1  And Job again took up his parable, and said

1  Job also added to this, using figures of speech, and he said

1  MOREOVER Job continued his parable, and said,

2  As God liveth, who hath taken away my right; and the Almighty, who hath dealt bitterly with me;

2  As God lives, who has thus judged me; and the Almighty, who has embittered my soul;

3  All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils,

3  verily, while my breath is yet in me, and the breath of God which remains to me is in my nostrils,

3  as long as my breath remains in me and the breath of God remains in my nostrils,

4  Surely my lips shall not speak unrighteousness, neither shall my tongue utter deceit;

4  my lips shall not speak evil words, neither shall my soul meditate unrighteous thoughts.

4  my lips will not speak iniquity, nor will my tongue devise lies.

5  Far be it from me that I should justify you; till I die I will not put away mine integrity from me.

5  God forbid that I should do evil, till I die I will not remove my innocence from me.

6  My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go; my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

6  but keeping fast to my righteousness I will by no means let it go: for I am not conscious to myself of having done any thing amiss.

6  I will not forsake my justification, which I have just begun to grasp, for my heart does not find blame for me in my whole life.

7  Let mine enemy be as the wicked, and let him that riseth up against me be as the unrighteous.

7  Let the impious be as my enemy, and the sinful, as my adversary.

8  For what is the hope of the godless, though he get him gain, when God taketh away his soul?

8  For what hope is there for the hypocrite, if he greedily plunders and God does not free his soul?

8  For though he has accumulated riches, what is the hope of the godless at the time when God takes away his life?

9  Will God hear his cry, when trouble cometh upon him?

9  Will God pay attention to his cry, when anguish overcomes him?

9  For God will not hear his prayer when trouble comes upon him.

10  Will he have his delight in the Almighty, and call upon God at all times?

10  has he any confidence before him? or will God hear him as he calls upon him?

10  But if he should trust in the Almighty, and always call upon God, God will hear him and answer him.

11  I will teach you concerning the hand of God; that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.

11  Yet now I will tell you what is in the hand of the Lord: I will not lie concerning the things which are with the Almighty.

11  But as for you, I will deliver you into the hand of God; so that your works may not be hid from him.

12  Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; why then are ye become altogether vain?

12  Behold, ye all know that ye are adding vanity to vanity.

12  Behold, you know all this, and so why do you speak vain things without a reason?

13  This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty.

13  This is the portion of an ungodly man from the Lord, and the possession of oppressors shall come upon them from the Almighty.

14  If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not have bread enough.

14  And if their children be many, they shall be for slaughter: and if they grow up, they shall beg.

14  If his sons should happen to increase, they will be for the sword, and his grandsons will not be satisfied with bread.

15  Those that remain of him shall be buried by pestilence, and his widows shall make no lamentation.

15  And they that survive of him shall utterly perish, and no one shall pity their widows.

15  Whatever will remain of him will be buried in the ruins, and his widows will not weep.

16  Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay;

16  If he will amass silver as if it were dirt and fabricate garments as if they were clay,

17  He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.

17  All these things shall the righteous gain, and the truehearted shall possess his wealth.

17  then yes, he will gather, but the just will be clothed with it and the innocent will divide the silver.

18  He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth which the keeper maketh.

18  And his house is gone like moths, and like a spider’s web.

18  For the wicked has built his house upon a spider's web, and like a booth he had made his shelter.

19  He lieth down rich, but there shall be not to gather; he openeth his eyes, and his wealth is not.

19  The rich man shall lie down, and shall not continue: he has opened his eyes, and he is not.

19  When he falls asleep, the rich man will leave him with nothing; he will open his eyes and find nothing.

20  Terrors overtake him like waters; a tempest stealeth him away in the night.

20  Pains have come upon him as water, and darkness has carried him away by night.

20  Destitution will surround him like water; a storm will overwhelm him in the night.

21  The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth; and it sweepeth him out of his place.

21  And a burning wind shall catch him, and he shall depart, and it shall utterly drive him out of his place.

21  A burning wind will pick him up and carry him away, and, like a whirlwind, it will rush him from his place.

22  Yea, it hurleth at him, and spareth not; he would fain flee from its power.

22  And God shall cast trouble upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand.

22  And it will hurl over him and will not spare him; fleeing from its power, he will go into exile.

23  Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

23  He will clasp his hands over himself, and he will hiss at himself, while considering his situation.

23  He shall smite him with his hand, and shall hiss against him from his dwelling place.

28:1  For there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold which they refine.

1  Silver has its fissures where it is first found, and gold has a place where it is melted.

1  SURELY there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined.

28:2  Iron is taken out of the dust, and brass is molten out of the stone.

2  For iron comes out of the earth, and brass is hewn out like stone.

28:3  Man setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out to the furthest bound the stones of thick darkness and of the shadow of death.

3  He has established a time for darkness, and he has settled on an end for all things, as well as for the stone that is in the gloom and shadow of death.

3  God sets an end to darkness, and knows the end of everything, the deep and dark mine and the shadow of death.

28:4  He breaketh open a shaft away from where men sojourn; they are forgotten of the foot that passeth by; they hang afar from men, they swing to and fro.

4  There is a cutting off the torrent by reason of dust: so they that forget the right way are weakened; they are removed from among men.

4  They have inherited a ruined mine from an alien people; they are gone astray from the right path and their number has diminished from among men.

28:5  As for the earth, out of it cometh bread, and underneath it is turned up as it were by fire.

5  The land, where bread appeared in its place, has been destroyed by fire.

5  They lay open the earth, out of which comes sustenance; and from under it is turned up material as if it were burned with fire.

28:6  The stones thereof are the place of sapphires, and it hath dust of gold.

6  Her stones are the place of the sapphire: and her dust supplies man with gold.

6  Its stones are embedded with sapphires, and its soil, with gold.

28:7  That path no bird of prey knoweth, neither hath the falcon's eye seen it;

7  There is a path, the fowl has not known it, neither has the eye of the vulture seen it

7  The bird does not know its path, nor has the eye of the vulture beheld it.

28:8  The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor hath the lion passed thereby.

28:9  He putteth forth his hand upon the flinty rock; He overturneth the mountains by the roots.

9  He has stretched forth his hand on the sharp rock, and turned up mountains by the roots

9  The miner puts forth his hand upon the hard rock to break it; he overturns the mountains from their foundations.

28:10  He cutteth out channels among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.

10  and he has interrupted the whirlpools of rivers, and mine eye has seen every precious thing.

28:11  He bindeth the streams that they trickle not; and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light.

11  And he has laid bare the depths of rivers, and has brought his power to light.

11  The depths of rivers he has also examined, and he has brought hidden things into the light.

28:12  But wisdom, where shall it be found? And where is the place of understanding?

12  But whence has wisdom been discovered? and what is the place of knowledge?

12  But, in truth, where is wisdom to be found, and where is the place of understanding?

28:13  Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.

13  A mortal has not known its way, neither indeed has it been discovered among men.

13  Man does not know its price, nor is it found in the land of those who live in sweetness.

28:14  The deep saith: 'It is not in me'; and the sea saith: 'It is not with me.'

14  The abyss declares, “It is not in me.” And the sea says, “It is not with me.”

14  The depth says, It is not in me, and the sea says, It is not with me.

28:15  It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.

15  One shall not give fine gold instead of it, neither shall silver be weighed in exchange for it.

15  The finest gold will not be paid for it, nor will silver be weighed in exchange for it.

28:16  It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.

16  Neither shall it be compared with gold of Sophir, with the precious onyx and sapphire.

16  It will not be compared with the dyed colors of India, nor with the very costly stone sardonyx, nor with the sapphire.

28:17  Gold and glass cannot equal it; neither shall the exchange thereof be vessels of fine gold.

17  Neither gold nor crystal will be its equal; neither will vessels of gold be fitted for it.

17  The gold and the crystal cannot equal it; nor can precious pearls, jewels, and emeralds equal it.

28:18  No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; yea, the price of wisdom is above rubies.

18  The exalted and the eminent will not be remembered in comparison with it. Yet wisdom is drawn out of concealment.

28:19  The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

19  For the price of wisdom is above everything, and nothing can equal it. The pearls of Ethiopia and the topaz cannot equal it.

28:20  Whence then cometh wisdom? And where is the place of understanding?

20  So then, where does wisdom begin, and where is the place of understanding?

28:21  Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.

21  It has escaped the notice of every man, and has been hidden from the birds of the sky.

21  It has been hidden from the eyes of all living things, just as the birds of the heavens escape notice.

28:22  Destruction and Death say: 'We have heard a rumor thereof with our ears.'

22  Perdition and death have said, “With our ears, we have heard its fame.”

28:23  God understandeth the way thereof, and He knoweth the place thereof.

23  God has well ordered the way of it, and he knows the place of it.

23  Because only God understands the way of it, and he knows the place thereof.

28:24  For He looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;

24  For he surveys the whole earth under heaven, knowing the things in the earth

24  For he beholds the limits of the world, and he looks upon all things that are under heaven.

28:25  When He maketh a weight for the wind, and meteth out the waters by measure.

28:26  When He made a decree for the rain, and a way for the storm of thunders;

26  At that time, he gave a law to the rain and a path to the resounding storms.

28:27  Then did He see it, and declare it; He established it, yea, and searched it out.

27  Then he saw it, and declared it: he prepared it and traced it out.

27  Then he saw and explained it, and he made ready and examined it.

28:28  And unto man He said: 'Behold, the fear of YHWH, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.'

28  And he said to man, Behold, godliness is wisdom: and to abstain from evil is understanding.

29:1  And Job again took up his parable, and said

29:2  Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me;

2  Who will grant to me that I might be as I was in former months, according to the days when God kept watch over me?

2  O that I were as in months past, as in the days when God took care of me;

29:3  When His lamp shined above my head, and by His light I walked through darkness;

3  At that time, his lamp shined over my head, and by his light, I walked through the darkness.

3  When he put his worship high upon my head, when his lamp shone over me; and when by his light I walked through darkness.

29:4  As I was in the days of my youth, when the converse of God was upon my tent;

4  As when I steadfastly pursued my ways, when God took care of my house.

4  O, that I were as in the days when I was in favor, when God abode in my tabernacle;

29:5  When the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were about me;

5  When I was very fruitful, and my children were about me;

5  At that time, the Almighty was with me and my children surrounded me.

29:6  When my steps were washed with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil!

6  when my ways were moistened with butter, and the mountains flowed for me with milk.

