Deuteronomy 18:0; 9:1–29

Hear, O Israel: thou art to pass over the Jordan this day, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fortified up to heaven,

“Listen, O Israel: You shall cross over the Jordan today, in order to possess nations, very great and stronger than yourself, cities vast and walled even to the sky,

a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say: 'Who can stand before the sons of Anak?'

Know therefore this day, that YHWH thy God is He who goeth over before thee as a devouring fire; He will destroy them, and He will bring them down before thee; so shalt thou drive them out, and make them to perish quickly, as the YHWH hath spoken unto thee.

And thou shalt know to-day, that the Lord thy God he shall go before thy face: he is a consuming fire; he shall destroy them, and he shall turn them back before thee, and shall destroy them quickly, as the Lord said to thee.

Therefore, you shall know today that the Lord your God himself will pass over before you, like a devouring and consuming fire, to crush and to wipe away and to utterly ruin them before your face, quickly, just as he has spoken to you.

Speak not thou in thy heart, after that YHWH thy God hath thrust them out from before thee, saying: 'For my righteousness the YHWH hath brought me in to possess this land'; whereas for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee.

Speak not in thine heart, when the Lord thy God has destroyed these nations before thy face, saying, For my righteousness the Lord brought me in to inherit this good land.

You should not say in your heart, when the Lord your God will have destroyed them in your sight: ‘It is because of my justice that the Lord led me in, so that I might possess this land, while these nations have been destroyed because of their impiety.’

M G Sam

Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thy heart, dost thou go in to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations YHWH thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that He may establish the word which the YHWH swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

For it is not because of your justices or the uprightness of your heart that you will enter, so that you may possess their lands. Instead, it is because they have acted wickedly that they are destroyed upon your arrival, and so that the Lord may accomplish his word, which he promised under oath to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

It is not because of your righteousness, or for the uprightness of your heart, that you are going in to possess their land; but it is because of the sins of these nations the LORD your God is destroying them from before you, and that he may perform the word which he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Know therefore that it is not for thy righteousness that YHWH thy God giveth thee this good land to possess it; for thou art a stiffnecked people.

Therefore, know that the Lord your God will not give you this excellent land as a possession due to your justices, for you are a very stiff-necked people.

Remember, forget thou not, how thou didst make YHWH thy God wroth in the wilderness; from the day that thou didst go forth out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the YHWH.

Remember, and never forget, how you provoked the Lord your God to anger in the wilderness. You have always contended against the Lord, from the day that you went forth from Egypt, even to this place.

Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the LORD.

Also in Horeb ye made YHWH wroth, and the YHWH was angered with you to have destroyed you.

For at Horeb also, you provoked him, and, becoming angry, he was willing to destroy you,

When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which YHWH made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water.

when I ascended onto the mountain, so that I might receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord formed with you. And I persevered on the mountain for forty days and nights, neither eating bread, nor drinking water.

M S Sam

10  And YHWH delivered unto me the two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the YHWH spoke with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.

10  And the Lord gave me the two tables of stone written with the finger of God, and on them there had been written all the words which the Lord spoke to you in the mountain in the day of the assembly.

11  And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that YHWH gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.

11  And when forty days, and as many nights, had passed, the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.

11  And at the end of forty days and forty nights, the LORD gave me two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.

12  And YHWH said unto me: 'Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people that thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have dealt corruptly; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image.'

12  And the Lord said to me, Arise, go down quickly from hence, for thy people whom thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt have transgressed; they have gone aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them, and have made themselves a molten image.

12  And he said to me: ‘Rise up, and descend quickly from here. For your people, whom you led away from Egypt, have quickly abandoned the way that you have shown to them, and they have made a molten idol for themselves.’

13  Furthermore YHWH spoke unto me, saying: 'I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people;

13  And the Lord spoke to me, saying, I have spoken to thee once and again, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiff-necked people.

13  And again, the Lord said to me: ‘I discern that this people is stiff-necked.

14  let Me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.'

14  And now suffer me utterly to destroy them, and I will blot out their name from under heaven, and will make of thee a nation great and strong, and more numerous than this.

14  Depart from me, so that I may crush them, and abolish their name from under heaven, and appoint you over a nation, which will be greater and stronger than this one.’

15  So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire; and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.

15  And I turned and went down from the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to heaven; and the two tables of the testimonies were in my two hands.

