows to the Lord, and pay them.

21  And the Lord will be acknowledged by Egypt, and the Egyptians will recognize the Lord in that day, and they will worship him with sacrifices and gifts. And they will make vows to the Lord, and they will fulfill them.

19:22  And YHWH will smite Egypt, smiting and healing; and they shall return unto the YHWH, and He will be entreated of them, and will heal them.

22  And the Lord shall smite the Egyptians with a stroke, and shall completely heal them: and they shall return to the Lord, and he shall hear them, and thoroughly heal them.

22  And the Lord will strike Egypt with a scourge, and he will heal them. And they will return to the Lord. And he will be placated toward them, and he will heal them.

19:23  In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria; and the Egyptians shall worship with the Assyrians.

19:24  In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth;

19:25  for that YHWH of hosts hath blessed him, saying: 'Blessed be Egypt My people and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel Mine inheritance.'

25  saying, Blessed be my people that is in Egypt, and that is among the Assyrians, and Israel mine inheritance.

25  which the Lord of hosts has blessed, saying: Blessed be my people of Egypt, and the work of my hands for the Assyrian, but Israel is my inheritance.

20:1  In the year that Tartan came into Ashdod, when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him, and he fought against Ashdod and took it;

1  In the year when Tanathan came to Azotus, when he was sent by Arna king of the Assyrians, and warred against Azotus, and took it;

1  In the year in which Tharthan entered into Ashdod, when Sargon, the king of the Assyrians, had sent him, and when he had fought against Ashdod and had captured it,

20:2  at that time YHWH spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying: 'Go, and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put thy shoe from off thy foot.' And he did so, walking naked and barefoot.

2  then the Lord spoke to Esaias the son of Amos, saying, Go and take the sackcloth off thy loins, and loose thy sandals from off thy feet, and do thus, going naked and barefoot.

2  in that same time, the Lord spoke by the hand of Isaiah, the son of Amoz, saying: “Go forth, and remove the sackcloth from your waist, and take your shoes from your feet.” And he did so, going out naked and barefoot.

20:3  And YHWH said: 'Like as My servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot to be for three years a sign and a wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia,

3  And the Lord said, As my servant Esaias has walked naked and barefoot three years, there shall be three years for signs and wonders to the Egyptians and Ethiopians;

20:4  so shall the king of Assyria lead away the captives of Egypt, and the exiles of Ethiopia, young and old, naked and barefoot, and with buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.

4  for thus shall the king of the Assyrians lead the captivity of Egypt and the Ethiopians, young men and old, naked and barefoot, having the shame of Egypt exposed.

4  so also will the king of the Assyrians force the captivity of Egypt, and the transmigration of Ethiopia: young and old, naked and barefoot, with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.

20:5  And they shall be dismayed and ashamed, because of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory.

5  And the Egyptians being defeated shall be ashamed of the Ethiopians, in whom they had trusted; for they were their glory.

5  And they will be afraid and confounded over Ethiopia, their hope, and Egypt, their glory.

20:6  And the inhabitant of this coast-land shall say in that day: Behold, such is our expectation, whither we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria; and how shall we escape?'

6  And they that dwell in this island shall say in that day, Behold, we trusted to flee to them for help, who could not save themselves from the king of the Assyrians: and how shall we be saved?

6  And in that day, the inhabitants of a certain island will say: “Behold, this was our hope, we fled to them for help, to free us from the face of the king of the Assyrians. And now, how will we be able to escape?”

21:1  The burden of the wilderness of the sea. As whirlwinds in the South sweeping on, it cometh from the wilderness, from a dreadful land.

21:2  A grievous vision is declared unto me: 'The treacherous dealer dealeth treacherously, and the spoiler spoileth. Go up, O Elam! besiege, O Media! All the sighing thereof have I made to cease.'

2  so a fearful and a grievous vision was declared to me: he that is treacherous deals treacherously, the transgressor transgresses. The Elamites are upon me, and the ambassadors of the Persians come against me: now will I groan and comfort myself.

2  A difficult vision has been announced to me: he who is unbelieving, he acts unfaithfully, and he who is a plunderer, he devastates. Ascend, O Elam! Lay siege, O Media! I have caused all its mourning to cease.

21:3  Therefore are my loins filled with convulsion; pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman in travail; I am bent so that I cannot hear; I am affrighted so that I cannot see.

3  Because of this, my lower back has been filled with pain, and anguish has possessed me, like the anguish of a woman in labor. I fell down when I heard it. I was disturbed when I saw it.

21:4  My heart is bewildered, terror hath overwhelmed me; the twilight that I longed for hath been turned for me into trembling.

4  My heart wanders, and transgression overwhelms me; my soul is occupied with fear.

4  My heart failed, pangs made me quake; the beauty of my pleasures has been turned into terror to me.

21:5  They prepare the table, they light the lamps, they eat, they drink--'Rise up, ye princes, anoint the shield.'

5  Prepare the table, eat, drink: arise, ye princes, and prepare your shields.

5  Prepare the table. Contemplate, from a place of observation, those who eat and drink. Rise up, you leaders! Take up the shield!

21:6  For thus hath YHWH said unto me: Go, set a watchman; let him declare what he seeth!

6  For thus said the Lord to me, Go and station a watchman for thyself, and declare whatever thou shalt see.

6  For the Lord has said this to me: “Go and station a watchman. And let him announce whatever he will see.”

21:7  And when he seeth a troop, horsemen by pairs, a troop of asses, a troop of camels, he shall hearken diligently with much heed.

7  And I saw two mounted horsemen, and a rider on an ass, and a rider on a camel.

7  And he saw a chariot with two horsemen, and a rider on an donkey, and a rider on a camel. And he considered them diligently, with an intense gaze.

21:8  And he cried as a lion: 'Upon the watch-tower, O Lord, I stand continually in the daytime, and I am set in my ward all the nights.'

21:9  And, behold, there came a troop of men, horsemen by pairs. And he spoke and said: 'Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the graven images of her gods are broken unto the ground.'

9  and, behold, he comes riding in a chariot and pair: and he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all her images and her idols have been crushed to the ground.

9  Behold, a certain man approaches, a man riding on a two-horse chariot.” And he responded, and he said: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon! And all its graven gods have been crushed into the earth!

21:10  O thou my threshing, and the winnowing of my floor, that which I have heard from YHWH of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.

10  Hear, ye that are left, and ye that are in pain, hear what things I have heard of the Lord of hosts which the God of Israel has declared to us.

21:11  The burden of Dumah. One calleth unto me out of Seir: 'Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?'

11  THE VISION OF IDUMEA. Call to me out of Seir; guard ye the bulwarks.

21:12  The watchman said: 'The morning cometh, and also the night--if ye will inquire, inquire ye; return, come.'

12  I watch in the morning and the night: if thou wouldest enquire, enquire, and dwell by me.

21:13  The burden upon Arabia. In the thickets in Arabia shall ye lodge, O ye caravans of Dedanites.

13  Thou mayest lodge in the forest in the evening, or in the way of Daedan.

13  The prophecy concerning Arabia. In the evening you shall lodge in the forest, in the highway of Dornim.

21:14  Unto him that is thirsty bring ye water! The inhabitants of the land of Tema did meet the fugitive with his bread.

14  Ye that dwell in the country of Thaeman, bring water to meet him that is thirsty;

21:15  For they fled away from the swords, from the drawn sword, and from the bent bow, and from the grievousness of war.

15  meet the fugitives with bread, because of the multitude of the slain, and because of the multitude of them that lose their way, and because of the multitude of swords, and because of the multitude of bent bows, and because of the multitude of them that have fallen in war.

15  For they are fleeing before the face of swords, before the face of a sword hanging over them, before the face of a bent bow, before the face of a grievous battle.

21:16  For thus hath YHWH said unto me: 'Within a year, according to the years of a hireling, and all the glory of Kedar shall fail;

16  For thus said the Lord to me, Yet a year, as the year of an hireling, and the glory of the sons of Kedar shall fail

16  For the Lord said this to me: “After one more year, just like one year for a hired hand, all the glory of Kedar will be taken away.

21:17  and the residue of the number of the archers, the mighty men of the children of Kedar, shall be diminished; for YHWH, the God of Israel, hath spoken it.'

17  and the remnant of the strong bows of the sons of Kedar shall be small: for the Lord God of Israel has spoken it.

17  And the remainder of the multitude of strong archers from the sons of Kedar will be few, for the Lord, the God of Israel, has spoken it.”

22:1  The burden concerning the Valley of Vision. What aileth thee now, that thou art wholly gone up to the housetops,

1  THE WORD OF THE VALLEY OF SION. What has happened to thee, that now ye are all gone up to the housetops which help you not?

1  The burden of the valley of vision. What does it mean to you, then, that each of you have even climbed to the rooftops?

22:2  Thou that art full of uproar, a tumultuous city, a joyous town? Thy slain are not slain with the sword, nor dead in battle.

2  The city is filled with shouting men: thy slain are not slain with swords, nor are thy dead those who have died in battle.

2  Filled with clamor, a busy city, an exultant city: your dead have not been slain by the sword, nor did they die in battle.

22:3  All thy rulers are fled together, without the bow they are bound; all that are found of thee are bound together, they are fled afar off.

3  All thy princes have fled, and thy captives are tightly bound, and the mighty men in thee have fled far away.

3  All your leaders have fled together, and they have been bound by hardship. All who were found were chained together. They have fled far away.

22:4  Therefore said I: 'Look away from me, I will weep bitterly; strain not to comfort me, for the destruction of the daughter of my people.'

4  Therefore I said, Let me alone, I will weep bitterly; labour not to comfort me for the breach of the daughter of my people.

4  For this reason, I said: “Depart from me. I will weep bitterly. Make no attempt to console me, over the devastation of the daughter of my people.”

22:5  For it is a day of trouble, and of trampling, and of perplexity, from YHWH, the GOD of hosts, in the Valley of Vision; Kir shouting, and Shoa at the mount.

5  For it is a day of trouble, and of destruction, and of treading down, and there is perplexity sent from the Lord of hosts: they wander in the valley of Sion; they wander from the least to the greatest on the mountains.

22:6  And Elam bore the quiver, with troops of men, even horsemen; and Kir uncovered the shield.

6  And the Elamites took their quivers, and there were men mounted on horses, and there was a gathering for battle.

6  And Elam took up the quiver and the chariot of the horseman; and he stripped the wall of the shield.

22:7  And it came to pass, when thy choicest valleys were full of chariots, and the horsemen set themselves in array at the gate,

7  And it shall be that thy choice valleys shall be filled with chariots, and horsemen shall block up thy gates.

7  And your elect valleys will be filled with chariots, and the horsemen will position themselves at the gates.

22:8  And the covering of Judah was laid bare, that thou didst look in that day to the armour in the house of the forest.

8  And they shall uncover the gates of Juda, and they shall look in that day on the choice houses of the city.

8  And the defenses of Judah shall be laid bare, and you shall see on that day the armour of the house of the forest.

22:9  And ye saw the breaches of the city of David, that they were many; and ye gathered together the waters of the lower pool.

9  And they shall uncover the secret places of the houses of the citadel of David: and they saw that they were many, and that one had turned the water of the old pool into the city;

22:10  And ye numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and ye broke down the houses to fortify the wall;

10  and that they had pulled down the houses of Jerusalem, to fortify the wall of the city.

10  And you have numbered the houses of Jerusalem. And you have destroyed the houses in order to fortify the wall.

22:11  ye made also a basin between the two walls for the water of the old pool--but ye looked not unto Him that had done this, neither had ye respect unto Him that fashioned it long ago.

11  And ye procured to yourselves water between the two walls within the ancient pool: but ye looked not to him that made it from the beginning, and regarded not him that created it.

11  And you have made a pit between two walls for the waters of the ancient fish-pool. But you have not gazed upward to him who made it, and you have not considered, even from a distance, its Maker.

22:12  And in that day did YHWH, the GOD of hosts, call to weeping, and to lamentation, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth;

12  And the Lord, the Lord of hosts, called in that day for weeping, and lamentation, and baldness, and for girding with sackcloth

22:13  And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine--'Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die!'

13  but they engaged in joy and gladness, slaying calves, and killing sheep, so as to eat flesh, and drink wine; saying, Let us eat and drink; for to-morrow we die.

13  But behold: gladness and rejoicing, the killing of calves and the slaughter of rams, the eating of meat and the drinking of wine: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we will die.”

22:14  And YHWH of hosts revealed Himself in mine ears: Surely this iniquity shall not be expiated by you till ye die, saith YHWH, the GOD of hosts.

14  And these things are revealed in the ears of the Lord of hosts: for this sin shall not be forgiven you, until ye die.

14  And it was revealed in my ears by the LORD of hosts, saying, Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you till you die, says the LORD God of hosts.

22:15  Thus saith YHWH, the GOD of hosts: Go, get thee unto this steward, even unto Shebna, who is over the house

15  Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts: Go forth and enter to him who lives in the tabernacle, to Shebna, who is in charge of the temple, and you shall say to him

22:16  What hast thou here, and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewed thee out here a sepulchre, thou that hewest thee out a sepulchre on high, and gravest a habitation for thyself in the rock?

16  “What are you here, or who are you claiming to be here? For you have hewn a sepulcher for yourself here. You have diligently hewn a memorial in a rock, as a tabernacle to yourself.

22:17  Behold, YHWH will hurl thee up and down with a man's throw; yea, He will wind thee round and round;

17  Behold now, the Lord of hosts casts forth and will utterly destroy such a man, and will take away thy robe and thy glorious crown,

17  Behold, O man, the LORD will surely cast you away, and will surely forsake you.

22:18  He will violently roll and toss thee like a ball into a large country; there shalt thou die, and there shall be the chariots of thy glory, thou shame of the lord's house.

18  He will crown you with a crown of tribulation. He will toss you like a ball into a broad and spacious land. There you will die, and there the chariot of your glory will be, for it is a shame to the house of your Lord.”

18  And he shall afflict you like the affliction of a company of soldiers besieged in a fortress from which there is no escape; there shall you die, and there the chariots of your glory shall be the shame of your master's house.

22:19  And I will thrust thee from thy post, and from thy station shalt thou be pulled down.

19  And thou shalt be removed from thy stewardship, and from thy place.

19  And I will expel you from your station, and I will depose you from your ministry.

22:20  And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah;

20  And this shall be in that day: I will call my servant Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah.

22:21  And I will clothe him with thy robe, and bind him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand; and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.

21  and I will put on him thy robe, and I will grant him thy crown with power, and I will give thy stewardship into his hands: and he shall be as a father to them that dwell in Jerusalem, and to them that dwell in Juda.

22:22  And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; and he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

22  And I will give him the glory of David; and he shall rule, and there shall be none to speak against him: and I will give him the key of the house of David upon his shoulder; and he shall open, and there shall be none to shut; and he shall shut, and there shall be none to open.

22  And I will place the key of the house of David upon his shoulder. And when he opens, no one will close. And when he closes, no one will open.

22:23  And I will fasten him as a peg in a sure place; and he shall be for a throne of honour to his father's house.

22:24  And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father's house, the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantity, from the vessels of cups even to all the vessels of flagons.

24  And every one that is glorious in the house of his father shall trust in him, from the least to the greatest; and they shall depend upon him in that day.

24  And they will suspend over him all the glory of his father’s house: various kinds of vessels and every little article, from the vessels of bowls even to every instrument of music.

22:25  In that day, saith YHWH of hosts, shall the peg that was fastened in a sure place give way; and it shall be hewn down, and fall, and the burden that was upon it shall be cut off; for the YHWH hath spoken it.

25  Thus saith the Lord of hosts, The man that is fastened in the sure place shall be removed and be taken away, and shall fall; and the glory that is upon him shall be utterly destroyed: for the Lord has spoken it.

25  In that day, says the Lord of hosts, the peg which was fastened in a trustworthy place shall be taken away. And he will be broken, and he will fall, and he will perish, along with all that had depended upon him, because the Lord has spoken it.

23:1  The burden of Tyre. Howl, ye ships of Tarshish, for it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in; from the land of Kittim it is revealed to them.

1  THE WORD CONCERNING TYRE. Howl, ye ships of Carthage; for she has perished, and men no longer arrive from the land of the Citians: she is led captive.

1  THE prophecy concerning the fall of Tyre. Howl, O ships of Tarshish! for he who brings merchandise is plundered; from the land of China the news has been revealed to us.

23:2  Be still, ye inhabitants of the coast-land; thou whom the merchants of Zidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished.

2  To whom are the dwellers in the island become like, the merchants of Phoenice, passing over the sea

2  Be silent, you inhabitants of the island! The merchants of Sidon, crossing over the sea, have filled you.

23:3  And on great waters the seed of Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, was her revenue; and she was the mart of nations.