6  Then, I washed my feet with butter, and a boulder poured out rivers of oil for me.

29:7  When I went forth to the gate unto the city, when I prepared my seat in the broad place,

7  When I went out to the gate of the city and called on the people; and sat down like a poor man in the street,

29:8  The young men saw me and hid themselves, and the aged rose up and stood;

8  The youths saw me and hid themselves, and the elders, rising up, remained standing.

29:9  The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth;

9  And the great men ceased speaking, and laid their finger on their mouth.

9  The leaders stopped talking, and they placed a finder over their mouth.

29:10  The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.

10  And they that heard me blessed me, and their tongue clave to their throat.

10  The commanders subdued their voice, and their tongue adhered to their throat.

29:11  For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me, and when the eye saw me, it gave witness unto me;

11  For the ear heard, and blessed me; and the eye saw me, and turned aside.

11  The ear that heard me, blessed me, and the eye that saw me, gave testimony for me.

29:12  Because I delivered the poor that cried, the fatherless also, that had none to help him.

12  For I saved the poor out of the hand of the oppressor, and helped the fatherless who had no helper.

12  This was because I had freed the poor, who cried out, and the orphan, who had no helper.

29:13  The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

13  Let the blessing of the perishing one come upon me; yea, the mouth of the widow has blessed me.

29:14  I put on righteousness, and it clothed itself with me; my justice was as a robe and a diadem.

14  Also I put on righteousness, and clothed myself with judgement like a mantle.

14  I put on justice, and I clothed myself with my judgment, like a robe and a diadem.

29:15  I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.

15  I was an eye for the blind and a foot for the lame.

29:16  I was a father to the needy; and the cause of him that I knew not I searched out.

16  I was the father of the helpless; and I searched out the cause which I knew not.

16  I was the father of the poor; and if I lacked knowledge about any case, I investigated very diligently.

29:17  And I broke the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the prey out of his teeth.

17  I crushed the jaws of the impious, and I took away prey from his teeth.

29:18  Then I said: 'I shall die with my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the phoenix;

18  And I said, My age shall continue as the stem of a palm-tree; I shall live a long while.

18  Then I said, I shall become straight like a reed, I shall deliver the poor and multiply my days like the sand of the seas.

29:19  My root shall be spread out to the waters, and the dew shall lie all night upon my branch;

19  My roots are planted by the waters, and the dew lies all night upon my boughs, and at the harvest season I shall be invited to the feast.

29:20  My glory shall be fresh in me, and my bow shall be renewed in my hand.'

20  I shall take my bow with me, and renew it in my hand.

29:21  Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel.

21  Those who heard me, expected vindication, and they listened closely in silence to my counsel.

29:22  After my words they spoke not again; and my speech dropped upon them.

22  At my word they spoke not again, and they were very glad whenever I spoke to them.

22  To my words, they dared to add nothing, and my eloquence poured over them.

29:23  And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.

23  As the thirsty earth expecting the rain, so they waited for my speech.

23  They waited for me as for rain, and they opened their mouth as for belated rains.

29:24  If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.

24  Were I to laugh on them, they would not believe it; and the light of my face has not failed.

24  If I had ever laughed at them, they would not have believed it, and the light of my face was not cast down towards the ground.

29:25  I chose out their way, and sat as chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.

25  If I wished to go to them, I sat down first, and, though I sat like a king surrounded by an army, yet I was a comforter to whose who mourned.

25  I searched out their ways, and then returned and dwelt as a king in his army, like one who comforts the mourners.

30:1  But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I disdained to set with the dogs of my flock.

1  But now the youngest have laughed me to scorn, now they reprove me in their turn, whose fathers I set at nought; whom I did not deem worthy to be with my shepherd dogs.

1  BUT now they laugh at me, those who are less than I,

30:2  Yea, the strength of their hands, whereto should it profit me? men in whom ripe age is perished.

2  the strength of whose hands was nothing to me, and they were considered unworthy of life itself.

30:3  They are gaunt with want and famine; they gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of wasteness and desolation.

3  One is childless in want and famine, such as they that fled but lately the distress and misery of drought.

3  Yea, the strength of their hands, of what use would it have been to me?

30:4  They pluck salt-wort with wormwood; and the roots of the broom are their food.

4  Who compass the salt places on the sounding shore, who had salt herbs for their food, and were dishonorable and of no repute, in want of every good thing; who also ate roots of trees by reason of great hunger.

4  For they had lost their power completely.

30:5  They are driven forth from the midst of men; they cry after them as after a thief.

5  Thieves have risen up against me,

5  They were forced by bare necessities, like a thief swept off his feet,

30:6  In the clefts of the valleys must they dwell, in holes of the earth and of the rocks.

6  whose houses were the caves of the rocks, who lived under the wild shrubs.

6  They lived in the parched desert and in caves underground or above the rocks.

30:7  Among the bushes they bray; under the nettles they are gathered together.

7  They will cry out among the rustling bushes.

30:8  They are children of churls, yea, children of ignoble men; they were scourged out of the land.

8  These are the sons of foolish and base men, not even paying any attention to the land.

8  The children of fools shall be overthrown together with the children of the wicked; they shall be brought lower than the earth.

30:9  And now I am become their song, yea, I am a byword unto them.

9  But now I am their music, and they have me for a by-word.

9  Now I become their song, and I have been made into their proverb.

30:10  They abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.

10  And they stood aloof and abhorred me, and spared not to spit in my face.

10  They loathe me, and so they flee far from me, and they are not reluctant to spit in my face.

30:11  For He hath loosed my cord, and afflicted me, and they have cast off the bridle before me.

11  For he has opened his quiver and afflicted me: they also have cast off the restraint of my presence.

11  Because they began to deride me and humiliate me, they have also put their bridle in my mouth.

30:12  Upon my right hand rise the brood; they entangle my feet, and they cast up against me their ways of destruction.

12  They have risen up against me on the right hand of their offspring; they have stretched out their foot, and directed against me the ways of their destruction.

12  Immediately, upon rising, my calamities rise up to the right. They have overturned my feet and have pressed me down along their way like waves.

30:13  They break up my path, they further my calamity, even men that have no helper.

13  My paths are ruined; for they have stripped off my raiment: he has shot at me with his weapons.

13  They have diverted my journeys; they have waited to ambush me, and they have prevailed, and there was no one who might bring help.

30:14  As through a wide breach they come; in the midst of the ruin they roll themselves upon me.

14  And he has pleaded against me as he will: I am overwhelmed with pains.

14  They shall suffer a great ruin; they shall be broken by the hurricane.

30:15  Terrors are turned upon me, they chase mine honour as the wind; and my welfare is passed away as a cloud.

15  My pains return upon me; my hope is gone like the wind, and my safety as a cloud.

15  I have been reduced to nothing. You have taken away my desire like a wind, and my health has passed by like a cloud.

30:16  And now my soul is poured out within me; days of affliction have taken hold upon me.

16  Even now my life shall be poured forth upon me; and days of anguish seize me.

16  But now my soul withers within myself, and the days of affliction take hold of me.

30:17  In the night my bones are pierced, and fall from me, and my sinews take no rest.

17  And by night my bones are confounded; and my sinews are relaxed.

17  At night, my bone is pierced with sorrows, and those who feed on me, do not sleep.

30:18  By the great force of my disease is my garment disfigured; it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.

18  I have put on my garment; and girded up myself with my robe.

30:19  He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.

19  And thou hast counted me as clay; my portion in dust and ashes.

19  I have been treated like dirt, and I have been turned into embers and ashes.

30:20  I cry unto Thee, and Thou dost not answer me; I stand up, and Thou lookest at me.

20  And I have cried to thee, but thou hearest me not: but they stood still, and observed me.

20  I cry to you, and you do not heed me. I stand up, and you do not look back at me.

30:21  Thou art turned to be cruel to me; with the might of Thy hand Thou hatest me.

21  They attacked me also without mercy: thou hast scourged me with a strong hand.

21  You have changed me into hardness, and, with the hardness of your hand, you oppose me.

30:22  Thou liftest me up to the wind, Thou causest me to ride upon it; and Thou dissolvest my substance.

22  And thou hast put me to grief, and hast cast me away from safety.

22  You have lifted me up, and, placing me as if on the wind, you have thrown me down powerfully.

30:23  For I know that Thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.

23  I know that you will hand me over to death, where a home has been established for all the living.

23  And yet I know that thou wilt bring me back from death to the meeting place for all living.

30:24  Surely none shall put forth his hand to a ruinous heap, neither because of these things shall help come in one's calamity,

24  Truly, then, you do not extend your hand in order to consume them, and if they fall down, you will save them.

24  But he will not stretch out his hand against me, and when I cry to him he will save me.

30:25  If I have not wept for him that was in trouble, and if my soul grieved not for the needy.

25  Yet I wept over every helpless man; I groaned when I saw a man in distress.

25  Once, I wept over him who was afflicted, and my soul had compassion on the poor.

30:26  Yet, when I looked for good, there came evil; and when I waited for light, there came darkness.

26  But I, when I waited for good things, behold, days of evils came the more upon me.

26  I expected good things, but evil things have come to me. I stood ready for light, yet darkness burst forth.

30:27  Mine inwards boil, and rest not; days of affliction are come upon me.

27  My belly boiled, and would not cease: the days of poverty prevented me.

27  My insides have seethed, without any rest, for the days of affliction have prevented it.

30:28  I go mourning without the sun; I stand up in the assembly, and cry for help.

28  I went mourning without restraint: and I have stood and cried out in the assembly.

28  I went forth mourning, without anger, and rising up, I cried out in confusion.

30:29  I am become a brother to jackals, and a companion to ostriches.

29  I was the brother of snakes, and the companion of ostriches.

30:30  My skin is black, and falleth from me, and my bones are burned with heat.

30  And my skin has been greatly blackened, and my bones are burned with heat.

30  My skin has become blackened over me, and my bones have dried up because of the heat.

30:31  Therefore is my harp turned to mourning, and my pipe into the voice of them that weep.

31  My harp also has been turned into mourning, and my song into my weeping.

31:1  I made a covenant with mine eyes; how then should I look upon a maid?

1  I reached an agreement with my eyes, that I would not so much as think about a virgin.

1  I MADE a vow with my eyes that I would never lust after a virgin.

31:2  For what would be the portion of God from above, and the heritage of the Almighty from on high?

2  Now what portion has God given from above? and is there an inheritance given of the Mighty One from the highest?

2  For what portion should God from above hold for me, and what inheritance should the Almighty from on high keep?

31:3  Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

3  Is not destruction held for the wicked and repudiation kept for those who work injustice?

31:4  Doth not He see my ways, and count all my steps?

4  Will he not see my way, and number all my steps?

4  He sees my ways, and counts all my steps.

31:5  If I have walked with vanity, and my foot hath hasted to deceit--

5  But if I had gone with scorners, and if too my foot has hasted to deceit

31:6  Let me be weighed in a just balance, that God may know mine integrity--

6  (for I am weighed in a just balance, and the Lord knows my innocence:)

6  let him weigh me in a just balance, and let God know my simplicity.

