The Bible in Its Traditions

John 20:0; 5:1–10:42

Byz Nes V S TR

After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Byz Nes TR

S

Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep [Gate] a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.

Now at Jerusalem is the Pool of Evidence, which in Hebrew is known as the Place of Mercy; it has five porticos.

Now there was at Jerusalem a baptismal pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five entrances.

Byz Nes TR V
S

In these [porches] were lying a great multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water.

And at these entrances a great many sick people were lying, the blind, the lame, and the crippled; and they were waiting for the water to be stirred up;

Byz S TR
Nes TR V

For an angel from time to[ ]time descended into the pool and stirred up the water; therefore the first [one] having gone in after the stirring up of the water, became well of whatever disease he was suffering.

[for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the waters stepped in was made whole, with whatsoever disease he was holden.]

Byz
Nes TR V
S

Now there was a certain man there who had an ailment [for ]thirty-eight years.

And a certain man was there, who had been thirty and eight years in his infirmity.

A man was there who had been sick for thirty-eight years.

Byz Nes S TR
V

When Jesus saw this [man] lying there, and knew that he already had been in [that condition] a long time, He said to him, "Do you wish to become well?"

Then, when Jesus had seen him reclining, and when he realized that he had been afflicted for a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?”

Byz Nes S
V
TR

The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I do not have a man, so that whenever the water is stirred up, he may put me into the pool; but while I am coming, another descends before me."

The invalid answered him: “Lord, I do not have any man to put me in the pool, when the water has been stirred. For as I am going, another descends ahead of me.”

The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

Byz Nes V S TR

Jesus said to him, "Arise, take up your bed and walk."

Byz V S TR
Nes

And immediately the man became well, and took up his bed, and began to walk. And that day was the Sabbath.

And straightway the man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked. Now it was the sabbath on that day.

Byz TR
Nes S
V

10  Therefore the Jews said to the man who was healed, "It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed."

10  So the Jews said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed.

10  Therefore, the Jews said to the one who had been healed: “It is the Sabbath. It is not lawful for you to take up your stretcher.”

Byz V S TR
Nes

11  He answered them, "He that made me whole, He said to me, 'Take up your bed and walk.' "

11  But he answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

Byz S
Nes TR
V

12  Then they asked him, "Who is the Man who said to you, 'Take up your bed and walk'?"

12  They asked him, Who is the man that said unto thee, Take up [thy bed], and walk?

12  Therefore, they questioned him, “Who is that man, who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk?’ ”

Byz Nes TR V S
TR

13  But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had turned aside, while a crowd was in that place.

13  And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

Byz
Nes V TR
S

14  After these things Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you have become well. Sin no more, lest something worse may happen to you."

14  Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing befall thee.

14  After a while, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, Behold, you are healed; do not sin again, for something worse might happen to you than the first.

Byz Nes V
S
TR

15  The man went away and reported to the Jews that Jesus was the [One ]who had made him well.

15  And the man went away and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had healed him.

15  The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

Byz S TR
Nes S V

16  And on account of this the Jews began to persecute Jesus, and were seeking to kill Him, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.

16  And for this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath.

Byz Nes V TR
S

17  But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I am working."

17  But Jesus said to them, My Father works even until now, so I also work.

Byz Nes TR V S
TR

18  Because of this the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but also He called God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

18  Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

Byz TR Nes V S

19  Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father doing; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.

Byz Nes V S TR

20  For the Father loves the Son, and shows to Him all things which He Himself does; and greater works than these He will show Him, so that you may marvel.

21  For as the Father raises up the dead and gives life, thus also the Son gives life to whom He wills.

Byz V S TR

22  For the Father judges no one, but He has given all judgment to the Son,

22  For neither doth the Father judge any man, but he hath given all judgment unto the Son;

24  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath eternal life, and cometh not into judgment, but hath passed out of death into life.

Byz V

25  Most assuredly I say to you, that an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those having heard shall live.

25  Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live.

Byz Nes V TR

26  For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,

28  Marvel not at this: for the hour cometh, in which all that are in the tombs shall hear his voice,

29  And they will come out; those who have done good works to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil works to the resurrection of judgment.

Byz Nes S TR

30  I can of My own self do nothing. Even as I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

30  I am not able to do anything of myself. As I hear, so do I judge. And my judgment is just. For I do not seek my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
