1  AND IT came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel asked YHWH, saying: 'Who shall go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?'

1  After the death of Joshua, the sons of Israel consulted the Lord, saying, “Who will ascend before us, against the Canaanite, and who will be the commander of the war?”

1  NOW after the death of Joshua, the servant of the LORD, the children of Israel inquired of the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

2  And YHWH said: 'Judah shall go up; behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.'

2  And the Lord said, Judas shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

3  And Judah said unto Simeon his brother: 'Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot.' So Simeon went with him.

3  And Judas said to his brother Symeon, Come up with me into my lot, and let us array ourselves against the Chananites, and I also will go with thee into thy lot: and Symeon went with him.

4  And Judah went up; and YHWH delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they smote of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

5  And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

6  But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

6  Then Adonibezek fled. And they pursued him and captured him, and they cut off the ends of his hands and feet.

7  And Adoni-bezek said: 'Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered food under my table; as I have done, so God hath requited me.' And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

7  And Adonibezek said: “Seventy kings, with the ends of their hands and feet amputated, have been gathering the remnants of food under my table. Just as I have done, so has God repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

7  And the lord of Bezek said, Seventy kings, with their thumbs and great toes cut off, used to pick up bread under my table; as I have done, so God has requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

8  And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

8  Then the sons of Judah, besieging Jerusalem, seized it. And they struck it with edge of the sword, delivering the entire city to be burned.

9  And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites that dwelt in the hill-country, and in the South, and in the Lowland.

9  And afterward, descending, they fought against the Canaanites who were living in the mountains, and in the south, and in the plains.

10  And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron--now the name of Hebron beforetime was Kiriath-arba--and they smote Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

10  And Judas went to the Chananite who dwelt in Chebron; and Chebron came out against him; and the name of Chebron before was Cariatharbocsepher: and they smote Sessi, and Achiman, and Tholmi, children of Enac.

10  And Judah, going forth against the Canaanites who were living at Hebron, (the name of which from antiquity was Kiriath-Arba) struck down Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

11  And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir--now the name of Debir beforetime was Kiriath-sepher.

11  And they went up thence to the inhabitants of Dabir; but the name of Dabir was before Cariathsepher, the city of Letters.

11  And continuing on from there, he went to the inhabitants of Debir, the old name of which was Kiriath-Sepher, that is, the City of Letters.

12  And Caleb said: 'He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.'

12  And Chaleb said, Whosoever shall smite the city of Letters, and shall first take it, I will give to him Ascha my daughter to wife.

12  And Caleb said, “Whoever will strike Kiriath-Sepher, and will lay waste to it, I will give to him my daughter Achsah as wife.”

13  And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

13  And Gothoniel the younger son of Kenez the brother of Chaleb took it; and Chaleb gave him his daughter Ascha to wife.

13  And when Othniel, the son of Kenaz, a younger brother of Caleb, had seized it, he gave his daughter Achsah to him in marriage.

14  And it came to pass, when she came unto him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field; and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her: 'What wouldest thou?'

14  And it came to pass as she went in, that Gothoniel urged her to ask a field of her father; and she murmured and cried from off her ass, Thou hast sent me forth into a south land: and Chaleb said to her, What is thy request?

14  And as she was traveling on a journey, her husband admonished her, so that she would request a field from her father. And since she had sighed while sitting on her donkey, Caleb said to her, “What is it?”

15  And she said unto him: 'Give me a blessing; for that thou hast set me in the Southland, give me therefore springs of water.' And Caleb gave her the Upper Springs and the Nether Springs.

15  But she responded: “Give a blessing to me. For you have given me a dry land. Also give a watered land.” Therefore, Caleb gave to her the upper watered land and the lower watered land.

16  And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.

16  Now the sons of the Kenite, the relative of Moses, ascended from the City of Palms, with the sons of Judah, into the wilderness of his lot, which is toward the south of Arad. And they lived with him.

17  And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they smote the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

17  Then Judah went out with his brother Simeon, and together they struck the Canaanites who were living at Zephath, and they put them to death. And the name of the city was called Hormah, that is, Anathema.

18  Also Judah took Gaza with the border thereof, and Ashkelon with the border thereof, and Ekron with the border thereof.

18  But Judas did not inherit Gaza nor her coasts, nor Ascalon nor her coasts, nor Accaron nor her coasts, nor Azotus nor the lands around it.

18  And Judah seized Gaza, with its parts, and Ashkelon as well as Ekron, with their borders.

19  And YHWH was with Judah; and he drove out the inhabitants of the hill-country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

19  And the Lord was with Judas, and he inherited the mountain; for they were not able to destroy the inhabitants of the valley, for Rechab prevented them.

20  And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses had spoken; and he drove out thence the three sons of Anak.

20  And they gave Chebron to Chaleb, as Moses said; and thence he inherited the three cities of the children of Enac.

20  And just as Moses had said, they gave Hebron to Caleb, who destroyed out of it the three sons of Anak.

21  And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwelt with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem, unto this day.

21  But the sons of Benjamin did not wipe out the Jebusite inhabitants of Jerusalem. And the Jebusite has lived with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem, even to the present day.

22  And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el; and YHWH was with them.

22  The house of Joseph also ascended against Bethel, and the Lord was with them.

23  And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Beth-el--now the name of the city beforetime was Luz.

23  And they encamped and surveyed Baethel: and the name of the city before was Luza.

23  For when they were besieging the city, which was previously called Luz,

24  And the watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him: 'Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with thee.'

24  they saw a man departing from the city, and they said to him, “Reveal to us the entrance to the city, and we will act with mercy toward you.”

25  And he showed them the entrance into the city, and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family.

25  And when he had revealed it to them, they struck the city with the edge of the sword. But that man, and all his relatives, they released.

26  And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day.

26  And having been sent away, he went out to the land of the Hittites, and he built a city there, and he called it Luz. And so it is called, even to the present day.

27  And Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its towns, nor of Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites were resolved to dwell in that land.

27  And Manasse did not drive out the inhabitants of Baethsan, which is a city of Scythians, nor her towns, nor her suburbs; nor Thanac, nor her towns; nor the inhabitants of Dor, nor her suburbs, nor her towns; nor the inhabitant of Balac, nor her suburbs, nor her towns; nor the inhabitants of Magedo, nor her suburbs, nor her towns; nor the inhabitants of Jeblaam, nor her suburbs, nor her towns; and the Chananite began to dwell in this land.