31:7  If my step hath turned out of the way, and my heart walked after mine eyes, and if any spot hath cleaved to my hands;

7  If my steps have turned aside from the way, or if my heart has followed my eyes, or if a blemish has clung to my hands,

31:8  Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

8  then may I sow, and let another consume, and let my offspring be eradicated.

8  But when I sowed, then I ate, and when I planted, then I cultivated and gathered the crops.

31:9  If my heart have been enticed unto a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbour's door;

9  If my heart has gone forth after another man’s wife, and if I laid wait at her doors;

9  And if my heart has been enticed by a strange woman, or if I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door;

31:10  Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

31:11  For that were a heinous crime; yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

11  For the rage of anger is not to be controlled, in the case of defiling another man’s wife.

11  For this is a crime and a very great injustice.

31:12  For it is a fire that consumeth unto destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

12  It is a fire devouring all the way to perdition, and it roots out all that springs forth.

31:13  If I did despise the cause of my man-servant, or of my maid-servant, when they contended with me--

13  If I have despised being subject to judgment with my servant or my maid, when they had any complaint against me,

31:14  What then shall I do when God riseth up? And when He remembereth, what shall I answer Him?

14  then what will I do when God rises to judge, and, when he inquires, how will I respond to him?

14  Without saying, What then shall I do when God rises up in judgment, and when he inquires, what shall I answer him?

31:15  Did not He that made me in the womb make him? And did not One fashion us in the womb?

15  Were not they too formed as I also was formed in the womb? yea, we were formed in the same womb.

31:16  If I have withheld aught that the poor desired, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

16  But the helpless missed not whatever need they had, and I did not cause the eye of the widow to fail.

16  If I have denied the poor what they wanted and have made the eyes of the widow wait;

31:17  Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof--

17  And if too I ate my morsel alone, and did not impart of it to the orphan;

17  if I have eaten my morsel of food alone, while orphans have not eaten from it;

31:18  Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have been her guide from my mother's womb.

18  (for I nourished them as a father from my youth and guided them from my mother’s womb.)

18  (Because from my youth I was brought up in sorrows, and from my mother's womb with sighing);

31:19  If I have seen any wanderer in want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;

19  And if too I overlooked the naked as he was perishing, and did not clothe him;

19  if I have looked down on him who was perishing because he had no clothing and the poor without any covering,

31:20  If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

20  and if the poor did not bless me, and their shoulders were not warmed with the fleece of my lambs;

20  (But they were reared upon my knees, and were warmed with the fleece of my sheep);

31:21  If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate;

21  if I lifted my hand against an orphan, trusting that my strength was far superior to his

21  if I have lifted up my hand over an orphan, even when it might seem to me that I the advantage over him at the gate;

31:22  Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

22  then may my shoulder fall from its joint, and may my arm, with all its bones, be broken.

31:23  For calamity from God was a terror to me, and by reason of His majesty I could do nothing.

23  For the fear of the Lord constrained me, and I cannot bear up by reason of his burden.

23  For I have always feared God, like waves flowing over me, whose weight I was unable to bear.

31:24  If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold: 'Thou art my confidence';

24  If I made gold my treasure, and if too I trusted the precious stone;

31:25  If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

25  and if too I rejoiced when my wealth was abundant, and if too I laid my hand on innumerable treasures

25  if I have rejoiced over my great success, and over the many things my hand has obtained;

31:26  If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

26  (do we not see the shining sun eclipsed, and the moon waning? for they have not power to continue:)

26  if I gazed upon the sun when it shined and the moon advancing brightly,

31:27  And my heart hath been secretly enticed, and my mouth hath kissed my hand;

27  and if my heart was secretly deceived, and if I have laid my hand upon my mouth and kissed it

27  so that my heart rejoiced in secret and I kissed my hand with my mouth,

31:28  This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; for I should have lied to God that is above.

28  which is a very great iniquity and a denial against the most high God;

28  Then God has seen my crafty ways, and I have lied before him.

31:29  If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or exulted when evil found him--

29  And if too I was glad at the fall of mine enemies, and mine heart said, Aha!

31:30  Yea, I suffered not my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse.

30  let then mine ear hear my curse, and let me be a byword among my people in my affliction.

30  (But I have neither suffered my mouth to sin, nor has my soul wished for any of these things;

31:31  If the men of my tent said not: 'Who can find one that hath not been satisfied with his meat?'

31  And if too my handmaids have often said, Oh that we might be satisfied with his flesh; (whereas I was very kind

31  My friends said, Oh this man would give us even of his own flesh! but we are not satisfied,

31:32  The stranger did not lodge in the street; my doors I opened to the roadside.

32  for the stranger did not lodge without, and my door was opened to every one that came:)

32  And the stranger I did not let lodge in the street, and I opened my door to the guest);

31:33  If after the manner of men I covered my transgressions, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom--

33  or if too having sinned unintentionally, I hid my sin;

33  If I have covered up my sins like some men, or if I have hid my guilt in secret places;

31:34  Because I feared the great multitude, and the most contemptible among families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and went not out of the door.

34  (for I did not stand in awe of a great multitude, so as not to declare boldly before them:) and if too I permitted a poor man to go out of my door with an empty bosom

31:35  Oh that I had one to hear me!--Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me--and that I had the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

35  then, would he grant me a hearing, so that the Almighty would listen to my desire, and he who judges would himself write a book,

31:36  Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown.

36  I would place it as a chaplet on my shoulders, and read it.

36  which I would then carry on my shoulder and wrap around me like a crown?

31:37  I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

37  And if I did not read it and return it, having taken nothing from the debtor

37  With each of my steps, I would pronounce and offer it, as if to a prince.

31:38  If my land cry out against me, and the furrows thereof weep together;

38  So, if my land cries out against me, and if its furrows weep with it,

38  Let the earth lament over me, let its furrows weep together,

31:39  If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the tillers thereof to be disappointed--

39  and if I ate its strength alone without price, and if I too grieved the heart of the owner of the soil, by taking aught from him

39  if I have used its fruits for nothing but money and have afflicted the souls of its tillers,

31:40  Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and noisome weeds instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

40  then let the nettle come up to me instead of wheat, and a bramble instead of barley. And Job ceased speaking.

40  then, may thistles spring forth for me instead of grain, and thorns instead of barley. (This ended the words of Job.)

32:1  So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

1  And his three friends also ceased any longer to answer Job: for Job was righteous before them.

32:2  Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram; against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.

2  Then Elius the son of Barachiel, the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram, of the country of Ausis, was angered: and he was very angry with Job, because he justified himself before the Lord.

2  And Eliu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram, was angry and indignant. But he was angry against Job because he described himself to be just in the presence of God.

32:3  Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

3  And he was also very angry with his three friends, because they were not able to return answers to Job, yet set him down for an ungodly man.

3  Moreover, he was indignant with his friends because they had not found a reasonable response, except in so far as they condemned Job.

32:4  Now Elihu had waited to speak unto Job, because they were older than he.

4  But Elius had forborne to give an answer to Job, because they were older than he.

4  Therefore, Eliu waited while Job was talking, for these were his elders that were speaking.

32:5  And when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, his wrath was kindled.

5  But when he saw that these three were not able to respond, he was extremely angry.

5  When Elihu saw that these three were unable to answer Job, then he was incensed.

32:6  And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said: I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I held back, and durst not declare you mine opinion.

6  And Elius the Buzite the son of Barachiel answered and said, I am younger in age, and ye are elder, wherefore I kept silence, fearing to declare to you my own knowledge.

6  And so Eliu the son of Barachel the Buzite responded by saying: I am younger in years, and you are more ancient; therefore, I kept my head low, for I was afraid to reveal to you my opinion.

32:7  I said: 'Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.'

7  And I said, It is not time that speaks, though in many years men know wisdom

7  For I had hoped that greater age would speak, and that a multitude of years would teach wisdom.

32:8  But it is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty, that giveth them understanding.

8  but there is a spirit in mortals; and the inspiration of the Almighty is that which teaches.

8  But I see now that there is only breath in men, and that it is the inspiration of the Almighty that gives understanding.

32:9  It is not the great that are wise, nor the aged that discern judgment.

9  The long-lived are not wise as such; neither do the aged know judgement.

32:10  Therefore I say: 'Hearken to me; I also will declare mine opinion.'

10  Wherefore I said, Hear me, and I will tell you what I know.

10  Therefore, I will speak. Listen to me, and so I will show you my wisdom.

32:11  Behold, I waited for your words, I listened for your reasons, whilst ye searched out what to say.

11  Hearken to my words; for I will speak in your hearing, until ye shall have tried the matter with words

11  For I have endured your words; I have paid attention to your deliberations, while you were being argumentative with words.

32:12  Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none that convinced Job, or that answered his words, among you.

12  and I shall understand as far as you; and, behold, there was no one of you that answered Job his words in argument,

12  And as long as I supposed that you were saying something, I considered; but now I see that there is none of you that is able to argue with Job and to respond to his words.

32:13  Beware lest ye say: 'We have found wisdom; God may vanquish him, not man!'

13  lest ye should say, We have found that we have added wisdom to the Lord.

13  So that you will not say, “We have found wisdom,” God has thrown him down, not man.

32:14  For he hath not directed his words against me; neither will I answer him with your speeches.

14  And ye have commissioned a man to speak such words.

14  He has said nothing to me, and I will not respond to him according to your words.

32:15  They are amazed, they answer no more; words are departed from them.

15  They were afraid, they answered no longer; they gave up their speaking.

15  Then they were filled with dread, and so they no longer responded, and they withdrew from their speechmaking.

32:16  And shall I wait, because they speak not, because they stand still, and answer no more?

16  They did not speak; they stood still, and answered him no more.

32:17  I also will answer my part, I also will declare mine opinion.

17  And Elius continued, and said, I will again speak,

17  I will answer also on my part; I also will show my knowledge.

32:18  For I am full of words; the spirit within me constraineth me.

32:19  Behold, mine inwards are as wine which hath no vent; like new wine-skins which are ready to burst.

19  And my belly is as a skin of sweet wine, bound up and ready to burst; or as a brazier’s labouring bellows.

32:20  I will speak, that I may find relief; I will open my lips and answer.

20  I should speak, but I will also breathe a little; I will open my lips, and I will answer.

32:21  Let me not, I pray you, respect any man's person; neither will I give flattering titles unto any man.

21  For truly I will not be awed because of man, nor indeed will I be confounded before a mortal.

21  I will not esteem the reputation of a man, and I will not equate God with man.

32:22  For I know not to give flattering titles; else would my Maker soon take me away.