23:4  Be thou ashamed, O Zidon; for the sea hath spoken, the stronghold of the sea, saying: 'I have not travailed, nor brought forth, neither have I reared young men, nor brought up virgins.'

4  Be ashamed, O Sidon! For the sea speaks, the strength of the sea, saying: “I have not been in labor, and I have not given birth, and I have not raised young men, nor have I promoted the development of virgins.”

23:5  When the report cometh to Egypt, they shall be sorely pained at the report of Tyre.

5  Moreover when it shall be heard in Egypt, sorrow shall seize them for Tyre.

5  When it has been heard in Egypt, they will be in anguish, when they hear of Tyre.

23:6  Pass ye over to Tarshish; howl, ye inhabitants of the coast-land.

6  Depart ye to Carthage; howl, ye that dwell in this island.

6  Cross over the seas. Wail, you inhabitants of the island!

23:7  Is this your joyous city, whose feet in antiquity, in ancient days, carried her afar off to sojourn?

7  Was not this your pride from the beginning, before she was given up?

7  Is this not your place, which from its earliest days has gloried in its antiquity? Her feet will lead her to a sojourn far away.

23:8  Who hath devised this against Tyre, the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth?

8  Who has devised this counsel against Tyre? Is she inferior? or has she no strength? her merchants were the glorious princes of the earth.

8  Who has made this plan against Tyre, which formerly was crowned, whose merchants were leaders, whose traders were illustrious on the earth?

23:9  YHWH of hosts hath devised it, to pollute the pride of all glory, to bring into contempt all the honourable of the earth.

9  The Lord of hosts has purposed to bring down all the pride of the glorious ones, and to disgrace every glorious thing on the earth.

23:10  Overflow thy land as the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish! there is no girdle any more.

10  Till thy land; for ships no more come out of Carthage.

10  Cross through your land, as through a river, O daughter of the sea. You no longer have a belt.

23:11  He hath stretched out His hand over the sea, He hath shaken the kingdoms; YHWH hath given commandment concerning Canaan, to destroy the strongholds thereof;

11  And thy hand prevails no more by sea, which troubled kings: the Lord of hosts has given a command concerning Chanaan, to destroy the strength thereof.

11  He has extended his hand over the sea. He has stirred up kingdoms. The Lord has given an order against Canaan, so that he may crush its strong.

23:12  And He said: 'Thou shalt no more rejoice.' O thou oppressed virgin daughter of Zidon, arise, pass over to Kittim; even there shalt thou have no rest.

12  And men shall say, Ye shall no longer at all continue to insult and injure the daughter of Sidon: and if thou depart to the Citians, neither there shalt thou have rest.

12  And he said: “You shall no longer increase so as to glory, while enduring calumny, O virgin daughter of Sidon. Rise up and set sail for Kittim; in that place, too, there will be no rest for you.”

23:13  Behold, the land of the Chaldeans--this is the people that was not, when Asshur founded it for shipmen--they set up their towers, they overthrew the palaces thereof; it is made a ruin.

13  And if thou depart to the land of the Chaldeans, this also is laid waste by the Assyrians, for her wall is fallen.

13  Behold the land of the Chaldeans; this is the people, and not the Assyrians, who destroyed it; they appointed spies who spied on her palaces, and they brought it to ruin.

23:14  Howl, ye ships of Tarshish, for your stronghold is laid waste.

14  Wail, you ships of the sea! For your strength has been devastated.

23:15  And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king; after the end of seventy years it shall fare with Tyre as in the song of the harlot

15  And this shall be in that day: you, O Tyre, will be forgotten for seventy years, like the days of one king. Then, after seventy years, there will be, for Tyre, something like the canticle of a harlot.

23:16  Take a harp, go about the city, thou harlot long forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered.

16  Take up a stringed instrument. Circulate through the city, you harlot who had been forgotten. Sing many canticles well, so that you may be remembered.

23:17  And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that YHWH will remember Tyre, and she shall return to her hire, and shall have commerce with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.

17  And this shall be after seventy years: the Lord will visit Tyre, and he will lead her back to her profits. And she will fornicate again with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.

23:18  And her gain and her hire shall be holiness to YHWH; it shall not be treasured nor laid up; for her gain shall be for them that dwell before the YHWH, to eat their fill, and for stately clothing.

18  And her trade and her gain shall be holiness to the Lord: it shall not be gathered for them, but for those that dwell before the Lord, even all her trade, to eat and drink and be filled, and for a covenant and a memorial before the Lord.

18  And her businesses and her profits will be sanctified to the Lord. They will not be locked away and they will not be stored. For her business will be for those who will live in the presence of the Lord, so that they may eat until satisfied, and may be well-clothed even into old age.

24:1  Behold, YHWH maketh the earth empty and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.

1  Behold, the Lord is about to lay waste the world, and will make it desolate, and will lay bare the surface of it, and scatter them that dwell therein.

1  BEHOLD, the LORD shall destroy the earth and lay it waste and turn it upside down and scatter its inhabitants.

24:2  And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor.

2  And the people shall be as the priest, and the servant as the lord, and the maid as the mistress; the buyer shall be as the seller, the lender as the borrower, and the debtor as his creditor.

24:3  The earth shall be utterly emptied, and clean despoiled; for YHWH hath spoken this word.

3  The earth shall be completely laid waste, and the earth shall be utterly spoiled: for the mouth of the Lord has spoken these things.

3  The earth will be utterly devastated and utterly plundered. For the Lord has spoken this word.

24:4  The earth fainteth and fadeth away, the world faileth and fadeth away, the lofty people of the earth do fail.

4  The earth mourns, and the world is ruined, the lofty ones of the earth are mourning.

4  The earth mourned, and slipped away, and languished. The world slipped away; the loftiness of the people of the earth was weakened.

24:5  The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statute, broken the everlasting covenant.

5  And she has sinned by reason of her inhabitants; because they have transgressed the law, and changed the ordinances, even the everlasting covenant.

5  And the earth was corrupted by its inhabitants. For they have transgressed the laws, they have changed the ordinance, they have dissipated the everlasting covenant.

24:6  Therefore hath a curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are found guilty; therefore the inhabitants of the earth waste away, and men are left few.

6  Because of this, a curse will devour the earth, and its inhabitants will sin. And for this reason, its caretakers will become crazed, and few men will be left behind.

6  Therefore the earth shall sit in mourning, and all its inhabitants shall be condemned; therefore all the inhabitants of the earth shall be destroyed, and a few men shall be left.

24:7  The new wine faileth, the vine fadeth; all the merry-hearted do sigh.

7  The wine shall mourn, the vine shall mourn, all the merry-hearted shall sigh.

7  The vintage has mourned. The vine has languished. All those who were rejoicing in their hearts have groaned.

24:8  The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.

8  The mirth of timbrels has ceased, the sound of the harp has ceased.

8  The gladness of the drums has ceased. The sound of rejoicing has quieted. The sweetness of stringed instruments has been silenced.

24:9  They drink not wine with a song; strong drink is bitter to them that drink it.

9  They are ashamed, they have not drunk wine; strong drink has become bitter to them that drink it.

9  They will not drink wine with a song. The drink will be bitter to those who drink it.

24:10  Broken down is the city of wasteness; every house is shut up, that none may come in.

10  All the city has become desolate: one shall shut his house so that none shall enter.

10  The city of vanity has been worn away. Every house has been closed up; no one enters.

24:11  There is a crying in the streets amidst the wine; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.

11  There is a howling for the wine everywhere; all the mirth of the land has ceased, all the mirth of the land has departed.

11  There will be a clamor for wine in the streets. All rejoicing has been abandoned. The gladness of the earth has been carried away.

24:12  In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten unto ruin.

12  And cities shall be left desolate, and houses being left shall fall to ruin.

12  Solitude is what remains in the city, and calamity will overwhelm its gates.

24:13  For thus shall it be in the midst of the earth, among the peoples, as at the beating of an olive-tree, as at the gleanings when the vintage is done.

13  All this shall be in the land in the midst of the nations, as if one should strip an olive tree, so shall they strip them; but when the vintage is done,

13  For so shall it be in the midst of the earth, in the midst of the people: it is as if the few remaining olives are being shaken from the olive tree, and it is like a few clusters of grapes, when the grape harvest has already ended.

24:14  Those yonder lift up their voice, they sing for joy; for the majesty of YHWH they shout from the sea

14  these shall cry aloud; and they that are left on the land shall rejoice together in the glory of the Lord: the water of the sea shall be troubled.

14  These few shall lift up their voice and give praise. When the Lord will have been glorified, they will make a joyful noise from the sea.

24:15  'Therefore glorify ye YHWH in the regions of light, even the name of the YHWH, the God of Israel, in the isles of the sea.'

15  Therefore shall the glory of the Lord be in the isles of the sea; the name of the Lord shall be glorious.

15  Because of this, glorify the Lord in doctrine: the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea.

24:16  From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs: 'Glory to the righteous.' But I say: I waste away, I waste away, woe is me! The treacherous deal treacherously; yea, the treacherous deal very treacherously.

16  O Lord God of Israel, from the ends of the earth we have heard wonderful things, and there is hope to the godly: but they shall say, Woe to the despisers, that despise the law.

16  From the ends of the earth, we have heard the praises of the glory of the Just One. And I said: “My secret is for myself! My secret is for myself! Woe to me! Those who would betray us have betrayed us, and they have betrayed us with the betrayal of transgression.”

24:17  Terror, and the pit, and the trap, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.

17  Fear, and a pit, and a snare, are upon you that dwell on the earth.

17  Dread, and the pit, and the snare are over you, O inhabitant of the earth!

24:18  And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the terror shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the trap; for the windows on high are opened, and the foundations of the earth do shake;

18  And this shall be: whoever will flee from the voice of dread will fall into the pit. And whoever will extricate himself from the pit will be caught in the snare. For the floodgates from above have been opened, and the foundations of the earth will be shaken.

24:19  The earth is broken, broken down, the earth is crumbled in pieces, the earth trembleth and tottereth;

19  the earth shall be utterly confounded, and the earth shall be completely perplexed.

19  The earth will be utterly broken! The earth will be utterly crushed! The earth will be utterly shaken!

24:20  The earth reeleth to and fro like a drunken man, and swayeth to and fro as a lodge; and the transgression thereof is heavy upon it, and it shall fall, and not rise again.

20  The earth will stagger greatly, like a drunken man, and will be carried away, like the tent of a single night. And its iniquity will be heavy upon it, and it will fall and not rise up again.

24:21  And it shall come to pass in that day, that YHWH will punish the host of the high heaven on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.

21  And God shall bring his hand upon the host of heaven, and upon the kings of the earth.

21  And this shall be: in that day, the Lord will visit upon the armies of the sky above, and upon the kings of the earth who are on the ground.

24:22  And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the dungeon, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be punished.

22  And they shall gather the multitude thereof into prisons, and they shall shut them into a strong hold: after many generations they shall be visited.

22  And they will be gathered together like the gathering of one bundle into a pit. And they will be enclosed in that place, as in a prison. And after many days, they will be visited.

24:23  Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed; for YHWH of hosts will reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before His elders shall be Glory.

23  And the brick shall decay, and the wall shall fall; for the Lord shall reign from out of Sion, and out of Jerusalem, and shall be glorified before his elders.

23  And the moon will be ashamed, and the sun will be confounded, when the Lord of hosts will reign on mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and when he will have been glorified in the sight of his elders.

25:1  O YHWH, Thou art my God, I will exalt Thee, I will praise Thy name, for Thou hast done wonderful things; even counsels of old, in faithfulness and truth.

1  O Lord, you are my God! I will exalt you, and I will confess your name. For you have accomplished miracles. Your plan, from antiquity, is faithful. Amen.

25:2  For Thou hast made of a city a heap, of a fortified city a ruin; a castle of strangers to be no city, it shall never be built.

2  For you have appointed a city as a tomb, a strong city for ruination, a house of foreigners: so that it may not be a city, and so that it may not be rebuilt forever.

25:3  Therefore shall the strong people glorify Thee, the city of the terrible nations shall fear Thee.

3  Concerning this, a strong people will praise you; a city with a robust people will fear you.

3  Therefore many peoples shall praise thee, the city of the mighty nations shall worship thee.

25:4  For Thou hast been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat; for the blast of the terrible ones was as a storm against the wall.

4  For thou hast been a helper to every lowly city, and a shelter to them that were disheartened by reason of poverty: thou shalt deliver them from wicked men: thou hast been a shelter of them that thirst, and a refreshing air to injured men.

4  For you have been the strength of the poor, the strength of the indigent in his tribulation, a refuge from the whirlwind, a shadow from the heat. For the spirit of the mighty is like a whirlwind striking against a wall.

25:5  As the heat in a dry place, Thou didst subdue the noise of strangers; as the heat by the shadow of a cloud, the song of the terrible ones was brought low.

5  We were as faint-hearted men thirsting in Sion, by reason of ungodly men to whom thou didst deliver us.

5  You will bring low the uprising of foreigners, just as heat brings thirst. And like heat under a torrential cloud, you will cause the offshoot of the strong to wither away.

25:6  And in this mountain will YHWH of hosts make unto all peoples a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.

6  And the Lord of hosts shall make a feast for all the nations: on this mount they shall drink gladness, they shall drink wine

6  And the Lord of hosts will cause all the peoples on this mountain to feast on fatness, to feast on wine, a fatness full of marrow, a purified wine.

25:7  And He will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering that is cast over all peoples, and the veil that is spread over all nations.

7  they shall anoint themselves with ointment in this mountain. Impart thou all these things to the nations; for this is God’s counsel upon all the nations.

7  And he will cast down violently, on this mountain, the face of the chains, with which all peoples had been bound, and the net, with which all nations had been covered.

25:8  He will swallow up death for ever; and YHWH GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the reproach of His people will He take away from off all the earth; for YHWH hath spoken it.

8  Death has prevailed and swallowed men up; but again the Lord God has taken away every tear from every face. He has taken away the reproach of his people from all the earth: for the mouth off the Lord has spoken it.

8  He will violently cast down death forever. And the Lord God will take away the tears from every face, and he will take away the disgrace of his people from the entire earth. For the Lord has spoken it.

25:9  And it shall be said in that day: 'Lo, this is our God, for whom we waited, that He might save us; this is YHWH, for whom we waited, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.'

9  And in that day they shall say, behold our God in whom we have trusted, and he shall save us: this is the Lord; we have waited for him, and we have exulted, and will rejoice in our salvation.

25:10  For in this mountain will the hand of YHWH rest, and Moab shall be trodden down in his place, even as straw is trodden down in the dunghill.

10  God will give rest on this mountain, and the country of Moab shall be trodden down, as they tread the floor with waggons.

10  For the hand of the Lord will rest upon this mountain. And Moab will be trampled under him, just as stubble is worn away by a wagon.

25:11  And when he shall spread forth his hands in the midst thereof, as he that swimmeth spreadeth forth his hands to swim, his pride shall be brought down together with the cunning of his hands.

11  And he shall spread forth his hands, even as he also brings down man to destroy him: and he shall bring low his pride in regard to the thing on which he has laid his hands.

11  And he will extend his hands under him, like a swimmer extending his hands to swim. And he will bring down his glory with a clap of his hands.

25:12  And the high fortress of thy walls will He bring down, lay low, and bring to the ground, even to the dust.

12  And the fortress of treason of your rebellious men and your strong walls he shall tear down, lay low, and bring to the ground, even to the dust.

26:1  In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city; walls and bulwarks doth He appoint for salvation.

1  In that day, this canticle will be sung in the land of Judah. Within it will be set the city of our strength: Zion, a savior, a wall with a bulwark.

26:2  Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation that keepeth faithfulness may enter in.

2  Open the gates, and let the just people who guard the truth enter.

2  Open the gates, that the righteous peoples who keep faith and that the truth may enter in.

26:3  The mind stayed on Thee Thou keepest in perfect peace; because it trusteth in Thee.

3  supporting truth, and keeping peace: for on thee, O Lord,

3  The old error has gone away. You will serve peace: peace, for we have hoped in you.

26:4  Trust ye in YHWH for ever, for the YHWH is GOD, an everlasting Rock.

4  For the LORD God is an everlasting strength;

26:5  For He hath brought down them that dwell on high, the lofty city, laying it low, laying it low even to the ground, bringing it even to the dust.

5  who hast humbled and brought down them that dwell on high thou shalt cast down strong cities, and bring them to the ground.

26:6  The foot shall tread it down, even the feet of the poor, and the steps of the needy.

