1  And it shall be, when thou art come in unto the land which YHWH thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and dost possess it, and dwell therein;

1  “And when you will have entered into the land which the Lord your God will give to you to possess, and when you will have obtained it and are living within it

2  that thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which thou shalt bring in from thy land that YHWH thy God giveth thee; and thou shalt put it in a basket and shalt go unto the place which the YHWH thy God shall choose to cause His name to dwell there.

2  you shall take the first of all your crops, and place them in a basket, and you shall travel to the place which the Lord your God will choose, so that his name may be invoked there.

2  You shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the land, which you shall bring in from the land which the LORD your God gives you, and shall put it in a basket, and you shall arise and go to the place where the LORD your God chooses to place his name.

3  And thou shalt come unto the priest that shall be in those days, and say unto him: 'I profess this day unto YHWH thy God, that I am come unto the land which the YHWH swore unto our fathers to give us.'

3  And you shall approach the priest who will be in those days, and you shall say to him: ‘I profess this day, before the Lord your God, that I have entered into the land about which he swore to our fathers that he would give it to us.’

3  And you shall go to the priest who shall be in those days: and say to him, I profess this day to the LORD your God that I have come into the land which the LORD swore to our fathers to give us.

4  And the priest shall take the basket out of thy hand, and set it down before the altar of YHWH thy God.

5  And thou shalt speak and say before YHWH thy God: 'A wandering Aramean was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and sojourned there, few in number; and he became there a nation, great, mighty, and populous.

5  And you shall say, in the sight of the Lord your God: ‘The Syrian pursued my father, who descended into Egypt, and he sojourned there in a very small number, and he increased into a great and strong nation and into an innumerable multitude.

5  And you shall speak and say before the LORD your God, My father was led to Aram and he went down into Egypt, and sojourned there for a short time, and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous;

6  And the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and afflicted us, and laid upon us hard bondage.

6  And the Egyptians afflicted us, and they persecuted us, imposing upon us the most grievous burdens.

7  And we cried unto YHWH, the God of our fathers, and the YHWH heard our voice, and saw our affliction, and our toil, and our oppression.

7  and we cried to the Lord our God, and the Lord heard our voice, and saw our humiliation, and our labour, and our affliction.

7  And when we cried to the LORD God of our fathers, the LORD heard our voice and saw our affliction, our labor, and our oppression;

8  And YHWH brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terribleness, and with signs, and with wonders.

8  And the Lord brought us out of Egypt himself with his great strength, and his mighty hand, and his high arm, and with great visions, and with signs, and with wonders.

8  And he led us away from Egypt, with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, with a mighty terror, with signs and wonders.

9  And He hath brought us into this place, and hath given us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.

9  And he led us into this place, and he delivered to us the land flowing with milk and honey.

9  And we came to this place, and the LORD has given us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.

10  And now, behold, I have brought the first of the fruit of the land, which Thou, O YHWH, hast given me.' And thou shalt set it down before YHWH thy God, and worship before the LORD thy God.

10  And because of this, I now offer the first fruits of the land which the Lord has given to me.’ And you shall leave them in the sight of the Lord your God, and you shall adore the Lord your God.

11  And thou shalt rejoice in all the good which YHWH thy God hath given unto thee, and unto thy house, thou, and the Levite, and the stranger that is in the midst of thee.

11  And you shall feast on all the good things which the Lord your God will give to you and to your house: you, and the Levite, and the new arrival who is with you.

12  When thou hast made an end of tithing all the tithe of thine increase in the third year, which is the year of tithing, and hast given it unto the Levite, to the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, that they may eat within thy gates, and be satisfied,

12  And when thou shalt have completed all the tithings of thy fruits in the third year, thou shalt give the second tenth to the Levite, and stranger, and fatherless, and widow; and they shall eat it in thy cities, and be merry.

13  then thou shalt say before YHWH thy God: 'I have put away the hallowed things out of my house, and also have given them unto the Levite, and unto the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, according to all Thy commandment which Thou hast commanded me; I have not transgressed any of Thy commandments, neither have I forgotten them.

13  And thou shalt say before the Lord thy God, I have fully collected the holy things out of my house, and I have given them to the Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, according to all commands which thou didst command me: I did not transgress thy command, and I did not forget it.

14  I have not eaten thereof in my mourning, neither have I put away thereof, being unclean, nor given thereof for the dead; I have hearkened to the voice of YHWH my God, I have done according to all that Thou hast commanded me.

14  And in my distress I did not eat of them, I have not gathered of them for an unclean purpose, I have not given of them to the dead; I have hearkened to the voice of the Lord our God, I have done as thou hast commanded me.