22  For I do not know how long I will continue, and whether, after a while, my Maker might take me away.

33:1  Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear my speech, and hearken to all my words.

1  Howbeit hear, Job, my words, and hearken to my speech.

1  Therefore, hear my speeches, Job, and listen to all my words.

33:2  Behold now, I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.

2  For behold, I have opened my mouth, and my tongue has spoken.

33:3  My words shall utter the uprightness of my heart; and that which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.

3  My words are from my simple heart, and my lips will speak a pure judgment.

3  The words of my mouth are upright, and the utterances of my lips are pure.

33:4  The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty given me life.

4  The Divine Spirit is that which formed me, and the breath of the Almighty that which teaches me.

33:5  If thou canst, answer thou me, set thy words in order before me, stand forth.

5  If thou canst, give me an answer: wait therefore; stand against me, and I will stand against thee.

5  If you can, answer me, and oppose me to my face.

33:6  Behold, I am toward God even as thou art; I also am formed out of the clay.

6  Thou art formed out of the clay as also I: we have been formed out of the same substance.

6  Behold, God has made me, just as he also has made you, and I, likewise, have been formed of the same clay.

33:7  Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my pressure be heavy upon thee.

7  So, truly, do not let my wonders terrify you, and do not let my eloquence be burdensome to you.

7  Therefore my admonishings will not make you to tremble, neither will my rebuke be heavy upon you.

33:8  Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words;

8  But thou hast said in mine ears, (I have heard the voice of thy words;) because thou sayest, I am pure, not having sinned;

8  For you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of your words, saying

33:9  'I am clean, without transgression, I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me;

9  I am blameless, for I have not transgressed.

9  I am blameless without transgressions, I am righteous; and there is no iniquity in me, and I am far removed from wickedness.

33:10  Behold, He findeth occasions against me, He counteth me for His enemy;

10  Yet he has discovered a charge against me, and he has reckoned me as an adversary.

33:11  He putteth my feet in the stocks, He marketh all my paths.'

11  And he has put my foot in the stocks, and has watched all my ways.

11  He has put my feet in fetters; he has kept watch over all my ways.”

33:12  Behold, I answer thee: In this thou art not right, that God is too great for man;

12  For how sayest thou, I am righteous, yet he has not hearkened to me? for he that is above mortals is eternal.

33:13  Why hast thou striven against Him? seeing that He will not answer any of his words.

13  But thou sayest, Why has he not heard every word of my cause?

13  Do you contend against him because he has not responded to all of your words?

33:14  For God speaketh in one way, yea in two, though man perceiveth it not.

14  For when the Lord speaks once, or a second time,

14  God speaks once, and he does not repeat the same thing a second time.

33:15  In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;

15  sending a dream, or in the meditation of the night; (as when a dreadful alarm happens to fall upon men, in slumberings on the bed:)

15  Through a dream in a vision of the night, when a deep sleep falls over men, and they are sleeping in their beds,

33:16  Then He openeth the ears of men, and by their chastisement sealeth the decree,

16  then opens he the understanding of men: he scares them with such fearful visions

16  then, he opens the ears of men, and, educating them, he teaches discipline,

33:17  That men may put away their purpose, and that He may hide pride from man;

17  to turn a man from unrighteousness, and he delivers his body from a fall.

17  so that he may divert a man from the things that he is doing, and may free him from pride,

33:18  That He may keep back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.

18  He spares also his soul from death, and suffers him not to fall in war.

18  rescuing his soul from corruption and his life from passing away by the sword.

33:19  He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and all his bones grow stiff;

19  And again, he chastens him with sickness on his bed, and the multitude of his bones is benumbed.

19  Likewise, he rebukes by sorrow in bed, and he causes all of his bones to become weak.

33:20  So that his life maketh him to abhor bread, and his soul dainty food.

20  And he shall not be able to take any food, though his soul shall desire meat;

20  Bread becomes abominable to him in his life, and, to his soul, the meat which before he desired.

33:21  His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones corrode to unsightliness.

21  until his flesh shall be consumed, and he shall shew his bones bare.

21  His body will waste away, and his bones, which had been covered, will be revealed.

33:22  Yea, his soul draweth near unto the pit, and his life to the destroyers.

22  His soul also draws nigh to death, and his life is in Hades.

22  His soul has approached corruption, and his life has drawn near to what is deadly.

33:23  If there be for him an angel, an intercessor, one among a thousand, to vouch for a man's uprightness;

23  Though there should be a thousand messengers of death, not one of them shall wound him: if he should purpose in his heart to turn to the Lord, and declare to man his fault, and shew his folly;

23  If a man have an angel to whom one would listen once in a thousand times, the angel would show him the way of uprightness

33:24  Then He is gracious unto him, and saith: 'Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.'

24  he will support him, that he should not perish, and will restore his body as fresh plaster upon a wall; and he will fill his bones with morrow.

24  he will have mercy on him, and he will say, “Free him, so that he will not descend to destruction. I have found a reason to be favorable to him.

33:25  His flesh is tenderer than a child's; he returneth to the days of his youth;

25  And he will make his flesh tender as that of a babe, and he will restore him among men in his full strength.

33:26  He prayeth unto God, and He is favourable unto him; so that he seeth His face with joy; and He restoreth unto man his righteousness.

26  And he shall pray to the Lord, and his prayer shall be accepted of him; he shall enter with a cheerful countenance, with a full expression of praise: for he will render to men their due.

26  He will beg pardon from God, and he will be soothing to him; and he will look upon his face in jubilation, and he will restore his justice to man.

33:27  He cometh before men, and saith: 'I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not.'

27  Even then a man shall blame himself, saying, What kind of things have I done? and he has not punished me according to the full amount of my sins.

27  He will consider mankind, and he will say: “I have sinned and truly I have offended, yet I was not treated as I deserved.”

33:28  So He redeemeth his soul from going into the pit, and his life beholdeth the light.

28  Deliver my soul, that it may not go to destruction, and my life shall see the light.

28  He has freed his soul from continuing into destruction, so that, in living, it may see the light.

33:29  Lo, all these things doth God work, twice, yea thrice, with a man,

29  Behold, all these things, the Mighty One works in a threefold manner with a man.

33:30  To bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of the living.

30  And he has delivered my soul from death, that my life may praise him in the light.

30  so that he may revive their souls from corruption and enlighten them with the light of life.

33:31  Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me; hold thy peace, and I will speak.

31  Hearken, Job, and hear me: be silent, and I will speak.

31  Pay attention Job, and listen to me; and remain silent, while I speak.

33:32  If thou hast any thing to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify thee.

32  Yet, if you have anything to say, answer me and speak, for I want you to be treated justly.

32  If you have anything to say, answer me; for I desire that you may be justified.

33:33  If not, hearken thou unto me; hold thy peace, and I will teach thee wisdom.

33  But if you do not have anything to say, then listen to me. Be quiet and I will teach you wisdom.

33  But if you will not listen, then be silent, and I shall teach you wisdom.

34:1  Moreover Elihu answered and said

1  And Elius continued, and said,

1  After proclaiming these things, Eliu now had this to say

34:2  Hear my words, ye wise men; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.

2  Hear me, ye wise men; hearken, ye that have knowledge.

2  May the wise hear my words, and may the educated listen to me.

34:3  For the ear trieth words, as the palate tasteth food.

3  For the ear examines words, and the mouth discerns foods by the taste.

34:4  Let us choose for us that which is right; let us know among ourselves what is good.

4  Let us choose judgement to ourselves: let us know amount ourselves what is right.

34:5  For Job hath said: 'I am righteous, and God hath taken away my right;

5  For Job has said, I am righteous: the Lord has removed my judgement.

34:6  Notwithstanding my right I am accounted a liar; my wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.'

6  And he has erred in my judgement: my wound is severe without unrighteousness of mine.

6  Who is the man who has perished without transgression?

34:7  What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water?

7  What man is there that is like Job, who drinks up derision as if it were water,

34:8  Who goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men.

8  saying, I have not sinned, nor committed ungodliness, nor had fellowship with workers of iniquity, to go with the ungodly.

34:9  For he hath said: 'It profiteth a man nothing that he should be in accord with God.'

9  For thou shouldest not say, There shall be no visitation of a man, whereas there is a visitation on him from the Lord.

9  For he has said, “Man will not please God, even if he should travel with him.”

34:10  Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: Far be it from God, that He should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that He should commit iniquity.

10  Wherefore hear me, ye that are wise in heart: far be it from me to sin before the Lord, and to pervert righteousness before the almighty.

10  Therefore, prudent men, hear me: impiety is far from God, and iniquity is far from the Almighty.

34:11  For the work of a man will He requite unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.

11  Yea, he renders to a man accordingly as each of them does, and in a man’s path he will find him.

34:12  Yea, of a surety, God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert justice.

34:13  Who gave Him a charge over the earth? Or who hath disposed the whole world?

13  And who is he that made the whole world under heaven, and all things therein?

13  What other is established over the earth? Or whom has he placed over the world, which he made?

34:14  If He set His heart upon man, if He gather unto Himself his spirit and his breath;

14  For if he would confine, and restrain his spirit with himself;

14  But, if he directs his heart towards him, he will draw his spirit and breath to himself.

34:15  All flesh shall perish together, and man shall return unto dust.

15  all flesh would die together, and every mortal would return to the earth, whence also he was formed.

15  Then all flesh would perish together, and man would return again to dust.

34:16  If now thou hast understanding, hear this; hearken to the voice of my words.

16  Take heed lest he rebuke thee: hear this, hearken to the voice of words.

16  Therefore, if you have understanding, hear what is said, and heed the sound of my eloquence.

34:17  Shall even one that hateth right govern? And wilt thou condemn Him that is just and mighty--

17  Behold then the one that hates iniquities, and that destroys the wicked, who is for ever just.

17  Is he that does not love judgment able to be corrected? And how can you so greatly condemn him who is just?

34:18  Is it fit to say to a king: 'Thou art base'? Or to nobles: 'Ye are wicked'?--

18  He is ungodly that says to a king, Thou art a transgressor, that says to princes, O most ungodly one.

34:19  That respecteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? For they all are the work of His hands.

19  Such a one as would not reverence the face of an honourable man, neither knows how to give honour to the great, so as that their persons should be respected.

19  And not partial to princes, and does not discriminate against the poor (for they are all the work of his hands);

34:20  In a moment they die, even at midnight; the people are shaken and pass away, and the mighty are taken away without hand.

20  But it shall turn out vanity to them, to cry and beseech a man; for they dealt unlawfully, the poor being turned aside from their right.

20  They will die suddenly, and the people will be troubled in the middle of the night, but they will pass through it, and the violent will be taken away without a hand.