6  And the feet of the meek and lowly shall trample them.

26:7  The way of the just is straight; Thou, Most Upright, makest plain the path of the just.

26:8  Yea, in the way of Thy judgments, O YHWH, have we waited for Thee; to Thy name and to Thy memorial is the desire of our soul.

8  For the way of the Lord is judgement: we have hoped in thy name, and on the remembrance of thee,

8  And in the path of your judgments, O Lord, we have endured for you. Your name and your remembrance are the desire of the soul.

26:9  With my soul have I desired Thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me have I sought Thee earnestly; for when Thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.

9  which our soul longs for: my spirit seeks thee very early in the morning, O God, for thy commandments are a light on the earth: learn righteousness, ye that dwell upon the earth.

9  My soul has desired you in the night. But I will also watch for you with my spirit, in my inmost heart, from the morning. When you accomplish your judgments upon the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn justice.

26:10  Let favour be shown to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness; in the land of uprightness will he deal wrongfully, and will not behold the majesty of YHWH.

10  For the ungodly one is put down: no one who will not learn righteousness on the earth, shall be able to do the truth: let the ungodly be taken away, that he see not the glory of the Lord.

26:11  YHWH, Thy hand was lifted up, yet they see not; they shall see with shame Thy zeal for the people; yea, fire shall devour Thine adversaries.

11  O Lord, thine arm is exalted, yet they knew it not: but when they know they shall be ashamed: jealousy shall seize upon an untaught nation, and now fire shall devour the adversaries.

11  Lord, let your hand be exalted, and let them not see it. May the envious people see and be confounded. And may fire devour your enemies.

26:12  YHWH, Thou wilt establish peace for us; for Thou hast indeed wrought all our works for us.

12  O Lord our God, give us peace: for thou hast rendered to us all things.

12  Lord, you will give us peace. For all our works have been wrought for us by you.

26:13  O YHWH our God, other lords beside Thee have had dominion over us; but by Thee only do we make mention of Thy name.

13  O Lord our God, take possession of us: O Lord, we know not any other beside thee: we name thy name.

13  O LORD our God, other lords besides thee have had dominion over us; but thy name alone will we mention;

26:14  The dead live not, the shades rise not; to that end hast Thou punished and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.

14  But the dead shall not see life, neither shall physicians by any means raise them up: therefore thou hast brought wrath upon them, and slain them, and hast taken away every male of them. Bring more evils upon them, O Lord;

26:15  Thou hast gotten Thee honour with the nations, O YHWH, yea, exceeding great honour with the nations; Thou art honoured unto the farthest ends of the earth.

15  bring more evils on the glorious ones of the earth.

15  You have been lenient to the people, O Lord, lenient to the people. But have you been glorified? You have removed all the limits of the earth.

26:16  YHWH, in trouble have they sought Thee, silently they poured out a prayer when Thy chastening was upon them.

16  Lord, in affliction I remembered thee; thy chastening was to us with small affliction.

26:17  Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been at Thy presence, O YHWH.

17  And as a woman in travail draws nigh to be delivered, and cries out in her pain; so have we been to thy beloved.

26:18  We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any deliverance in the land; neither are the inhabitants of the world come to life.

18  We have conceived, O Lord, because of thy fear, and have been in pain, and have brought forth the breath of thy salvation, which we have wrought upon the earth: we shall not fall, but all that dwell upon the land shall fall.

18  We have conceived, and it is as if we were in labor, but we have given birth to wind. We have not brought forth salvation on the earth. For this reason, the inhabitants of the earth have not fallen.

26:19  Thy dead shall live, my dead bodies shall arise--awake and sing, ye that dwell in the dust--for Thy dew is as the dew of light, and the earth shall bring to life the shades.

19  The dead shall rise, and they that are in the tombs shall be raised, and they that are in the earth shall rejoice: for the dew from thee is healing to them: but the land of the ungodly shall perish.

19  Your dead shall live. My slain will rise again. Be awakened, and give praise, you who live in the dust! For your dew is the dew of the light, and you shall be dragged down to the land of the giants, to ruination.

26:20  Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee; hide thyself for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.

20  Go, my people, enter into thy closets, shut thy door, hide thyself for a little season, until the anger of the Lord have passed away.

20  Go, my people! Enter your chambers. Close your doors behind you. Conceal yourselves for a very brief time, until the indignation has passed over you.

26:21  For, behold, YHWH cometh forth out of His place to visit upon the inhabitants of the earth their iniquity; the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

21  For, behold, the Lord is bringing wrath from his holy place upon the dwellers on the earth: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall not cover her slain.

21  For behold, the Lord will go forth from his place, so that he may visit the iniquity of each inhabitant of the earth against him. And the earth will reveal its blood, and it will no longer cover its slain.

27:1  In that day YHWH with His sore and great and strong sword will punish leviathan the slant serpent, and leviathan the tortuous serpent; and He will slay the dragon that is in the sea.

1  In that day God shall bring his holy and great and strong sword upon the dragon, even the serpent that flees, upon the dragon, the crooked serpent: he shall destroy the dragon.

1  In that day, the Lord will visit, with his harsh and great and strong sword, against Leviathan, the barred serpent, and against Leviathan, the twisted serpent, and he will slay the whale that is in the sea.

27:2  In that day sing ye of her: 'A vineyard of foaming wine!'

2  In that day there shall be a fair vineyard, and a desire to commence a song concerning it.

2  In that day, the vineyard of pure wine will sing to them.

27:3  I YHWH do guard it, I water it every moment; lest Mine anger visit it, I guard it night and day.

3  I am a strong city, a city in a siege: in vain shall I water it; for it shall be taken by night, and by day the wall shall fall.

3  I am the Lord, who watches over it. I will suddenly give drink to it. I will watch over it, night and day, lest perhaps someone visit against it.

27:4  Fury is not in Me; would that I were as the briers and thorns in flame! I would with one step burn it altogether.

4  There is no woman that has not taken hold of it; who will set me to watch stubble in the field? because of this enemy I have set her aside; therefore on this account the Lord has done all that he appointed.

4  Indignation is not mine. Who will be a thorn and a brier to me in battle? I will advance against them. I set them on fire together.

27:5  Or else let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; yea, let him make peace with Me.

5  I am burnt up; they that dwell in her shall cry, Let us make peace with him, let us make peace,

5  Or let Israel take hold of my strength, and I will make peace for him, peace will I give him.

27:6  In days to come shall Jacob take root, Israel shall blossom and bud; and the face of the world shall be filled with fruitage.

6  As they advance with violence against Jacob, Israel will flourish and spring forth, and they will fill the face of the world with offspring.

27:7  Hath He smitten him as He smote those that smote him? Or is he slain according to the slaughter of them that were slain by Him?

7  Shall he himself be thus smitten, even as he smote? and as he slew, shall he be thus slain?

7  Has he struck him with the scourge that he himself used to strike others? Or has he killed in the manner that he himself used to kill his victims?

27:8  In full measure, when Thou sendest her away, Thou dost contend with her; He hath removed her with His rough blast in the day of the east wind.

8  Fighting and reproaching he will dismiss them; didst thou not meditate with a harsh spirit, to slay them with a wrathful spirit?

27:9  Therefore by this shall the iniquity of Jacob be expiated, and this is all the fruit of taking away his sin: when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in pieces, so that the Asherim and the sun-images shall rise no more.

27:10  For the fortified city is solitary, a habitation abandoned and forsaken, like the wilderness; there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume the branches thereof.

10  The flock that dwelt there shall be left, as a deserted flock; and the ground shall be for a long time for pasture, and there shall flocks lie down to rest.

27:11  When the boughs thereof are withered, they shall be broken off; the women shall come, and set them on fire; for it is a people of no understanding; therefore He that made them will not have compassion upon them, and He that formed them will not be gracious unto them.

11  Its harvest will be crushed by dryness. Women will arrive and teach it, for it is not a wise people. Because of this, he who made it will not take pity on it, and he who formed it will not spare it.

27:12  And it shall come to pass in that day, that YHWH will beat off His fruit from the flood of the River unto the Brook of Egypt, and ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel.

12  And this shall be: in that day, the Lord will strike, from the channel of the river, even to the torrent of Egypt. And you shall be gathered together, one by one, O sons of Israel.

27:13  And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great horn shall be blown; and they shall come that were lost in the land of Assyria, and they that were dispersed in the land of Egypt; and they shall worship YHWH in the holy mountain at Jerusalem.

28:1  Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley of them that are smitten down with wine!

1  Woe to the crown of arrogance, to the inebriated of Ephraim, and to the falling flower, the glory of his exultation, to those who were at the top of the very fat valley, staggering from wine.

28:2  Behold, YHWH hath a mighty and strong one, as a storm of hail, a tempest of destruction, as a storm of mighty waters overflowing, that casteth down to the earth with violence.

2  Behold, the anger of the Lord is strong and severe, as descending hail where there is no shelter, violently descending; as a great body of water sweeping away the soil, he shall make rest for the land.

2  Behold, the Lord is powerful and steadfast, like a storm of hail, like a crushing whirlwind, like the force of many waters, inundating, sent forth over a spacious land.

28:3  The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under foot;

3  The crown of pride, the hirelings of Ephraim, shall be beaten down with the hands and with the feet.

3  The arrogant crown of the inebriated of Ephraim will be trampled under foot.

28:4  And the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be as the first-ripe fig before the summer, which when one looketh upon it, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.

4  And the falling flower, the glory of his exultation, who is at the summit of the fat valley, will be like a premature fruit before the ripeness of autumn, which, when the onlooker beholds it, as soon he takes it in his hand, he will devour it.

4  And the shameful garland of the strength of his glory, which dominates at the entrance of the fertile valley, shall be as the firstfruits before the summer, which he who sees it picks up at once and devours.

28:5  In that day shall YHWH of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of His people;

5  In that day the Lord of hosts shall be the crown of hope, the woven crown of glory, to the remnant of the people.

28:6  And for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn back the battle at the gate.

6  They shall be left in the spirit of judgement for judgement, and for the strength of them that hinder slaying.

6  And he will be the spirit of judgment for those who sit in judgment, and the strength of those who return from war to the gates.

28:7  But these also reel through wine, and stagger through strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel through strong drink, they are confused because of wine, they stagger because of strong drink; they reel in vision, they totter in judgment.

7  For these have trespassed through wine; they have erred through strong drink: the priest and the prophet are mad through strong drink, they are swallowed up by reason of wine, they have staggered through drunkenness; they have erred: this is their vision.

7  Yet truly, these also have been ignorant due to wine, and they have gone astray due to inebriation. The priest and the prophet have been ignorant because of inebriation. They have been absorbed by wine. They have staggered in drunkenness. They have not known the One who sees. They have been ignorant of judgment.

28:8  For all tables are full of filthy vomit, and no place is clean.

8  A curse shall devour this counsel, for this is their counsel for the sake of covetousness.

8  For all the tables have been filled with vomit and filth, so much so that there was no place left.

28:9  Whom shall one teach knowledge? And whom shall one make to understand the message? Them that are weaned from the milk, them that are drawn from the breasts?

9  To whom have we reported evils? and to whom have we reported a message? even to those that are weaned from the milk, who are drawn from the breast.

28:10  For it is precept by precept, precept by precept, line by line, line by line; here a little, there a little.

10  Expect thou affliction on affliction, hope upon hope: yet a little, and yet a little,

10  So then: command, and command again; command, and command again; expect, and expect again; a little here, and a little there.

28:11  For with stammering lips and with a strange tongue shall it be spoken to this people;

11  by reason of the contemptuous words of the lips, by means of another language: for they shall speak to this people, saying to them,

11  For with the speech of lips and with a different language, he will speak to this people.

28:12  To whom it was said: 'This is the rest, give ye rest to the weary; and this is the refreshing'; yet they would not hear.

12  This is the rest to him that is hungry, and this is the calamity: but they would not hear.

12  For I have said to them, This is the place of my rest, wherewith I may cause the weary to rest; and this is the place of tranquillity; but they would not listen.

28:13  And so the word of YHWH is unto them precept by precept, precept by precept, line by line, line by line; here a little, there a little; that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

28:14  Wherefore hear the word of YHWH, ye scoffers, the ballad-mongers of this people which is in Jerusalem

14  Therefore hear ye the word of the Lord, ye afflicted men, and ye princes of this people that is in Jerusalem.

14  Because of this, listen to the word of the Lord, you mocking men, who lord it over my people who are at Jerusalem.

28:15  Because ye have said: 'We have made a covenant with death, and with the nether-world are we at agreement; when the scouring scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us; for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood have we hid ourselves';

15  For you have said: “We struck a deal with death, and we formed a pact with Hell. When the inundating scourge passes through, it will not overwhelm us. For we have placed our hope in lies, and we are protected by what is false.”

28:16  Therefore thus saith YHWH GOD: Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a costly corner-stone of sure foundation; he that believeth shall not make haste.

16  Therefore thus saith the Lord, even the Lord, Behold, I lay for the foundations of Sion a costly stone, a choice, a corner-stone, a precious stone, for its foundations; and he that believes on him shall by no means be ashamed.

16  For this reason, thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will set a stone within the foundations of Zion, a tested stone, a cornerstone, a precious stone, which has been established in the foundation: whoever trusts in him need not hurry.

28:17  And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plummet; and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding-place.

17  And I will cause judgement to be for hope, and my compassion shall be for just measures, and ye that trust vainly in falsehood shall fall: for the storm shall by no means pass by you,

17  And I will establish judgment in weights, and justice in measures. And a hailstorm will overturn hope in what is false; and waters will inundate its protection.

28:18  And your covenant with death shall be disannulled and your agreement with the nether-world shall not stand; when the scouring scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it,

18  except it also take away your covenant of death, and your trust in Hades shall by no means stand: if the rushing storm should come upon you, ye shall be beaten down by it.

18  And your deal with death will be abolished, and your pact with Hell will not stand. When the inundating scourge passes through, you will be trampled down by it.

28:19  As often as it passeth through, it shall take you; for morning by morning shall it pass through, by day and by night; and it shall be sheer terror to understand the message.

19  Whenever it shall pass by, it shall take you; morning by morning it shall pass by in the day, and in the night there shall be an evil hope. Learn to hear,

19  Whenever it passes through, it will take you away. For, at first light of morning, it will pass through, in the day and in the night, and vexation alone will make you understand what you hear.

28:20  For the bed is too short for a man to stretch himself; and the covering too narrow when he gathereth himself up.

20  ye that are distressed; we cannot fight, but we are ourselves too weak for you to be gathered.

28:21  For YHWH will rise up as in mount Perazim, He will be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon; that He may do His work, strange is His work, and bring to pass His act, strange is His act.

21  The Lord shall rise up as a mountain of ungodly men, and shall be in the valley of Gabaon; he shall perform his works with wrath, even a work of bitterness, and his wrath shall deal strangely, and his destruction shall be strange.

21  For the Lord will stand, just as at the mountain of divisions. He will be angry, just as in the valley which is in Gibeon, so that he may accomplish his work, his strange work, so that he may complete his work, his work which is foreign even to him.

28:22  Now therefore be ye not scoffers, lest your bands be made strong; for an extermination wholly determined have I heard from YHWH, the GOD of hosts, upon the whole land.

22  Therefore do not ye rejoice, neither let your bands be made strong; for I have heard of works finished and cut short by the Lord of hosts, which he will execute upon all the earth.

22  And now, do not be willing to mock, lest your chains be tightened. For I have heard, from the Lord, the God of hosts, about the consummation and the abridgement concerning the entire earth.

28:23  Give ye ear, and hear my voice; attend, and hear my speech.

23  Hearken, and hear my voice; attend, and hear my words.

23  Pay close attention, and listen to my voice! Attend and hear my eloquence!

28:24  Is the plowman never done with plowing to sow, with the opening and harrowing of his ground?

24  Will the ploughman plough all the day? or will he prepare the seed beforehand, before he tills the ground?

24  Would the plowman, after plowing all day so that he may sow, instead cut open and hoe his soil?

28:25  When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the black cummin, and scatter the cummin, and put in the wheat in rows and the barley in the appointed place and the spelt in the border thereof?

25  Does he not, when he has levelled the surface thereof, then sow the small black poppy, or cumin, and afterward sow wheat, and barley, and millet, and bread-corn in thy borders?

25  Will he not, when he has made the surface level, sow coriander, and scatter cumin, and plant wheat in rows, and barley, and millet, and vetch in their places?

28:26  For He doth instruct him aright; his God doth teach him.

26  So thou shalt be chastened by the judgement of thy God, and shalt rejoice.

28:27  For the black cummin is not threshed with a threshing-sledge, neither is a cart-wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the black cummin is beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod.