27  Likewise, Manasseh did not destroy Bethshean and Taanach, with their villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor and Ibleam and Megiddo, with their villages. And the Canaanite began to live with them.

28  And it came to pass, when Israel was waxen strong, that they put the Canaanites to task-work, but did in no wise drive them out.

28  Then, after Israel had grown strong, he made them tributaries, but he was not willing to destroy them.

29  And Ephraim drove not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

29  And now Ephraim did not put to death the Canaanite, who was living at Gezer; instead, he lived with him.

30  Zebulun drove not out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributary.

31  Asher drove not out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;

31  And Aser did not drive out the inhabitants of Accho, and that people became tributary to him, nor the inhabitants of Dor, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor the inhabitants of Dalaph, nor Aschazi, nor Chebda, nor Nai, nor Ereo.

31  Likewise, Asher did not destroy the inhabitants of Acco and Sidon, Ahlab and Achzib, and Helbah, and Aphik, and Rehob.

32  but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.

32  And Aser dwelt in the midst of the Chananite who inhabited the land, for he could not drive him out.

32  And he lived in the midst of the Canaanites, the inhabitants of that land, for he did not put them to death.

33  Naphtali drove not out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributary unto them.

33  And Nephthali did not drive out the inhabitants of Baethsamys, nor the inhabitants of Baethanach; and Nephthali dwelt in the midst of the Chananite who inhabited the land: but the inhabitants of Bethsamys and of Baetheneth became tributary to them.

33  Naphtali also did not wipe out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Bethanath. And he lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land. And the Beth-shemeshites and Bethanathites were tributaries to him.

34  And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill-country; for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley.

34  And the Amorite hemmed in the sons of Dan on the mountain, and did not give them a place, so that they might descend to the flatlands.

35  But the Amorites were resolved to dwell in Harheres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim; yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributary.

36  And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela, and upward.

36  Now the border of the Amorite was from the Ascent of the Scorpion, to the Rock and the higher places.

2:1  And the angel of YHWH came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said: 'I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I swore unto your fathers; and I said: I will never break My covenant with you;

1  And an angel of the Lord went up from Galgal to the place of weeping, and to Baethel, and to the house of Israel, and said to them, Thus says the Lord, I brought you up out of Egypt, and I brought you into the land which I sware to your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant that I have made with you.

1  AND the angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bikhian, and said to the children of Israel, Thus says the LORD, I have brought you up from the land of Egypt, and have brought you into the land which I swore to your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

2:2  and ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall break down their altars; but ye have not hearkened unto My voice; what is this ye have done?

2  but only if you would not form a pact with the inhabitants of this land. Instead, you should overturn their altars. Yet you were not willing to listen to my voice. Why have you done this?

2:3  Wherefore I also said: I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be unto you as snares, and their gods shall be a trap unto you.'

3  And I said, I will not drive them out from before you, but they shall be for a distress to you, and their gods shall be to you for an offence.

3  For this reason, I am not willing to destroy them before your face, so that you may have enemies, and so that their gods may be your ruin.”

2:4  And it came to pass, when the angel of YHWH spoke these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

4  And when the Angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, they lifted up their voice, and they wept.

2:5  And they called the name of that place Bochim; and they sacrificed there unto YHWH.

5  And the name of that place was called, the Place of Weeping, or the Place of Tears. And they immolated victims to the Lord in that place.

5  And the people called the name of that place Bikhian; and they sacrificed there to the LORD.

2:6  Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.

6  And Joshua dismissed the people, and they went every man to his inheritance, to inherit the land.

6  Then Joshua dismissed the people, and the sons of Israel went away, each one to his own possession, so that they might obtain it.

2:7  And the people served YHWH all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the YHWH, that He had wrought for Israel.

7  And they served the Lord, during all his days, and during all the days of the elders, who lived for a long time after him, and who knew all the works of the Lord, which he had done for Israel.

2:8  And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of YHWH, died, being a hundred and ten years old.

8  Then Joshua, the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being one hundred and ten years old.

2:9  And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

2:10  And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers; and there arose another generation after them, that knew not YHWH, nor yet the work which He had wrought for Israel.

10  And all that generation were laid to their fathers: and another generation rose up after them, who knew not the Lord, nor yet the work which he wrought in Israel.

10  And that entire generation was gathered to their fathers. And there rose up others, who had not known the Lord and the works that he had done for Israel.

2:11  And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of YHWH, and served the Baalim.

11  And the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they served the Baals.

2:12  And they forsook YHWH, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and worshipped them; and they provoked the YHWH.

12  And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had led them away from the land of Egypt. And they followed foreign gods and the gods of the peoples who were living around them, and they adored them. And they provoked the Lord to wrath,

2:13  And they forsook YHWH, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

13  forsaking him, and serving Baal and Ashtaroth.

13  So they forsook the LORD and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

2:14  And the anger of YHWH was kindled against Israel, and He delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and He gave them over into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

14  And the Lord, having become angry against Israel, delivered them into the hands of plunderers, who seized them and sold them to the enemies that were living on all sides. Neither were they able to withstand their adversaries.

14  land the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers, and they plundered them, and he delivered them into the hands of their enemies round about them, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.

2:15  Whithersoever they went out, the hand of YHWH was against them for evil, as the YHWH had spoken, and as the LORD had sworn unto them; and they were sore distressed.

15  among whomsoever they went; and the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord spoke, and as the Lord sware to them; and he greatly afflicted them.

15  Instead, wherever they wanted to go, the hand of the Lord was upon them, just as he said and just as he swore to them. And they were greatly afflicted.

2:16  And YHWH raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

16  And the Lord raised up judges, and the Lord save them out of the hands of them that spoiled them: and yet they hearkened not to the judges,

16  Then the LORD raised up judges among the Israelites, and they delivered them out of the hand of those who plundered them.

2:17  And yet they hearkened not unto their judges, for they went astray after other gods, and worshipped them; they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of YHWH; they did not so.

17  for they went a whoring after other gods, and worshipped them; and they turned quickly out of the way in which their fathers walked to hearken to the words of the Lord; they did not so.

17  Fornicating with foreign gods and adoring them, they quickly deserted the way along which their fathers had advanced. And having heard the commandments of the Lord, they did all things to the contrary.