34:21  For His eyes are upon the ways of a man, and He seeth all his goings.

21  For he surveys the works of men, and nothing of what they do has escaped him.

34:22  There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

22  Neither shall there be a place for the workers of iniquity to hide themselves.

34:23  For He doth not appoint a time unto any man, when he should go before God in judgment.

23  For he will not lay upon a man more than right.

23  For it is no longer within the power of man to enter into judgment with God.

34:24  He breaketh in pieces mighty men without inquisition, and setteth others in their stead.

24  For the Lord looks down upon all men, who comprehends unsearchable things, glorious also and excellent things without number.

34:25  Therefore He taketh knowledge of their works; and He overturneth them in the night, so that they are crushed.

25  Who discovers their works, and will bring night about upon them, and they shall be brought low.

34:26  He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others;

26  And he quite destroys the ungodly, for they are seen before him.

34:27  Because they turned aside from following Him, and would not have regard to any of His ways;

27  They, as if with great diligence, have withdrawn from him, and they refused to understand all his ways,

34:28  So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto Him, and He heareth the cry of the afflicted.

28  so as to bring before him the cry of the needy; for he will hear the cry of the poor.

28  The prayer of the poor comes to him, and he hears the cry of the afflicted.

34:29  When He giveth quietness, who then can condemn? And when He hideth His face, who then can behold Him? whether it be done unto a nation, or unto a man, alike;

29  And he will give quiet, and who will condemn? and he will hide his face, and who shall see him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man also

34:30  That the godless man reign not, that there be none to ensnare the people.

30  causing a hypocrite to be king, because of the waywardness of the people.

30  He sees to it that an impious and wicked man shall not reign over the people.

34:31  For hath any said unto God: 'I have borne chastisement, though I offend not;

31  For there is one that says to the Mighty One, I have received blessings; I will not take a pledge

34:32  That which I see not teach Thou me; if I have done iniquity, I will do it no more'?

32  I will see apart from myself: do thou shew me if I have done unrighteousness; I will not do so any more.

32  Inform me now, teach me, if you have committed iniquity;

34:33  Shall His recompense be as thou wilt? For thou loathest it, so that thou must choose, and not I; therefore speak what thou knowest.

33  Does God require this of you because it is displeasing to you? For you were the first to speak, and not I. But if you know something better, speak.

33  I will not answer you any more, because you have sinned, for you have been examined, and not I; therefore speak out what you know.

34:34  Men of understanding will say unto me, yea, every wise man that heareth me

34  Because the wise in heart shall say this, and a wise man listens to my word.

34  Let men of understanding speak to me, and let a wise man listen to me.

34:35  'Job speaketh without knowledge, and his words are without discernment.'

35  But Job has not spoken with understanding, his words are not uttered with knowledge.

34:36  Would that Job were tried unto the end, because of his answering like wicked men.

36  Howbeit do thou learn, Job: no longer make answer as the foolish

36  My father, let Job be tested even to the end; may you not retreat from a man of iniquity.

34:37  For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God.

37  that we add not to our sins: for iniquity will be reckoned against us, if we speak many words before the Lord.

35:1  Moreover Elihu answered and said

1  After this, Eliu again spoke in this way

1  AGAIN Elihu spoke, and said,

35:2  Thinkest thou this to be thy right, or sayest thou: 'I am righteousness before God',

2  What is this that thou thinkest to be according to right? who art thou that thou hast said, I am righteous before the Lord?

2  Do you think you were justified in saying, I have been found blameless by God?

35:3  That thou inquirest: 'What advantage will it be unto Thee?' And: 'What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?'

3  I will answer thee, and thy three friends.

3  For you said, “Having done what is right does not please you,” and, “How will it benefit you, if I sin?”

35:4  I will give thee answer, and thy companions with thee.

4  Look up to the sky and see; and consider the clouds, how high they are above thee.

4  And so, I will respond to your words, and to your friends who are with you.

35:5  Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the skies, which are higher than thou.

5  If thou hast sinned, what wilt thou do?

35:6  If thou hast sinned, what doest thou against Him? And if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto Him?

6  and if too thou hast transgressed much, what canst thou perform?

6  If you sin, how will it hurt him? And if your iniquities are multiplied, what will you do against him?

35:7  If thou be righteous, what givest thou Him? Or what receiveth He of thy hand?

7  Furthermore, if you act justly, what will you give him, or what will he receive from your hand?

35:8  Thy wickedness concerneth a man as thou art; and thy righteousness a son of man.

8  Your impiety may hurt a man who is like you, though your justice may help the son of the man.

8  Your wickedness is to yourself; and your righteousness is to yourself.

35:9  By reason of the multitude of oppressions they cry out; they cry for help by reason of the arm of the mighty.

9  They that are oppressed of a multitude will be ready to cry out; they will call for help because of the arm of many.

9  Because of the multitude of false accusers, they will cry out; and they will lament because of the strong arm of the tyrants.

35:10  But none saith: 'Where is God my Maker, who giveth songs in the night;

10  Yet he has not said: “Where is God, who made me, who has given songs in the night,

10  And none says, Where is God my Maker, who gives counsel in the night,

35:11  Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?'

11  who makes me to differ from the four-footed beasts of the earth, and from the birds of the sky?

11  who teaches us in addition to the beasts of the earth, and who educates us along with the birds of the air?”

35:12  There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.

12  There they shall cry, and none shall hearken, even because of the insolence of wicked men.

12  They cry, but he does not answer them,

35:13  Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.

13  For the Lord desires not to look on error, for he is the Almighty One.

35:14  Yea, when thou sayest thou canst not see Him--the cause is before Him; therefore wait thou for Him.

14  He beholds them that perform lawless deeds, and he will save me: and do thou plead before him, if thou canst praise him, as it is possible even now.

14  And so, when you say, “He does not examine,” be judged before him, but wait for him.

35:15  And now, is it for nought that He punished in His anger? And hath He not full knowledge of arrogance?

15  For he is not now regarding his wrath, nor has he noticed severely any trespass.

15  For, at the present time, he does not bring forth his fury, nor does he punish sin exceedingly.

35:16  But Job doth open his mouth in vanity; he multiplieth words without knowledge.

16  Yet Job vainly opens his mouth, in ignorance he multiplies words.

16  Therefore, Job has opened his mouth in vain and has multiplied words without knowledge.

36:1  Elihu also proceeded, and said

1  And Elius further continued, and said,

1  Continuing in a similar manner, Eliu had this to say

36:2  Suffer me a little, and I will tell thee; for there are yet words on God's behalf.

2  Wait from me yet a little while, that I may teach thee: for there is yet speech in me.

2  Bear with me for a little while and I will show you; for I have still more to say in favor of God.

36:3  I will fetch my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.

3  Having fetched my knowledge from afar, and according to my works,

3  I will review my knowledge from the beginning, and I will prove my Maker to be just.

36:4  For truly my words are not false; one that is upright in mind is with thee.

4  I will speak just things truly, and thou shalt not unjustly receive unjust words.

36:5  Behold, God is mighty, yet He despiseth not any; He is mighty in strength of understanding.

5  But know that the Lord will not cast off an innocent man: being mighty in strength of wisdom,

5  God does not abandon the powerful, for he himself is also powerful.

36:6  He preserveth not the life of the wicked; but giveth to the poor their right.

6  he will not by any means save alive the ungodly: and he will grant the judgement of the poor.

6  But he does not save the impious, though he grants judgment to the poor.

36:7  He withdraweth not His eyes from the righteous; but with kings upon the throne He setteth them for ever, and they are exalted.

7  He will not turn away his eyes from the righteous, but they shall be with kings on the throne: and he will establish them in triumph, and they shall be exalted.

7  He does not withdraw his eyes from the righteous; he sets kings on the throne; yea, they are exalted for ever.

36:8  And if they be bound in fetters, and be holden in cords of affliction;

8  But they that are bound in fetters shall be holden in cords of poverty.

8  And, if they are in captivity, or are bound with the chains of poverty,

36:9  Then He declareth unto them their work, and their transgressions, that they have behaved themselves proudly.

9  And he shall recount to them their works, and their transgressions, for such will act with violence.

9  he will reveal to them their works, as well as their sinfulness, in that they were violent.

36:10  He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity.

10  But he will hearken to the righteous: and he has said that they shall turn from unrighteousness.

10  Likewise, he will open their ears to his correction, and he will speak to them, so that they may return from iniquity.

36:11  If they hearken and serve Him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.

11  If they listen and obey, they will fill their days with goodness and complete their years in glory.

36:12  But if they hearken not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge.

12  But he preserves not the ungodly; because they are not willing to know the Lord, and because when reproved they were disobedient.

12  But if they will not listen, they will pass away by the sword and will be consumed by foolishness.

36:13  But they that are godless in heart lay up anger; they cry not for help when He bindeth them.

13  And the hypocrites in heart will array wrath against themselves; they will not cry, because he has bound them.

13  The false and the crafty provoke the wrath of God, yet they do not cry out to him when they are chained.

36:14  Their soul perisheth in youth, and their life as that of the depraved.

14  Therefore let their soul die in youth, and their life be wounded by messengers of death.

14  They shall die in youth, and their life is snatched by famine.

36:15  He delivereth the afflicted by His affliction, and openeth their ear by tribulation.

15  But the meek shall be delivered through his meekness, and he opens their way in time of oppression.

36:16  Yea, He hath allured thee out of distress into a broad place, where there is no straitness; and that which is set on thy table is full of fatness;

16  And he has also enticed thee out of the mouth of the enemy

16  Therefore, he will save you from the narrow mouth very widely, even though it has no foundation under it. Moreover, your respite at table will be full of fatness.

36:17  And thou art full of the judgment of the wicked; judgment and justice take hold on them.

17  there is a deep gulf and a rushing stream beneath it, and thy table came down full of fatness. Judgment shall not fail from the righteous;

17  Your case has been judged like that of the impious; you will withdraw your plea and your judgment.

36:18  For beware of wrath, lest thou be led away by thy sufficiency; neither let the greatness of the ransom turn thee aside.

18  He will not threaten you with a raging anger, nor will he cause you to be in need of a great ransom.

36:19  Will thy riches avail, that are without stint, or all the forces of thy strength?

19  He shall join you, that he may deliver you; you shall not be distressed by any of those who are mighty in power.

36:20  Desire not the night, when peoples are cut off in their place.

20  And draw not forth all the mighty men by night, so that the people should go up instead of them.

20  He shall deliver you from those who drive you away in the night, and give peoples for your sake, and the nations for your life.

36:21  Take heed, regard not iniquity; for this hast thou chosen rather than affliction.

21  But take heed lest thou do that which is wrong: for of this thou has made choice because of poverty.

21  Be careful that you do not turn to iniquity; for, after your misery, you have begun to follow this.

36:22  Behold, God doeth loftily in His power; who is a teacher like Him?