27  For coriander cannot be threshed with a saw, and a cartwheel cannot revolve over cumin. Instead, coriander is shaken out with a stick, and cumin with a staff.

27  For dill is not threshed under the feet of oxen, nor is a threshing instrument turned about upon cummin, but dill is beaten out with a staff, and cummin with a rod.

28:28  Is bread corn crushed? Nay, he will not ever be threshing it; and though the roller of his wagon and its sharp edges move noisily, he doth not crush it.

28  for I will not be wroth with you for ever, neither shall the voice of my anger crush you.

28:29  This also cometh forth from YHWH of hosts: Wonderful is His counsel, and great His wisdom.

29  And these signs came forth from the Lord of hosts. Take counsel, exalt vain comfort.

29  And this has gone forth from the Lord, the God of hosts, so that he may accomplish his miraculous plan and magnify justice.

29:1  Ah, Ariel, Ariel, the city where David encamped! Add ye year to year, let the feasts come round!

1  Alas for the city of Ariel, which David besieged. Gather ye fruits year by year; eat ye, for ye shall eat with Moab.

1  Woe to Ariel, to Ariel the city against which David fought: year has been added to year, the solemnities have unfolded.

29:2  Then will I distress Ariel, and there shall be mourning and moaning; and she shall be unto Me as a hearth of God.

2  For I will grievously afflict Ariel: and her strength and her wealth shall be mine.

2  And I will surround Ariel with siege works, and it will be in sorrow and mourning, and it will be like Ariel to me.

29:3  And I will encamp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mound, and I will raise siege works against thee.

3  And I will compass thee about like David, and will raise a mound about thee, and set up towers round thee.

3  And I will surround you like a sphere all around you, and I will raise up a rampart against you, and I will set up fortifications to blockade you.

29:4  And brought down thou shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust; and thy voice shall be as of a ghost out of the ground, and thy speech shall chirp out of the dust.

4  And thy words shall be brought down to the earth, and thy words shall sink down to the earth, and thy voice shall be as they that speak out of the earth, and thy voice shall be lowered to the ground.

4  You will be brought low. You will speak from the ground, and your eloquence will be heard from the dirt. And, from the ground, your voice will be like that of the python, and your eloquence will mumble from the dirt.

29:5  But the multitude of thy foes shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones as chaff that passeth away; yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly--

5  And the multitude of those who fan you will be like fine dust. And the multitude of those who have prevailed against you will be like embers fading away.

29:6  There shall be a visitation from YHWH of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire.

6  And this will happen suddenly and swiftly. It will be visited from the Lord of hosts with thunder and earthquakes, and with the great noise of a whirlwind and a storm, and with a flame of devouring fire.

6  You shall be visited by the LORD of hosts with earthquakes, thunder, and great noise, with storm and tempest and the flame of devouring fire.

29:7  And the multitude of all the nations that war against Ariel, even all that war against her, and the bulwarks about her, and they that distress her, shall be as a dream, a vision of the night.

7  And the wealth of all the nations together, as many as have fought against Ariel, and all they that war against Jerusalem, and all who are gathered against her, and they that distress her, shall be as one that dreams in sleep by night.

29:8  And it shall be as when a hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth, but he awaketh, and his soul is empty; or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh, but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite--so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.

8  And as men drink and eat in sleep, and when they have arisen, the dream is vain: and as a thirsty man dreams as if he drank, and having arisen is still thirsty, and his soul has desired in vain: so shall be the wealth of all the nations, as many as have fought against the mount Sion.

8  And it will be like one who is hungry and dreams of eating, but, when he has been awakened, his soul is empty. And it will be like one who is thirsty and dreams of drinking, but, after he has been awakened, he still languishes in thirst, and his soul is empty. So shall the multitude of all the nations be, who have struggled against Mount Zion.

29:9  Stupefy yourselves, and be stupid! Blind yourselves, and be blind! ye that are drunken, but not with wine, that stagger, but not with strong drink.

9  Faint ye, and be amazed, and be overpowered, not with strong drink nor with wine.

9  Be stupefied and in wonder! Shake and quiver! Be inebriated, but not from wine! Stagger, but not from drunkenness!

29:10  For YHWH hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes; the prophets, and your heads, the seers, hath He covered.

10  For the Lord has made you to drink a spirit of deep sleep; and he shall close their eyes, and the eyes of their prophets and of their rulers, who see secret things.

10  For the Lord has mixed for you a spirit of deep sleep. He will close your eyes. He will cover your prophets and leaders, who see visions.

29:11  And the vision of all this is become unto you as the words of a writing that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying: 'Read this, I pray thee'; and he saith: 'I cannot, for it is sealed';

11  And all these things shall be to you as the words of this sealed book, which if they shall give to a learned man, saying, Read this, he shall then say, I cannot read it, for it is sealed.

11  And the vision of all will be to you like the words of a sealed book, which, when they have given it to someone who knows how to read, they will say, “Read this,” but he will respond, “I cannot; for it has been sealed.”

29:12  and the writing is delivered to him that is not learned, saying: 'Read this, I pray thee'; and he saith: 'I am not learned.'

12  And this book shall be given into the hands of a man that is unlearned, and one shall say to him, Read this; and he shall say, I am not learned.

12  But if the book is given to someone who does not know how to read, and it is said to him, “Read,” then he will respond, “I do not know how to read.”

29:13  And YHWH said: Forasmuch as this people draw near, and with their mouth and with their lips do honour Me, but have removed their heart far from Me, and their fear of Me is a commandment of men learned by rote;

13  And the Lord has said, This people draw nigh to me with their mouth, and they honour me with their lips, but their heart is far from me: but in vain do they worship me, teaching the commandments and doctrines of men.

13  Therefore the LORD said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honor me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their reverence toward me is taught by the precepts and doctrine of men;

29:14  Therefore, behold, I will again do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the prudence of their prudent men shall be hid.

14  Therefore behold I will proceed to remove this people, and I will remove them: and I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will hide the understanding of the prudent.

14  for this reason, behold, I will proceed to accomplish a wonder for this people, a great and mystifying miracle. For wisdom will perish from their wise, and the understanding of their prudent will be concealed.

29:15  Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from YHWH, and their works are in the dark, and they say: 'Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?'

15  Woe to them that deepen their counsel, and not by the Lord. Woe to them that take secret counsel, and whose works are in darkness, and they say, Who has seen us? and who shall know us, or what we do?

15  Woe to you who use the depths of the heart, so that you may hide your intentions from the Lord. Their works are done in darkness, and so they say: “Who sees us?” and “Who knows us?”

29:16  O your perversity! Shall the potter be esteemed as clay; that the thing made should say of him that made it: 'He made me not'; or the thing framed say of him that framed it: 'He hath no understanding?'

16  Shall ye not be counted as clay of the potter? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Thou didst not form me? or the work to the maker, Thou hast not made me wisely?

16  This intention of yours is perverse. It is as if the clay were to plan against the potter, or as if the work were to say to its maker: “You did not make me.” Or it is as if what has been formed were to say to the one who formed it, “You do not understand.”

29:17  Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest?

17  In not more than a little while and a brief time, Lebanon will be turned into a fruitful field, and a fruitful field will be considered to be a forest.

29:18  And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of a book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness.

29:19  The humble also shall increase their joy in YHWH, and the neediest among men shall exult in the Holy One of Israel.

19  and the poor shall rejoice with joy because of the Lord, and they that had no hope among men shall be filled with joy.

19  And the meek will increase their rejoicing in the Lord, and the poor among men will exult in the Holy One of Israel.

29:20  For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner ceaseth, and all they that watch for iniquity are cut off;

20  The lawless man has come to nought, and the proud man has perished, and they that transgress mischievously have been utterly destroyed

20  For the one who was prevailing has failed, the one who was mocking has been consumed, and all those who were standing guard over iniquity have been cut down.

29:21  That make a man an offender by words, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just with a thing of nought.

21  and they that cause men to sin by a word: and men shall make all that reprove in the gates an offence, because they have unjustly turned aside the righteous.

29:22  Therefore thus saith YHWH, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob: Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale;

22  Because of this, thus says the Lord, he who has redeemed Abraham, to the house of Jacob: From now on, Jacob will not be confounded; from now on his countenance will not blush with shame.

29:23  When he seeth his children, the work of My hands, in the midst of him, that they sanctify My name; yea, they shall sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall stand in awe of the God of Israel.

23  But when their children shall have seen my works, they shall sanctify my name for my sake, and they sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel.

29:24  They also that err in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmur shall learn instruction.

24  The foolish ones also whose spirit erred shall come to understanding, and fools shall learn to be obedient.

30:1  Woe to the rebellious children, saith YHWH, that take counsel, but not of Me; and that form projects, but not of My spirit, that they may add sin to sin;

1  Woe to the apostate children, saith the Lord: ye have framed counsel, not by me, and covenants not by my Spirit, to add sins to sins

1  “Woe to the sons of apostasy!” says the Lord. For you would take advice, but not from me. And you would begin to weave, but not by my spirit. Thus do you add sin upon sin!

30:2  That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at My mouth; to take refuge in the stronghold of Pharaoh, and to take shelter in the shadow of Egypt!

2  even they that proceed to go down into Egypt, but they have not enquired of me, that they might be helped by Pharao, and protected by the Egyptians.

2  You are walking so as to descend into Egypt, and you have not sought answers from my mouth, instead hoping for assistance from the strength of Pharaoh and placing trust in the shadow of Egypt.

30:3  Therefore shall the stronghold of Pharaoh turn to your shame, and the shelter in the shadow of Egypt to your confusion.

3  For the protection of Pharao shall be to you a disgrace, and there shall be a reproach to them that trust in Egypt.

3  And so, the strength of Pharaoh will be your confusion, and trust in the shadow of Egypt will be your disgrace.

30:4  For his princes are at Zoan, and his ambassadors are come to Hanes.

4  For there are princes in Tanes, evil messengers.

4  For your leaders were at Tanis, and your messengers have traveled even as far as Hanes.

30:5  They shall all be ashamed of a people that cannot profit them, that are not a help nor profit, but a shame, and also a reproach.

5  In vain shall they labour in seeking to a people, which shall not profit them for help, but shall be for a shame and reproach.

5  They have all been confounded because of a people who were not able to offer profit to them, who were not of assistance, nor of other usefulness, except to offer confusion and reproach.

30:6  The burden of the beasts of the South. Through the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the lioness and the lion, the viper and flying serpent, they carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, and their treasures upon the humps of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.

6  THE VISION OF THE QUADRUPEDS IN THE DESERT. In affliction and distress, where are the lion and lion’s whelp, thence come also asps, and the young of flying asps, there shall they be who bore their wealth on asses and camels to a nation which shall not profit them.

6  The prophecy concerning the oppressors of the south: Into a land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the lion and the young lion, the viper and the fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches upon the backs of young asses, and their treasures upon the humps of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.

30:7  For Egypt helpeth in vain, and to no purpose; therefore have I called her arrogancy that sitteth still.

7  The Egyptians shall help you utterly in vain: tell them, This your consolation is vain.

7  For Egypt will offer assistance, but without purpose or success. Therefore, concerning this, I cried out: “It is only arrogance! Remain calm.”

30:8  Now go, write it before them on a tablet, and inscribe it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever.

8  Now then sit down and write these words on a tablet, and in a book; for these things shall be for many long days, and even for ever.

8  Now, therefore, enter and write for them upon a tablet, and note it diligently in a book, and this shall be a testimony in the last days, and even unto eternity.

30:9  For it is a rebellious people, lying children, children that refuse to hear the teaching of YHWH;

9  For the people is disobedient, false children, who would not hear the law of God

9  For they are a people who provoke to wrath, and they are lying sons, sons unwilling to listen to the law of God.

30:10  That say to the seers: 'See not,' and to the prophets: 'Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy delusions;

10  who say to the prophets, Report not to us; and to them that see visions, Speak them not to us, but speak and report to us another error;

30:11  Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.'

11  and turn us aside from this way; remove from us this path, and remove from us the oracle of Israel.

11  Take me from the way. Avert me from the path. Let the Holy One of Israel cease from before our face.”

30:12  Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel: because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon;

12  Therefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye have refused to obey these words, and have trusted in falsehood; and because thou hast murmured, and been confident in this respect

12  Because of this, thus says the Holy One of Israel: Since you have rejected this word, and you have hoped in calumny and rebellion, and since you have depended upon these things,

30:13  Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.

13  for this reason, this iniquity will be to you like a breach that has fallen, and like a gap in a high wall. For its destruction will happen suddenly, when it is not expected.

30:14  And He shall break it as a potter's vessel is broken, breaking it in pieces without sparing; so that there shall not be found among the pieces thereof a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water out of the cistern.

14  And the fall thereof shall be as the breaking of an earthen vessel, as small fragments of a pitcher, so that thou shouldest not find among them a sherd, with which thou mightest take up fire, and with which thou shouldest draw a little water.

14  And it will be crushed, just as the earthen vessel of a potter is destroyed by a sharp blow. And not even a fragment of its earthenware will be found, which might carry a little fire from the hearth, or which might draw a little water from a hollow.

30:15  For thus said YHWH GOD, the Holy One of Israel: in sitting still and rest shall ye be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength; and ye would not.

15  Thus saith the Lord, the Holy Lord of Israel; When thou shalt turn and mourn, then thou shalt be saved; and thou shalt know where thou wast, when thou didst trust in vanities: then your strength became vain, yet ye would not hearken

15  Therefore thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel: When you will repent and rest you will be saved; in quietness and in hope shall be your strength; but you would not listen.

30:16  But ye said: 'No, for we will flee upon horses'; therefore shall ye flee; and: 'We will ride upon the swift'; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.

16  And you have said: “Never! Instead, we will flee by horseback.” For this reason, you will be put to flight. And you have said, “We will climb upon swift ones.” For this reason, those who pursue you will be even swifter.

16  But you said, Not so, for we will ride upon horses, and will flee upon swift ones; therefore you shall flee, and your pursuers shall be swift.

30:17  One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one, at the rebuke of five shall ye flee; till ye be left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on a hill.

17  A thousand shall flee because of the voice of one, and many shall flee on account of the voice of five; until ye be left as a signal-post upon a mountain, and as one bearing an ensign upon a hill.

17  A thousand men will flee in terror from the face of one, and you will flee in terror from the face of five, until you who have been left behind are like the mast of a ship at the top of a mountain, or like a sign on a hill.

30:18  And therefore will YHWH wait, that He may be gracious unto you, and therefore will He be exalted, that He may have compassion upon you; for the YHWH is a God of justice, happy are all they that wait for Him.

18  And the Lord will again wait, that he may pity you, and will therefore be exalted that he may have mercy upon you: because the Lord your God is a judge: blessed are they that stay themselves upon him.

18  Therefore, the Lord waits, so that he may take pity on you. And therefore, he will be exalted for sparing you. For the Lord is the God of judgment. Blessed are all those who wait for him.

30:19  For, O people that dwellest in Zion at Jerusalem, thou shalt weep no more; He will surely be gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry, when He shall hear, He will answer thee.

19  For the holy people shall dwell in Sion: and whereas Jerusalem has wept bitterly, saying, Pity me; he shall pity thee: when he perceived the voice of thy cry, he hearkened to thee.

19  For the people of Zion will live in Jerusalem. Bitterly, you will not weep. Mercifully, he will take pity on you. At the voice of your outcry, as soon as he hears, he will respond to you.

30:20  And though YHWH give you sparing bread and scant water, yet shall not thy Teacher hide Himself any more, but thine eyes shall see thy Teacher;

20  And though the Lord shall give you the bread of affliction and scant water, yet they that cause thee to err shall no more at all draw nigh to thee; for thine eyes shall see those that cause thee to err,

20  And the Lord will give you thick bread and accessible water. And he will not cause your teacher to fly away from you anymore. And your eyes will behold your instructor.

30:21  And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying: 'This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.'

21  And your ears will listen to the word of one admonishing you behind your back: “This is the way! Walk in it! And do not turn aside, neither to the right, nor to the left.”

30:22  And ye shall defile thy graven images overlaid with silver, and thy molten images covered with gold; thou shalt put them far away as one unclean; thou shalt say unto it: 'Get thee hence.'

22  And thou shalt pollute the plated idols, and thou shalt grind to powder the gilt ones, and shalt scatter them as the water of a removed woman, and thou shalt thrust them forth as dung.

22  And you will defile the plates of your silver graven images and the vestment of your gold molten idols. And you will throw these things away like the uncleanness of a menstruating woman. You will say to it, “Go away!”

30:23  And He will give the rain for thy seed, wherewith thou sowest the ground, and bread of the increase of the ground, and it shall be fat and plenteous; in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures.