14  I have not eaten from these things in my grief, nor have I separated them due to any kind of uncleanness, nor have I expended any of these things in funerals. I have obeyed the voice of the Lord my God, and I have done all things just as you have instructed me.

15  Look forth from Thy holy habitation, from heaven, and bless Thy people Israel, and the land which Thou hast given us, as Thou didst swear unto our fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.'

15  Look with favor from your sanctuary and from your lofty habitation amid the heavens, and bless your people Israel and the land which you have given to us, just as you swore to our fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.’

16  This day YHWH thy God commandeth thee to do these statutes and ordinances; thou shalt therefore observe and do them with all thy heart, and with all thy soul.

16  On this day the Lord thy God charged thee to keep all the ordinances and judgements; and ye shall observe and do them, with all your heart, and with all your soul.

17  Thou hast avouched YHWH this day to be thy God, and that thou wouldest walk in His ways, and keep His statutes, and His commandments, and His ordinances, and hearken unto His voice.

17  Today, you have chosen the Lord to be your God, so that you may walk in his ways, and keep his ceremonies and commandments and judgments, and obey his command.

17  You have confessed the LORD this day to be your God, and promised to walk in his ways and to keep his statutes and his judgments and his commandments, and to hearken to his voice;

18  And YHWH hath avouched thee this day to be His own treasure, as He hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all His commandments;

18  Today, the Lord has chosen you, so that you may be his particular people, just as he has spoken to you, and so that you may keep all his precepts,

18  And the LORD has promised you again this day to be his beloved people, as he had promised you, that you shall keep and do all his commandments;

19  and to make thee high above all nations that He hath made, in praise, and in name, and in glory; and that thou mayest be a holy people unto YHWH thy God, as He hath spoken.

19  and that thou shouldest be above all nations, as he has made thee renowned, and a boast, and glorious, that thou shouldest be a holy people to the Lord thy God, as he has spoken.

19  and so that he may cause you to be more exalted than all the nations which he has created, for the sake of his own praise and name and glory, in order that you may be a holy people for the Lord your God, just as he has spoken.”

27:1  And Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying: 'Keep all the commandment which I command you this day.

27:2  And it shall be on the day when ye shall pass over the Jordan unto the land which YHWH thy God giveth thee, that thou shalt set thee up great stones, and plaster them with plaster.

2  And when you have crossed over the Jordan, into the land which the Lord your God will give to you, you shall erect immense stones, and you shall coat them with plaster,

27:3  And thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law, when thou art passed over; that thou mayest go in unto the land which YHWH thy God giveth thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the YHWH, the God of thy fathers, hath promised thee.

3  so that you may be able to write upon them all the words of this law, when you have crossed the Jordan so as to enter into the land which the Lord your God will give to you, a land flowing with milk and honey, just as he swore to your fathers.

27:4  And it shall be when ye are passed over the Jordan, that ye shall set up these stones, which I command you this day, in mount Ebal, and thou shalt plaster them with plaster.

4  Therefore, when you have crossed over the Jordan, erect the stones, just as I instruct you to do this day, on Mount Ebal. And you shall coat them with plaster,

27:5  And there shalt thou build an altar unto YHWH thy God, an altar of stones; thou shalt lift up no iron tool upon them.

5  and you shall build, in that place, an altar to the Lord your God out of stones which have not been touched by iron,

27:6  Thou shalt build the altar of YHWH thy God of unhewn stones; and thou shalt offer burnt-offerings thereon unto the YHWH thy God.

6  out of stones which have not been hewn or polished. And you shall offer holocausts on it to the Lord your God.

6  You shall build the altar of the LORD your God of undressed stones, and you shall offer burnt offerings on it to the LORD your God

27:7  And thou shalt sacrifice peace-offerings, and shalt eat there; and thou shalt rejoice before YHWH thy God.

7  And you shall immolate peace victims. And you shall eat and feast in that place, in the sight of the Lord your God.

7  And you shall offer peace offerings, and shall eat there and rejoice before the LORD your God.

27:8  And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law very plainly.'

8  And you shall write upon the stones all the words of this law, plainly and clearly.”

27:9  And Moses and the priests the Levites spoke unto all Israel, saying: 'Keep silence, and hear, O Israel; this day thou art become a people unto YHWH thy God.

27:10  Thou shalt therefore hearken to the voice of YHWH thy God, and do His commandments and His statutes, which I command thee this day.'

10  And thou shalt hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and shalt do all his commands, and his ordinances, as many as I command thee this day.