22  Behold, the Mighty One shall prevail by his strength: for who is powerful as he is?

22  Behold, God is exalted in his strength, and there is no one like him among the law-givers.

36:23  Who hath enjoined Him His way? Or who hath said: 'Thou hast wrought unrighteousness'?

23  And who is he that examines his works? or who can say, he has wrought injustice?

23  Who is able to investigate his ways? And who can say, “You have done iniquity,” to him?

36:24  Remember that thou magnify His work, whereof men have sung.

24  Remember that his works are great beyond those which men have attempted.

36:25  All men have looked thereon; man beholdeth it afar off.

25  Every man has seen in himself, how many mortals are wounded.

25  All men consider him; and each one ponders from a distance.

36:26  Behold, God is great, beyond our knowledge; the number of His years is unsearchable.

26  Behold, the Mighty One is great, and we shall not know him: the number of his years is even infinite.

36:27  For He draweth away the drops of water, which distil rain from His vapour;

27  And the drops of rain are numbered by him, and shall be poured out in rain to form a cloud.

27  For if we should number the pillars of the heaven, and bind the drops of rain by themselves, which the skies do drop in their season;

36:28  Which the skies pour down and drop upon the multitudes of men.

28  The ancient heavens shall flow, and the clouds overshadow innumerable mortals: he has fixed a time to cattle, and they know the order of rest. Yet by all these things thy understanding is not astonished, neither is thy mind disturbed in thy body.

28  they flow from the clouds that are woven above everything.

36:29  Yea, can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, the crashings of His pavilion?

29  And though one should understand the outspreadings of the clouds, or the measure of his tabernacle;

29  If he wills it, he extends the clouds as his tent

36:30  Behold, He spreadeth His light upon it; and He covereth the depths of the sea.

30  behold he will stretch his bow against him, and he covers the bottom of the sea.

30  and shines with his light from above; likewise, he covers the oceans within his tent.

36:31  For by these He judgeth the peoples; He giveth food in abundance.

31  For by them he will judge the nations: he will give food to him that has strength.

31  For he judges the people by these things, and he gives food to a multitude of mortals.

36:32  He covereth His hands with the lightning, and giveth it a charge that it strike the mark.

32  He has hidden the light in his hands, and given charge concerning it to the interposing cloud.

32  Within his hands, he hides the light, and he commands it to come forth again.

36:33  The noise thereof telleth concerning it, the cattle also concerning the storm that cometh up.

33  He announces it to his friend, for it is his possession and he is able to reach out to it.

33  He shows his possessions to his friends, and to the wicked also.

37:1  At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved out of its place.

1  At this, my heart became frightened, and it has been moved from its place.

37:2  Hear attentively the noise of His voice, and the sound that goeth out of His mouth.

2  Hear thou a report by the anger of the Lord’s wrath, and a discourse shall come out of his mouth.

2  Pay close attention to the alarm of his voice and to the sound that proceeds from his mouth.

37:3  He sendeth it forth under the whole heaven, and His lightning unto the ends of the earth.

3  He beholds everything under the heavens, and his light reaches beyond the ends of the earth.

3  Under the whole of heaven the people shall praise him, and his light shines upon the ends of the earth.

37:4  After it a voice roareth; He thundereth with the voice of His majesty; and He stayeth them not when His voice is heard.

4  After him shall be a cry with a loud voice; he shall thunder with the voice of his excellency, yet he shall not cause men to pass away, for one shall hear his voice.

4  After this, a noise will sound; he will thunder with the voice of his greatness, and it will not be tracked down, yet his voice will be obeyed.

37:5  God thundereth marvellously with His voice; great things doeth He, which we cannot comprehend.

5  The Mighty One shall thunder wonderfully with his voice: for he has done great things which we knew not;

5  God will thunder with his voice miraculously, for he performs great and unsearchable things.

37:6  For He saith to the snow: 'Fall thou on the earth'; likewise to the shower of rain, and to the showers of His mighty rain.

6  commanding the snow, Be thou upon the earth, and the stormy rain, and the storm of the showers of his might.

37:7  He sealeth up the hand of every man, that all men whom He hath made may know it.

7  He signs the hand of all men, so that each one may know his works.

7  He limits the power of every man, that all men may know his work.

37:8  Then the beasts go into coverts, and remain in their dens.

8  And the wild beasts come in under the covert, and rest in their lair.

8  The beast will enter his hiding-place, and he will remain in his cave.

37:9  Out of the Chamber cometh the storm; and cold out of the north.

9  Troubles come on out of the secret chambers, and cold from the mountain-tops.

9  From the interior, a storm will come forth, and a cold winter from the north.

37:10  By the breath of God ice is given, and the breadth of the waters is straitened.

10  And from the breath of the Mighty One he will send frost; and he guides the water in whatever way he pleases.

10  As God breathes out, frost forms, and the waters are poured forth very widely again.

37:11  Yea, He ladeth the thick cloud with moister, He spreadeth abroad the cloud of His lightning;

11  Crops desire clouds, and the clouds scatter their light.

37:12  And they are turned round about by His guidance, that they may do whatsoever He commandeth them upon the face of the habitable world

12  And he will carry round the encircling clouds by his governance, to perform their works: whatsoever he shall command them,

12  It shines all around, wherever the will of him that governs them will lead, to anywhere he will command, over the whole face of the earth,

37:13  Whether it be for correction, or for His earth, or for mercy, that He cause it to come.

13  this has been appointed by him on the earth, whether for correction, or for his land, or if he shall find him an object for mercy.

37:14  Hearken unto this, O Job; stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.

14  Hearken to this, O Job: stand still, and be admonished of the power of the Lord.

14  Listen to these things, Job. Stand up and consider the wonders of God.

37:15  Dost thou know how God enjoineth them, and causeth the lightning of His cloud to shine?

15  We know that God has disposed his works, having made light out of darkness.

15  Do you know when God ordered the rains, so as to show the light of his clouds?

37:16  Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of Him who is perfect in knowledge?

16  And he knows the divisions of the clouds, and the signal overthrows of the ungodly.

16  Do you know the great paths of the clouds, and the perfect sciences?

37:17  Thou whose garments are warm, when the earth is still by reason of the south wind;

17  But thy robe is warm, and there is quiet upon the land.

37:18  Canst thou with Him spread out the sky, which is strong as a molten mirror?

18  Perhaps you have made the heavens with him, which are very solid, as if they had been cast from brass.

18  Were you with him when he spread out the great sky, helping him hold it up?

37:19  Teach us what we shall say unto Him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.

19  Wherefore teach me, what shall we say to him? and let us cease from saying much.

19  Reveal to us what we should say to him, for, of course, we are wrapped in darkness.

37:20  Shall it be told Him that I would speak? Or should a man wish that he were swallowed up?

20  Have I a book or a scribe my me, that I may stand and put man to silence?

20  Relate to him that which he has said; and if a man speaks, surely he shall be consumed.

37:21  And now men see not the light which is bright in the skies; but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them.

21  But the light is not visible to all: it shines afar off in the heavens, as that which is from him in the clouds.

21  Although they do not see the light, the air will be thickened suddenly into clouds, and the wind, passing by, will drive them away.

37:22  Out of the north cometh golden splendour, about God is terrible majesty.

22  From the north come the clouds shining like gold: in these great are the glory and honour of the Almighty;

22  Riches arrive from the north, and fearful praise reaches out to God.

37:23  The Almighty, whom we cannot find out, is excellent in power, yet to judgment and plenteous justice He doeth no violence.

23  and we do not find another his equal in strength: as for him that judges justly, dost thou not think that he listens?

37:24  Men do therefore fear Him; He regardeth not any that are wise of heart.

24  Wherefore men shall fear him; and the wise also in heart shall fear him.

24  Therefore, men will fear him, and all those who seem to themselves to be wise, will not dare to contemplate him.

38:1  Then YHWH answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said

1  And after Elius had ceased from speaking, the Lord spoke to Job through the whirlwind and clouds, saying,

1  But the Lord, responding to Job from a whirlwind, said

38:2  Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

2  Who is this that hides counsel from me, and confines words in his heart, and thinks to conceal them from me?

38:3  Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto Me.

3  Gird your waist like a man. I will question you, and you must answer me.

3  Gird up your loins now, like a valiant man; for I will question you, and you shall answer me.

38:4  Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast the understanding.

4  Where were you, when I set the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.

38:5  Who determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who stretched the line upon it?

5  who set the measures of it, if thou knowest? or who stretched a line upon it?

38:6  Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner-stone thereof,

6  On what are its rings fastened? and who is he that laid the corner-stone upon it?

6  Upon what have its bases been grounded, and who set forth its cornerstone,

38:7  When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

7  When the stars were made, all my angels praised me with a loud voice.

7  When did I create the morning stars, and all the angels shouted for joy?

38:8  Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, and issued out of the womb;

8  And I shut up the sea with gates, when it rushed out, coming forth out its mother’s womb.

8  Who enclosed the sea with doors, when it broke forth as if issuing from the womb,

38:9  When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,

9  And I made a cloud its clothing, and swathed it in mist.

9  when I stationed a cloud as its garment and wrapped it in a mist as if swaddling an infant?

38:10  And prescribed for it My decree, and set bars and doors,

10  And I set bounds to it, surrounding it with bars and gates.

10  I encircled it with my limits, and I positioned its bars and doors.

38:11  And said: 'Thus far shalt thou come, but no further; and here shall thy proud waves be stayed'?

11  And I said to it, Hitherto shalt thou come, but thou shalt not go beyond, but thy waves shall be confined within thee.

11  And I said: “This far you will approach, and you will proceeded no further, and here you will break your swelling waves.”

38:12  Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days began, and caused the dayspring to know its place;

12  Or did I order the morning light in thy time; and did the morning star then first see his appointed place;

38:13  That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it?

13  to lay hold of the extremities of the earth, to cast out the ungodly out of it?

13  And did you hold the extremities of the earth, shaking them, and have you shaken the impious out of it?

38:14  It is changed as clay under the seal; and they stand as a garment.

14  Or didst thou take clay of the ground, and form a living creature, and set it with the power of speech upon the earth?

14  The seal will be restored like clay, and it will remain in place like a garment.

38:15  But from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm is broken.

15  And hast thou removed light from the ungodly, and crushed the arm of the proud?

15  From the impious, the light will be taken away, and the exalted arm will be broken.

38:16  Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep?

16  Or hast thou gone to the source of the sea, and walked in the tracks of the deep?

16  Have you entered the depths of the sea, and have you taken a walk in the uttermost parts of the abyss?

38:17  Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee? Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?