30:24  The oxen likewise and the young asses that till the ground shall eat savoury provender, which hath been winnowed with the shovel and with the fan.

24  Your bulls and your oxen that till the ground, shall eat chaff mixed with winnowed barley.

24  And your bulls, and the colts of the donkeys that work the ground, will eat a mix of grains like that winnowed on the threshing floor.

30:25  And there shall be upon every lofty mountain, and upon every high hill streams and watercourses, in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.

25  And there will be, on every lofty mountain, and on every elevated hill, rivers of running water, in the day of the slaughter of many, when the tower will fall.

30:26  Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of the seven days, in the day that YHWH bindeth up the bruise of His people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.

26  And the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold in the day when the Lord shall heal the breach of his people, and shall heal the pain of thy wound.

30:27  Behold, the name of YHWH cometh from far, with His anger burning, and in thick uplifting of smoke; His lips are full of indignation, and His tongue is as a devouring fire;

27  Behold, the name of the Lord comes after a long time, burning wrath: the word of his lips is with glory, a word full of anger, and the anger of his wrath shall devour as fire.

30:28  And His breath is as an overflowing stream, that divideth even unto the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of destruction; and a bridle that causeth to err shall be in the jaws of the peoples.

28  And his breath, as rushing water in a valley, shall reach as far as the neck, and be divided, to confound the nations for their vain error: error also shall pursue them, and overtake them.

28  His Spirit is like a torrent, inundating, even as high as the middle of the neck, in order to reduce the nations to nothing, along with the bridle of error that was in the jaws of the people.

30:29  Ye shall have a song as in the night when a feast is hallowed; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with the pipe to come into the mountain of YHWH, to the Rock of Israel.

29  Must ye always rejoice, and go into my holy places continually, as they that keep a feast? and must ye go with a pipe, as those that rejoice, into the mountain of the Lord, to the God of Israel?

29  There will be a song for you, as in the night of a sanctified solemnity, and a joy of heart, as when one travels with music to arrive at the mountain of the Lord, to the Strong One of Israel.

30:30  And YHWH will cause His glorious voice to be heard, and will show the lighting down of His arm, with furious anger, and the flame of a devouring fire, with a bursting of clouds, and a storm of rain, and hailstones.

30  And the Lord shall make his glorious voice to be heard, and the wrath of his arm, to make a display with wrath and anger and devouring flame: he shall lighten terribly, and his wrath shall be as water and violent hail.

30  And the Lord will cause the glory of his voice to be heard, and, with a threatening fury and a devouring flame of fire, he will reveal the terror of his arm. He will crush with the whirlwind and with hailstones.

30:31  For through the voice of YHWH shall Asshur be dismayed, the rod with which He smote.

31  For by the voice of the Lord the Assyrians shall be overcome, even by the stroke wherewith he shall smite them.

30:32  And in every place where the appointed staff shall pass, which YHWH shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps; and in battles of wielding will He fight with them.

32  And it shall happen to him from every side, that they from whom their hope of assistance was, in which he trusted, themselves shall war against him in turn with drums and with harp.

30:33  For a hearth is ordered of old; yea, for the king it is prepared, deep and large; the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of YHWH, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.

33  For thou shalt be required before thy time: has it been prepared for thee also to reign? nay, God has prepared for thee a deep trench, wood piled, fire and much wood: the wrath of the Lord shall be as a trench kindled with sulphur.

31:1  Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help, and rely on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many, and in horsemen, because they are exceeding mighty; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek YHWH!

1  Woe to those who descend into Egypt for assistance, hoping in horses, and putting their trust in four-horse chariots because they are many, and in horsemen because they are exceedingly strong. And they have not believed in the Holy One of Israel, and they have not sought the Lord.

31:2  Yet He also is wise, and bringeth evil, and doth not call back His words; but will arise against the house of the evil-doers, and against the help of them that work iniquity.

2  Therefore he has wisely brought evils upon them, and his word shall not be frustrated; and he shall rise up against the houses of wicked men, and against their vain hope,

2  Therefore, being wise, he has permitted harm, and he has not removed his words, and he will rise up against the house of the wicked and against those who assist the workers of iniquity.

31:3  Now the Egyptians are men, and not God, and their horses flesh, and not spirit; so when YHWH shall stretch out His hand, both he that helpeth shall stumble, and he that is helped shall fall, and they all shall perish together.

3  even an Egyptian, a man, and not God; the flesh of horses, and there is no help in them: but the Lord shall bring his hand upon them, and the helpers shall fail, and all shall perish together.

3  Egypt is man, and not God. And their horses are flesh, and not spirit. And so, the Lord will reach down his hand, and the helper will fall, and the one who was being helped will fall, and they will all be consumed together.

31:4  For thus saith YHWH unto me: Like as the lion, or the young lion, growling over his prey, though a multitude of shepherds be called forth against him, will not be dismayed at their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of them; so will the YHWH of hosts come down to fight upon mount Zion, and upon the hill thereof.

4  For thus said the Lord to me, As a lion would roar, or a lion’s whelp over prey which he has taken, and cry over it, until the mountains are filled with his voice, and the animals are awe-struck and tremble at the fierceness of his wrath: so the Lord of hosts shall descend to fight upon the mount Sion, even upon her mountains.

4  For the Lord says this to me: In the same way that a lion roars, and a young lion is over his prey, and though a multitude of shepherds may meet him, he will not dread their voice, nor be afraid of their number, so will the Lord of hosts descend in order to battle upon mount Zion and upon its hill.

31:5  As birds hovering, so will YHWH of hosts protect Jerusalem; He will deliver it as He protecteth it, He will rescue it as He passeth over.

5  As birds flying, so shall the Lord of hosts defend; he shall defend Jerusalem, and he shall rescue, and save and deliver.

5  Like birds flying, so will the Lord of hosts protect Jerusalem, protecting and freeing, passing over and saving.

31:6  Turn ye unto Him against whom ye have deeply rebelled, O children of Israel.

6  Be converted to the same depth that you have drawn away, O sons of Israel.

31:7  For in that day they shall cast away every man his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made unto you for a sin.

7  For in that day men shall renounce their silver idols and their golden idols, which their hands made.

31:8  Then shall Asshur fall with the sword, not of man, and the sword, not of men, shall devour him; and he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall become tributary.

8  And the Assyrian shall fall: not the sword of a great man, nor the sword of a mean man shall devour him; neither shall he flee from the face of the sword: but the young men shall be overthrown

8  And Assur will fall by a sword not of man, and a sword not of man will devour him. And he will not flee from the face of the sword, and his young men will be subject to a penalty.

31:9  And his rock shall pass away by reason of terror, and his princes shall be dismayed at the ensign, saith YHWH, whose fire is in Zion, and His furnace in Jerusalem.

9  for they shall be compassed with rocks as with a trench, and shall be worsted; and he that flees shall be taken. Thus saith the Lord, Blessed is he that has a seed in Sion, and household friends in Jerusalem.

9  And his strength will pass away in terror, and his princes will flee in fear. The Lord has said it. His fire is in Zion, and his furnace is at Jerusalem.

32:1  Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and as for princes, they shall rule in justice.

1  For, behold, a righteous king shall reign, and princes shall govern with judgement.

1  Behold, the king will reign in justice, and the princes will rule in judgment.

32:2  And a man shall be as in a hiding-place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as by the watercourses in a dry place, as in the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

2  And a man shall hide his words, and be hidden, as from rushing water, and shall appear in Sion as a rushing river, glorious in a thirsty land.

2  And a man will be like someone hidden from the wind, who conceals himself from a storm, or like rivers of waters in a time of thirst, or like the shadow of a rock that juts out in a desert land.

32:3  And the eyes of them that see shall not be closed, and the ears of them that hear shall attend.

3  And they shall no more trust in men, but they shall incline their ears to hear.

3  The eyes of those who see will not be obscured, and the ears of those who hear will listen closely.

32:4  The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly.

4  And the heart of the weak ones shall attend to hear, and the stammering tongues shall soon learn to speak peace.

4  And the heart of the foolish will understand knowledge, and the tongue of those with impaired speech will speak quickly and plainly.

32:5  The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be noble.

5  And they shall no more at all tell a fool to rule, and thy servants shall no more at all say, Be silent.

5  He who is foolish will no longer be called leader, nor will the deceitful be called greater.

32:6  For the vile person will speak villainy, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise ungodliness, and to utter wickedness against YHWH, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and to cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.

6  For the fool shall speak foolish words, and his heart shall meditate vanities, and to perform lawless deeds and to speak error against the Lord, to scatter hungry souls, and he will cause the thirsty souls to be empty.

6  For the fool will speak folly, and his heart will work iniquity, to practice hypocrisy and to utter error, to make empty the soul of the hungry and to deprive the thirsty of drink.

32:7  The instruments also of the churl are evil; he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, and the needy when he speaketh right.

7  For the counsel of the wicked will devise iniquity, to destroy the poor with unjust words, and ruin the cause of the poor in judgement.

7  The tools of the deceitful are very wicked. For they have concocted plans to destroy the meek by lying words, though the poor speak judgment.

32:8  But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.

8  Yet truly, the prince will plan things that are worthy of a prince, and he will stand above the rulers.

8  But a great person devises great things, and on his greatness shall he stand.

32:9  Rise up, ye women that are at ease, and hear my voice; ye confident daughters, give ear unto my speech.

9  You opulent women, rise up and listen to my voice! O confident daughters, play close attention to my eloquence!

9  Rise up, O you rich women; hear my voice, O you daughters that publish glad tidings, give ear to my speech.

32:10  After a year and days shall ye be troubled, ye confident women; for the vintage shall fail, the ingathering shall not come.

32:11  Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye confident ones; strip you, and make you bare, and gird sackcloth upon your loins,

11  Be amazed, be pained, ye confident ones: strip you, bare yourselves, gird your loins;

11  Be stupefied, you opulent women! Be disturbed, O confident ones! Strip yourselves, and be confounded; gird yourselves at the waist.

32:12  Smiting upon the breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine;

12  and beat your breasts, because of the pleasant field, and the fruit of the vine.

12  Mourn over your breasts, over the delightful country, over the fruitful vineyard.

32:13  For the land of my people whereon thorns and briers come up; yea, for all the houses of joy and the joyous city.

13  Thorn and brier will rise up, over the soil of my people. How much more over all the houses of gladness, over the city of exultation?

13  Upon the land of my people shall grow up thorns and briers; yea, upon all the houses of mirth in the mighty city;

32:14  For the palace shall be forsaken; the city with its stir shall be deserted; the mound and the tower shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild asses, a pasture of flocks;

14  As for the rich city, the houses are deserted; they shall abandon the wealth of the city, and the pleasant houses: and the villages shall be caves for ever, the joy of wild asses, shepherds’ pastures;

14  For the house has been forsaken. The multitude of the city has been abandoned. A darkness and a covering have been placed over its dens, even unto eternity. It will be the gladness of wild donkeys and the pasture of flocks,

32:15  Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness become a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.

15  until the Spirit shall come upon you from on high, and Chermel shall be desert, and Chermel shall be counted for a forest.

32:16  Then justice shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness shall abide in the fruitful field.

16  Then judgement shall abide in the wilderness, and righteousness shall dwell in Carmel.

16  And judgment will live in solitude, and justice will be seated in a fruitful place.

32:17  And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and confidence for ever.

17  And the works of righteousness shall be peace; and righteousness shall ensure rest, and the righteous shall be confident for ever.

17  And the work of justice will be peace. And the service of justice will be quiet and secure, forever.

32:18  And my people shall abide in a peaceable habitation, and in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting-places.

18  And his people shall inhabit a city of peace, and dwell in it in confidence, and they shall rest with wealth.

18  And my people will be seated in the beauty of peacefulness, and in the tabernacles of faithfulness, and in the opulence of restfulness.

32:19  And it shall hail, in the downfall of the forest; but the city shall descend into the valley.

19  And if the hail should come down, it shall not come upon you; and they that dwell in the forests shall be in confidence, as those in the plain country.

19  But hail will be in the descent of the forest, and the city will be brought exceedingly low.

32:20  Happy are ye that sow beside all waters, that send forth freely the feet of the ox and the ass.

20  Blessed are they that sow by every water, where the ox and ass tread.

20  Blessed are you who sow over any waters, sending the feet of the ox and the donkey there.

33:1  Woe to thee that spoilest, and thou wast not spoiled; and dealest treacherously, and they dealt not treacherously with thee! When thou hast ceased to spoil, thou shalt be spoiled; and when thou art weary with dealing treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with thee.

1  Woe to you who plunder! Will you yourselves not also be plundered? And woe to you who despise! Will you yourselves not also be despised? When you will have completed your plundering, you will be plundered. When, out of fatigue, you will have ceased acting with contempt, you will be treated with contempt.

1  WOE to you that plunder, but you shall not plunder, and let no one deal treacherously among you; for when you seek to plunder, they will plunder you; and when you seek to deal treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with you.

33:2  O YHWH, be gracious unto us; we have waited for Thee; be Thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble.

33:3  At the noise of the tumult the peoples are fled; at the lifting up of Thyself the nations are scattered.

3  By reason of the terrible sound the nations were dismayed for fear of thee, and the heathen were scattered.

3  From the voice of the Angel, the people fled. And from your exultation, the nations were scattered.

33:4  And your spoil is gathered as the caterpillar gathereth; as locusts leap do they leap upon it.

4  And now shall the spoils of your small and great be gathered: as if one should gather locusts, so shall they mock you.

4  Henceforth your spoil shall be gathered like the gathering of the caterpillar; as a swarm of locusts when it is gathered together.

33:5  YHWH is exalted, for He dwelleth on high; He hath filled Zion with justice and righteousness.

5  The God who dwells on high is holy: Sion is filled with judgement and righteousness.

5  The Lord has been magnified, because he has lived on high. He has filled Zion with judgment and justice.

33:6  And the stability of thy times shall be a hoard of salvation--wisdom and knowledge, and the fear of YHWH which is His treasure.

6  They shall be delivered up to the law: our salvation is our treasure: there are wisdom and knowledge and piety toward the Lord; these are the treasures of righteousness.

6  And faith shall be the stability of your times, and your salvation in a place of refuge; wisdom and knowledge and the reverence of the LORD is his treasure.

33:7  Behold, their valiant ones cry without; the ambassadors of peace weep bitterly.

7  Behold now, these shall be terrified with fear of you: those whom ye feared shall cry out because of you: messengers shall be sent, bitterly weeping, entreating for peace.

7  If he should be seen by them they shall howl violently; the ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly.

33:8  The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceaseth; he hath broken the covenant, he hath despised the cities, he regardeth not man.

8  For the ways of these shall be made desolate: the terror of the nations has been made to cease, and the covenant with these is taken away, and ye shall by no means deem them men.

8  The roads have become desolate. Travelers have ceased along the paths. The covenant has been nullified. He has tossed aside cities. He has disregarded men.

33:9  The land mourneth and languisheth; Lebanon is ashamed, it withereth; Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel are clean bare.

9  The earth has mourned and languished. Lebanon has been confounded and desecrated. And Sharon has become like a desert. And Bashan and Carmel have been struck together.

9  The earth mourns and languishes; Lebanon is ashamed and confounded; Sharon has become like a desert plain; and Bashan and Carmel are desolate.

33:10  Now will I arise, saith YHWH; now will I be exalted; now will I lift Myself up.

10  “Now, I will rise up!” says the Lord. “Now I will be exalted! Now I will lift myself up!”

33:11  Ye conceive chaff, ye shall bring forth stubble; your breath is a fire that shall devour you.

11  Now shall ye see, now shall ye perceive; the strength of your breath, shall be vain; fire shall devour you.

11  You will conceive heat. You will give birth to stubble. Your own spirit will devour you like fire.

33:12  And the peoples shall be as the burnings of lime; as thorns cut down, that are burned in the fire.

12  And the nations shall be burnt up; as a thorn in the field cast out and burnt up.

12  And the people will be like the ashes from a fire. They will be consumed by fire like a bundle of thorns.

33:13  Hear, ye that are far off, what I have done; and, ye that are near, acknowledge My might.

13  They that are afar off shall hear what I have done; they that draw nigh shall know my strength.

13  “You who are far away, listen to what I have done! And you who are near, acknowledge my strength!”

33:14  The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling hath seized the ungodly: 'Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?'

14  The sinners in Sion have departed; trembling shall seize the ungodly. Who will tell you that a fire is kindled? Who will tell you of the eternal place?

14  The sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling has taken hold of the hypocrites. Who among you is able to live with a devouring fire? Who among you will live with an everlasting flame?

