1  The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham

2  Abraham fathered Isaac, Isaac fathered Jacob, and Jacob fathered Judah and his brothers.

2  Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judah and his brethren;

2  Abraham conceived Isaac. And Isaac conceived Jacob. And Jacob conceived Judah and his brothers.

3  Judah fathered Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez fathered Hezron, and Hezron fathered Ram.

3  and Judah begat Perez and Zerah of Tamar; and Perez begat Hezron; and Hezron begat Ram;

3  And Judah conceived Perez and Zerah by Tamar. And Perez conceived Hezron. And Hezron conceived Ram.

4  Ram fathered Amminadab, Amminadab fathered Nahshon, and Nahshon fathered Salmon.

4  and Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon; and Nahshon begat Salmon;

4  And Ram conceived Amminadab. And Amminadab conceived Nahshon. And Nahshon conceived Salmon.

5  Salmon fathered Boaz by Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed by Ruth, Obed fathered Jesse,

5  and Salmon begat Boaz of Rahab; and Boaz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

5  Salmon begot Boaz of his wife Rahab; Boaz begot Obed of his wife Ruth; Obed begot Jesse;

6  and Jesse fathered David the king. David the king fathered Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah.

6  Jesse begot David the king; David the king begot Solomon of the wife of Uriah;

7  Solomon fathered Rehoboam, Rehoboam fathered Abijah, and Abijah fathered Asa.

7  and Solomon begat Rehoboam; and Rehoboam begat Abijah; and Abijah begat Asa;

7  And Solomon conceived Rehoboam. And Rehoboam conceived Abijah. And Abijah conceived Asa.

8  Asa fathered Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat fathered Joram, and Joram fathered Uzziah.

8  And Asa conceived Jehoshaphat. And Jehoshaphat conceived Joram. And Joram conceived Uzziah.

9  Uzziah fathered Jotham, Jotham fathered Ahaz, and Ahaz fathered Hezekiah.

9  And Uzziah conceived Jotham. And Jotham conceived Ahaz. And Ahaz conceived Hezekiah.

9  And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;

10  Hezekiah fathered Manasseh, Manasseh fathered Amon, and Amon fathered Josiah.

11  Josiah fathered Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the captivity in Babylon.

11  and Josiah begat Jechoniah and his brethren, at the time of the carrying away to Babylon.

12  And after the captivity in Babylon, Jeconiah fathered Shealtiel, and Shealtiel fathered Zerubbabel.

12  And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;

13  Zerubbabel fathered Abiud, Abiud fathered Eliakim, and Eliakim fathered Azor.

13  and Zerubbabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;

14  Azor fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered Achim, and Achim fathered Eliud.

14  and Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;

14  And Azor conceived Zadok. And Zadok conceived Achim. And Achim conceived Eliud.

15  Eliud fathered Eleazar, Eleazar fathered Matthan, and Matthan fathered Jacob.

15  and Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;

15  And Eliud conceived Eleazar. And Eleazar conceived Matthan. And Matthan conceived Jacob.

16  And Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.

17  So all the generations from Abraham till David [were] fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon [were] fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ [were] fourteen generations.

17  And so, all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the transmigration of Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the transmigration of Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations.

17  Therefore all the generations, from Abraham down to David, are fourteen generations; and from David down to the Babylonian captivity, fourteen generations; and from the Babylonian captivity down to Christ, fourteen generations.

18  Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this: After His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.

18  Now the procreation of the Christ occurred in this way. After his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they lived together, she was found to have conceived in her womb by the Holy Spirit.

18  The birth of Jesus Christ was in this manner. While Mary his mother was acquired for a price for Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.

19  Then Joseph her husband, being righteous and not wanting to make her a public example, purposed to put her away secretly.

19  And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.

20  But while he was thinking about these things, behold, an angel of YHWH appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take unto [you] Mary your wife, for that which is begotten in her is of the Holy Spirit.

20  While he was considering this, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, and said to him, O, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take your wife Mary, because he that is to be born of her is of the Holy Spirit.