17  And do the gates of death open to thee for fear; and did the porters of hell quake when they saw thee?

38:18  Hast thou surveyed unto the breadths of the earth? Declare, if thou knowest it all.

18  And hast thou been instructed in the breadth of the whole earth under heaven? tell me now, what is the extent of it?

18  Have you considered the breadth of the earth? If you know all things, reveal them to me.

38:19  Where is the way to the dwelling of light, and as for darkness, where is the place thereof;

19  And in what kind of a land does the light dwell? and of what kind is the place of darkness?

19  Which is the way that holds the light, and which is the place of darkness?

38:20  That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?

20  If thou couldest bring me to their utmost boundaries, and if also thou knowest their paths;

20  Do you know its borders and the path to its house?

38:21  Thou knowest it, for thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great!

21  So then, did you know when you were to be born? And did you know the number of your days?

21  Do you remember when you were born, and do you know if you will live many days?

38:22  Hast thou entered the treasuries of the snow, or hast thou seen the treasuries of the hail,

22  But hast thou gone to the treasures of snow? and hast thou seen the treasures of hail?

22  Have you been admitted into the storehouses of the snows, and have you gazed upon the stockpile of the brimstone,

38:23  Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

23  And is there a store of them, for thee against the time of thine enemies, for the day of wars and battle?

23  which I have prepared for the time of the enemy, for the day of the battle and the war?

38:24  By what way is the light parted, or the east wind scattered upon the earth?

24  And whence proceeds the frost? or whence is the south wind dispersed over the whole world under heaven?

24  Or in what manner is light distributed, and whence the wind comes forth upon the earth?

38:25  Who hath cleft a channel for the waterflood, or a way for the lightning of the thunder;

25  Who causes a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder?

38:26  To cause it to rain on a land where no man is, on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

26  to rain upon the land where there is no man, the wilderness, where there is not a man in it; so as to feed the untrodden and uninhabited land,

38:27  To satisfy the desolate and waste ground, and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

27  and cause it to send forth a crop of green herbs?

27  so that it would fill impassable and desolate places, and would bring forth green plants?

38:28  Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

28  Who is the rain’s father? and who has generated the drops of dew?

38:29  Out of whose womb came the ice? And the hoar-frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?

29  And out of whose womb comes the ice? and who has produced the frost in the sky,

29  From whose womb did the ice proceed, and who created the frost from the air?

38:30  The waters are congealed like stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

30  which descends like flowing water? who has terrified the face of the ungodly?

38:31  Canst thou bind the chains of the Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?

31  Will you have the strength to join together the sparkling stars of the Pleiades, or are you able to disperse the circling of Arcturus?

31  Can you stop the movement of the Pleiades, or have you seen the path of Orion?

38:32  Canst thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season? Or canst thou guide the Bear with her sons?

32  Or wilt thou reveal Mazuroth in his season, and the evening star with his rays? Wilt thou guide them?

32  Can you bring forth the morning star, in its time, and make the evening star rise over the sons of the earth?

38:33  Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? Canst thou establish the dominion thereof in the earth?

33  And knowest thou the changes of heaven, or the events which take place together under heaven?

33  Do you know the order of heaven, and can you explain its rules here on the earth?

38:34  Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?

34  And wilt thou call a cloud with thy voice, and will it obey thee with a violent shower of much rain?

34  Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, so that an onslaught of waters will cover you?

38:35  Canst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee: 'Here we are'?

35  And wilt thou send lightnings, and they shall go? and shall they say to thee, What is thy pleasure?

35  Can you send forth lightning bolts, and will they go, and on returning, say to you: “Here we are?”

38:36  Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who hath given understanding to the mind?

36  And who has given to women skill in weaving, or knowledge of embroidery?

36  Who placed discernment in the guts of man, or who gave the rooster intelligence?

38:37  Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,

37  And who is he that numbers the clouds in wisdom, and has bowed the heaven down to the earth?

38:38  When the dust runneth into a mass, and the clods cleave fast together?

38  For it is spread out as dusty earth, and I have cemented it as one hewn stone to another.

38  Who has poured out soil upon the earth, and who has made the steep rocks?

38:39  Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lioness? Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

39  Will you seize prey for the lioness, and will you sustain the lives of her young,

39  Who has given prey for the lion? Or filled the appetite of the young lions?

38:40  When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?

40  For they fear in their lairs, and lying in wait couch in the woods.

40  Who has multiplied the beasts in the field? Or who has provided food for the raven?

38:41  Who provideth for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry unto God, and wander for lack of food?

41  And who has prepared food for the raven? for its young ones wander and cry to the Lord, in search of food.

41  For its young ones cry to God, and faint for lack of food.

39:1  Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? Or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve?

1  Say if thou knowest the time of the bringing forth of the wild goats of the rock, and if thou hast marked the calving of the hinds

1  Do you know at what time the wild goats have given birth among the rocks, or do you observe the deer when they go into labor?

39:2  Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? Or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?

2  and if thou has hast numbered the full months of their being with young, and if thou hast relieved their pangs

2  Have you numbered the months since their conception, and do you know at what time they gave birth?

39:3  They bow themselves, they bring forth their young, they cast out their fruit.

3  and hast reared their young without fear; and wilt thou loosen their pangs?

39:4  Their young ones wax strong, they grow up in the open field; they go forth, and return not again.

4  Their young will break forth; they will be multiplied with offspring: their young will go forth, and will not return to them.

4  They bring up their young ones, until they grow up and are weaned.

39:5  Who hath sent out the wild ass free? Or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass?

5  Who has left the wild ass to be free, and made him to escape the yoke?

39:6  Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the salt land his dwelling-place.

6  whereas I made his habitation the wilderness, and the salt land his coverts.

6  I have given a house in solitude to him, and his tabernacle is in the salted land.

39:7  He scorneth the tumult of the city, neither heareth he the shoutings of the driver.

7  He despises the crowded city; he does not pay attention to the bellow of the tax collector.

39:8  The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.

39:9  Will the wild-ox be willing to serve thee? Or will he abide by thy crib?

9  And will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or to lie down at thy manger?

9  Will the rhinoceros be willing to serve you, and will he remain in your stall?

39:10  Canst thou bind the wild-ox with his band in the furrow? Or will he harrow the valleys after thee?

10  Can you bind the yoke on the neck of the unicorn? Or will he harrow in a rugged place?

39:11  Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? Or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?

11  Will you put your faith in his great strength, and delegate your labors to him?

39:12  Wilt thou rely on him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather the corn of thy threshing-floor?

12  Do you trust him, that he will winnow your threshing and gather your grain into the barn?

39:13  The wing of the ostrich beateth joyously; but are her pinions and feathers the kindly stork's?

13  The peacock has a beautiful wing: if the stork and the ostrich conceive, it is worthy of notice,

13  The ostrich rouses herself up haughtily; then she comes and makes her nest;

39:14  For she leaveth her eggs on the earth, and warmeth them in dust,

14  When she leaves eggs behind in the earth, will you perhaps warm them in the dust?

14  But she leaves her eggs in the earth to be warmed on the ground.

39:15  And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may trample them.

15  and has forgotten that the foot will scatter them, and the wild beasts of the field trample them.

39:16  She is hardened against her young ones, as if they were not hers; though her labour be in vain, she is without fear;

16  She has hardened herself against her young ones, as though she bereaved not herself: she labours in vain without fear.

16  She multiplies her young ones, though they do not stay with her; although her labor is in vain, she has no fear

39:17  Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath He imparted to her understanding.

17  For God has withholden wisdom from her, and not given her a portion in understanding.

17  God has increased wisdom, but he has not given her a portion of it.

39:18  When the time cometh, she raiseth her wings on high, and scorneth the horse and his rider.

18  In her season she will lift herself on high; she will scorn the horse and his rider.

39:19  Hast thou given the horse his strength? Hast thou clothed his neck with fierceness?

19  Will you supply strength to the horse, or envelope his throat with neighing?

19  Have you given the horse strength? Have you clothed his neck with armour?

39:20  Hast thou made him to leap as a locust? The glory of his snorting is terrible.

20  And hast thou clad him in perfect armour, and made his breast glorious with courage?

20  Can you make him move like the locust? Or can you make him afraid?

39:21  He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength; he goeth out to meet the clash of arms.

21  He paws exulting in the plain, and goes forth in strength into the plain.

21  He digs at the earth with his hoof; he jumps around boldly; he advances to meet armed men.

39:22  He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword.

22  He laughs to scorn a king as he meets him, and will by no means turn back from the sword.

22  He despises fear; he does not turn away from the sword.

39:23  The quiver rattleth upon him, the glittering spear and the javelin.

23  The bow and sword resound against him; and his rage will swallow up the ground

23  Above him, the quiver rattles, the spear and the shield shake.

39:24  He swalloweth the ground with storm and rage; neither believeth he that it is the voice of the horn.

24  and he will not believe until the trumpet sounds.

24  Seething and raging, he drinks up the earth; neither does he pause when the blast of the trumpet sounds.

39:25  As oft as he heareth the horn he saith: 'Ha, ha!' and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.

25  And when the trumpet sounds, he says, Aha! and afar off he smells the war with prancing and neighing.

39:26  Doth the hawk soar by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?

26  And does the hawk remain steady by thy wisdom, having spread out her wings unmoved, looking toward the region of the south?

26  Does the hawk grow feathers by means of your wisdom, spreading her wings towards the south?

39:27  Doth the vulture mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?

27  And does the eagle rise at thy command, and the vulture remain sitting over his nest,

27  Will the eagle lift herself up at your command and make her nest in steep places?

39:28  She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the stronghold.

28  on a crag of a rock, and in a secret place?

28  He dwells and lodges on the rock, upon the cliff of the precipice.

39:29  From thence she spieth out the prey; her eyes behold it afar off.

29  Thence he seeks food, his eyes observe from far.

29  He is sustained by his prey, his eyes behold afar off.

39:30  Her young ones also suck up blood; and where the slain are, there is she.

30  And his young ones roll themselves in blood, and wherever the carcasses may be, immediately they are found.

30  Her young will drink blood, and wherever the carcass will be, she is there immediately.

40:1  Moreover YHWH answered Job, and said

Jb39:31  And the Lord God answered Job, and said,

40:2  Shall he that reproveth contend with the Almighty? He that argueth with God, let him answer it.

Jb39:32  Will any one pervert judgement with the Mighty One? and he that reproves God, let him return it for answer.

2  Many are the counsels of God; he who reproves God must answer for it.

40:3  Then Job answered YHWH, and said

Jb39:33  And Job answered and said to the Lord,

40:4  Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer Thee? I lay my hand upon my mouth.

Jb39:34  Why do I yet plead? being rebuked even while reproving the Lord: hearing such things, whereas I am nothing: and what shall I answer to these arguments? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.