33:15  He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from looking upon evil;

15  The one who walks in justice and speaks the truth, who casts out avarice with oppression and shakes all bribes from his hands, who blocks his ears so that he may not listen to blood, and closes his eyes so that he may not see evil.

15  He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly; he who despises treachery and oppression, who refuses to accept a bribe, who stops his ears that he may not hear of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes that he may not see evil.

33:16  He shall dwell on high; his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks; his bread shall be given, his waters shall be sure.

16  he shall dwell in a high cave of a strong rock: bread shall be given him, and his water shall be sure.

16  Such a one will live on high; the fortification of rocks will be his lofty place. Bread has been given to him; his waters are reliable.

33:17  Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty; they shall behold a land stretching afar.

17  Ye shall see a king with glory: your eyes shall behold a land from afar.

17  His eyes will see the king in his elegance; they will discern the land from far away.

33:18  Thy heart shall muse on the terror: 'Where is he that counted, where is he that weighed? Where is he that counted the towers?'

18  Your heart will meditate on fear. Where are the learned? Where are those who ponder the words of the law? Where are the teachers of little ones?

33:19  Thou shalt not see the fierce people; a people of a deep speech that thou canst not perceive, of a stammering tongue that thou canst not understand.

19  even the small and great people? with whom he took not counsel, neither did he understand a people of deep speech, so that a despised people should not hear, and there is no understanding to him that hears.

19  You will not look upon a shameless people, a people of exalted words. For you are not able to understand the dissertation of a tongue in which there is no wisdom.

33:20  Look upon Zion, the city of our solemn gatherings; thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a peaceful habitation, a tent that shall not be removed, the stakes whereof shall never be plucked up, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken.

20  Behold the city of Sion, our refuge: thine eyes shall behold Jerusalem, a rich city, tabernacles which shall not be shaken, neither shall the pins of her tabernacle be moved for ever, neither shall her cords be at all broken

20  Look with favor upon Zion, the city of our solemnity. Your eyes will behold Jerusalem: an opulent habitation, a tabernacle that can never be taken away. Its stakes will not be taken away forever, nor will any of its cords be broken.

33:21  But there YHWH will be with us in majesty, in a place of broad rivers and streams; wherein shall go no galley with oars, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby.

21  For only in that place has our Lord been magnified. It is a place of rivers, very broad and open. No ship with oars will cross through it, nor will the great Greek ship pass through it.

21  For there the name of the LORD is glorious to us; he will be for us a place of light, an enlightenment, and an open space made by the hand; wherein the authority of a prince shall not reign, neither shall the mighty one be able to invade it.

33:22  For YHWH is our Judge, the YHWH is our Lawgiver, the LORD is our King; He will save us.

22  For my God is great: the Lord our judge shall not pass me by: the Lord is our prince, the Lord is our king; the Lord, he shall save us.

22  For the Lord is our judge. The Lord is our lawgiver. The Lord is our king. He himself will save us.

33:23  Thy tacklings are loosed; they do not hold the stand of their mast, they do not spread the sail; then is the prey of a great spoil divided; the lame take the prey.

23  Thy cords are broken, for they had no strength: thy meat has given way, it shall not spread the sails, it shall not bear a signal, until it be given up for plunder; therefore shall many lame men take spoil.

23  Your ropes have become loose, and they will not prevail. Your mast will be such that you will not be able to unfurl a flag. Then the spoils of much plunder will be divided. The lame will seize the spoils.

33:24  And the inhabitant shall not say: 'I am sick'; the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity.

24  And the people dwelling among them shall by no means say, I am in pain: for their sin shall be forgiven them.

24  He who is nearby will not say: “I am too weak.” The people who live in it will have their iniquity taken away from them.

34:1  Come near, ye nations, to hear, and attend, ye peoples; let the earth hear, and the fulness thereof, the world, and all things that come forth of it.

1  Draw near, ye nations; and hearken, ye princes; let the earth hear, and they that are in it; the world, and the people that are therein.

1  O nations and peoples: draw near, and listen, and pay attention! Let the earth and its fullness hear, the entire world and all its offspring.

34:2  For YHWH hath indignation against all the nations, and fury against all their host; He hath utterly destroyed them, He hath delivered them to the slaughter.

2  For the wrath of the Lord is upon all nations, and his anger upon the number of them, to destroy them, and give them up to slaughter.

2  For the indignation of the Lord is over all the nations, and his fury is over all their armies. He has put them to death, and he has given them over to slaughter.

34:3  Their slain also shall be cast out, and the stench of their carcasses shall come up, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood.

3  And their slain shall be cast forth, and their corpses; and their ill savour shall come up, and the mountains shall be made wet with their blood.

3  Their slain will be cast out, and from their carcasses a foul odor will rise up. The mountains will languish because of their blood.

34:4  And all the host of heaven shall moulder away, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll; and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig- tree.

4  And all the powers of the heavens shall melt, and the sky shall be rolled up like a scroll: and all the stars shall fall like leaves from a vine, and as leaves fall from a fig-tree.

4  And the entire army of the heavens will languish, and the heavens will be folded like a book. And their entire army will fall away, as a leaf falls from the vine or from the fig tree.

34:5  For My sword hath drunk its fill in heaven; behold, it shall come down upon Edom, and upon the people of My ban, to judgment.

5  My sword has been made drunk in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and with judgement upon the people doomed to destruction.

5  “For my sword in heaven has been inebriated. Behold, it will descend upon Idumea, and upon the people of my slaughter, unto judgment.”

34:6  The sword of YHWH is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams; for the YHWH hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

6  The sword of the Lord has been filled with blood. It has been thickened by the blood of lambs and he-goats, by the innermost blood of rams. For the victim of the Lord is in Bozrah, and a great slaughter is in the land of Edom.

34:7  And the wild-oxen shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be drunken with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness.

7  And the single-horned beasts will descend with them, and the bulls along with the mighty. Their land will be inebriated by blood, and their ground by the fat of their lazy ones.

34:8  For YHWH hath a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the controversy of Zion.

8  For it is the day of judgement of the Lord, and the year of the recompence of Sion in judgement.

8  For this is the day of the vengeance of the Lord, the year of retribution for the judgment of Zion.

34:9  And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch.

9  And her valleys shall be turned into pitch, and her land into sulphur; and her land shall be as pitch burning night and day;

9  And its torrents will be turned into tar, and its soil into sulfur. And its land will become burning tar.

34:10  It shall not be quenched night nor day, the smoke thereof shall go up for ever; from generation to generation it shall lie waste: none shall pass through it for ever and ever.

10  and it shall never be quenched, and her smoke shall go up: it shall be made desolate throughout her generations,

10  Night and day, it will not be extinguished; its smoke will rise up without ceasing. From generation to generation it will remain desolate. No one will pass through it, forever and ever.

34:11  But the pelican and the bittern shall possess it, and the owl and the raven shall dwell therein; and He shall stretch over it the line of confusion, and the plummet of emptiness.

11  and for a long time birds and hedgehogs, and ibises and ravens shall dwell in it: and the measuring line of desolation shall be cast over it, and satyrs shall dwell in it.

11  The pelican and the hedgehog will possess it. And the ibis and the raven will live in it. And a measuring line will be extended over it, so that it may be reduced to nothing, and a plumb line, unto desolation.

34:12  As for her nobles, none shall be there to be called to the kingdom; and all her princes shall be nothing.

34:13  And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and thistles in the fortresses thereof; and it shall be a habitation of wild-dogs, an enclosure for ostriches.

13  And thorns and nettles will rise up in its houses, and the thistle in its fortified places. And it will be the lair of serpents and the pasture of ostriches.

34:14  And the wild-cats shall meet with the jackals, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; yea, the night-monster shall repose there, and shall find her a place of rest.

14  And devils shall meet with satyrs, and they shall cry one to the other: there shall satyrs rest, having found for themselves a place of rest.

14  And demons and monsters will meet, and the hairy ones will cry out to one another. There, the ogress has lain down and found rest for herself.

34:15  There shall the arrowsnake make her nest, and lay, and hatch, and brood under her shadow; yea, there shall the kites be gathered, every one with her mate.

15  There has the hedgehog made its nest, and the earth has safely preserved its young: there have the deer met, and seen one another’s faces.

15  In that place, the hedgehog has kept its den, and has raised its young, and has dug around them, and has kept them warm in its shadow. In that place, the birds of prey have joined together, one to another.

34:16  Seek ye out of the book of YHWH, and read; no one of these shall be missing, none shall want her mate; for My mouth it hath commanded, and the breath thereof it hath gathered them.

16  They passed by in full number, and not one of them perished: they sought not one another; for the Lord commanded them, and his Spirit gathered them.

34:17  And He hath cast the lot for them, and His hand hath divided it unto them by line; they shall possess it for ever, from generation to generation shall they dwell therein.

17  And he shall cast lots for them, and his hand has portioned out their pasture, saying, Ye shall inherit the land for ever: they shall rest on it through all generations.

17  And he has cast lots over them. And his hand has distributed this to them by measure. They will possess it, even unto eternity. From generation to generation, they will dwell in it.

35:1  The wilderness and the parched land shall be glad; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.

1  Be glad, thou thirsty desert: let the wilderness exult, and flower as the lily.

1  The desolate and impassable land will rejoice, and the place of solitude will exult, and it will flourish like the lily.

35:2  It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice, even with joy and singing; the glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon; they shall see the glory of YHWH, the excellency of our God.

35:3  Strengthen ye the weak hands, and make firm the tottering knees.

3  Be strong, ye relaxed hands and palsied knees.

35:4  Say to them that are of a fearful heart: 'Be strong, fear not'; behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God He will come and save you.

4  Comfort one another, ye fainthearted; be strong, fear not; behold, our God renders judgement, and he will render it; he will come and save us.

35:5  Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.

35:6  Then shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing; for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.

6  Then the disabled will leap like a buck, and the tongue of the mute will be untied. For the waters have burst forth in the desert, and torrents in solitary places.

35:7  And the parched land shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; in the habitation of jackals herds shall lie down, it shall be an enclosure for reeds and rushes.

7  And the land that was dry will have a pond, and the thirsty land will have fountains of water. In the hollows where the serpents lived before, there will rise up the greenery of reed and bulrush.

35:8  And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those; the wayfaring men, yea fools, shall not err therein.

8  There shall be there a pure way, and it shall be called a holy way; and there shall not pass by there any unclean person, neither shall there be there an unclean way; but the dispersed shall walk on it, and they shall not go astray.

8  And there shall be a path and a road in that place. And it will be called the Holy Way. The defiled will not pass through it. For this will be an upright path for you, so much so that the foolish will not wander along it.

35:9  No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast go up thereon, they shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there;

9  And there shall be no lion there, neither shall any evil beast go up upon it, nor at all be found there; but the redeemed and gathered on the Lord’s behalf, shall walk in it,

9  There will be no lions in that place, and harmful wild animals will neither climb up to it, nor be found there. Only those who have been freed will walk in that place.

35:10  And the ransomed of YHWH shall return, and come with singing unto Zion, and everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

10  and shall return, and come to Sion with joy, and everlasting joy shall be over their head; for on their head shall be praise and exultation, and joy shall take possession of them: sorrow and pain, and groaning have fled away.

10  And the redeemed of the Lord will be converted, and they will return to Zion with praising. And everlasting joy will be upon their heads. They will obtain gladness and rejoicing. For pain and sorrow will flee away.

36:1  Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and took them.

1  And it happened that, in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib, the king of the Assyrians, went up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and he seized them.

36:2  And the king of Assyria sent Rab-shakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fullers' field.

36:3  Then came forth unto him Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.

36:4  And Rab-shakeh said unto them: 'Say ye now to Hezekiah: Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria: What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?

4  And Rabsaces said to them, Say to Ezekias, Thus says the great king, the king of the Assyrians, Why art thou secure?

4  And Rabshakeh said to them: “Tell Hezekiah: Thus says the great king, the king of the Assyrians: What is this faith in which you believe?

36:5  I said: It is but vain words; for counsel and strength are for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou hast rebelled against me?

5  And by what counsel or strength would you prepare to rebel? In whom do you have faith, so much so that you would withdraw from me?

5  Saying, I am an eloquent speaker, and have counsel and strength for war; now on whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?

36:6  Behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it; so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust on him.

6  Behold, you are trusting in Egypt, in that broken staff of a reed. But if a man were to lean against it, it would enter his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, to all who trust in him.

6  Behold, you trust in the staff of this broken reed, in the Egyptian; on which, when a man lean, it will go into his hand and pierce it; so is Pharaoh, king of Egypt, to all who trust in him.

36:7  But if thou say unto me: We trust in YHWH our God; is not that He, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and to Jerusalem: Ye shall worship before this altar?

7  But it ye say, We trust in the Lord our God;

36:8  Now therefore, I pray thee, make a wager with my master, the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.

8  yet now make an agreement with my lord the king of the Assyrians, and I will give you two thousand horses, if ye shall be able to set riders upon them.

8  And now, hand yourselves over to my lord, the king of the Assyrians, and I will give you two thousand horses, and you will not be able to find riders for them on your own.

36:9  How then canst thou turn away the face of one captain, even of the least of my master's servants? yet thou puttest thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen!

9  And how can ye then turn to the face of the satraps? They that trust on the Egyptians for horse and rider, are our servants.

9  So how will you withstand the face of the ruler of even one place, of even the least of my lord’s subordinates? But if you trust in Egypt, in four-horse chariots and in horsemen

36:10  And am I now come up without YHWH against this land to destroy it? YHWH said unto me: Go up against this land, and destroy it.'

10  And now, Have we come up against this land to fight against it without the Lord? The Lord said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

10  do I intend to go up against this land to destroy it without the Lord? But the Lord said to me, ‘Go up against this land, and destroy it.’ ”

36:11  Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rab-shakeh: 'Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Aramean language, for we understand it; and speak not to us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.'

11  Then Eliakim and Somnas and Joach said to him, Speak to thy servants in the Syrian tongue; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jewish tongue: and wherefore speakest thou in the ears of the men on the wall?

11  And Eliakim, and Shebna, and Joah said to Rabshakeh: “Speak to your servants in the Syrian language. For we understand it. Do not speak to us in the Jewish language, in the hearing of the people, who are upon the wall.”

36:12  But Rab-shakeh said: 'Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, to eat their own dung, and to drink their own water with you?'

12  And Rabshakeh said to them: “Has my lord sent me to your lord and to you in order to speak all these words, and not even more so to the men who are sitting on the wall, so that they may eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”

36:13  Then Rab-shakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said: 'Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.

36:14  Thus saith the king: Let not Hezekiah beguile you, for he will not be able to deliver you;

14  thus says the king, Let not Ezekias deceive you with words: he will not be able to deliver you.

36:15  neither let Hezekiah make you trust in YHWH, saying: YHWH will surely deliver us; this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

15  And let not Ezekias say to you, That God will deliver you, and this city will not at all be delivered into the hand of the king of the Assyrians.

15  And do not let Hezekiah cause you to trust in the Lord, saying: ‘The Lord will rescue and free us. This city will not be given into the hands of the king of the Assyrians.’

36:16  Hearken not to Hezekiah; for thus saith the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig-tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;

16  Do not listen to Hezekiah. For the king of the Assyrians says this: Act with me to your own benefit, and come out to me. And let each one eat from his own vine, and each one from his own fig tree. And let each one drink water from his own well,

36:17  until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

17  until I arrive and take you away to a land which is like your own: a land of grain and of wine, a land of bread and of vineyards.

36:18  Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying: YHWH will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

18  Let not Ezekias deceive you, saying, God will deliver you. Have the gods of the nations delivered each one his own land out of the hand of the king of the Assyrians?

18  But you should not let Hezekiah disturb you, saying, ‘The Lord will deliver us.’ Have any of the gods of each of the nations delivered their land from the hand of the king of the Assyrians?

36:19  Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?

19  Where is the god of Emath, and Arphath? and where is the god of Eppharuaim? have they been able to deliver Samaria out of my hand?

36:20  Who are they among all the gods of these countries, that have delivered their country out of my hand, that YHWH should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'

20  Which is the god of all these nations, that has delivered his land out of my hand, that God should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

36:21  But they held their peace, and answered him not a word; for the king's commandment was, saying: 'Answer him not.'

21  And they were silent, and none answered him a word; because the king had commanded that none should answer.

21  And they remained silent and did not answer a word to him. For the king had commanded them, saying, “You shall not respond to him.”

36:22  Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rab-shakeh.

22  And Heliakim the son of Chelcias, the steward, and Somnas the military scribe, and Joach the son of Asaph, the recorder, came in to Ezekias, having their garments rent, and they reported to him the words of Rabsaces.