2:18  And when YHWH raised them up judges, then the YHWH was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it repented the LORD because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and crushed them.

18  And because the Lord raised them up judges, so the Lord was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was moved at their groaning by reason of them that besieged them and afflicted them.

18  And while the Lord was raising up the judges, in their days, he was moved to mercy, and he listened to the groaning of the afflicted, and he freed them from the slaughter of their oppressors.

2:19  But it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to worship them; they left nothing undone of their practices, nor of their stubborn way.

2:20  And the anger of YHWH was kindled against Israel; and He said: 'Because this nation have transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto My voice;

20  And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and said, Forasmuch as this nation has forsaken my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not hearkened to my voice,

20  And the fury of the Lord was enraged against Israel, and he said: “For this people has made void my covenant, which I had formed with their fathers, and they have despised listening to my voice.

2:21  I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations that Joshua left when he died;

21  therefore I will not any more cast out a man of the nations before their face, which Joshua the son of Naue left in the land. And the Lord left them,

21  And so, I will not destroy the nations that Joshua left behind when he died,

2:22  that by them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of YHWH to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.'

22  so that, by them, I may test Israel, as to whether or not they will keep the way of the Lord, and walk in it, just as their fathers kept it.”

2:23  So YHWH left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered He them into the hand of Joshua.

23  So the Lord will leave these nations, so as not to cast them out suddenly; and he delivered them not into the hand of Joshua.

23  Therefore, the Lord left all these nations, and he was not willing to quickly overthrow them, nor did he deliver them into the hands of Joshua.

3:1  Now these are the nations which YHWH left, to prove Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

1  And these are the nations which the Lord left to prove Israel with them, all that had not known the wars of Chanaan.

1  These are the nations which the Lord left, so that by them he might instruct Israel and all who had not known the wars of the Canaanites,

3:2  only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as beforetime knew nothing thereof;

2  Only for the sake of the generations of Israel, to teach them war, only the men before them knew them not.

2  so that afterward their sons might learn to contend with their enemies, and to have a willingness to do battle

3:3  namely, the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Zidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entrance of Hamath.

3  The five lordships of the Phylistines, and every Chananite, and the Sidonian, and the Evite who dwelt in Libanus from the mount of Aermon to Laboemath.

3  the five princes of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites who were living on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-Hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath.

3:4  And they were there, to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of YHWH, which He commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

4  And this was done in order to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commands of the Lord, which he charged their fathers by the hand of Moses.

4  And he left them, so that by them he might test Israel, as to whether or not they would listen to the commandments of the Lord, which he instructed to their fathers by the hand of Moses.

3:5  And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites;

5  So the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hivites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hittites, and Jebusites;

3:6  and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

3:7  And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of YHWH, and forgot the YHWH their God, and served the Baalim and the Asheroth.

7  And they did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they forgot their God, while serving the Baals and Ashtaroth.

3:8  Therefore the anger of YHWH was kindled against Israel, and He gave them over into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram-naharaim; and the children of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.

8  And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and sold them into the hand of Chusarsathaim king of Syria of the rivers: and the children of Israel served Chusarsathaim eight years.

8  And the Lord, having become angry with Israel, delivered them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim, the king of Mesopotamia, and they served him for eight years.

3:9  And when the children of Israel cried unto YHWH, the YHWH raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

9  And the children of Israel cried to the Lord; and the Lord raised up a saviour to Israel, and he saved them, Gothoniel the son of Kenez, the brother of Chaleb younger than himself.

9  And they cried out to the Lord, who raised up for them a savior, and he freed them, namely, Othniel, the son of Kenaz, a younger brother of Caleb.

3:10  And the spirit of YHWH came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and the YHWH delivered Cushan- rishathaim king of Aram into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim.

3:11  And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

3:12  And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of YHWH; and the YHWH strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.

12  And the children of Israel continued to do evil before the Lord: and the Lord strengthened Eglom king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil before the Lord.

12  Then the sons of Israel resumed doing evil in the sight of the Lord, who strengthened Eglon, the king of Moab, against them because they did evil in his sight.

3:13  And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and smote Israel, and they possessed the city of palm-trees.

13  And he joined to him the sons of Ammon and the sons of Amalek. And he went forth and struck Israel, and he possessed the City of Palms.

3:14  And the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

3:15  But when the children of Israel cried unto YHWH, the YHWH raised them up a saviour, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed; and the children of Israel sent a present by him unto Eglon the king of Moab.

15  And the children of Israel cried to the Lord; and he raised up to them a saviour, Aod the son of Gera a son of Jemeni, a man who used both hands alike: and the children of Israel sent gifts by his hand to Eglom king of Moab.

3:16  And Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he girded it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

16  And Aod made himself a dagger of two edges, of a span long, and he girded it under his cloak upon his right thigh.

16  And he made for himself a two-edged sword, having a handle, reaching to the middle, the length of the palm of a hand. And he was girded with it under his cloak, on the right thigh.

3:17  And he offered the present unto Eglon king of Moab--now Eglon was a very fat man.

17  And he went, and brought the presents to Eglom king of Moab, and Eglom was a very handsome man.

17  And he brought the present to Eglon king of Moab; and King Eglon was a simple-minded man.

3:18  And when he had made an end of offering the present, he sent away the people that bore the present.

18  And it came to pass when Aod had made an end of offering his gifts, that he dismissed those that brought the gifts.

18  And when he had presented the gifts to him, he followed out his companions, who had arrived with him.

3:19  But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said: 'I have a secret errand unto thee, O king.' And he said: 'Keep silence.' And all that stood by him went out from him.

19  And he himself returned from the quarries that are by Galgal; and Aod said, I have a secret errand to thee, O king! and Eglom said to him, Be silent: and he sent away from his presence all who waited upon him.

19  And then, returning from Gilgal where the idols were, he said to the king, “I have a secret word for you, O king.” And he ordered silence. And when all those who were around him had departed,

3:20  And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting by himself alone in his cool upper chamber. And Ehud said: 'I have a message from God unto thee.' And he arose out of his seat.

20  Ehud entered to him. Now he was sitting alone in a summer upper room. And he said, “I have a word from God to you.” And immediately he rose up from his throne.

3:21  And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly.