20  But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

21  And she shall bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He shall save His people from their sins."

21  And she shall give birth to a son. And you shall call his name JESUS. For he shall accomplish the salvation of his people from their sins.”

21  She will give birth to a son, and you will call his name Jesus; for he shall save his people from their sins.

22  Now all this came to pass that the thing spoken by YHWH through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying,

22  Now all this occurred in order to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying

22  All this happened, that what was spoken from the Lord by the prophet might be fulfilled,

23  "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,"which is translated, "God with us."

23  “Behold, a virgin shall conceive in her womb, and she shall give birth to a son. And they shall call his name Emmanuel, which means: God is with us.”

23  Behold, a virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel, which is interpreted, Our God is with us.

24  Then Joseph, having been aroused from sleep, did as the angel of YHWH had ordered him and took to [him] his wife,

24  And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took unto him his wife;

25  but did not know her till she brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.

25  And he knew her not, yet she bore her son, the firstborn. And he called his name JESUS.

2:1  Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East arrived in Jerusalem,

1  WHEN Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judah, in the days of Herod the king, there came Magi from the East to Jerusalem.

2:2  saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East, and have come to worship Him."

2  Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we saw his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

2  And they were saying, Where is the King of the Jews, who has been born? For we have seen his star in the East, so we have come to worship him.

2:3  But when Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

3  Now king Herod, hearing this, was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

3  When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

2:4  And having gathered together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired from them where the Christ would be born.

2:5  So they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet

5  And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written through the prophet,

2:6  'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you shall come forth a Ruler who will shepherd My people Israel.' "

6  And thou Bethlehem, land of Judah, Art in no wise least among the princes of Judah: For out of thee shall come forth a governor, Who shall be shepherd of my people Israel.

6  Even you, Bethlehem of Judah, you are not insignificant in the eyes of the kings of Judah, for from you shall come out a king, who will shepherd my people Israel.

2:7  Then Herod, secretly having called the wise men, ascertained from them the time that the star appeared.

7  Then Herod privily called the Wise-men, and learned of them exactly what time the star appeared.

2:8  And having sent them to Bethlehem, he said, "Go and carefully search for the young Child, and as soon as you find [Him], report back to me, so that I also may come and worship Him."

8  And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search out exactly concerning the young child; and when ye have found [him,] bring me word, that I also may come and worship him.

8  And sending them into Bethlehem, he said: “Go and diligently ask questions about the boy. And when you have found him, report back to me, so that I, too, may come and adore him.”

2:9  When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.

9  And when they had heard the king, they went away. And behold, the star that they had seen in the east went before them, even until, arriving, it stood still above the place where the child was.

9  When they had heard from the king, they went away; and behold, the same star that they had seen in the east was going before them, until it came and stood just above the place where the infant boy was.

2:10  And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.

2:11  And having come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and falling down, they worshipped Him, and opening their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

11  And they entered the house, and they saw the infant boy with Mary, his mother; and they threw themselves down and worshipped him; and they opened their treasures and offered to him gifts - gold and frankincense, and myrrh.

2:12  And having been divinely instructed in a dream not to return to Herod, they withdrew into their own country by another way.

12  And they saw in a dream not to return to Herod, so they departed to their own country by another way.

2:13  Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of YHWH appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise, and take along the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you; for Herod is about to seek the young Child to destroy Him."

13  And after they had gone away, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph, saying: “Rise up, and take the boy and his mother, and flee into Egypt. And remain there until I tell you. For it will happen that Herod will seek the boy to destroy him.”

13  When they had gone, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, and said to him, Arise, take the infant boy and his mother, and escape to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod is ready to demand the child so as to destroy him.

2:14  When he arose, he took along the young Child and His mother by night and withdrew into Egypt,

14  And getting up, he took the boy and his mother by night, and withdrew into Egypt.

14  Then Joseph rose up, took the infant boy and his mother in the night, and escaped to Egypt.

2:15  and was there until the death of Herod, so that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by YHWH through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called My Son."

15  And he remained there, until the death of Herod, in order to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Out of Egypt, I called my son.”

2:16  Then Herod, seeing that he had been deceived by the wise men, was greatly enraged; and he sent and executed all the boys in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the wise men.