10  You shall listen to his voice, and you shall do the commandments and justices, which I am entrusting to you.”

27:11  And Moses charged the people the same day, saying

27:12  'These shall stand upon mount Gerizim to bless the people, when ye are passed over the Jordan: Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Joseph, and Benjamin;

12  These shall stand to bless the people on mount Garizin having gone over Jordan; Symeon, Levi, Judas, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.

12  These tribes shall stand upon mount Gerizim to bless the people when you have crossed the Jordan: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin;

27:13  and these shall stand upon mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, and Asher, and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.

13  And in the opposite region, there shall stand upon Mount Ebal, as a curse: Reuben, Gad, and Asher, and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.

27:14  And the Levites shall speak, and say unto all the men of Israel with a loud voice

27:15  Cursed be the man that maketh a graven or molten image, an abomination unto YHWH, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and setteth it up in secret. And all the people shall answer and say: Amen.

15  Cursed is the man whosoever shall make a graven or molten image, an abomination to the Lord, the work of the hands of craftsmen, and shall put it in a secret place: and all the people shall answer and say, So be it.

27:16  Cursed be he that dishonoureth his father or his mother. And all the people shall say: Amen.

27:17  Cursed be he that removeth his neighbour's landmark. And all the people shall say: Amen.

27:18  Cursed be he that maketh the blind to go astray in the way. And all the people shall say: Amen.

27:19  Cursed be he that perverteth the justice due to the stranger, fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say: Amen.

19  Cursed is every one that shall pervert the judgement of the stranger, and orphan, and widow: and all the people shall say, So be it.

27:20  Cursed be he that lieth with his father's wife; because he hath uncovered his father's skirt. And all the people shall say: Amen.

20  Cursed be he who lies with his father’s wife, and so exposes the covering of his bed. And all the people shall say: Amen.

27:21  Cursed be he that lieth with any manner of beast. And all the people shall say: Amen.

27:22  Cursed be he that lieth with his sister, the daughter of his father, or the daughter of his mother. And all the people shall say: Amen.

22  Cursed is he that lies with his sister by his father or his mother: and all the people shall say, So be it.

27:23  Cursed be he that lieth with his mother-in-law. And all the people shall say: Amen.

23  Cursed is he that lies with his daughter-in-law: and all the people shall say, So be it. Cursed is he that lies with his wife’s sister: and all the people shall say, So be it.

27:24  Cursed be he that smiteth his neighbour in secret. And all the people shall say: Amen.

27:25  Cursed be he that taketh a bribe to slay an innocent person. And all the people shall say: Amen.

25  Cursed is he whosoever shall have taken a bribe to slay an innocent man: and all the people shall say, So be it.

25  Cursed be he who accepts gifts in order to strike down the life of innocent blood. And all the people shall say: Amen.

27:26  Cursed be he that confirmeth not the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say: Amen.'

26  Cursed is every man that continues not in all the words of this law to do them: and all the people shall say, So be it.

26  Cursed be he who does not remain in the words of this law, and does not carry them out in deed. And all the people shall say: Amen.”

28:1  And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of YHWH thy God, to observe to do all His commandments which I command thee this day, that the YHWH thy God will set thee on high above all the nations of the earth.

1  “So then, if you will listen to the voice of the Lord your God, so as to keep and do all of his commandments, which I instruct to you this day, the Lord your God will cause you to be more exalted than all the nations which exist upon the earth.

1  AND if you shall hearken diligently to the voice of the LORD your God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command you this day, the LORD your God will set you on high above all the nations of the earth;

28:2  And all these blessings shall come upon thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of YHWH thy God.

28:3  Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.

28:4  Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the young of thy flock.

4  Blessed shall be the offspring of thy body, and the fruits of thy land, and the herds of thy oxen, and the flocks of thy sheep.

28:5  Blessed shall be thy basket and thy kneading-trough.

28:6  Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

6  Blessed shall you be entering and departing.

28:7  YHWH will cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thee; they shall come out against thee one way, and shall flee before thee seven ways.

7  The Lord will grant that your enemies, who rise up against you, will fall down in your sight. They will come against you by one way, and they will flee from your face by seven ways.

7  The LORD shall cause your enemies who rise up against you to surrender defeated before you; they shall come out against you by one way, and flee before you by seven ways.

28:8  YHWH will command the blessing with thee in thy barns, and in all that thou puttest thy hand unto; and He will bless thee in the land which YHWH thy God giveth thee.

8  The Lord send upon thee his blessing in thy barns, and on all on which thou shalt put thine hand, in the land which the Lord thy God gives thee.