21  And it came to pass as he arose, that Aod stretched forth his left hand, and took the dagger off his right thigh, and plunged it into his belly;

21  And Ehud extended his left hand, and he took the dagger from his right thigh. And he thrust it into his abdomen

3:22  And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, for he drew not the sword out of his belly; and it came out behind.

22  and drove in also the haft after the blade, and the fat closed in upon the blade, for he drew not out the dagger from his belly.

22  so strongly that the handle followed the blade into the wound, and was enclosed by the great amount of fat. Neither did he withdraw the sword. Instead, he left it in the body just as he had struck with it. And immediately, by the private parts of nature, the filth of the bowels went out.

3:23  Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper chamber upon him, and locked them.

23  And Aod went out to the porch, and passed out by the appointed guards, and shut the doors of the chamber upon him, and locked them.

23  Then Ehud carefully closed the doors of the upper room. And securing the bars,

3:24  Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and, behold, the doors of the upper chamber were locked; and they said: 'Surely he is covering his feet in the cabinet of the cool chamber.'

24  And he went out: and Eglom’s servants came, and saw, and behold, the doors of the upper chamber were locked; and they said, Does he not uncover his feet in the summer-chamber?

24  he departed by a back exit. And the servants of the king, entering, saw that the doors of the upper room were closed, and they said, “Perhaps he is emptying his bowels in the summer room.”

3:25  And they tarried till they were ashamed; and, behold, he opened not the doors of the upper chamber; therefore they took the key, and opened them; and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

25  And after waiting a long time, until they were embarrassed, and seeing that no one opened the door, they took the key, and opening it, they found their lord lying dead on the ground.

25  And they waited for a long time; and seeing that he did not open the doors of the upper chamber, they took keys and opened them; and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the floor.

3:26  And Ehud escaped while they lingered, having passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirah.

26  And Aod escaped while they were in a tumult, and no one paid attention to him; and he passed the quarries, and escaped to Setirotha.

26  But Ehud, while they were in confusion, escaped and passed by the place of the idols, from which he had returned. And he arrived at Seirath.

3:27  And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a horn in the hill-country of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill-country, and he before them.

27  And immediately he sounded the trumpet on Mount Ephraim. And the sons of Israel descended with him, he himself advancing at the front.

3:28  And he said unto them: 'Follow after me; for YHWH hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.' And they went down after him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and suffered not a man to pass over.

28  And he said to them, Come down after me, for the Lord God has delivered our enemies, even Moab, into our hand; and they went down after him, and seized on the fords of Jordan before Moab, and he did not suffer a man to pass over.

28  And he said to them: “Follow me. For the Lord has delivered our enemies, the Moabites, into our hands.” And they descended after him, and they occupied the fords of the Jordan, which cross over to Moab. And they did not permit anyone to cross.

3:29  And they smote of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valour; and there escaped not a man.

29  And so, they struck down the Moabites at that time, about ten thousand, all strong and robust men. None of them were able to escape.

29  And they slew of the Moabites at that time about ten thousand men, all great and valiant men; and there escaped not a man.

3:30  So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

3:31  And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who smote of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox-goad; and he also saved Israel.

31  And after him rose up Samegar the son of Dinach, and smote the Philistines to the number of six hundred men with a ploughshare such as is drawn by oxen; and he too delivered Israel.

31  After him, there was Shamgar, the son of Anath, who struck down six hundred men of the Philistines with a plowshare. And he also defended Israel.

4:1  And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of YHWH, when Ehud was dead.

1  But after the death of Ehud, the sons of Israel resumed doing evil in the sight of the Lord.

4:2  And YHWH gave them over into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth-goiim.

2  And the Lord sold the children of Israel into the hand of Jabin king of Chanaan, who ruled in Asor; and the chief of his host was Sisara, and he dwelt in Arisoth of the Gentiles.

2  And the Lord delivered them into the hands of Jabin, the king of Canaan, who reigned at Hazor. And he had a commander of his army named Sisera, but this man lived at Harosheth of the Gentiles.

4:3  And the children of Israel cried unto YHWH; for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

3  And the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord. For he had nine hundred chariots with scythes, and he vehemently oppressed them for twenty years.

4:4  Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, she judged Israel at that time.

4  Now there was a prophetess, Deborah, the wife of Lappidoth, who judged the people in that time.

4:5  And she sat under the palm-tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in the hill-country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.

5  And she was sitting under a palm tree, which was called by her name, between Ramah and Bethel, on Mount Ephraim. And the sons of Israel went up to her for every judgment.

4:6  And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him: 'Hath not YHWH, the God of Israel, commanded, saying: Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?

6  And Debbora sent and called Barac the son of Abineem out of Cades Nephthali, and she said to him, Has not the Lord God of Israel commanded thee? and thou shalt depart to mount Thabor, and shalt take with thyself ten thousand men of the sons of Nephthali and of the sons of Zabulon.

4:7  And I will draw unto thee to the brook Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thy hand.

7  Then I will lead to you, at the place of the torrent Kishon, Sisera, the leader of the army of Jabin, with his chariots and the entire multitude. And I will deliver them into your hand.’ ”

7  And let them come with you to the river Kishon against Sisera, the general of Nabin's army, and against his chariots, and against his forces; and I will deliver him into your hands.

4:8  And Barak said unto her: 'If thou wilt go with me, then I will go; but if thou wilt not go with me, I will not go.'

8  And Barac said to her, If thou wilt go with me, I will go; and if thou wilt not go, I will not go; for I know not the day on which the Lord prospers his messenger with me.

4:9  And she said: 'I will surely go with thee; notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thy honour; for YHWH will give Sisera over into the hand of a woman.' And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.

9  She said to him: “Indeed, I will go with you. But due to this change, the victory shall not be reputed to you. And so Sisera will be delivered into the hand of a woman.” Therefore, Deborah rose up, and she traveled with Barak to Kedesh.

4:10  And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali together to Kedesh; and there went up ten thousand men at his feet; and Deborah went up with him.

10  And he, summoning Zebulun and Naphtali, ascended with ten thousand fighting men, having Deborah in his company.

10  And Barak mobilized Zebulun and Naphtali to Rakim; and ten thousand men went up with him; and Deborah also went up with him.

4:11  Now Heber the Kenite had severed himself from the Kenites, even from the children of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far as Elon-bezaanannim, which is by Kedesh.

