The Bible in Its Traditions

Ezekiel 30:0; 20:1–26:21

M G S
V

And it came to pass in the seventh year, in the fifth month, the tenth day of the month, that certain of the elders of Israel came to inquire of YHWH, and sat before me.

And it happened that, in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, men from the elders of Israel arrived, so that they might inquire of the Lord, and they sat before me.

M G V

And the word of YHWH came unto me, saying

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

M S

'Son of man, speak unto the elders of Israel, and say unto them: Thus saith YHWH GOD: Are ye come to inquire of Me? As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will not be inquired of by you.

Son of man, speak to the elders of the house of Israel, and thou shalt say to them, Thus saith the Lord; Are ye come to enquire of me? As I live, I will not be enquired of by you, saith the Lord.

“Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel, and you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord God: Have you arrived in order to inquire of me? As I live, I will not answer you, says the Lord God.

Wilt thou judge them, son of man, wilt thou judge them? cause them to know the abominations of their fathers;

Shall I utterly take vengeance on them, son of man? testify to them of the iniquities of their fathers

If you judge them, if you judge, O son of man, reveal to them the abominations of their fathers.

M G V S

and say unto them: Thus saith YHWH GOD: In the day when I chose Israel, and lifted up My hand unto the seed of the house of Jacob, and made Myself known unto them in the land of Egypt, when I lifted up My hand unto them, saying: I am YHWH your God;

in that day I lifted up My hand unto them, to bring them forth out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had sought out for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the beauty of all lands;

M G S
V

and I said unto them: Cast ye away every man the detestable things of his eyes, and defile not yourselves with the idols of Egypt; I am YHWH your God.

And I said to them: ‘Let each one cast away the offenses of his eyes, and do not choose to defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.’

M S
G
V

But they rebelled against Me, and would not hearken unto Me; they did not every man cast away the detestable things of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt; then I said I would pour out My fury upon them, to spend My anger upon them in the midst of the land of Egypt.

But they revolted from me, and would not hearken to me: they cast not away the abominations of their eyes, and forsook not the devices of Egypt: then I said that I would pour out my wrath upon them, to accomplish my wrath upon them in the midst of Egypt.

But they provoked me, and they were not willing to listen to me. Each one of them did not cast away the abominations of his eyes, nor did they leave behind the idols of Egypt. And so, I said that I would pour out my indignation upon them, and fulfill my wrath against them, in the midst of the land of Egypt.

M G

But I wrought for My name's sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, among whom they were, in whose sight I made Myself known unto them, so as to bring them forth out of the land of Egypt.

But I acted for the sake of my name, so that it would not be violated in the sight of the Gentiles, in the midst of whom they were, and among whom I appeared to them, so that I might lead them away from the land of Egypt.

But I pitied them for my name's sake, that it should not be defiled among the Gentiles, in whose sight I revealed myself to them to bring them forth out of the land of Egypt.

M S
G

10  So I caused them to go forth out of the land of Egypt, and brought them into the wilderness.

10  And I brought them into the wilderness.

10  Therefore, I cast them out of the land of Egypt, and I led them away into the desert.

M V S
G

11  And I gave them My statutes, and taught them Mine ordinances, which if a man do, he shall live by them.

11  And I gave them my commandments, and made known to them mine ordinances, all which if a man shall do, he shall even live in them.

M S
G
V

12  Moreover also I gave them My sabbaths, to be a sign between Me and them, that they might know that I am YHWH that sanctify them.

12  And I gave them my sabbaths, that they should be for a sign between me and them, that they should know that I am the Lord that sanctify them.

12  Moreover, I also gave to them my Sabbaths, so that these would be a sign between me and them, and so that they would know that I am the Lord, who sanctifies them.

M V S
G

13  But the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness; they walked not in My statutes, and they rejected Mine ordinances, which if a man do, he shall live by them, and My sabbaths they greatly profaned; then I said I would pour out My fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.

13  And I said to the house of Israel in the wilderness, Walk ye in my commandments: but they walked not in them, and they rejected mine ordinances, which if a man shall do, he shall even live in them; and they grievously profaned my sabbaths: and I said that I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.

M G S
V

14  But I wrought for My name's sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I brought them out.

14  But I acted for the sake of my name, lest it be violated before the Gentiles, from whom I cast them out, in their sight.

15  Yet also I lifted up My hand unto them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the beauty of all lands;

15  And so I lifted up my hand over them in the desert, so as not to lead them into the land that I had given to them, flowing with milk and honey, the foremost of all lands.

M G
V
S

16  because they rejected Mine ordinances, and walked not in My statutes, and profaned My sabbaths--for their heart went after their idols.

16  For they cast aside my judgments, and they did not walk in my precepts, and they violated my Sabbaths. For their heart went after idols.

16  Because they despised my judgments and polluted my sabbaths exceedingly; for their hearts went after their idols.

M S
G
V

17  Nevertheless Mine eye spared them from destroying them, neither did I make a full end of them in the wilderness.

17  Yet mine eyes spared them, so as not to destroy them utterly, and I did not make an end of them in the wilderness.

17  Yet my eye was lenient concerning them, so that I did not utterly destroy them, nor did I consume them in the desert.