8  The Lord will send forth a blessing upon your cellars, and upon all the works of your hands. And he will bless you in the land that you shall receive.

28:9  YHWH will establish thee for a holy people unto Himself, as He hath sworn unto thee; if thou shalt keep the commandments of YHWH thy God, and walk in His ways.

9  The Lord raise thee up for himself a holy people, as he sware to thy fathers; if thou wilt hear the voice of the Lord thy God, and walk in all his ways.

28:10  And all the peoples of the earth shall see that the name of YHWH is called upon thee; and they shall be afraid of thee.

28:11  And YHWH will make thee over-abundant for good, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, in the land which the YHWH swore unto thy fathers to give thee.

11  And the LORD shall enrich you in good things, in the fruit of your body and in the bearing of your cattle and in the fruit of your ground, in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you.

28:12  YHWH will open unto thee His good treasure the heaven to give the rain of thy land in its season, and to bless all the work of thy hand; and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow.

12  The LORD shall open to you his good storehouse, the heaven, to give you rain to your land in its season; and he will bless all the works of your hands; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow; and you shall rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over you.

28:13  And YHWH will make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if thou shalt hearken unto the commandments of the YHWH thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them;

13  And the Lord will appoint you as the head, and not as the tail. And you shall be always above, and not beneath. But only if you will listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I entrust to you this day, and will keep and do them,

28:14  and shalt not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

14  and will not turn aside from them, neither to the right, nor to the left, nor follow strange gods, nor worship them.

28:15  But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of YHWH thy God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee.

15  But if you are not willing to listen to the voice of the Lord your God, so as to keep and do all his commandments and ceremonies, which I instruct to you this day, all these curses shall come to you, and take hold of you.

28:16  Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field.

16  Cursed shall you be in the city, cursed in the field.

28:17  Cursed shall be thy basket and thy kneading-trough.

17  Cursed shall be your barn, and cursed your storehouses.

28:18  Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the young of thy flock.

28:19  Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

19  Cursed shall you be entering, and cursed departing.

28:20  YHWH will send upon thee cursing, discomfiture, and rebuke, in all that thou puttest thy hand unto to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the evil of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken Me.

20  The Lord send upon thee want, and famine, and consumption of all things on which thou shalt put thy hand, until he shall have utterly destroyed thee, and until he shall have consumed thee quickly because of thine evil devices, because thou hast forsaken me.

20  The Lord will send famine and hunger upon you, and a rebuke upon all the works that you do, until he quickly crushes and perishes you, because of your very wicked innovations, by which you have forsaken me.

28:21  YHWH will make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until He have consumed thee from off the land, whither thou goest in to possess it.

21  May the Lord join a pestilence to you, until he consumes you from the land, which you shall enter so as to possess.

28:22  YHWH will smite thee with consumption, and with fever, and with inflammation, and with fiery heat, and with drought, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.

22  The Lord smite thee with distress, and fever, and cold, and inflammation, and blighting, and paleness, and they shall pursue thee until they have destroyed thee.

22  May the Lord strike you with destitution, with fever and cold, with burning and heat, and with polluted air and rot, and may he pursue you until you perish.

28:23  And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.

23  May the heavens which are above you be of brass, and may the ground upon which you tread be of iron.

28:24  YHWH will make the rain of thy land powder and dust; from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

24  The Lord thy God make the rain of thy land dust; and dust shall come down from heaven, until it shall have destroyed thee, and until it shall have quickly consumed thee.

24  May the Lord give you dust instead of rain upon your land, and may ashes descend from heaven over you, until you have been wiped away.

28:25  YHWH will cause thee to be smitten before thine enemies; thou shalt go out one way against them, and shalt flee seven ways before them; and thou shalt be a horror unto all the kingdoms of the earth.

25  May the Lord hand you over to fall before your enemies. May you go forth against them by one way, and flee by seven ways, and may you be scattered across all the kingdoms of the earth.

28:26  And thy carcasses shall be food unto all fowls of the air, and unto the beasts of the earth, and there shall be none to frighten them away.

28:27  YHWH will smite thee with the boil of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed.

27  May the Lord strike you with the ulcer of Egypt, and may he strike the part of your body, through which the dung goes out, with disease as well as itch, so much so that you are unable to be cured.

27  The LORD will smite you with the boils of Egypt and with hemorrhoids and with leprosy and with the itch, and thereof you cannot be healed.

28:28  YHWH will smite thee with madness, and with blindness, and with astonishment of heart.