11  And Chaber the Kenite had removed from Caina, from the sons of Jobab the father-in-law of Moses, and pitched his tent by the oak of the covetous ones, which is near Kedes.

11  Now Heber, the Kenite, had previously withdrawn from the rest of the Kenites, his brothers, the sons of Hobab, the relative of Moses. And he had pitched his tents as far as the valley that is called Zaanannim, which was near Kedesh.

4:12  And they told Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor.

12  And it was reported to Sisera that Barak, the son of Abinoam, had ascended to Mount Tabor.

4:13  And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth-goiim, unto the brook Kishon.

13  And Sisara summoned all his chariots, nine hundred chariots of iron and all the people with him, from Arisoth of the Gentiles to the brook of Kison.

13  And he gathered together the nine hundred chariots with scythes, and the entire army, from Harosheth of the Gentiles to the torrent Kishon.

4:14  And Deborah said unto Barak: 'Up; for this is the day in which YHWH hath delivered Sisera into thy hand; is not the YHWH gone out before thee?' So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.

14  And Debbora said to Barac, Rise up, for this is the day on which the Lord has delivered Sisara into thy hand, for the Lord shall go forth before thee: and Barac went down from mount Thabor, and ten thousand men after him.

14  And Deborah said to Barak: “Rise up. For this is the day on which the Lord delivers Sisera into your hands. For he is your commander.” And so, Barak descended from Mount Tabor, and the ten thousand fighting men with him.

4:15  And YHWH discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot, and fled away on his feet.

15  And the Lord struck Sisera with great fear, and all his chariots and all his multitude with the edge of the sword, in the sight of Barak, so much so that Sisera, leaping from his chariot, fled on foot.

4:16  But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth-goiim; and all the host of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; there was not a man left.

16  And Barak pursued the fleeing chariots, and the army, as far as Harosheth of the Gentiles. And the entire multitude of the enemy was cut down, unto utter annihilation.

4:17  Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

17  And Sisara fled on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Chaber the Kenite his friend: for there was peace between Jabin king of Asor and the house of Chaber the Kenite.

17  But Sisera, while fleeing, arrived at the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber, the Kenite. For there was peace between Jabin, the king of Hazor, and the house of Heber, the Kenite.

4:18  And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him: 'Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not.' And he turned in unto her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug.

18  And Jael went, out to meet Sisara, and said to him, Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me, fear not: and he turned aside to her into the tent; and she covered him with a mantle.

18  Therefore, Jael went out to meet Sisera, and she said to him: “Enter to me, my lord. Enter, you should not be afraid.” And he entered her tent, and having been covered by her with a cloak,

4:19  And he said unto her: 'Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty.' And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.

19  he said to her: “Give me, I beg you, a little water. For I am very thirsty.” And she opened a bottle of milk, and she gave him to drink. And she covered him.

4:20  And he said unto her: 'Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and inquire of thee, and say: Is there any man here? that thou shalt say: No.'

20  And Sisara said to her, Stand now by the door of the tent, and it shall come to pass if any man come to thee, and ask of thee, and say, Is there any man here? then thou shalt say, There is not.

20  And Sisera said to her: “Stand before the door of the tent. And if anyone arrives, questioning you and saying, ‘Could there be any man here?’ you shall respond, ‘There is no one.’ ”

4:21  Then Jael Heber's wife took a tent-pin, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the pin into his temples, and it pierced through into the ground; for he was in a deep sleep; so he swooned and died.

21  And so Jael, the wife of Heber, took a spike from the tent, and also took a mallet. And entering unseen and with silence, she placed the spike over the temple of his head. And striking it with the mallet, she drove it through his brain, as far as the ground. And so, joining deep sleep to death, he fell unconscious and died.

4:22  And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him: 'Come, and I will show thee the man whom thou seekest.' And he came unto her; and, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the tent-pin was in his temples.

22  And behold, Barak arrived, in pursuit of Sisera. And Jael, going out to meet him, said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.” And when he had entered her tent, he saw Sisera lying dead, with the spike fixed in his temples.

4:23  So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel.

23  Thus did God humble Jabin, the king of Canaan, on that day, before the sons of Israel.

4:24  And the hand of the children of Israel prevailed more and more against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

24  And they increased every day. And with a strong hand they overpowered Jabin, the king of Canaan, until they wiped him out.

5:1  Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying

1  In that day, Deborah and Barak, the son of Abinoam, sang out, saying

5:2  When men let grow their hair in Israel, when the people offer themselves willingly, bless ye YHWH.

2  “All you of Israel who have willingly offered your lives to danger, bless the Lord!

2  With requital has Israel been avenged; praise the LORD with a song for avenging Israel.

5:3  Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, unto YHWH will I sing; I will sing praise to the YHWH, the God of Israel.

3  Hear, ye kings, and hearken, rulers: I will sing, it is I who will sing to the Lord, it is I, I will sing a psalm to the Lord the God of Israel.

3  Listen, O kings! Pay attention, O princes! It is I, it is I, who will sing to the Lord. I will sing a psalm to the Lord, the God of Israel!

5:4  YHWH, when Thou didst go forth out of Seir, when Thou didst march out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens also dropped, yea, the clouds dropped water.

4  O Lord, when you departed from Seir, and you crossed through the regions of Edom, the earth and the heavens were moved, and the clouds rained down water.

5:5  The mountains quaked at the presence of YHWH, even yon Sinai at the presence of the YHWH, the God of Israel.

5  The mountains were shaken before the face of the Lord Eloi, this Sina before the face of the Lord God of Israel.

5:6  In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways ceased, and the travellers walked through byways.

5:7  The rulers ceased in Israel, they ceased, until that thou didst arise, Deborah, that thou didst arise a mother in Israel.

7  The mighty men in Israel failed, they failed until Debbora arose, until she arose a mother in Israel.

7  The strong men ceased, and they rested in Israel, until Deborah rose up, until a mother rose up in Israel.

5:8  They chose new gods; then was war in the gates; was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?

8  The Lord chose new wars, and he himself overturned the gates of the enemies. A shield with a spear was not seen among the forty thousand of Israel.

8  The LORD will choose new things; then the barley bread, and a sword or a spear shall not be seen among forty thousand in Israel.

5:9  My heart is toward the governors of Israel, that offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless ye YHWH.

9  My heart inclines to the orders given in Israel; ye that are willing among the people, bless the Lord.

9  My heart loves the leaders of Israel. All you who, of your own free will, offered yourselves during a crisis, bless the Lord.

