The Bible in Its Traditions

Hebrews 7:0; 4:1–10:39

Byz Nes TR V S

Therefore let us fear, lest while the promise remains to enter into His rest, any one of you seems to have fallen short.

Byz Nes V S
TR

For indeed we have had the gospel preached [to us] just as those also; but the word which they heard did not profit those, not having been mixed with faith in those having heard it.

For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

Byz Nes TR
V
S

For we who have believed enter that rest, as He has said: "So I swore in My wrath, they shall not enter My rest,"although His works were finished from the foundation of the world.

For we who have believed shall enter into rest, in the same manner as he said: “So it is as I have sworn in my wrath: They shall not enter into my rest!” And certainly, this is when the works from the foundation of the world have been finished.

But we who have believed will enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, they shall not enter into my rest; for behold, the works of God were from the very foundation of the world.

For He has said somewhere concerning the seventh day thus, "And God rested on the seventh day from all His works;"

For, in a certain place, he spoke about the seventh day in this manner: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.”

For he said concerning the sabbath, God rested on the seventh day from all his works.

Byz Nes V S TR

and again in this place: "They shall not enter My rest."

Byz Nes TR V S

Therefore since it remains [for] some to enter into it, and those formerly having the gospel preached [to them] did not enter on account of disobedience,

Byz V TR
Nes
S

again He appoints a certain day, saying in David, "Today,"after such a time, just as it has been said: "Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts."

he again defineth a certain day, To-day, saying in David so long a time afterward (even as hath been said before), To-day if ye shall hear his voice, Harden not your hearts.

And again, after a long time he appointed another day, as it is written above, for David said, Today if you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Byz Nes S TR
V

For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not have spoken afterward of another day.

For if Jesus had offered them rest, he would never have spoken, afterward, about another day.

Byz Nes V TR
S

Then there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

It is therefore the duty of the people of God to keep the Sabbath.

Byz Nes V S
TR

10  For he who has entered into His rest also rested himself from his works, as God [did] from His own.

10  For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

Byz V
Nes
S TR

11  Therefore let us be diligent to enter into that rest, lest anyone falls in the same example of disobedience.

11  Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, that no man fall after the same example of disobedience.

11  Let us strive therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall like those who were disobedient.

Byz Nes V S TR

12  For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Byz Nes V S
TR

13  And there is no creature hidden before Him, but all things are naked and open to His eyes, to whom we must give an account.

13  Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

Byz Nes V
S
TR

14  Therefore having a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast the confession.

14  We have, therefore, a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus Christ, the Son of God; let us remain firm in his faith.

14  Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

Byz V S
Nes TR

15  For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but having been tempted in all [respects] in quite the same way as [we are], yet without sin.

15  For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but one that hath been in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin.

Byz TR Nes V S

16  Therefore let us come boldly to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Byz Nes V S TR

5:1  For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in the things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins,

Byz V S
Nes TR

5:2  being able to deal gently with those who sin in ignorance and go astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness.

who can bear gently with the ignorant and erring, for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity;

Byz S
Nes TR
V

5:3  On account of this he is obligated to offer [sacrifices ]for sins, just as concerning the people, so also concerning himself.

and by reason thereof is bound, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.

And because of this, he also must make such offerings for sins even for himself, in the same manner as for the people.

Byz Nes S TR
V

5:4  And no man takes this honor for himself, but he that is called by God, just as Aaron also [was].

Neither does anyone take up this honor himself, but rather he who is called by God, just as Aaron was.

Byz S TR
Nes
V

5:5  So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: "You are My Son, Today I have begotten You."

So Christ also glorified not himself to be made a high priest, but he that spake unto him, Thou art my Son, This day have I begotten thee

Thus, even Christ did not glorify himself, so as to become High Priest, but instead, it was God who said to him: “You are my Son. Today I have begotten you.”

Byz V
Nes S TR

5:6  Just as He also says in another place: "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek";

as he saith also in another [place,] Thou art a priest for ever After the order of Melchizedek.

Byz TR Nes V
S

5:7  who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up both prayers and supplications, with strong crying and tears to the [One] who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His fear of God,

Even when he was clothed in the flesh, he offered prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death; and verily he was heard.

Byz Nes TR
V
S

5:8  though He was a Son, He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.

And although, certainly, he is the Son of God, he learned obedience by the things that he suffered.