28  The Lord smite thee with insanity, and blindness, and astonishment of mind.

28  May the Lord strike you with frenzy and blindness and a madness of the mind.

28:29  And thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not make thy ways prosperous; and thou shalt be only oppressed and robbed alway, and there shall be none to save thee.

29  And may you grope at midday, just as a blind man is accustomed to grope in darkness, and may your paths not be straight. And at all times may you suffer slander and be oppressed with violence, and may you have no one who may free you.

29  And you shall grope at noonday, as the blind grope in darkness, and you shall not prosper in your ways; and you shall be carried away violently, and oppressed and wronged all your days, and no man shall save you.

28:30  Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her; thou shalt build a house, and thou shalt not dwell therein; thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not use the fruit thereof.

30  May you take a wife, though another sleeps with her. May you build a house, but not live within it. May you plant a vineyard, and not gather its vintage.

30  You shall betroth a wife, and another man shall take her; you shall build a house, and you shall not dwell in it; you shall plant a vineyard, and you shall not press grapes of it.

28:31  Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof; thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee; thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies; and thou shalt have none to save thee.

31  May your ox be immolated before you, though you do not eat from it. May your donkey be seized in your sight, and not restored to you. May your sheep be given to your enemies, and may there be no one who may help you.

31  Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, and you shall not eat of it; your ass shall be violently taken away from you, and shall not be restored to you; your sheep shall be given to your enemies, and you shall have none to rescue them.

28:32  Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day; and there shall be nought in the power of thy hand.

32  May your sons and your daughters be handed over to another people, as your eyes watch and languish at the sight of them throughout the day, and may there be no strength in your hand.

32  Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, and your eyes shall look on, and you shall grieve over them all the day long; and there shall be no might in your hand to do anything.

28:33  The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed away

33  May a people you do not know eat the fruits of your land and of all your labors. And may you continually suffer from slander and oppression every day.

28:34  so that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.

34  And may you be stupefied at the terror of the things your eyes will see.

28:35  YHWH will smite thee in the knees, and in the legs, with a sore boil, whereof thou canst not be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the crown of thy head.

35  May the Lord strike you with a very grievous ulcer in the knees and in the legs, and may you be unable to attain health, from the sole of the foot to the top of the head.

28:36  YHWH will bring thee, and thy king whom thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation that thou hast not known, thou nor thy fathers; and there shalt thou serve other gods, wood and stone.

36  May the Lord lead you and your king, whom you will have appointed over yourself, into a nation which you and your fathers have not known. And there you will serve foreign gods, of wood and of stone.

28:37  And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all the peoples whither YHWH shall lead thee away.

37  And you will become nothing but a proverb and a fable to all the peoples to whom the Lord will lead you.

37  And you shall become a horror, a proverb, and a byword, among all nations where the LORD your God shall drive you.

28:38  Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather little in; for the locust shall consume it.

38  You will sow much seed upon the ground, but you will harvest little. For the locusts will devour everything.

38  You shall carry much seed into your field, and you shall gather but little in; for the locust shall consume it.

28:39  Thou shalt plant vineyards and dress them, but thou shalt neither drink of the wine, nor gather the grapes; for the worm shall eat them.

39  You will dig and plant a vineyard, but you will not drink the wine, nor gather anything at all from it. For it will be devastated by worms.

39  You shall plant a vineyard and dress it, but you shall neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes, because the worms shall eat it.

28:40  Thou shalt have olive-trees throughout all thy borders, but thou shalt not anoint thyself with the oil; for thine olives shall drop off.

40  You will have olive trees in all your borders, but you will not be anointed with the oil. For the olives will fall off and perish.

28:41  Thou shalt beget sons and daughters, but they shall not be thine; for they shall go into captivity.

41  You will conceive sons and daughters, and you will not enjoy them. For they will be led into captivity.

41  You shall beget sons and daughters, but they shall not remain yours; for they shall go into captivity.

28:42  All thy trees and the fruit of thy land shall the locust possess.

42  Rot will consume all the trees, as well as the fruits of your land.

42  All your trees and fruits of your land shall the locust consume.

28:43  The stranger that is in the midst of thee shall mount up above thee higher and higher; and thou shalt come down lower and lower.

43  The new arrival who lives with you in the land will ascend over you, and be higher. But you will descend, and be lower.

28:44  He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him; he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail.

44  He will lend to you, and you will not lend to him. He will be as the head, and you will be as the tail.

28:45  And all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou didst not hearken unto the voice of YHWH thy God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded thee.

45  And all these curses shall come to you, and shall pursue you, and shall take hold of you, until you pass away, because you would not listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and you would not serve his commandments and ceremonies, which he has instructed to you.