M G S
V

18  And I said unto their children in the wilderness: Walk ye not in the statutes of your fathers, neither observe their ordinances, nor defile yourselves with their idols;

18  Then I said to their sons in the wilderness: ‘Do not choose to advance by the precepts of your fathers, nor should you observe their judgments. And do not be defiled by their idols.

M
G V S

19  I am YHWH your God; walk in My statutes, and keep Mine ordinances, and do them;

19  I am the Lord your God; walk in my commandments, and keep mine ordinances, and do them;

M G S
V

20  and hallow My sabbaths, and they shall be a sign between Me and you, that ye may know that I am YHWH your God.

20  And sanctify my Sabbaths, so that these may be a sign between me and you, and so that you may know that I am the Lord your God.’

M G V S

21  But the children rebelled against Me; they walked not in My statutes, neither kept Mine ordinances to do them, which if a man do, he shall live by them; they profaned My sabbaths; then I said I would pour out My fury upon them, to spend My anger upon them in the wilderness.

M S
G
V

22  Nevertheless I withdrew My hand, and wrought for My name's sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I brought them forth.

22  But I wrought so that my name might not be at all profaned before the Gentiles; and I brought them out in their sight.

22  But I turned aside my hand, and I acted for the sake of my name, so that it would not be violated before the Gentiles, from whom I cast them out, before their eyes.

M G
V
S

23  I lifted up My hand unto them also in the wilderness, that I would scatter them among the nations, and disperse them through the countries;

23  Again, I lifted up my hand against them, in the wilderness, so that I would disperse them among the nations, and scatter them among the lands.

23  But I swore to them in the wilderness, that I would scatter them among the Gentiles and disperse them through the countries;

M G S
V

24  because they had not executed Mine ordinances, but had rejected My statutes, and had profaned My sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers' idols.

24  For they had not accomplished my judgments, and they had rejected my precepts, and they had violated my Sabbaths. And their eyes had been after the idols of their fathers.

M S
G
V

25  Wherefore I gave them also statutes that were not good, and ordinances whereby they should not live;

25  So I gave them commandments that were not good, and ordinances in which they should not live.

25  Therefore, I also gave them precepts that were not good, and judgments by which they shall not live.

M S
G V

26  and I polluted them in their own gifts, in that they set apart all that openeth the womb, that I might destroy them, to the end that they might know that I am YHWH.

26  And I will defile them by their own decrees, when I pass through upon every one that opens the womb, that I may destroy them.

M G S
V

27  Therefore, son of man, speak unto the house of Israel, and say unto them: Thus saith YHWH GOD: In this moreover have your fathers blasphemed Me, in that they dealt treacherously with Me.

27  For this reason, son of man, speak to the house of Israel, and you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord God. Yet also in this did your fathers blaspheme me, after they had spurned and despised me,

M S
G
V

28  For when I had brought them into the land, which I lifted up My hand to give unto them, then they saw every high hill, and every thick tree, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the provocation of their offering, there also they made their sweet savour, and there they poured out their drink-offerings.

28  Whereas I brought them into the land concerning which I lifted up mine hand to give it them; and they looked upon every high hill, and every shady tree, and they sacrificed there to their gods, and offered there sweet-smelling savour, and there they poured out their drink-offerings.

28  though I had led them into the land, about which I lifted up my hand, so that I might give it to them: They saw every lofty hill and every leafy tree, and there they immolated their victims, and there they presented the provocation of their oblations, and there they stationed their sweet fragrances, and poured out their libations.

M

29  Then I said unto them: What meaneth the high place whereunto ye go? So the name thereof is called Bamah unto this day.

29  And I said to them, What is Abama, that ye go in thither? and they called its mane Abama, until this day.

29  Then I said to them, What is the shrine to which you go? And its name is called Shrine of Idols to this day.

M S
G

30  Wherefore say unto the house of Israel: Thus saith YHWH GOD: When ye pollute yourselves after the manner of your fathers, and go after their abominations,

30  Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord, Do ye pollute yourselves with the iniquities of your fathers, and do ye go a-whoring after their abominations,

30  Because of this, say to the house of Israel: Thus says the Lord God: Certainly, you are defiled by the way of your fathers, and you have fornicated after their stumbling blocks.

M G V S

31  and when, in offering your gifts, in making your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, unto this day; shall I then be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith YHWH GOD, I will not be inquired of by you;

M S

32  and that which cometh into your mind shall not be at all; in that ye say: We will be as the nations, as the families of the countries, to serve wood and stone.

32  And it shall not be as ye say, We will be as the nations, and as the tribes of the earth, to worship stocks and stones.

32  And the plan of your mind will not occur, saying: ‘We will be like the Gentiles, and like the families of the earth, so that we worship what is wood and stone.’

33  As I live, saith YHWH GOD, surely with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with fury poured out, will I be king over you;

33  Therefore, as I live, saith the Lord, I will reign over you with a strong hand, and with a high arm, and with outpoured wrath

33  As I live, says the Lord God, I will reign over you with a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with fury poured forth.