5:10  Ye that ride on white asses, ye that sit on rich cloths, and ye that walk by the way, tell of it;

10  Ye that mount a she-ass at noon-day, ye that sit on the judgement-seat, and walk by the roads of them that sit in judgement by the way; declare

10  You who ride upon donkeys laboring, and you who sit in judgment, and you who walk along the way, speak out.

5:11  Louder than the voice of archers, by the watering-troughs! there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of YHWH, even the righteous acts of His rulers in Israel. Then the people of the YHWH went down to the gates.

11  Where the chariots were struck together, and the army of the enemies was choked, in that place, let the justices of the Lord be described, and let his clemency be for the brave of Israel. Then did the people of the Lord descend to the gates, and obtain leadership.

5:12  Awake, awake, Deborah; awake, awake, utter a song; arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam.

12  Rise up, rise up, O Deborah! Rise up, rise up, and speak a canticle! Rise up, Barak, and seize your captives, O son of Abinoam.

5:13  Then made He a remnant to have dominion over the nobles and the people; YHWH made me have dominion over the mighty.

13  Then went down the remnant to the strong, the people of the Lord went down for him among the mighty ones from me.

13  The remnants of the people were saved. The Lord contended with the strong.

5:14  Out of Ephraim came they whose root is in Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy peoples; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the marshal's staff.

14  Ephraim rooted them out in Amalec, behind thee was Benjamin among thy people: the inhabitants of Machir came down with me searching out the enemy, and from Zabulon came they that draw with the scribe’s pen of record.

14  And Barak's works are known in Amalek; after you marched Benjamin with affection for you; out of Machir came forth a seer, and out of Zebulun those who write with the pen of a scribe.

5:15  And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; as was Issachar, so was Barak; into the valley they rushed forth at his feet. Among the divisions of Reuben there were great resolves of heart.

15  And princes in Issachar were with Debbora and Barac, thus she sent Barac on his feet in the valleys into the portions of Ruben; great pangs reached to the heart.

15  The commanders of Issachar were with Deborah, and they followed the steps of Barak, who endangered himself, like one rushing headlong into a chasm. Reuben was divided against himself. Contention was found among great souls.

5:16  Why sattest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear the pipings for the flocks? At the divisions of Reuben there were great searchings of heart.

16  Why do you live between two borders, so that you hear the bleating of the flocks? Reuben was divided against himself. Contention was found among great souls.

5:17  Gilead abode beyond the Jordan; and Dan, why doth he sojourn by the ships? Asher dwelt at the shore of the sea, and abideth by its bays.

17  Galaad is on the other side of Jordan where he pitched his tents; and why does Dan remain in ships? Aser sat down on the sea-coasts, and he will tabernacle at his ports.

5:18  Zebulun is a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death, and Naphtali, upon the high places of the field.

18  Yet truly, Zebulun and Naphtali offered their lives to death in the region of Merom.

5:19  The kings came, they fought; then fought the kings of Canaan, in Taanach by the waters of Megiddo; they took no gain of money.

5:20  They fought from heaven, the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.

20  The stars from heaven set themselves in array, they set themselves to fight with Sisara out of their paths.

20  The conflict against them was from heaven. The stars, remaining in their order and courses, fought against Sisera.

5:21  The brook Kishon swept them away, that ancient brook, the brook Kishon. O my soul, tread them down with strength.

21  The torrent of Kishon dragged away their carcasses, the onrushing torrent, the torrent of Kishon. O my soul, tread upon the stalwart!

21  The river Kishon and the river Karmin swept them away. O my soul, you have defeated an army!

5:22  Then did the horsehoofs stamp by reason of the prancings, the prancings of their mighty ones.

22  When the hoofs of the horse were entangled, his mighty ones earnestly hasted

22  The hoofs of the horses were broken, while the strongest of the enemies fled away with fury, and rushed on to ruin.

5:23  'Curse ye Meroz', said the angel of YHWH, 'Curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof, because they came not to the help of the YHWH, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.'

23  to curse Meroz: Curse ye it, said the angel of the Lord; cursed is every one that dwells in it, because they came not to the help of the Lord, to his help among the mighty.

23  ‘Cursed be the land of Meroz!’ said the Angel of the Lord. ‘Cursed be its inhabitants! For they did not come to the aid of the Lord, to the assistance of his most valiant men.’

5:24  Blessed above women shall Jael be, the wife of Heber the Kenite, above women in the tent shall she be blessed.

24  Blessed among women be Jael wife of Chaber the Kenite; let her be blessed above women in tents.

5:25  Water he asked, milk she gave him; in a lordly bowl she brought him curd.

25  He asked for water, she gave him milk in a dish; she brought butter of princes.

25  He begged her for water, and she gave him milk, and she offered him butter in a dish fit for princes.

5:26  Her hand she put to the tent-pin, and her right hand to the workmen's hammer; and with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote through his head, yea, she pierced and struck through his temples.

26  She put her left hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workman’s mallet. And she struck Sisera, seeking in his head a place for the wound, and strongly piercing his temples.

5:27  At her feet he sunk, he fell, he lay; at her feet he sunk, he fell; where he sunk, there he fell down dead.

27  He rolled down between her feet; he fell and lay between her feet; he bowed and fell: where he bowed, there he fell dead.

27  Between her feet, he was ruined. He fainted away and passed on. He curled up before her feet, and he lay there lifeless and miserable.

5:28  Through the window she looked forth, and peered, the mother of Sisera, through the lattice: 'Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why tarry the wheels of his chariots?

28  The mother of Sisara looked down through the window out of the loophole, saying, Why was his chariot ashamed? why did the wheels of his chariots tarry?

28  His mother gazed through a window and wailed. And she spoke from an upper room: ‘Why does his chariot delay in returning? Why are the feet of his team of horses so slow?’

5:29  The wisest of her princesses answer her, yea, she returneth answer to herself

29  Her wise ladies answered her, and she returned answers to herself, saying,

29  One who was wiser than the rest of his wives responded to her mother-in-law with this

5:30  'Are they not finding, are they not dividing the spoil? A damsel, two damsels to every man; to Sisera a spoil of dyed garments, a spoil of dyed garments of embroidery, two dyed garments of broidery for the neck of every spoiler?'