45  Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and shall pursue you and overtake you, until you are destroyed; because you did not hearken to the voice of the LORD your God, and did not keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded you;

28:46  And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever;

46  And these things shall be signs in thee, and wonders among thy seed for ever;

46  And there will be the signs and portents with you, and with your offspring, forever.

28:47  because thou didst not serve YHWH thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, by reason of the abundance of all things;

47  Because you did not serve the Lord your God, with gladness and a joyful heart, over the abundance of all things.

28:48  therefore shalt thou serve thine enemy whom YHWH shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things; and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.

48  You will serve your enemy, whom the Lord will send to you, in hunger and thirst and nakedness, and in destitution of all things. And he will place an iron yoke upon your neck, until he has crushed you.

28:49  YHWH will bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as the vulture swoopeth down; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand;

49  The Lord shall bring upon thee a nation from the extremity of the earth, like the swift flying of an eagle, a nation whose voice thou shalt not understand;

49  The Lord will lead over you a nation from far away, even from the furthest parts of the earth, like an eagle flying with great force, whose language you are not able to understand

28:50  a nation of fierce countenance, that shall not regard the person of the old, nor show favour to the young.

50  a nation bold in countenance, which shall not respect the person of the aged and shall not pity the young.

50  a very insolent nation, which will show no deference to elders, nor take pity on little ones.

28:51  And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy ground, until thou be destroyed; that also shall not leave thee corn, wine, or oil, the increase of thy kine, or the young of thy flock, until he have caused thee to perish.

51  And he will devour the fruit of your cattle, and the fruits of your land, until you have passed away, without leaving behind you wheat, or wine, or oil, or herds of oxen, or flocks of sheep: until he utterly destroys you.

51  And they shall eat the young of your cattle and the fruit of your land, until they destroy you; they also shall not leave you either grain or wine or oil or herds of oxen or flocks of sheep, until they have destroyed you.

28:52  And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fortified walls come down, wherein thou didst trust, throughout all thy land; and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which YHWH thy God hath given thee.

52  and have utterly crushed thee in thy cities, until the high and strong walls be destroyed, in which thou trustest, in all thy land; and it shall afflict thee in thy cities, which he has given to thee.

52  And he will crush you in all your cities. And your strong and lofty walls, in which you trusted, will be destroyed throughout all your land. You will be besieged within your gates throughout all your land, which the Lord your God will give to you.

28:53  And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters whom YHWH thy God hath given thee; in the siege and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall straiten thee.

53  And you will eat the fruit of your womb, and the flesh of your sons and of your daughters, which the Lord your God will give to you, due to the anguish and devastation with which your enemy will oppress you.

53  And you shall eat the fruit of your own body, the flesh of your sons and of your daughters, whom the LORD your God has given you: and you shall eat them in the siege and in the distress with which your enemies shall harass you;

28:54  The man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil against his brother, and against the wife of his bosom, and against the remnant of his children whom he hath remaining;

54  The man who is pampered and very self-indulgent among you will vie with his own brother, and with the wife who lies at his bosom,

28:55  so that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat, because he hath nothing left him; in the siege and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemy shall straiten thee in all thy gates.

55  lest he give to them from the flesh of his sons, which he will eat. For he has nothing else due to the siege and the destitution, with which your enemies will devastate you within all your gates.

28:56  The tender and delicate woman among you, who would not adventure to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil against the husband of her bosom, and against her son, and against her daughter;

28:57  and against her afterbirth that cometh out from between her feet, and against her children whom she shall bear; for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly; in the siege and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemy shall straiten thee in thy gates.

57  and over the filth of the afterbirth, which goes forth from between her thighs, and over the children who are born in the same hour. For they will eat them secretly, due to the scarcity of all things during the siege and the devastation, with which your enemy will oppress you within your gates.

28:58  If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and awful Name, YHWH thy God;

58  If you will not keep and do all the words of this law, which have been written in this volume, and fear his glorious and terrible name, that is, the Lord your God,

28:59  then YHWH will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance.

59  then the Lord shall magnify thy plagues, and the plagues of thy seed, great and wonderful plagues, and evil and abiding diseases.

59  then the Lord will increase your plagues, and the plagues of your offspring, plagues great and long-lasting, infirmities very grievous and continuous.

28:60  And He will bring back upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast in dread of; and they shall cleave unto thee.

60  Moreover he will bring upon you all the diseases of Egypt, of which you were afraid; and they shall cleave to you.

28:61  Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will YHWH bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

61  And the Lord shall bring upon thee every sickness, and every plague that is not written, and every one that is written in the book of this law, until he shall have destroyed thee.

