The Bible in Its Traditions

1 Corinthians 12:0; 12:1–30:24

Byz Nes V S TR

Now concerning spiritual [gifts], brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.

Byz V
Nes TR
S

You know that when you were pagans, how you were led, being carried away to these speechless idols.

Ye know that when ye were Gentiles [ye were] led away unto those dumb idols, howsoever ye might led.

That once you were pagans, and without exception you were carried away by dumb idols.

Byz S TR
Nes TR

Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says "Jesus be cursed,"and no one can say that Jesus [is] Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

Wherefore I make known unto you, that no man speaking in the Spirit of God saith, Jesus is anathema; and no man can say, Jesus is Lord, but in the Holy Spirit.

Because of this, I would have you know that no one speaking in the Spirit of God utters a curse against Jesus. And no one is able to say that Jesus is Lord, except in the Holy Spirit.

Byz Nes S TR

Now there are varieties of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit.

Truly, there are diverse graces, but the same Spirit.

Byz Nes V S TR

And there are varieties of ministries, but the same Lord.

Byz Nes S TR

And there are varieties of activities, but the same God works all in all.

And there are diverse works, but the same God, who works everything in everyone.

Byz Nes

S TR

But to each [one] the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the profit [of all.]

However, the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one toward what is beneficial.

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man as help to him.

Byz Nes S TR

For to one is given a word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another a word of knowledge according to the same Spirit,

Certainly, to one, through the Spirit, is given words of wisdom; but to another, according to the same Spirit, words of knowledge;

Byz S
Nes V TR

and to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,

to another faith, in the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, in the one Spirit;

Byz Nes S TR
V

10  to another the working of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another discerning of spirits, and to another [different] kinds of tongues, and to another interpretation of tongues.

10  to another, miraculous works; to another, prophecy; to another, the discernment of spirits; to another, different kinds of languages; to another, the interpretation of words.

Byz V
Nes S TR

11  But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

11  but all these worketh the one and the same Spirit, dividing to each one severally even as he will.

12  For just as the body is one and has many parts, but all the parts of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.

12  For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.

Byz Nes TR
V
S

13  For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body-whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free-and we were all given to drink into one Spirit.

13  And indeed, in one Spirit, we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether servant or free. And we all drank in the one Spirit.

13  For all of us are baptized by one Spirit into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether bond or free; and we have all received through the one Spirit.

Byz V
Nes S TR

14  For in fact the body is not one part but many.

14  For the body is not one member, but many.

Byz Nes V TR
S

15  If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,"is it therefore not of the body?

15  For if the foot should say, Because I am not the hand, I am not a part of the body; is it therefore not a member of the body?

Byz Nes V S TR

16  And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,"is it therefore not of the body?

17  If the whole body [were] an eye, where [would be] the hearing? If the whole [were] hearing, where [would be] the smelling?

Byz S
Nes TR
V

18  But now God has set the parts, each one of them, in the body just as He desired.

18  But now hath God set the members each one of them in the body, even as it pleased him.

18  But instead, God has placed the parts, each one of them, in the body, just as it has pleased him.

Byz V
Nes TR S

19  And if all [parts ]were one part, where [would be] the body?

19  And if they were all one member, where were the body?

Byz Nes S TR
V

20  But now indeed there[ are] many parts, but one body.

20  But instead, there are many parts, indeed, yet one body.

Byz Nes V S TR

21  And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you."

Byz S
Nes TR
V

22  But to a greater degree the parts of the body which seem weaker are necessary.

22  Nay, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary

22  In fact, so much more necessary are those parts of the body which seem to be weaker.

Byz Nes TR S
V TR

23  And [the parts] of the body which we consider to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater propriety.

23  And though we consider certain parts of the body to be less noble, we surround these with more abundant dignity, and so, those parts which are less presentable end up with more abundant respect.

Byz
Nes TR V
S TR

24  But our presentable [parts] have no need. But God united the body, giving greater honor to the [part] being inferior,

24  whereas our comely [parts] have no need: but God tempered the body together, giving more abundant honor to that [part] which lacked;

24  For our comely parts have no need for attention: But God has so tempered the body together, and has given greater honor to the member which is inferior

Byz
Nes S TR
V

25  lest there be divisions in the body, but the parts care the same for one another.

25  that there should be no schism in the body; but [that] the members should have the same care one for another.

25  so that there might be no schism in the body, but instead the parts themselves might take care of one another.