Jb39:34  What could I possibly answer, since I have been speaking thoughtlessly? I will place my hand over my mouth.

40:5  Once have I spoken, but I will not answer again; yea, twice, but I will proceed no further.

Jb39:35  I have spoken once; but I will not do so a second time.

Jb39:35  One thing I have spoken, which I wish I had not said; and another, to which I will add no more.

40:6  Then YHWH answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said

6  And the Lord yet again answered and spoke to Job out of the cloud, saying,

6  But the Lord, answering Job out of the whirlwind, said

40:7  Gird up thy loins now like a man; I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto Me.

7  Nay, gird up now thy loins like a man; and I will ask thee, and do thou answer me.

7  Gird your waist like a man. I will question you, and you must answer me.

40:8  Wilt thou even make void My judgment? Wilt thou condemn Me, that thou mayest be justified?

8  Do not set aside my judgement: and dost thou think that I have dealt with thee in any other way, than that thou mightest appear to be righteous?

8  Will you make my judgment null and void; and will you condemn me so that you may be justified?

40:9  Or hast thou an arm like God? And canst thou thunder with a voice like Him?

9  And do you have an arm like God, or a voice like thunder?

40:10  Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency, and array thyself with glory and beauty.

10  Assume now a lofty bearing and power; and clothe thyself with glory and honour.

10  Envelop yourself with splendor, and raise yourself up on high, and be glorious, and put on splendid garments.

40:11  Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath; and look upon every one that is proud, and abase him.

11  And send forth messengers with wrath; and lay low every haughty one.

11  Scatter the arrogant with your wrath, and, when you see all the arrogant, humble them.

40:12  Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.

12  Bring down also the proud man; and consume at once the ungodly.

12  And cast the sinners into their place.

40:13  Hide them in the dust together; bind their faces in the hidden place.

13  And hide them together in the earth; and fill their faces with shame.

13  Bury them in the earth together; cover their faces with fine dust.

40:14  Then will I also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save thee.

14  Then will I confess that thy right hand can save thee.

14  Then will I also give you credit when your own right hand has saved you.

40:15  Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.

15  But now look at the wild beasts with thee; they eat grass like oxen.

15  Behold, the behemoth, whom I created along with you, eats hay like an ox.

40:16  Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the stays of his body.

16  His strength is in his lower back, and his power is in the center of his abdomen.

16  Lo, his strength is in his loins, and his tail stands erect like a cedar tree.

40:17  He straineth his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together.

17  He sets up his tail like a cypress; and his nerves are wrapped together.

17  The sinews of his thighs bulge out.

40:18  His bones are as pipes of brass; his gristles are like bars of iron.

18  His sides are sides of brass; and his backbone is as cast iron.

40:19  He is the beginning of the ways of God; He only that made him can make His sword to approach unto him.

19  This is the chief of the creation of the Lord; made to be played with by his angels.

19  He is the chief among God's creations; for he made him powerful to fight.

40:20  Surely the mountains bring him forth food, and all the beasts of the field play there.

20  And when he has gone up to a steep mountain, he causes joy to the quadrupeds in the deep.

20  He roams about the mountains, and all the wild beasts of the field lie down under his protection.

40:21  He lieth under the lotus-trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens.

21  He lies under trees of every kind, by the papyrus, and reed, and bulrush.

21  He sleeps in the shadows, under the cover of branches, and in moist places.

40:22  The lotus-trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about.

22  And the great trees make a shadow over him with their branches, and so do the bushes of the field.

22  The shadows cover his shadow; the willows of the brook will encircle him.

40:23  Behold, if a river overflow, he trembleth not; he is confident, though the Jordan rush forth to his mouth.

23  If there should be a flood, he will not perceive it; he trust that Jordan will rush up into his mouth.

23  Behold, he will drink a river and not be amazed, and he has confidence that the Jordan could flow into his mouth.

40:24  Shall any take him by his eyes, or pierce through his nose with a snare?

24  He will seize him through his eyes, as if with a hook, and he will bore through his nostrils, as if with stakes.

24  Can one take him with a hook, or catch him with a net? Can one snare him in a trap, or can one bind his tongue with a rope?

41:2  Canst thou put a ring into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a hook?

Jb40:21  Or wilt thou fasten a ring in his nostril, and bore his lip with a clasp?

Jb40:21  Can you place a ring in his nose, or bore through his jaw with an arm band?

41:3  Will he make many supplications unto thee? or will he speak soft words unto thee?

Jb40:22  Will he address thee with a petition? softly, with the voice of a suppliant?

Jb40:22  Will he offer many prayers to you, or speak to you quietly?

41:4  Will he make a covenant with thee, that thou shouldest take him for a servant for ever?

Jb40:23  And will he make a covenant with thee? and wilt thou take him for a perpetual servant?

Jb40:23  Will he form a covenant with you, and will you accept him as a servant forever?

41:5  Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? Or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?

Jb40:24  And wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or bind him as a sparrow for a child?

Jb40:24  Will you play with him as with a bird, or tether him for your handmaids?

41:6  Will the bands of fishermen make a banquet of him? Will they part him among the merchants?

Jb40:25  And do the nations feed upon him, and the nations of the Phoenicians share him?

Jb40:25  Will your friends cut him into pieces, will dealers distribute him?

41:7  Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish-spears?

Jb40:26  And all the ships come together would not be able to bear the mere skin of his tail; neither shall they carry his head in fishing-vessels.

Jb40:26  Will you fill up bags with his hide, and let his head be used as a home for fishes?

41:8  Lay thy hand upon him; think upon the battle, thou wilt do so no more.

Jb40:27  But thou shalt lay thy hand upon him once, remembering the war that is waged by his mouth; and let it not be done any more.

8  Try to capture him; such a battle you will have! You will never forget it.

41:9  Behold, the hope of him is in vain; shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?

9  Hast thou not seen him? and hast thou not wondered at the things said of him? - Dost thou not fear because preparation has been made by me? for who is there that resists me?

9  Behold, Job, you now are set free from your afflictions. So your God will also remove your bitterness.

41:10  None is so fierce that dare stir him up; who then is able to stand before Me?

10  Or who will resist me, and abide, since the whole world under heaven is mine?

10  I will not rouse him, as the cruel would do, for who is able to withstand my countenance?

41:11  Who hath given Me anything beforehand, that I should repay him? Whatsoever is under the whole heaven is Mine.

11  I will not be silent because of him: though because of his power one shall pity his antagonist.

11  Who has pre-eminence over me, so that I should surrender?

41:12  Would I keep silence concerning his boastings, or his proud talk, or his fair array of words?

12  Who will open the face of his garment? and who can enter within the fold of his breastplate?

12  Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine.

41:13  Who can uncover the face of his garment? Who shall come within his double bridle?

13  Who will open the doors of his face? terror is round about his teeth.

13  I will not keep silence because of his power, and the might of his sinews.

41:14  Who can open the doors of his face? Round about his teeth is terror.

14  His inwards are as brazen plates, and the texture of his skin as a smyrite stone.

14  Who has removed his skin? Who can come near him when the net is lowered?

41:15  His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.

15  One part cleaves fast to another, and the air cannot come between them.

15  Who can open the doors of his mouth? His teeth are terrible round about.

41:16  One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.

16  They will remain united each to the other: they are closely joined, and cannot be separated.

16  His mouth is tied up, and closely shut, as with a seal.

41:17  They are joined one to another; they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.

17  At his sneezing a light shines, and his eyes are as the appearance of the morning star.

17  His teeth are so close together that no air can come between them.

41:18  His sneezings flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.

18  Out of his mouth proceed as it were burning lamps, and as it were hearths of fire are cast abroad.

18  They are joined one to another, they stick together so that they cannot be separated.

41:19  Out of his mouth go burning torches, and sparks of fire leap forth.

19  Lamps proceed from his mouth, like torches of fire burning brightly.

19  His appearance is full of light, and his eyes are like rays of the dawn.

41:20  Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot and burning rushes.

20  His breath is as live coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth.

20  Smoke passes out of his nostrils, like a pot that is heated and boiling.

41:21  His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.

21  And power is lodged in his neck, before him destruction runs.

21  Out of his nostrils goes smoke, like a flame spreading round the sides of a pot.

41:22  In his neck abideth strength, and dismay danceth before him.

22  The flesh also of his body is joined together: if one pours violence upon him, he shall not be moved.

41:23  The flakes of his flesh are joined together; they are firm upon him; they cannot be moved.

23  His heart is firm as a stone, and it stands like an unyielding anvil.

23  The parts of his body work in harmony together. He will send lightning bolts against him, and they will not be carried to another place.

41:24  His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, firm as the nether millstone.

24  And when he turns, he is a terror to the four-footed wild beasts which leap upon the earth.

24  His meat is good and fat, and it is nourishing.

41:25  When he raiseth himself up, the mighty are afraid; by reason of despair they are beside themselves.

25  If spears should come against him, men will effect nothing, either with the spear or the breast-plate.

25  His heart is never made to quake for fear, but is firm like a stone; yea as hard as flint.

41:26  If one lay at him with the sword, it will not hold; nor the spear, the dart, nor the pointed shaft.

26  For he considers iron as chaff, and brass as rotten wood.

26  Because of the fear of him, the mighty are afraid;

41:27  He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.

27  And the strong are humbled.

41:28  The arrow cannot make him flee; slingstones are turned with him into stubble.

28  Mauls are counted as stubble; and he laughs to scorn the waving of the firebrand.

28  The wound of the sword is of no effect; the lances of the mighty he removes.

41:29  Clubs are accounted as stubble; he laugheth at the rattling of the javelin.

29  His lair is formed of sharp points; and all the gold of the sea under him is an immense quantity of clay.

29  He considers iron like straw, and brass like rotten wood.

41:30  Sharpest potsherds are under him; he spreadeth a threshing-sledge upon the mire.

30  He makes the deep boil like a brazen caldron; and he regards the sea as a pot of ointment,

30  The beams of the sun will be under him, and he will dispense gold to them as if it were clay.

41:31  He maketh the deep to boil like a pot; he maketh the sea like a seething mixture.

31  and the lowest part of the deep as a captive: he reckons the deep as his range.

31  He will make the depths of the sea boil like a pot, and he will set it to bubble just as ointments do.

41:32  He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.

32  A path will shine after him; he will esteem the abyss as if it were weakening with age.

32  With his strong body he walks upon the ground.

41:33  Upon earth there is not his like, who is made to be fearless.

33  He brings to destruction whatever is proud.

41:34  He looketh at all high things; he is king over all the proud beasts.

34  He sees every prominent thing; he is king over all the sons of arrogance.

34  He is a king over all things in the deep.