61  In addition, the Lord will lead over you all the diseases and plagues that are not written in the volume of this law, until he crushes you.

28:62  And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou didst not hearken unto the voice of YHWH thy God.

62  And you will remain few in number, though you were before like the stars of heaven in multitude, because you would not listen to the voice of the Lord your God.

28:63  And it shall come to pass, that as YHWH rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the YHWH will rejoice over you to cause you to perish, and to destroy you; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest in to possess it.

63  And just as before, when the Lord rejoiced over you, doing good for you and multiplying you, so shall he rejoice, scattering and overturning you, so as to take you away from the land, which you shall enter in order to possess.

63  And as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you and exterminate you; and you shall be carried away from the land which you are entering to possess.

28:64  And YHWH shall scatter thee among all peoples, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou nor thy fathers, even wood and stone.

64  And the Lord thy God shall scatter thee among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other; and thou shalt there serve other gods, wood and stone, which thou hast not known, nor thy fathers.

64  The Lord will disperse you among all the peoples, from the heights of the earth to its furthest limits. And there you will serve foreign gods of wood and of stone, which you and your fathers did not know.

28:65  And among these nations shalt thou have no repose, and there shall be no rest for the sole of thy foot; but YHWH shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and languishing of soul.

65  Moreover among those nations he will not give thee quiet, neither by any means shall the sole of thy foot have rest; and the Lord shall give thee there another and a misgiving heart, and failing eyes, and a wasting soul.

65  Similarly, you will not have tranquility, even within those nations, nor will there be any rest for the steps of your feet. For the Lord will give to you in that place a fearful heart, and failing eyes, and a life consumed with grieving.

28:66  And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear night and day, and shalt have no assurance of thy life.

66  And your life will be as if it were hanging before you. You will be afraid night and day, and you will not have confidence in your own life.

66  And your life shall be uncertain before you; and you shall fear day and night, and shall have no assurance of your life;

28:67  In the morning thou shalt say: 'Would it were even!' and at even thou shalt say: 'Would it were morning!' for the fear of thy heart which thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.

67  In the morning you will say, ‘Who will grant evening to me?’ and at evening, ‘Who will grant morning to me?’ because of the dread of your heart, with which you will be terrified, and because of those things that you will see with your eyes.

67  In the morning you shall say, Would God it were evening! and in the evening you shall say, Would God it were morning! because of the fear of your heart with which you shall fear, and because of the hardships which you shall see with your eyes.

28:68  And YHWH shall bring thee back into Egypt in ships, by the way whereof I said unto thee: 'Thou shalt see it no more again'; and there ye shall sell yourselves unto your enemies for bondmen and for bondwoman, and no man shall buy you.

68  And the Lord shall bring thee back to Egypt in ships, by the way of which I said, Thou shalt not see it again; and ye shall be sold there to your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and none shall buy you.

68  The Lord will lead you back into Egypt with a fleet of ships, along the way, about which he said to you that you would not see it again. In that place, you will be put up for sale as men and women servants to your enemies, but there will be no one willing to buy you.”

29:2  And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them: Ye have seen all that YHWH did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land;

29:3  the great trials which thine eyes saw, the signs and those great wonders;

3  The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles

29:4  but YHWH hath not given you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.

4  Yet the Lord God has not given you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, until this day.

4  But the Lord has not given you an understanding heart, and seeing eyes, and ears that are able to hear, even to this present day.

29:5  And I have led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.

5  And he led you forty years in the wilderness; your garments did not grow old, and your sandals were not worn away off your feet.

5  He led you for forty years through the desert. Your garments have not been worn out, nor have the shoes on your feet been consumed by age.

29:6  Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink; that ye might know that I am YHWH your God.

6  Ye did not eat bread, ye did not drink wine or strong drink, that ye might know that I am the Lord your God.

29:7  And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us unto battle, and we smote them.

7  And ye came as far as this place; and there came forth Seon king of Esebon, and Og king of Basan, to meet us in war.

29:8  And we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of the Manassites.

29:9  Observe therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may make all that ye do to prosper.