Byz V
Nes TR S

26  And if one part suffers, all the parts suffer together; or if one part is honored, all the parts rejoice together.

26  And whether one member suffereth, all the members suffer with it; or [one] member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

Byz V S TR

27  Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

27  Now ye are the body of Christ, and severally members thereof.

Byz Nes TR

28  And [those] whom God has appointed in the church [are]: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, kinds of tongues.

28  And indeed, God has established a certain order in the Church: first Apostles, second Prophets, third Teachers, next miracle-workers, and then the grace of healing, of helping others, of governing, of different kinds of languages, and of the interpretation of words.

28  For God has set in his church, first apostles; after them, prophets; then teachers, then performers of miracles, then those who have the gift of healing, helpers, leaders, and speakers in diverse languages.

Byz
Nes V S TR

29  All [are] not apostles, [are they]? All [are] not prophets, [are they]? Are all teachers? [Are] all [workers of] miracles?

29  Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all [workers of] miracles?

Byz Nes S TR

30  Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

30  Are all workers of miracles? Do all have the grace of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?

Byz Nes TR

31  But strive for the better gifts. And yet I make known a more excellent way.

31  But be zealous for the better charisms. And I reveal to you a yet more excellent way.

31  But if you are searching for the greater gifts, I will show you a more excellent way.

13:1  Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become [as] sounding brass or a clashing cymbal.

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am become sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal.

If I were to speak in the language of men, or of Angels, yet not have charity, I would be like a clanging bell or a crashing cymbal.

Byz Nes S TR

13:2  And though I have [the gift of] prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

And if I have prophecy, and learn every mystery, and obtain all knowledge, and possess all faith, so that I could move mountains, yet not have charity, then I am nothing.

Byz S TR

13:3  And though I give away all my possessions to feed [the poor], and though I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

And if I bestow all my goods to feed [the poor], and if I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profiteth me nothing.

And if I distribute all my goods in order to feed the poor, and if I hand over my body to be burned, yet not have charity, it offers me nothing.

Byz S

13:4  Love is patient, love is kind; love does not envy; love does not boast, is not arrogant;

Love suffereth long, [and] is kind; love envieth not; love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

Charity is patient, is kind. Charity does not envy, does not act wrongly, is not inflated.

13:5  does not behave disgracefully, does not seek its own, is not provoked to anger, thinks no evil;

doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not its own, is not provoked, taketh not account of evil;

Charity is not ambitious, does not seek for itself, is not provoked to anger, devises no evil.

Byz

13:6  does not rejoice over unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;

rejoiceth not in unrighteousness, but rejoiceth with the truth;

Charity does not rejoice over iniquity, but rejoices in truth.

Byz S

13:7  bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Charity suffers all, believes all, hopes all, endures all.

Byz Nes S

13:8  Love never fails. But whether there [are] prophecies, they shall pass away; whether there[ are] tongues, they shall cease; whether there[ is] knowledge, it shall pass away.

Charity is never torn away, even if prophecies pass away, or languages cease, or knowledge is destroyed.

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

Byz Nes S TR

13:9  Now we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part.

13:10  But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is partial shall pass away.

10  But when the perfect arrives, the imperfect passes away.

Byz Nes V S TR

13:11  When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I thought as a child, I reasoned as a child; but when I became a man, I put away the things of the child.

Byz Nes S TR

13:12  For now we see through a mirror by reflection, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.

12  Now we see through a glass darkly. But then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know, even as I am known.

13:13  And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

13  But for now, these three continue: faith, hope, and charity. And the greatest of these is charity.

Byz

14:1  Pursue love, and desire the spiritual [gifts], but especially that you may prophesy.

Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual [gifts], but rather that ye may prophesy.

Pursue charity. Be zealous for spiritual things, but only so that you may prophesy.

14:2  For he who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men, but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

For whoever speaks in tongues, speaks not to men, but to God. For no one understands. Yet by the Spirit, he speaks mysteries.

14:3  But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort.

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhortation, and consolation.

But whoever prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.

14:4  He who speaks in an [unknown] tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

Whoever speaks in tongues edifies himself. But whoever prophesies edifies the Church.

Byz V
Nes TR

14:5  Now I wish you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you should prophesy; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

I would that you all spoke various tongues, but I would rather that you prophesied: for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks various tongues, unless he interpret; however, if he interpret it, he edifies the church.

Byz Nes V

14:6  But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either in a revelation, or in knowledge, or in a prophesy, or in doctrine?

Now, my brethren, if I should come to you and speak in diverse tongues, what would I profit you, except I speak to you either by means of revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying or by teaching?

Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

Byz S

14:7  Likewise the lifeless things, when they make a sound, whether flute or harp, unless they make a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is being played on the flute, or what is being played on the harp?

Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they give not a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

Even those things that are without a soul can make sounds, whether it is a wind or a stringed instrument. But unless they present a distinction within the sounds, how will it be known which is from the pipe and which is from the string?

Byz Nes S TR
V

14:8  For if the trumpet gives an indistinct sound, who will prepare for battle?

For example, if the trumpet made an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for battle?

Byz Nes TR

14:9  So also you, [if you] do not give a clear word by the tongue, how will it be known what is being spoken? For you will be speaking into the air.

So it is with you also, for unless you utter with the tongue in plain speech, how will it be known what is said? For then you would be speaking into the air.

Even so you, except you utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what you say? you shall speak as into the air.

Byz Nes TR

14:10  There are, perhaps, so many kinds of sounds in the world, and none of them without meaning.

10  Consider that there are so many different kinds of languages in this world, and yet none is without a voice.

10  For, behold, there are many kinds of speech in the world, yet none of them are without expression.

Byz V
Nes TR

14:11  Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the sound, I shall be as a foreigner to the [one ]speaking, and the [one] speaking [shall be] as a foreigner to me.

11  If then I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian unto me.

11  So if I do not understand the utterance, I shall be as a barbarian to the speaker, and the speaker shall be as a barbarian to me.

Byz Nes S

14:12  So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual [gifts], seek that you may abound to the edification of the church.

12  So it is with you also. And since you are zealous for what is spiritual, seek the edification of the Church, so that you may abound.

12  Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

Byz Nes TR

14:13  Therefore let he that speaks in an [unknown] tongue pray that he may interpret.

13  For this reason, too, whoever speaks in tongues, let him pray for the interpretation.

13  Thus he who speaks in an unknown tongue, pray that he may interpret it.

Byz Nes S TR

14:14  For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

14  So, if I pray in tongues, my spirit prays, but my mind is without fruit.

Byz Nes TR

14:15  What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the mind. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the mind.

15  What is next? I should pray with the spirit, and also pray with the mind. I should sing psalms with the spirit, and also recite psalms with the mind.

15  What then shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, and I will pray with my understanding also: I will sing with my spirit, and I will sing with my understanding also.

Byz S V

14:16  Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say "Amen"when you give thanks, since he does not know what you are saying?

16  Else if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that filleth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he knoweth not what thou sayest?

Byz Nes TR
V
S

14:17  For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.

17  In this case, certainly, you give thanks well, but the other person is not edified.

17  For indeed you bless well, but your fellow man is not enlightened.

Byz Nes V S TR

14:18  I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;

14:19  but in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, in order that I may instruct others, rather than ten thousand words in an [unknown] tongue.

19  howbeit in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

19  But in the Church, I prefer to speak five words from my mind, so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in tongues.

14:20  Brothers, do not be children in your understanding; rather, in malice be children, but in understanding be men.

20  Brethren, be not children in mind: yet in malice be ye babes, but in mind be men.

20  My brethren, be not like infants in your intelligence, only to evil things be like children, but in your understanding be mature.

Byz Nes S TR

14:21  In the law it is written: "With men of other tongues and by strange lips I will speak to this people; and yet not even in this way will they hear Me,"says YHWH.

21  It is written in the law: “I will speak to this people with other tongues and other lips, and even so, they will not heed me, says the Lord.”

Byz Nes TR V S

14:22  So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.

Byz TR

14:23  If then the whole church comes together at the same place, and all speak in tongues, and there come in [those that are] unlearned or unbelievers, will they not say that you are mad?

23  If therefore the whole church be assembled together and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad?

23  If then, the entire Church were to gather together as one, and if all were to speak in tongues, and then ignorant or unbelieving persons were to enter, would they not say that you were insane?

Byz Nes S TR

14:24  But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an unlearned person comes in, he is reproved by all, he is discerned by all.

24  But if everyone prophesies, and one who is ignorant or unbelieving enters, he may be convinced by it all, because he understands it all.

Byz Nes V TR

14:26  What is it then, brothers? Whenever you come together, each of you has a song, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.

26  Therefore I say to you, my brethren, when you gather together, whoever among you has a psalm to sing, has a doctrine, has a revelation, has the gift of tongues, or the gift of interpretation, let everything be done for edification.

14:27  If anyone speaks in an [unknown] tongue, [let it be ]by two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.

27  And if any man should speak in an unknown tongue, let two or at most three speak, and speak one by one; and let one interpret.

14:28  But if there is no interpreter, let him be silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God.