22  And Eliakim, son of Hilkiah, who was over the house, and Shebna, the scribe, and Joah, son of Asaph, the historian, entered to Hezekiah with their garments rent, and they reported to him the words of Rabshakeh.

37:1  And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of YHWH.

1  And it happened that, when king Hezekiah had heard this, he rent his garments, and he wrapped himself in sackcloth, and he entered the house of the Lord.

37:2  And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

2  And he sent Heliakim the steward, and Somnas the scribe, and the elders of the priests clothed with sackcloth, to Esaias the son of Amos, the prophet. And they said to him, Thus says Ezekias,

37:3  And they said unto him: 'Thus saith Hezekiah: This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of contumely; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.

3  To-day is a day of affliction, and reproach, and rebuke, and anger: for the pangs are come upon the travailing woman, but she has not strength to bring forth.

37:4  It may be YHWH thy God will hear the words of Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to taunt the living God, and will rebuke the words which the YHWH thy God hath heard; wherefore make prayer for the remnant that is left.'

4  May the Lord thy God hear the words of Rabsaces, which the king of the Assyrians has sent, to reproach the living God, even to reproach with the words which the Lord thy God has heard: therefore thou shalt pray to thy Lord for these that are left.

4  Perhaps, somehow, the Lord your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of the Assyrians, his lord, has sent to blaspheme the living God, and will rebuke the words that the Lord your God has heard. Therefore, lift up your prayers on behalf of the remnant which has been left behind.”

37:5  So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

37:6  And Isaiah said unto them: 'Thus shall ye say to your master: Thus saith YHWH: Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me.

6  And Esaias said to them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the Lord, Be not thou afraid at the words which thou hast heard, wherewith the ambassadors of the king of the Assyrians have reproached me,

37:7  Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear a rumour, and shall return unto his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.'

37:8  So Rab-shakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

8  So Rabsaces returned, and found the king of the Assyrians besieging Lobna: for he had heard that he had departed from Lachis.

8  Then Rabshakeh returned, and he found the king of the Assyrians fighting against Libnah. For he had heard that he had set out from Lachish.

37:9  And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia: 'He is come out to fight against thee.' And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying

9  And Tharaca king of the Ethiopians went forth to attack him. And when he heard it, he turned aside, and sent messengers to Ezekias, saying,

9  And he heard from Tirhakah, the king of Ethiopia: “He has gone forth so that he may fight against you.” And when he had heard this, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying

37:10  'Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying: Let not thy God in whom thou trustest beguile thee, saying: Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

37:11  Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered?

11  Hast thou not heard what the kings of the Assyrians have done, how they have destroyed the whole earth? and shalt thou be delivered?

11  Behold, you have heard about all that the kings of the Assyrians have done to all the lands that they have conquered, and so, how can you be delivered?

37:12  Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden that were in Telassar?

37:13  Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?'

13  Where are the kings of Emath? and where is the king of Arphath? and where is the king of the city of Eppharuaim, and of Anagugana?

37:14  And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up unto the house of YHWH, and spread it before the YHWH.

14  And Ezekias received the letter from the messengers, and read it, and went up to the house of the Lord, and opened it before the Lord.

14  And Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers, and he read it, and he went up to the house of the Lord, and Hezekiah spread it out in the sight of the Lord.

37:15  And Hezekiah prayed unto YHWH, saying

15  And Ezekias prayed to the Lord, saying,

37:16  'O YHWH of hosts, the God of Israel, that sittest upon the cherubim, Thou art the God, even Thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; Thou hast made heaven and earth.

16  O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, who sittest upon the cherubs, thou alone art the God of every kingdom of the world: thou hast made heaven and earth.

37:17  Incline Thine ear, O YHWH, and hear; open Thine eyes, O LORD, and see; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, who hath sent to taunt the living God.

17  O Lord, incline your ear and listen. O Lord, open your eyes and see. And hear all the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to blaspheme the living God.

37:18  Of a truth, YHWH, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the countries, and their land,

18  For of a truth, Lord, the kings of the Assyrians have laid waste the whole world, and the countries thereof,

18  For truly, O Lord, the kings of the Assyrians have laid waste to countries and territories.

37:19  and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.

19  And they have cast their gods into the fire. For these were not gods, but the works of men’s hands, of wood and of stone. And they broke them into pieces.

19  And have burned their lands and their gods with fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, of wood, of silver, and of stone; therefore they have destroyed them.

37:20  Now therefore, O YHWH our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that Thou art YHWH, even Thou only.'

20  But now, O Lord our God, deliver us from his hands, that every kingdom of the earth may know that thou art God alone.

20  And now, O Lord our God, save us from his hand. And let all the kingdoms of the earth acknowledge that you alone are Lord.”

37:21  Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying: 'Thus saith YHWH, the God of Israel: Whereas thou hast prayed to Me against Sennacherib king of Assyria,

21  And Esaias the son of Amos was sent to Ezekias, and said to him, Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, I have heard thy prayer to me concerning Sennacherim king of the Assyrians.

37:22  this is the word which YHWH hath spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion hath despised thee and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

37:23  Whom hast thou taunted and blasphemed? And against whom hast thou exalted thy voice? Yea, thou hast lifted up thine eyes on high, even against the Holy One of Israel!

23  Whom have you insulted? And whom have you blasphemed? And against whom have you lifted up your voice and raised up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel!

37:24  By thy servants hast thou taunted YHWH, and hast said: With the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon; and I have cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice cypress-trees thereof; and I have entered into his farthest height, the forest of his fruitful field.

37:25  I have digged and drunk water, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of Egypt.

25  and I have made a bridge, and dried up the waters, and every pool of water.

37:26  Hast thou not heard? Long ago I made it, in ancient times I fashioned it; now have I brought it to pass, yea, it is done; that fortified cities should be laid waste into ruinous heaps.

26  Have you not heard what I have done to it in past times? In ancient times, I formed it. And now I have brought it forth. And it has been made so that the hills and the fortified cities would fight together, unto its destruction.

37:27  Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as a field of corn before it is grown up.

27  I weakened their hands, and they withered; and they became as dry grass on the house-tops, and as grass.

37:28  But I know thy sitting down, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy raging against Me.

28  But now I know thy rest, and thy going out, and thy coming in.

28  I know your habitation, and your arrival, and your departure, and your madness against me.

37:29  Because of thy raging against Me, and for that thine uproar is come up into Mine ears, therefore will I put My hook in thy nose, and My bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.

29  When you became angry against me, your arrogance rose up to my ears. Therefore, I will place a ring in your nose, and a bit between your lips. And I will turn you back on the road by which you arrived.

29  Because you have dared in my presence and your blasphemous words have come up into my ears, therefore I will put a hook in your nose and a bit between your lips, and I will cause you to return by the way by which you came.

37:30  And this shall be the sign unto thee: ye shall eat this year that which groweth of itself, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.

30  But this shall be a sign for you: Eat, in this year, whatever springs up on its own. And in the second year, eat fruits. But in the third year, sow and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.

30  And this shall be a sign for you: You shall eat this year such as grows of itself; and the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year you shall sow and reap and plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

37:31  And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

31  And they that are left in Judea shall take root downward, and bear fruit upward

31  And what will be saved from the house of Judah, and what is left behind, will form deep roots, and will bear high fruits.

37:32  For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and out of mount Zion they that shall escape; the zeal of YHWH of hosts shall perform this.

32  For from Jerusalem, a remnant shall go forth, and salvation from mount Zion. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

37:33  Therefore thus saith YHWH concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come unto this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast a mound against it.

33  For this reason, thus says the Lord about the king of the Assyrians: He will not enter this city, nor shoot an arrow into it, nor overtake it with a shield, nor dig a rampart all around it.

37:34  By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come unto this city, saith YHWH.

34  But by the way by which he came, by it shall he return, and shall not enter into this city: thus saith the Lord.

34  He will return on the road by which he arrived. And into this city, he will not enter, says the Lord.

37:35  For I will defend this city to save it, for Mine own sake, and for My servant David's sake.'

35  I will protect this city to save it for my own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.

35  And I will protect this city, so that I may save it for my own sake, and for the sake of David, my servant.”

37:36  And the angel of YHWH went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand; and when men arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

36  And the angel of the Lord went forth, and slew out of the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty-five thousand: and they arose in the morning and found all these bodies dead.

36  Then the Angel of the Lord went forth and struck down, in the camp of the Assyrians, one hundred eighty-five thousand. And they arose in the morning, and behold, all these were dead bodies.

37:37  So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went, and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.

37  And Sennacherim king of the Assyrians turned and departed, and dwelt in Nineve.

37:38  And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sarezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

38  And while he was worshipping Nasarach his country’s god in the house, Adramelech and Sarasar his sons smote him with swords; and they escaped into Armenia: and Asordan his son reigned in his stead.

38  And it happened that, as he was adoring his god in the temple of Nisroch, his sons, Adramelech and Sharezer, struck him with the sword. And they fled into the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon, his son, reigned in his place.

38:1  In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him: 'Thus saith YHWH: Set thy house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.'

1  And it came to pass at that time, that Ezekias was sick even to death. And Esaias the prophet the son of Amos came to him, and said to him, Thus saith the Lord, Give orders concerning thy house: for thou shalt die, and not live.

1  In those days Hezekiah became ill and was near death. And so, Isaiah, the son of Amoz, the prophet, entered to him, and he said to him: “Thus says the Lord: Put your house in order, for you shall die, and you shall not live.”

38:2  Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto YHWH,

2  And Ezekias turned his face to the wall, and prayed to the Lord, saying,

2  And Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and he prayed to the Lord.

38:3  and said: 'Remember now, O YHWH, I beseech Thee, how I have walked before Thee in truth and with a whole heart, and have done that which is good in Thy sight.' And Hezekiah wept sore.

3  Remember, O Lord, how I have walked before thee in truth, with a true heart, and have done that which was pleasing in thy sight. And Ezekias wept bitterly.

3  And he said: “I beg you, Lord, I beseech you, to remember how I walked before you in truth and with a whole heart, and that I have done what is good in your sight.” And Hezekiah wept with a great weeping.

38:4  Then came the word of YHWH to Isaiah, saying

4  And the word of the Lord came to Esaias, saying, Go, and say to Ezekias,

38:5  'Go, and say to Hezekiah: Thus saith YHWH, the God of David thy father: I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears; behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.

5  Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, and seen thy tears: behold, I will add to thy time fifteen years.

5  “Go and say to Hezekiah: Thus says the Lord, the God of David, your father: I have heard your prayer, and I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your days.

38:6  And I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city.

38:7  And this shall be the sign unto thee from YHWH, that the YHWH will do this thing that He hath spoken

7  And this shall be a sign to thee from the Lord, that God will do this thing;

7  And this will be a sign for you from the Lord, that the Lord will do this word, which he has spoken

38:8  behold, I will cause the shadow of the dial, which is gone down on the sun-dial of Ahaz, to return backward ten degrees.' So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.

8  behold, I will turn back the shadow of the degrees of the dial by which ten degrees on the house of thy father the sun has gone down—I will turn back the sun the ten degrees; so the sun went back the ten degrees by which the shadow had gone down.

38:9  The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick, and was recovered of his sickness.

38:10  I said: In the noontide of my days I shall go, even to the gates of the nether-world; I am deprived of the residue of my years.

38:11  I said: I shall not see YHWH, even the YHWH in the land of the living; I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.

11  I said, I shall no more at all see the salvation of God in the land of the living: I shall no more at all see the salvation of Israel on the earth: I shall no more at all see man.

38:12  My habitation is plucked up and carried away from me as a shepherd's tent; I have rolled up like a weaver my life; He will cut me off from the thrum; from day even to night wilt Thou make an end of me.

12  My life has failed from among my kindred: I have parted with the remainder of my life: it has gone forth and departed from me, as one that having pitched a tent takes it down again: my breath was with me as a weaver’s web, when she that weaves draws nigh to cut off the thread.

12  My longevity has been taken away; it has been folded up and taken from me, like the tent of a shepherd. My life has been cut off, as if by a weaver. While I was still beginning, he cut me off. From morning until evening, you have marked out my limits.

38:13  The more I make myself like unto a lion until morning, the more it breaketh all my bones; from day even to night wilt Thou make an end of me.

38:14  Like a swallow or a crane, so do I chatter, I do moan as a dove; mine eyes fail with looking upward. O YHWH, I am oppressed, be Thou my surety.

14  As a swallow, so will I cry, and as a dove, so do I mourn: for mine eyes have failed with looking to the height of heaven to the Lord, who has delivered me,

14  I will cry out, like a young swallow. I will meditate, like a dove. My eyes have been weakened by gazing upward. O Lord, I suffer violence! Answer in my favor.

38:15  What shall I say? He hath both spoken unto me, and Himself hath done it; I shall go softly all my years for the bitterness of my soul.

15  and removed the sorrow of my soul.

15  What can I say, or what would he answer me, since he himself has done this? I will acknowledge to you all my years, in the bitterness of my soul.

38:16  O Lord, by these things men live, and altogether therein is the life of my spirit; wherefore recover Thou me, and make me to live.

16  Yea, O Lord, for it was told thee concerning this; and thou hast revived my breath; and I am comforted, and live.

16  O Lord, if such is life, and if the life of my spirit is of such a kind, may you correct me and may you cause me to live.

38:17  Behold, for my peace I had great bitterness; but Thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption; for Thou hast cast all my sins behind Thy back.

17  For thou hast chosen my soul, that it should not perish: and thou hast cast all my sins behind me.

38:18  For the nether-world cannot praise Thee, death cannot celebrate Thee; they that go down into the pit cannot hope for Thy truth.

18  For they that are in the grave shall not praise thee, neither shall the dead bless thee, neither shall they that are in Hades hope for thy mercy.

18  For Hell will not confess to you, and death will not praise you. Those who descend into the pit will not hope for your truth.

38:19  The living, the living, he shall praise Thee, as I do this day; the father to the children shall make known Thy truth.

19  The living shall bless thee, as I also do: for from this day shall I beget children, who shall declare thy righteousness,

38:20  YHWH is ready to save me; therefore we will sing songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of YHWH.

20  O God of my salvation; and I will not cease blessing thee with the psaltery all the days of my life before the house of God.

20  O Lord, save me! And we will sing our psalms, all the days of our life, in the house of the Lord.”

38:21  And Isaiah said: 'Let them take a cake of figs, and lay it for a plaster upon the boil, and he shall recover.'

21  Now Esaias had said to Ezekias; Take a cake of figs, and mash them, and apply them as a plaster, and thou shalt be well.

21  And Hezekiah said, What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of the LORD?

38:22  And Hezekiah said. 'What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of YHWH?'

22  And Ezekias said, This is a sign to Ezekias, that I shall go up to the house of God.

22  And Isaiah said, Let them take a lump of figs, and lay it as a plaster upon the boil and he shall recover,

39:1  At that time Merodach-baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent a letter and a present to Hezekiah; for he heard that he had been sick, and was recovered.

39:2  And Hezekiah was glad of them, and showed them his treasure-house, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious oil, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures; there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah showed them not.

2  And Ezekias was glad of their coming, and he shewed them the house of his spices, and of silver, and gold, and myrrh, and incense, and ointment, and all the houses of his treasures, and all that he had in his stores: and there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, which Ezekias did not shew.

2  And Hezekiah rejoiced over them, and he showed them the storehouses of his aromatic spices, and of the silver and gold, and of the perfumes and precious ointments, and all the repositories for his belongings, and all the things that were found in his treasures. There was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah did not show them.

39:3  Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him: 'What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee?' And Hezekiah said: 'They are come from a far country unto me, even from Babylon.'

3  And Esaias the prophet came to king Ezekias, and said to him, What say these men? and whence came they to thee? and Ezekias said, They are come to me from a land afar off, from Babylon.

3  Then Isaiah the prophet entered before king Hezekiah, and he said to him, “What did these men say, and from where did they come to you?” And Hezekiah said, “They came to me from a far away land, from Babylon.”

39:4  Then said he: 'What have they seen in thy house?' And Hezekiah answered: 'All that is in my house have they seen; there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shown them.'

4  And Esaias said, What have they seen in thine house? and Ezekias said, They have seen everything in my house; and there is nothing in my house which they have not seen: yea, also the possessions in my treasuries.

4  And he said, “What did they see in your house?” And Hezekiah said: “They have seen all the things that are in my house. There was nothing that I did not show them among my treasures.”

39:5  Then said Isaiah to Hezekiah: 'Hear the word of YHWH of hosts

5  And Esaias said to him, Hear the word of the Lord of hosts

39:6  Behold, the days come, that all that is in thy house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left, saith YHWH.