9  And ye shall take heed to do all the words of this covenant, that ye may understand all things that ye shall do.

9  Therefore, keep the words of this covenant, and fulfill them, so that you may understand all that you are doing.

29:10  Ye are standing this day all of you before YHWH your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, even all the men of Israel,

10  Today, you all stand in the sight of the Lord your God: your leaders, and tribes, and those greater by birth, and teachers, all the people of Israel,

29:11  your little ones, your wives, and thy stranger that is in the midst of thy camp, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water;

11  your wives, and your children, and the stranger who is in the midst of your camp, from your hewer of wood even to your drawer of water,

11  your children and wives, and the new arrival who dwells with you in the camp, aside from those who cut wood, and those who bring water,

29:12  that thou shouldest enter into the covenant of YHWH thy God--and into His oath--which the YHWH thy God maketh with thee this day;

12  so that you may cross into the covenant of the Lord your God, and into the oath which the Lord your God strikes with you today.

12  That you may not transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, and the oath of the LORD your God, which he made with you this day;

29:13  that He may establish thee this day unto Himself for a people, and that He may be unto thee a God, as He spoke unto thee, and as He swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

13  So shall he raise you up as a people to himself, and so shall he be your God, just as he has spoken to you, and just as he swore to your fathers: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

13  Because he will establish you this day a people to himself, and he will be to you the God, as he has promised you, and as he has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

29:14  Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath;

14  And I do not appoint to you alone this covenant and this oath;

14  And I am not forming this covenant and confirm these oaths with you alone,

29:15  but with him that standeth here with us this day before YHWH our God, and also with him that is not here with us this day--

15  but to those also who are here with you to-day before the Lord your God, and to those who are not here with you to-day.

15  but with all those who are present as well as those who are absent.

29:16  for ye know how we dwelt in the land of Egypt; and how we came through the midst of the nations through which ye passed;

16  (For you know how we have sojourned in the land of Egypt; and how we came through the nations which you passed by;

29:17  and ye have seen their detestable things, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were with them--

17  you saw their abominations and filth, that is, their idols of wood and of stone, of silver and of gold, which they worshipped,

17  And you have seen their abominations and their idols of wood and stone, overlaid with silver and gold).

29:18  lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from YHWH our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood;

18  Perhaps there is among you a man or woman or family or tribe whose heart turns away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; or perhaps there is among you a root that springs up and bears poison and wormwood;

29:19  and it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying: 'I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart--that the watered be swept away with the dry';

29:20  YHWH will not be willing to pardon him, but then the anger of the YHWH and His jealousy shall be kindled against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven;

20  But the Lord would not ignore him. Instead, at that time, his fury and zealousness would be very greatly enflamed against that man, and all the curses which have been written in this volume would settle upon him. And the Lord would abolish his name from under heaven,

29:21  and YHWH shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that is written in this book of the law.

21  And the Lord shall separate that man for evil of all the children of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in the book of this law.

21  and consume him unto perdition out of all the tribes of Israel, according to the curses which are contained in the book of this law and in the covenant.

29:22  And the generation to come, your children that shall rise up after you, and the foreigner that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses wherewith YHWH hath made it sick;

22  And the subsequent generation would speak out, along with the sons who will be born afterward. And the sojourners, who will arrive from far away, will see the plagues of that land and the infirmities with which the Lord will have afflicted it,

29:23  and that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and a burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which YHWH overthrew in His anger, and in His wrath;

23  having burned it with sulphur and molten salt, so that it can no longer be sown. And certainly no greenery would spring up, as in the example of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord overturned with his wrath and fury.

29:24  even all the nations shall say 'Wherefore hath YHWH done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger?'

24  and all the nations shall say, Why has the Lord done thus to this land? what is this great fierceness of anger?

24  And so, all the nations would say: ‘Why has the Lord acted this way toward this land? What is this immense wrath of his fury?’

29:25  then men shall say: 'Because they forsook the covenant of YHWH, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them forth out of the land of Egypt;

25  And they will respond: ‘Because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, which he formed with their fathers, when he led them away from the land of Egypt.

29:26  and went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods that they knew not, and that He had not allotted unto them;

26  and they went and served other gods, which they knew not, neither did he assign them to them.

26  For they went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods whom they knew not, and whom he had not given unto them

29:27  therefore the anger of YHWH was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curse that is written in this book;

27  And the Lord was exceedingly angry with that land to bring upon it according to all the curses which are written in the book of this law.

27  For this reason, the fury of the Lord was enraged against this land, so as to lead over it all the curses which have been written in this volume.

29:28  and YHWH rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day'.--

28  And he has cast them out of their own land, with anger and fury, and with a very great indignation, and he has thrown them into a strange land, just as has been proven this day.’

29:29  The secret things belong unto YHWH our God; but the things that are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

29  These hidden things of the Lord our God have been revealed to us and to our sons in perpetuity, so that we may accomplish all the words of this law.”