30  Will they not find him dividing the spoil? he will surely be gracious to every man: there are spoils of dyed garments for Sisara, spoils of various dyed garments, dyed embroidered garments, they are the spoils for his neck.

5:31  So perish all Thine enemies, O YHWH; but they that love Him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.

31  O Lord, so may all your enemies perish! But may those who love you shine with splendor, as the sun shines at its rising.”

6:2  And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

2  And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of Madiam seven years.

2  Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, who delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years.

6:3  And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them;

3  And the hand of Madiam prevailed against Israel: and the children of Israel made for themselves because of Madiam the caves in the mountains, and the dens, and the holes in the rocks.

6:4  and they encamped against them, and destroyed the produce of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

4  And when Israel had planted, Midian and Amalek, and the rest of the eastern nations ascended,

6:5  For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number; and they came into the land to destroy it.

5  And they encamped against them, and destroyed their fruits until they came to Gaza; and they left not the support of life in the land of Israel, not even ox or ass among the herds.

5  and pitching their tents among them, they laid waste to all that was planted, as far as the entrance to Gaza. And they left behind nothing at all to sustain life in Israel, neither sheep, nor oxen, nor donkeys.

6:6  And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried unto YHWH.

6  For they and their stock came up, and their tents were with them, as the locust in multitude, and there was no number to them and their camels; and they came to the land of Israel, and laid it waste.

6  And Israel trembled exceedingly from before the Midianites;

6:7  And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto YHWH because of Midian,

7  And Israel was greatly impoverished because of Madiam.

7  And the children of Israel cried to the LORD because of the Midianites,

6:8  that YHWH sent a prophet unto the children of Israel; and he said unto them: 'Thus saith the YHWH, the God of Israel: I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

8  And the children of Israel cried to the Lord because of Madiam.

8  And he cried out to the Lord, requesting assistance against the Midianites.

6:9  and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land.

9  And the Lord sent a prophet to the children of Israel; and he said to them, Thus says the Lord God of Israel, I am he that brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and I brought you up out of the house of your bondage.

9  And he sent to them a man who was a prophet, and he said: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘I caused you to ascend from Egypt, and I led you away from the house of servitude.

6:10  And I said unto you: I am YHWH your God; ye shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell; but ye have not hearkened unto My voice.'

10  And I delivered you out of the hand of Egypt, and out of the hand of all that afflicted you, and I cast them out before you; and I gave you their land.

10  And I freed you from the hand of the Egyptians and from all of the enemies who were afflicting you. And I cast them out at your arrival, and I delivered their land to you.

6:11  And the angel of YHWH came, and sat under the terebinth which was in Ophrah, that belonged unto Joash the Abiezrite; and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

11  And I said to you, I am the Lord your God: ye shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell; but ye hearkened not to my voice.

6:12  And the angel of YHWH appeared unto him, and said unto him: 'YHWH is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.'

12  And an angel of the Lord came, and sat down under the fir tree, which was in Ephratha in the land of Joas father of Esdri; and Gedeon his son was threshing wheat in a wine-press in order to escape from the face of Madiam.

12  Then an Angel of the Lord arrived, and he sat under an oak tree, which was at Ophrah, and which belonged to Joash, the father of the family of Ezri. And while his son Gideon was threshing and cleaning the grain at the winepress, so that he might flee from Midian,

6:13  And Gideon said unto him: 'Oh, my lord, if YHWH be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where are all His wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying: Did not the YHWH bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.'

13  And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty in strength.

13  the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and he said: “The Lord is with you, most valiant of men.”

6:14  And YHWH turned towards him, and said: 'Go in this thy might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian; have not I sent thee?'

14  And Gedeon said to him, Be gracious with me, my Lord: but if the Lord is with us, why have these evils found us? and where are all his miracles, which our fathers have related to us, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt? and now he has cast us out, and given us into the hand of Madiam.

6:15  And he said unto him: 'Oh, my lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.'

15  And the angel of the Lord turned to him, and said, Go in this thy strength, and thou shalt save Israel out of the hand of Madiam: behold, I have sent thee.

15  And the Lord looked down upon him, and he said: “Go forth with this, your strength, and you shall free Israel from the hand of Midian. Know that I have sent you.”

6:16  And YHWH said unto him: 'Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.'

16  And Gedeon said to him, Be gracious with me, my Lord: whereby shall I save Israel? behold, my thousand is weakened in Manasse, and I am the least in my father’s house.

6:17  And he said unto him: 'If now I have found favour in thy sight, then show me a sign that it is thou that talkest with me.

17  And the angel of the Lord said to him, The Lord shall be with thee, and thou shalt smite Madiam as one man.

17  And the Lord said to him: “I will be with you. And so, you shall cut down Midian as if one man.”

6:18  Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and lay it before thee.' And he said: 'I will tarry until thou come back.'

18  And Gedeon said to him, If now I have found mercy in thine eyes, and thou wilt do this day for me all that thou hast spoken of with me,

18  And he said: “If I have found grace before you, give me a sign that it is you who is speaking to me.

6:19  And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal; the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the terebinth, and presented it.

19  depart not hence until I come to thee, and I will bring forth an offering and offer it before thee: and he said, I will remain until thou return.

19  And may you not withdraw from here, until I return to you, carrying a sacrifice and offering it to you.” And he responded, “I will wait for your return.”

6:20  And the angel of God said unto him: 'Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth.' And he did so.

20  And Gedeon went in, and prepared a kid of the goats, and an ephah of fine flour unleavened; and he put the flesh in the basket, and poured the broth into the pot, and brought them forth to him under the turpentine tree, and drew nigh.

20  And so Gideon entered, and he boiled a goat, and he made unleavened bread from a measure of flour. And setting the flesh in a basket, and putting the broth of the flesh in a pot, he took it all under the oak tree, and he offered it to him.

6:21  Then the angel of YHWH put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the YHWH departed out of his sight.

21  And the angel of God said to him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and put them on that rock, and pour out the broth close by: and he did so.

6:22  And Gideon saw that he was the angel of YHWH; and Gideon said: 'Alas, O Lord GOD! forasmuch as I have seen the angel of the YHWH face to face.'

22  And the angel of the Lord stretched out the end of the rod that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened bread; and fire came up out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened bread, and the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight.

22  And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O LORD God! for I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face.