16  Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the Wise-men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had exactly learned of the Wise-men.

16  When Herod saw that he was insulted by the Magi, he was greatly enraged, so he sent forth and had all the infant boys in Bethlehem and in its suburbs killed, from two years old and down, according to the time that he had enquired from the Magi.

2:17  Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying

17  Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled, saying

2:18  "A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."

18  “A voice has been heard in Ramah, great weeping and wailing: Rachel crying for her sons. And she was not willing to be consoled, because they were no more.”

18  A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and wailing exceedingly, Rachel weeping for her sons, and she would not be comforted, because they could not be brought back.

2:19  Now after Herod died, behold, an angel of YHWH appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

19  Then, when Herod had passed away, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph in Egypt,

2:20  saying, "Arise, and take with [you] the young Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the life of the young Child have died."

20  Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead that sought the young child`s life.

20  And he said to him, Arise, take the boy and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the boyÆs life are dead.

2:21  Then he rose and took along the young Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.

21  And rising up, he took the boy and his mother, and he went into the land of Israel.

2:22  But hearing that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being divinely instructed in a dream, he withdrew into the regions of Galilee.

22  But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither; and being warned [of God] in a dream, he withdrew into the parts of Galilee,

22  Then, hearing that Archelaus reigned in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned in sleep, he withdrew into parts of Galilee.

2:23  And when he arrived, he settled down in a city called Nazareth, so that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, "He would be called a Nazarene."

3:1  In those days John the Baptist arrived preaching in the wilderness of Judea,

1  And in those days cometh John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, saying,

1  Now in those days, John the Baptist arrived, preaching in the desert of Judea,

3:2  and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"

2  Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

2  Saying, Repent; for the kingdom of heaven is near.

3:3  For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: "A voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of YHWH; make His paths straight.' "

3  For this is he that was spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.

3  For it was he of whom it was said by the prophet Isaiah, The voice which cries in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, and straighten his highways.

3:4  And John himself had his clothing [made] from camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.

4  Now the same John had a garment made from the hair of camels, and a leather belt around his waist. And his food was locusts and wild honey.

4  And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

3:5  Then Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan were going out to him

5  Then there went out to him, Jerusalem and all of Judaea, and the whole country around Jordan.

5  Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

3:6  and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

6  And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

3:7  But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

7  Then, seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees arriving for his baptism, he said to them: “Progeny of vipers, who warned to you to flee from the approaching wrath?

7  But when he saw a great many of the Pharisees and Sadducees who were coming to be baptized, he said to them, O offspring of scorpions, who has warned you to escape from the anger which is to come?

3:8  Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance,

8  Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance

3:9  and do not think to say among yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham out of these stones.

9  and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

9  And do not choose to say within yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones.

3:10  But even now, the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

10  For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.

3:11  I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with [the] Holy Spirit,

11  Indeed, I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who will come after me is more powerful than me. I am not worthy to carry his shoes. He will baptize you with the fire of the Holy Spirit.

11  I am just baptizing you with water for repentance; but he who is coming after me is greater than I, the one even whose shoes I am not worthy to remove; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

3:12  whose winnowing shovel is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His threshing floor, and He will gather His wheat into the barn; but the chaff He will burn up with unquenchable fire."

12  Whose shovel is in his hand, and he purifies his threshings; the wheat he gathers into his barns, and the straw he burns up in the unquenchable fire.

3:13  Then Jesus arrived from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him.

13  Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

3:14  But John [tried to ]prevent Him, saying, "I have need to be baptized by You, and You are coming to me?"

14  But John refused him, saying, “I ought to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?”

3:15  But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness."Then he permitted Him.

15  But Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer [it] now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffereth him.

15  And responding, Jesus said to him: “Permit this for now. For in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all justice.” Then he allowed him.

3:16  And having been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him.

16  And Jesus when he was baptized, went up straightway from the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him;

16  When Jesus was baptized, he immediately came out of the water; and the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and coming upon him;

3:17  And behold, a voice came out of the heavens, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I have found delight."

17  and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
