After saying these things, Jesus went out with His disciples across the winter stream Kidron, where there[ was] a garden, into which He and His disciples entered.

When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples.

JESUS said these things and went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, to a place where there was a garden, where he and his disciples entered.

Textual Criticism

21:25 Inauthentic Addition? For some time, after Tischendorff, it was thought that verse 25 was not original and ought to be ignored:

  • Indeed:  the scribe of Codex Sinaiticus omits verse 25, and adds it subsequently;
  • The opinion of only one ancient author (Theodor of Mospsuesta) could back this theory.

Yet, as early as 1938 Bell and Skeat demonstrated that the correction and addition of verse 25 was performed by the same scribe as the verse 24 and was better construed as the correction of a mistake, than the witness to another textual tradition (See Neville Birdsall J.,"The Source of Catena Comments on John 21:25" NT 36/3 (1994), 271-279).