6:23  And YHWH said unto him: 'Peace be unto thee; fear not; thou shalt not die.'

23  And Gedeon saw that he was an angel of the Lord; and Gedeon said, Ah, ah, Lord my God! for I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.

6:24  Then Gideon built an altar there unto YHWH, and called it 'Adonai-shalom'; unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

24  And the Lord said to him, Peace be to thee, fear not, thou shalt not die.

6:25  And it came to pass the same night, that YHWH said unto him: 'Take thy father's bullock, and the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the Asherah that is by it;

25  And Gedeon built there an altar to the Lord, and called it The peace of the Lord, until this day, as it is still in Ephratha of the father of Esdri.

25  Therefore, Gideon built an altar to the Lord there, and he called it, the Peace of the Lord, even to the present day. And while he was still at Ophrah, which is of the family of Ezri,

6:26  and build an altar unto YHWH thy God upon the top of this stronghold, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt-offering with the wood of the Asherah which thou shalt cut down.'

26  And it came to pass in that night, that the Lord said to him, Take the young bullock which thy father has, even the second bullock of seven years old, and thou shalt destroy the altar of Baal which thy father has, and the grove which is by it thou shalt destroy.

26  that night, the Lord said to him: “Take a bull of your father’s, and another bull of seven years, and you shall destroy the altar of Baal, which is your father’s. And you shall cut down the sacred grove which is around the altar.

6:27  Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as YHWH had spoken unto him; and it came to pass, because he feared his father's household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

27  And thou shalt build an altar to the Lord thy God on the top of this Maozi in the ordering it, and thou shalt take the second bullock, and shalt offer up whole-burnt-offerings with the wood of the grove, which thou shalt destroy.

27  And you shall build an altar to the Lord your God, at the summit of this rock, on which you placed the sacrifice before. And you shall take the second bull, and you shall offer a holocaust upon a pile of the wood, which you shall cut down from the grove.”

6:28  And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

28  And Gedeon took ten men of his servants, and did as the Lord spoke to him: and it came to pass, as he feared the house of his father and the men of the city if he should do it by day, that he did it by night.

28  Therefore, Gideon, taking ten men from his servants, did just as the Lord had instructed him. But fearing his father’s household, and the men of that city, he was not willing to do it by day. Instead, he completed everything by night.

6:29  And they said one to another: 'Who hath done this thing?' And when they inquired and asked, they said: 'Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.'

29  And the men of the city rose up early in the morning; and behold, the altar of Baal had been demolished, and the grove by it had been destroyed; and they saw the second bullock, which Gedeon offered on the altar that had been built.

29  And when the men of that town had risen up in the morning, they saw the altar of Baal destroyed, and the sacred grove cut down, and the second bull set upon the altar, which then had been built.

6:30  Then the men of the city said unto Joash: 'Bring out thy son, that he may die; because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the Asherah that was by it.'

30  And a man said to his neighbour, Who has done this thing? and they enquired and searched, and learnt that Gedeon the son of Joas had done this thing.

30  And they said one to another, “Who has done this?” And when they inquired everywhere as to the author of the deed, it was said, “Gideon, the son of Joash, did all these things.”

6:31  And Joash said unto all that stood against him: 'Will ye contend for Baal? or will ye save him? he that will contend for him, shall be put to death before morning; if he be a god, let him contend for himself, because one hath broken down his altar.'

31  And the men of the city said to Joas, Bring out thy son, and let him die, because he has destroyed the altar of Baal, and because he has destroyed the grove that is by it.

31  And they said to Joash: “Bring forward your son here, so that he may die. For he has destroyed the altar of Baal, and he has cut down the sacred grove.”

6:32  Therefore on that day he was called Jerubbaal, saying: 'Let Baal contend against him, because he hath broken down his altar.'

32  And Gedeon the son of Joas said to all the men who rose up against him, Do ye now plead for Baal, or will ye save him? whoever will plead for him, let him be slain this morning: if he be a god let him plead for himself, because one has thrown down his altar.

32  But he responded to them: “Could you be the avengers of Baal, so that you fight on his behalf? Whoever is his adversary, let him die before the light arrives tomorrow; if he is a god, let him vindicate himself against him who has overturned his altar.”

6:33  Now all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.

33  And he called it in that day Jerobaal, saying, Let Baal plead thereby, because his altar has been thrown down.

6:34  But the spirit of YHWH clothed Gideon; and he blew a horn; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

34  And all Madiam, and Amalek, and the sons of the east gathered themselves together, and encamped in the valley of Jezrael.

34  And so, all of Midian, and Amalek, and the eastern peoples were gathered together. And crossing the Jordan, they encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

6:35  And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him; and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

35  And the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gedeon, and he blew with the horn, and Abiezer came to help after him.

35  But the Spirit of the Lord entered Gideon, who, sounding the trumpet, summoned the house of Abiezer so that he might follow him.

6:36  And Gideon said unto God: 'If Thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken,

36  And Gedeon sent messengers into all Manasse, and into Aser, and into Zabulon, and into Nephthali; and he went up to meet them.

36  And he sent messengers into all of Manasseh, who also followed him, and other messengers into Asher, and Zebulun, and Naphtali, who went to meet him.

6:37  behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing-floor; if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the ground, then shall I know that Thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken.'

37  And Gedeon said to God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said,

6:38  And it was so; for he rose up early on the morrow, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water.

38  behold, I put the fleece of wool in the threshing-floor: if there be dew on the fleece only, and drought on all the ground, I shall know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said.

38  I will set this wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there will be dew only on the fleece, and all the ground is dry, I will know that by my hand, as you have said, you will free Israel.”

6:39  And Gideon said unto God: 'Let not Thine anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once: let me make trial, I pray Thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.'

39  And it was so: and he rose up early in the morning, and wrung the fleece, and dew dropped from the fleece, a bowl full of water.

39  And so it was done. And rising in the night, wringing out the fleece, he filled a vessel with the dew.

6:40  And God did so that night; for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

40  And Gedeon said to God, Let not, I pray thee, thine anger be kindled with me, and I will speak yet once; I will even yet make one trial more with the fleece: let now the drought be upon the fleece only, and let there be dew on all the ground.

40  And again he said to God: “Let not your fury be enkindled against me, if I test once more, seeking a sign in the fleece. I pray that only the fleece may be dry, and all the ground may be wet with dew.”
