1  Canst thou draw out leviathan with a fish-hook? or press down his tongue with a cord?

Jb40:20  But wilt thou catch the serpent with a hook, and put a halter about his nose?

Jb40:20  Can you draw out the leviathan with a hook, and can you bind his tongue with a cord?

2  Canst thou put a ring into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a hook?

Jb40:21  Or wilt thou fasten a ring in his nostril, and bore his lip with a clasp?

Jb40:21  Can you place a ring in his nose, or bore through his jaw with an arm band?

3  Will he make many supplications unto thee? or will he speak soft words unto thee?

Jb40:22  Will he address thee with a petition? softly, with the voice of a suppliant?

Jb40:22  Will he offer many prayers to you, or speak to you quietly?

4  Will he make a covenant with thee, that thou shouldest take him for a servant for ever?

Jb40:23  And will he make a covenant with thee? and wilt thou take him for a perpetual servant?

Jb40:23  Will he form a covenant with you, and will you accept him as a servant forever?

5  Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? Or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?

Jb40:24  And wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or bind him as a sparrow for a child?

Jb40:24  Will you play with him as with a bird, or tether him for your handmaids?

6  Will the bands of fishermen make a banquet of him? Will they part him among the merchants?

Jb40:25  And do the nations feed upon him, and the nations of the Phoenicians share him?

Jb40:25  Will your friends cut him into pieces, will dealers distribute him?

7  Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish-spears?

Jb40:26  And all the ships come together would not be able to bear the mere skin of his tail; neither shall they carry his head in fishing-vessels.

Jb40:26  Will you fill up bags with his hide, and let his head be used as a home for fishes?

8  Lay thy hand upon him; think upon the battle, thou wilt do so no more.

Jb40:27  But thou shalt lay thy hand upon him once, remembering the war that is waged by his mouth; and let it not be done any more.

8  Try to capture him; such a battle you will have! You will never forget it.

9  Behold, the hope of him is in vain; shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?

9  Hast thou not seen him? and hast thou not wondered at the things said of him? - Dost thou not fear because preparation has been made by me? for who is there that resists me?

9  Behold, Job, you now are set free from your afflictions. So your God will also remove your bitterness.

10  None is so fierce that dare stir him up; who then is able to stand before Me?

10  Or who will resist me, and abide, since the whole world under heaven is mine?

10  I will not rouse him, as the cruel would do, for who is able to withstand my countenance?

11  Who hath given Me anything beforehand, that I should repay him? Whatsoever is under the whole heaven is Mine.

11  I will not be silent because of him: though because of his power one shall pity his antagonist.

11  Who has pre-eminence over me, so that I should surrender?

12  Would I keep silence concerning his boastings, or his proud talk, or his fair array of words?

12  Who will open the face of his garment? and who can enter within the fold of his breastplate?

12  Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine.

13  Who can uncover the face of his garment? Who shall come within his double bridle?

13  Who will open the doors of his face? terror is round about his teeth.

13  I will not keep silence because of his power, and the might of his sinews.

14  Who can open the doors of his face? Round about his teeth is terror.

14  His inwards are as brazen plates, and the texture of his skin as a smyrite stone.

14  Who has removed his skin? Who can come near him when the net is lowered?

15  His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.

15  One part cleaves fast to another, and the air cannot come between them.

15  Who can open the doors of his mouth? His teeth are terrible round about.

16  One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.

16  They will remain united each to the other: they are closely joined, and cannot be separated.

16  His mouth is tied up, and closely shut, as with a seal.

17  They are joined one to another; they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.

17  At his sneezing a light shines, and his eyes are as the appearance of the morning star.

17  His teeth are so close together that no air can come between them.

18  His sneezings flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.

18  Out of his mouth proceed as it were burning lamps, and as it were hearths of fire are cast abroad.

18  They are joined one to another, they stick together so that they cannot be separated.

19  Out of his mouth go burning torches, and sparks of fire leap forth.

19  Lamps proceed from his mouth, like torches of fire burning brightly.

19  His appearance is full of light, and his eyes are like rays of the dawn.

20  Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot and burning rushes.

20  His breath is as live coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth.

20  Smoke passes out of his nostrils, like a pot that is heated and boiling.

21  His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.

21  And power is lodged in his neck, before him destruction runs.

21  Out of his nostrils goes smoke, like a flame spreading round the sides of a pot.

22  In his neck abideth strength, and dismay danceth before him.

22  The flesh also of his body is joined together: if one pours violence upon him, he shall not be moved.

23  The flakes of his flesh are joined together; they are firm upon him; they cannot be moved.

23  His heart is firm as a stone, and it stands like an unyielding anvil.

23  The parts of his body work in harmony together. He will send lightning bolts against him, and they will not be carried to another place.

24  His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, firm as the nether millstone.

24  And when he turns, he is a terror to the four-footed wild beasts which leap upon the earth.

24  His meat is good and fat, and it is nourishing.

25  When he raiseth himself up, the mighty are afraid; by reason of despair they are beside themselves.

25  If spears should come against him, men will effect nothing, either with the spear or the breast-plate.

25  His heart is never made to quake for fear, but is firm like a stone; yea as hard as flint.

26  If one lay at him with the sword, it will not hold; nor the spear, the dart, nor the pointed shaft.

26  For he considers iron as chaff, and brass as rotten wood.

26  Because of the fear of him, the mighty are afraid;