15  And as I was descending from the burning mountain, and I held the two tablets of the covenant with both hands,

16  And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinned against YHWH your God; ye had made you a molten calf; ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which the YHWH had commanded you.

16  And when I saw that ye had sinned against the Lord your God, and had made to yourselves a molten image, and had gone astray out of the way, which the Lord commanded you to keep;

16  and I had seen that you had sinned against the Lord your God, and had made a molten calf for yourselves, and had quickly abandoned his way, which he had revealed to you,

17  And I took hold of the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes.

17  then I took hold of the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before you.

17  I threw down the tablets from my hands, and I broke them in your sight.

M Sam G

18  And I fell down before YHWH, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water; because of all your sin which ye sinned, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the YHWH, to provoke Him.

18  And I fell prostrate before the Lord, just as before, for forty days and nights, not eating bread, and not drinking water, because of all your sins, which you had committed against the Lord, and because you provoked him to anger.

19  For I was in dread of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith YHWH was wroth against you to destroy you. But the YHWH hearkened unto me that time also.

19  And I was greatly terrified because of the wrath and anger, because the Lord was provoked with you utterly to destroy you; yet the Lord hearkened to me at this time also.

19  For I feared his indignation and wrath, which had been stirred up against you, so that he was willing to destroy you. And the Lord heeded me at this time also.

20  Moreover YHWH was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him; and I prayed for Aaron also the same time.

20  And he was angry with Aaron to destroy him utterly, and I prayed for Aaron also at that time.

20  Likewise, he became vehemently angry against Aaron, and he was willing to destroy him, and I prayed for him similarly.

21  And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and beat it in pieces, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust; and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount.--

21  And your sin which ye had made, even the calf, I took, and burnt it with fire, and pounded it and ground it down till it became fine; and it became like dust, and I cast the dust into the brook that descended from the mountain.

21  But as for your sin which you committed, that is, the calf, taking hold of it, I burned it with fire. And breaking it into pieces, and reducing it entirely to dust, I threw it into the torrent that descends from the mountain.

22  And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, ye made YHWH wroth.

22  Also in the burning, and in the temptation, and at the graves of lust, ye provoked the Lord.

22  And in heat, and in trials, and at the Kabrey di ragrigtha the people lusted for meat; you provoked the LORD to anger.

23  And when YHWH sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying: 'Go up and possess the land which I have given you'; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the YHWH your God, and ye believed Him not, nor hearkened to His voice.

23  Likewise when the LORD sent you from Rakim-gia, and said to you, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then you rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and you did not believe him, nor hearken to his voice.

M S Sam

24  Ye have been rebellious against YHWH from the day that I knew you.--

24  Ye were disobedient in the things relating to the Lord from the day in which he became known to you.

24  Instead, you were ever rebellious, from the day when I first began to know you.

25  So I fell down before YHWH the forty days and forty nights that I fell down; because the YHWH had said He would destroy you.

25  And I prayed before the Lord forty days and forty nights, the number that I prayed before, for the Lord said that he would utterly destroy you.

25  Thus I prayed before the LORD forty days and forty nights, because the LORD had said he would destroy you.

26  And I prayed unto YHWH, and said: 'O Lord GOD, destroy not Thy people and Thine inheritance, that Thou hast redeemed through Thy greatness, that Thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

26  And praying, I said: ‘O Lord God, do not destroy your people and your inheritance, whom you have redeemed in your greatness, whom you have led away from Egypt with a strong hand.

27  Remember Thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin;

27  Remember Abraam, and Isaac, and Jacob thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thyself: look not upon the hardness of heart of this people, and their impieties, and their sins.

27  Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Do not look upon the stubbornness of this people, nor upon their wickedness and sinfulness.

28  lest the land whence Thou broughtest us out say: Because YHWH was not able to bring them into the land which He promised unto them, and because He hated them, He hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.

28  Otherwise, perhaps the inhabitants of the land, out of which you have led us, may say: “The Lord was not able to lead them into the land, which he promised to them. And he hated them; therefore, he led them out, so that he might put them to death in the wilderness.”

29  And these are thy people and thy portion, whom thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt with thy great strength, and with thy mighty hand, and with thy high arm.

29  These are your people and your inheritance, whom you have led out by your great strength, and with your outstretched arm.’ ”