34  and I will bring you out from the peoples, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with fury poured out;

34  I will bring you out from the nations, and will take you out of the lands wherein ye were dispersed, with a strong hand, and with a high arm, and with outpoured wrath.

34  And I will lead you away from the peoples. And I will gather you from the lands into which you were dispersed. I will reign over you with a powerful hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with fury poured out.

M G V S

35  and I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there will I plead with you face to face.

M S

36  Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith YHWH GOD.

36  As I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I judge you, saith the Lord.

36  Just as I contended in judgment against your fathers in the desert of the land of Egypt, so also will I enter into judgment with you, says the Lord God.

M G V S

37  And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant;

M V S

38  and I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against Me; I will bring them forth out of the land where they sojourn, but they shall not enter into the land of Israel; and ye shall know that I am YHWH.

38  And I will separate from among you the ungodly and the revolters; for I will lead them forth out of their place of sojourning, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the Lord, even the Lord.

39  As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith YHWH GOD: Go ye, serve every one his idols, even because ye will not hearken unto Me; but My holy name shall ye no more profane with your gifts, and with your idols.

39  And as to you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord, even the Lord; Put away each one his evil practices, and hereafter if ye hearken to me, then shall ye no more profane my holy name by your gifts and by devices.

39  And as for you, house of Israel: thus says the Lord God: Walk, each one of you, after your idols and serve them. But if in this also you will not listen to me, and you continue to defile my holy name with your gifts and with your idols,

40  For in My holy mountain, in the mountain of the height of Israel, saith YHWH GOD, there shall all the house of Israel, all of them, serve Me in the land; there will I accept them, and there will I require your heave-offerings, and the first of your gifts, with all your holy things.

40  For upon my holy mountain, on the high mountain, saith the Lord, even the Lord, there shall all the house of Israel serve me for ever: and there will I accept you, and there will I have respect to your first-fruits, and the first-fruits of your offerings, in all your holy things.

40  For on my holy mountain, even in the mountain height of Israel, says the LORD God, there shall all the house of Israel serve me perfectly; there will I be pleased with them, and there will I require their offerings and the first fruits of their harvest and the choicest of their gift offerings with all their holy things.

41  With your sweet savour will I accept you, when I bring you out from the peoples, and gather you out of the countries wherein ye have been scattered; and I will be sanctified in you in the sight of the nations.

41  I will accept you with a sweet-smelling savour, when I bring you out from the nations, and take you out of the countries wherein ye have been dispersed; and I will be sanctified among you in the sight of the nations.

41  I will receive from you a fragrance of sweetness, when I will have led you away from the peoples, and gathered you from the lands into which you were dispersed. And I will be sanctified in you before the eyes of the nations.

42  And ye shall know that I am YHWH, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the country which I lifted up My hand to give unto your fathers.

47  and thou shalt say to the forest of Nageb, Hear the word of the Lord; thus saith the Lord, even the Lord; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour in thee every green tree, and every dry tree: the flame that is kindled shall not be quenched, and every face shall be scorched with it from the south to the north.

47  And you shall say to the meridian forest: Listen to the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will kindle a fire in you, and I will burn up within you every green tree and every dry tree. The flame of the kindling will not be extinguished. 26:17  And they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and say to thee: how art thou destroyed, that wast peopled from the seas, the renowned city, that wast strong in the sea, thou and thy inhabitants, that caused your terror to be on all that inhabit the earth!

17  And taking up a lamentation over you, they will say to you: ‘How could you have perished, you who live in the sea, the famous city that was strong in the sea, with your inhabitants, of whom the whole world was in dread?’

26:18  Now shall the isles tremble in the day of thy fall; yea, the isles that are in the sea shall be affrighted at thy going out.

18  And the isles shall be alarmed at the day of thy fall.

18  Now the ships will be stupefied, in the day of your terror. And the islands of the sea will be disturbed, because no one goes out from you.

26:19  For thus saith YHWH GOD: When I shall make thee a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited; when I shall bring up the deep upon thee, and the great waters shall cover thee;

19  For thus saith the Lord God; When I shall make the city desolate, as the cities that shall not be inhabited, when I have brought the deep up upon thee,

19  For thus says the Lord God: When I will have made you a desolate city, like the cities that are uninhabited, and when I will have led the abyss over you, and many waters will have covered you,

26:20  then will I bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, to the people of old time, and will make thee to dwell in the nether parts of the earth, like the places that are desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I will set glory in the land of the living;

20  and when I will have dragged you down with those who descend into the pit to the everlasting people, and when I will have assembled you in the lowest parts of the earth, like the desolate places of antiquity, with those who have been brought down into the pit, so that you will be uninhabited, and moreover, when I will have given glory to the land of the living

26:21  I will make thee a terror, and thou shalt be no more; though thou be sought for, yet shalt thou never be found again, saith YHWH GOD.'

21  I will reduce you to nothing, and you shall not be, and if you are sought, you will no longer be found, in perpetuity, says the Lord God.”