6  Behold, the days come, when they shall take all the things that are in thine house, and all that thy fathers have gathered until this day, shall go to Babylon; and they shall not leave anything at all: and God hath said,

6  Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house, and all that your fathers have stored up, even to this day, will be taken away to Babylon. There will be nothing left behind, says the Lord.

39:7  And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, whom thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be officers in the palace of the king of Babylon.'

7  that they shall take also of thy children whom thou shalt beget; and they shall make them eunuchs in the house of the king of the Babylonians.

7  And your children, who will issue from you, whom you will produce, they will be taken away. And they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.”

39:8  Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah: 'Good is the word of YHWH which thou hast spoken.' He said moreover: 'If but there shall be peace and truth in my days.'

40:1  Comfort ye, comfort ye My people, saith your God.

1  “Be consoled, be consoled, O my people!” says your God.

40:2  Bid Jerusalem take heart, and proclaim unto her, that her time of service is accomplished, that her guilt is paid off; that she hath received of YHWH'S hand double for all her sins.

40:3  Hark! one calleth: 'Clear ye in the wilderness the way of YHWH, make plain in the desert a highway for our God.

3  The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight the paths of our God.

40:4  Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the rugged shall be made level, and the rough places a plain;

4  Every valley will be exalted, and every mountain and hill will be brought low. And the crooked will be straightened, and the uneven will become level ways.

40:5  And the glory of YHWH shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the YHWH hath spoken it.'

40:6  Hark! one saith: 'Proclaim!' And he saith: 'What shall I proclaim?' 'All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field;

6  The voice of one saying, Cry; and I said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass

6  The voice says, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field;

40:7  The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; because the breath of YHWH bloweth upon it--surely the people is grass.

7  The grass has dried up, and the flower has fallen. For the Spirit of the Lord has blown over it. Truly, the people are like grass.

40:8  The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God shall stand for ever.'

8  The grass has dried up, and the flower has fallen. But the Word of our Lord remains for eternity.”

40:9  O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, get thee up into the high mountain; O thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah: 'Behold your God!'

9  You who evangelize Zion, climb a high mountain! You who evangelize Jerusalem, lift up your voice with strength! Lift it up! Do not be afraid! Say to the cities of Judah: “Behold, your God!”

9  O Zion, that brings good tidings, get you up upon the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that brings good tidings, lift up your voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say to the cities of Judah, Behold your God!

40:10  Behold, YHWH GOD will come as a Mighty One, and His arm will rule for Him; behold, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.

10  Behold the Lord! The Lord is coming with strength, and his arm is with power: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.

10  Behold, the Lord God will arrive in strength, and his arm will rule. Behold, his reward is with him, and his work is before him.

40:11  Even as a shepherd that feedeth his flock, that gathereth the lambs in his arm, and carrieth them in his bosom, and gently leadeth those that give suck.

11  He shall tend his flock as a shepherd, and he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and shall soothe them that are with young.

11  He will pasture his flock like a shepherd. He will gather together the lambs with his arm, and he will lift them up to his bosom, and he himself will carry the very young.

40:12  Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?

12  Who has measured the water in his hand, and the heaven with a span, and all the earth in a handful? Who has weighed the mountains in scales, and the forests in a balance?

12  Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and who has weighed the heavens with his palm? Who has suspended the mass of the earth with three fingers, and who has weighed the mountains on a balance and the hills on a scale?

40:13  Who hath meted out the spirit of YHWH? Or who was His counsellor that he might instruct Him?

13  Who has known the mind of the Lord? and who has been his counsellor, to instruct him?

13  Who has assisted the Spirit of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor and has revealed things to him?

40:14  With whom took He counsel, and who instructed Him, and taught Him in the path of right, and taught Him knowledge, and made Him to know the way of discernment?

14  Or with whom has he taken counsel, and he has instructed him? or who has taught him judgement, or who has taught him the way of understanding;

40:15  Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance; behold the isles are as a mote in weight.

15  since all the nations are counted as a drop from a bucket, and as the turning of a balance, and shall be counted as spittle?

40:16  And Lebanon is not sufficient fuel, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for burnt-offerings.

16  And Libanus is not enough to burn, nor all beasts enough for a whole-burnt offering

16  And Lebanon will not be sufficient to start a fire, and its animals will not be sufficient for a burnt offering.

40:17  All the nations are as nothing before Him; they are accounted by Him as things of nought, and vanity.

17  and all the nations are as nothing, and counted as nothing.

17  All the nations in his sight are as if they did not exist, and they are considered by him as if they were nothingness and emptiness.

40:18  To whom then will ye liken God? Or what likeness will ye compare unto Him?

18  To whom have ye compared the Lord? and with what likeness have ye compared him?

18  Therefore, to whom would you liken God? Or with what image would you replace him?

40:19  The image perchance, which the craftsman hath melted, and the goldsmith spread over with gold, the silversmith casting silver chains?

19  Should the workman cast a statue? Or has the goldsmith formed it with gold, or the silversmith with plates of silver?

40:20  A holm-oak is set apart, he chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh unto him a cunning craftsman to set up an image, that shall not be moved.

20  For the artificer chooses out a wood that will not rot, and will wisely enquire how he shall set up his image, and that so that it should not be moved.

20  He has chosen strong wood that will not decay. The skillful artisan seeks a way to set up an idol that cannot be moved.

40:21  Know ye not? hear ye not? Hath it not been told you from the beginning? Have ye not understood the foundations of the earth?

21  Will ye not know? will ye not hear? has it not been told you of old? Have ye not known the foundations of the earth?

21  Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been announced to you from the beginning? Have you not understood the foundations of the earth?

40:22  It is He that sitteth above the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in;

22  He is the One who sits upon the globe of the earth, and its inhabitants are like locusts. He extends the heavens as if they were nothing, and he spreads them out like a tent, in which to dwell.

22  It is he who sits upon the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens as a curtain and spreads them as a tent to dwell in;

40:23  That bringeth princes to nothing; He maketh the judges of the earth as a thing of nought.

23  he that appoints princes to rule as nothing, and has made the earth as nothing.

23  He has brought those who examine what is secret to nothingness. He has brought the judges of the earth to emptiness.

40:24  Scarce are they planted, scarce are they sown, scarce hath their stock taken root in the earth; when He bloweth upon them, they wither, and the whirlwind taketh them away as stubble.

24  For they shall not plant, neither shall they sow, neither shall their root be fixed in the ground: he has blown upon them, and they are withered, and a storm shall carry them away like sticks.

40:25  To whom then will ye liken Me, that I should be equal? saith the Holy One.

25  Now then to whom have ye compared me, that I may be exalted? saith the Holy One.

25  “And to whom would you compare me or equate me?” says the Holy One.

40:26  Lift up your eyes on high, and see: who hath created these? He that bringeth out their host by number, He calleth them all by name; by the greatness of His might, and for that He is strong in power, not one faileth.

40:27  Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel: 'My way is hid from YHWH, and my right is passed over from my God'?

27  For say not thou, O Jacob, and why hast thou spoken, Israel, saying, My way is hid from God, and my God has taken away my judgement, and has departed?

27  Why do you say this, O Jacob, and why do you speak this way, O Israel? “My way has been hidden from the Lord, and my judgment escaped notice by my God.”

40:28  Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard that the everlasting God, YHWH, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? His discernment is past searching out.

28  Do you not know, or have you not heard? The Lord is the eternal God, who has created the limits of the earth. He does not diminish, and he does not struggle. Neither is his wisdom searchable.

40:29  He giveth power to the faint; and to him that hath no might He increaseth strength.

29  It is he who gives strength to the weary, and it is he who increases fortitude and strength in those who are failing.

40:30  Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall;

30  For the young men shall hunger, and the youths shall be weary, and the choice men shall be powerless

30  Servants will struggle and fail, and young men will fall into infirmity.

40:31  But they that wait for YHWH shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.

31  But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will take up wings like eagles. They will run and not struggle. They will walk and not tire.

41:1  Keep silence before Me, O islands, and let the peoples renew their strength; let them draw near, then let them speak; let us come near together to judgment.

1  Hold a feast to me, ye islands: for the princes shall renew their strength: let them draw nigh and speak together: then let them declare judgement.

1  Let the islands be silent before me, and let the nations take new strength. Let them draw near, and then speak. Let us apply for judgment together.

41:2  Who hath raised up one from the east, at whose steps victory attendeth? He giveth nations before him, and maketh him rule over kings; his sword maketh them as the dust, his bow as the driven stubble.

2  Who raised up righteousness from the east, and called it to his feet, so that it should go? shall appoint it an adversary of Gentiles, and shall dismay kings, and bury their swords in the earth, and cast forth their bows and arrows as sticks?

2  Who has raised up a just man from the east, and has called him to follow him? He will place the nations under his gaze, and he will rule over kings. He will cause them to be like dust before his sword, like chaff driven by the wind before his bow.

41:3  He pursueth them, and passeth on safely; the way with his feet he treadeth not.

3  He will pursue them. He will pass by in peace. No trace will appear after his feet.

3  He shall pursue them, then make peace; and he shall not pass that way on foot.

41:4  Who hath wrought and done it? He that called the generations from the beginning. I, YHWH, who am the first, and with the last am the same.

4  Who has wrought and done these things? he has called it who called it from the generations of old; I God, the first and to all futurity, I AM.

41:5  The isles saw, and feared; the ends of the earth trembled; they drew near, and came.

5  The nations saw, and feared; the ends of the earth drew nigh, and came together,

5  The islands saw it and were afraid. The ends of the earth were stupefied. They drew near and arrived.

41:6  They helped every one his neighbour; and every one said to his brother: 'Be of good courage.'

6  every one judging for his neighbor and that to assist his brother: and one will say,

6  Each one will help his neighbor and will say to his brother, “Be strengthened.”

41:7  So the carpenter encouraged the goldsmith, and he that smootheth with the hammer him that smiteth the anvil, saying of the soldering: 'It is good'; and he fastened it with nails, that it should not be moved.

7  The artificer has become strong, and the coppersmith that smites with the hammer, and forges also: sometimes he will say, It is a piece well joined: they have fastened them with nails; they will fix them, and they shall not be moved.

7  The coppersmith striking with the mallet encouraged him who was forging at that time, saying, “It is ready for soldering.” And he strengthened it with nails, so that it would not be moved.

41:8  But thou, Israel, My servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham My friend;

8  But you, O Israel, are my servant, O Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of my friend Abraham.

8  But now, Israel, you are my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the descendants of Abraham my friend, whom I have strengthened.

41:9  Thou whom I have taken hold of from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the uttermost parts thereof, and said unto thee: 'Thou art My servant, I have chosen thee and not cast thee away';

9  For his sake, I have taken you from the ends of the earth, and I have called you from its distant places. And I said to you: “You are my servant. I have chosen you, and I have not cast you aside.”

9  I have called you from the ends of the earth and from among the prophets, and said to you, You are my servant; I have chosen you, and have not rejected you;

41:10  Fear thou not, for I am with thee, be not dismayed, for I am thy God; I strengthen thee, yea, I help thee; yea, I uphold thee with My victorious right hand.

10  Fear not; for I am with thee: wander not; for I am thy God, who have strengthened thee; and I have helped thee, and have established thee with my just right hand.

10  Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not turn away, for I am your God. I have strengthened you, and I have assisted you, and the right hand of my just one has upheld you.

41:11  Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded; they that strove with thee shall be as nothing, and shall perish.

11  Behold, all who fight against you shall be confounded and ashamed. They will be as if they did not exist, and the men who contradict you will perish.

11  All those that reproach you shall be ashamed and confounded; they shall be as nothing; and those who strive with you shall perish.

41:12  Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee; they that warred against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought.

12  You will seek them, and you will not find them. The men who rebel against you will be as if they did not exist. And the men who make war against you will be like something that has been consumed.

12  You shall seek them that strive with you, but you shall not find them; they that war against you shall be as if they were nothing.

41:13  For I YHWH thy God hold thy right hand, who say unto thee: 'Fear not, I help thee.'

13  For I am thy God, who holdeth thy right hand, who saith to thee,

13  For I am the Lord your God. I take you by your hand, and I say to you: Do not be afraid. I have helped you.

41:14  Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I help thee, saith YHWH, and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

14  Fear not, O you helpless men of Jacob, O you remnant of Israel! I am your helper, says the LORD, and your Saviour, the Holy One of Israel.

41:15  Behold, I make thee a new threshing-sledge having sharp teeth; thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff.

15  I have established you like a new threshing cart, having serrated blades. You will thresh the mountains and crush them. And you will turn the hills into chaff.

15  Behold, I have made you as a new threshing instrument having teeth; a thing which tears and crushes to pieces; you shall thresh the mountains and beat them small, and shall make the hills as chaff.

41:16  Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them; and thou shalt rejoice in YHWH, thou shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel.

16  You will winnow them, and the wind will blow them away, and the whirlwind will scatter them. And you shall exult in the Lord; you shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

41:17  The poor and needy seek water and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst; I YHWH will answer them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.

17  And the poor and the needy shall exult; for when they shall seek water, and there shall be none, and their tongue is parched with thirst, I the Lord God, I the God of Israel will hear, and will not forsake them

17  The indigent and the poor are seeking water, but there is none. Their tongue has been dried up by thirst. I, the Lord, will heed them. I, the God of Israel, will not abandon them.

41:18  I will open rivers on the high hills, and fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.

18  but I will open rivers on the mountains, and fountains in the midst of plains: I will make the desert pools of water, and a thirsty land watercourses.

41:19  I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia-tree, and the myrtle, and the oil-tree; I will set in the desert the cypress, the plane-tree, and the larch together;

19  I will plant in the dry land the cedar and box, the myrtle and cypress, and white poplar

19  I will plant the cedar in a deserted place, with the thorn, and the myrtle, and the olive tree. In the desert, I will plant the pine, and the elm, and the box tree together,

41:20  That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of YHWH hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

20  so that they may see and know, acknowledge and understand, together, that the hand of the Lord has accomplished this, and that the Holy One of Israel has created it.

41:21  Produce your cause, saith YHWH; bring forth your reasons, saith the King of Jacob.

21  Your judgement draws nigh, saith the Lord God; your counsel have drawn nigh, saith the King of Jacob.

21  Bring your case forward, says the Lord. Bring it here, if you have anything to allege, says the King of Jacob.

41:22  Let them bring them forth, and declare unto us the things that shall happen; the former things, what are they? Declare ye, that we may consider, and know the end of them; or announce to us things to come.

22  Let them draw nigh, and declare to you what things shall come to pass; or tell us what things were of old, and we will apply our understanding, and we shall know what are the last and the future things

22  Let them approach and announce to us the things that will occur. Announce to us the things that were before. And we will apply our heart to them, and we will know their end. And so, reveal to us the things that will occur.

41:23  Declare the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods; yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together.

23  tell us, declare ye to us the things that are coming on at the last time, and we shall know that ye are gods: do good, and do evil, and we shall wonder, and see at the same time

23  Announce the things that will occur in the future, and we will know that you are gods. Likewise, accomplish good or evil, if you are able, and let us speak of it and see it together.

41:24  Behold, ye are nothing, and your work a thing of nought; an abomination is he that chooseth you.

24  whence ye are, and whence is your works: they have chosen you an abomination out of the earth.

41:25  I have roused up one from the north, and he is come, from the rising of the sun one that calleth upon My name; and he shall come upon rulers as upon mortar, and as the potter treadeth clay.

25  But I have raised up him that comes from the north, and him that comes from the rising of the sun: they shall be called by my name: let the princes come, and as potter’s clay, and as a potter treading clay, so shall ye be trodden down.

41:26  Who hath declared from the beginning, that we may know? and beforetime, that we may say that he is right? Yea, there is none that declareth, yea, there is none that announceth, yea, there is none that heareth your utterances.

26  For who will declare the things from the beginning, that we may know also the former things, and we will say that they are true? there is no one that speaks beforehand, nor anyone that hears your words.

26  Who has announced this from its rising, so that we may know it, or from its beginning, so that we may say, “You are just.” There is no one who either announces, or predicts, or hears your words.

41:27  A harbinger unto Zion will I give: 'Behold, behold them', and to Jerusalem a messenger of good tidings.

27  I will give dominion to Sion, and will comfort Jerusalem by the way.

41:28  And I look, but there is no man; even among them, but there is no counsellor, that, when I ask of them, can give an answer.

28  For from among the nations, behold, there was no one; and of their idols there was none to declare anything: and if I should ask them, Whence are ye? they could not answer me.

28  For I beheld, and there was no man who could meditate about these things, that I might ask him, and that he might give me an answer.