And though he were a good Son, because of fear and suffering which he endured, he learned obedience.

5:9  And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,

And having reached his consummation, he was made, for all who are obedient to him, the cause of eternal salvation,

And he grew to be perfect, and became the author of life everlasting to all who obey him;

Byz V
Nes TR
S

5:10  having been designated by God a High Priest "according to the order of Melchizedek,"

10  named of God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

10  So he was called by God, a high priest after the order of Mel-chisÆe-dec.

Byz Nes TR V S

5:11  concerning whom we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become sluggish in hearing.

Byz Nes TR V
S

5:12  For indeed, although you ought to be teachers by this time, again you have need [for someone ]to teach you what are the elements of the beginning of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.

12  By now you should be teachers because you have been a long time in training: But even now you need to be taught the primary writings of the word of God; but you are still in need of milk, and not strong meat.

Byz Nes TR S
V

5:13  For everyone who partakes [only ]of milk is unacquainted with the word of righteousness, for he is an infant.

13  For anyone who is still feeding on milk is still unskillful in the Word of Justice; for he is like an infant.

Byz Nes V
S TR

5:14  But solid food is for the mature, for those because of their practice have their senses trained for the distinguishing of both good and evil.

14  But strong meat belongs to those who are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Byz TR Nes V S

6:1  Therefore, leaving the subject of the beginning of Christ, let us be moved to perfection, not again laying down a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,

Byz Nes V TR
S

6:2  of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

And for the doctrine of baptisms, and for the laying on of hands, and for the resurrection of the dead and for eternal judgment?

Byz V
Nes TR
S

6:3  And let us do this if indeed God permits.

And this will we do, if God permit.

If the LORD permits, this we will do.

Byz V S TR
Nes

6:4  For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and became partakers of the Holy Spirit,

For as touching those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit,

Byz Nes S TR
V

6:5  and have tasted the good word of God and [the] powerful deeds of the age to come,

who, despite having tasted the good Word of God and the virtues of the future age, have yet fallen away,

Byz Nes S
V
TR

6:6  and having fallen away, to renew [them] again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and hold Him up to contempt.

to be renewed again to penance, since they are crucifying again in themselves the Son of God and are still maintaining pretenses.

If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Byz S TR

6:7  For the earth which drinks the rain often coming upon it, and bears suitable vegetation for those on account of whom it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God;

For the land which hath drunk the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them for whose sake it is also tilled, receiveth blessing from God

For the earth accepts a blessing from God, by drinking in the rain that often falls upon it, and by producing plants that are useful to those by whom it is cultivated.

Byz Nes TR

6:8  but if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, of which the end [is] for burning.

But whatever brings forth thorns and briers is rejected, and is closest to what is accursed; their consummation is in combustion.

But if it should produce thorns and briers it is rejected and not far from being condemned; and at the end this crop will be used for fuel.

Byz S

6:9  But we are persuaded concerning you, beloved, of better things and those pertaining to salvation, even though we speak in this manner.

But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak

But from you, most beloved, we are confident that there will be things better and closer to salvation; even though we speak in this way.

Byz Nes V S TR

6:10  For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

Byz
Nes V TR
S

6:11  But we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until [the] end,

11  And we desire that each one of you may show the same diligence unto the fulness of hope even to the end

11  We desire that every one of you show the same diligence toward the fulfillment of your hope, even unto the end,

Byz Nes TR
V
S

6:12  lest you become dull, but [become] imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

12  so that you may not be slow to act, but instead may be imitators of those who, through faith and patience, shall inherit the promises.

12  And that you be not slothful, but be followers of those who through faith and patience have become heirs of the promise.

Byz Nes S TR
V

6:13  For when God made a promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself,

13  For God, in making promises to Abraham, swore by himself, (because he had no one greater by whom he might swear),

6:14  saying, "Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you."

14  saying: “Blessing, I shall bless you, and multiplying, I shall multiply you.”

Byz TR Nes S
V

6:15  And so, after he had been patient, he obtained the promise.

15  And in this way, by enduring patiently, he secured the promise.

Byz Nes
V S TR

6:16  For men indeed swear by the greater, and the oath for confirmation [is] an end of every dispute to them.

16  For men swear by what is greater than themselves, and an oath as confirmation is the end of all their controversy.

Byz S
Nes TR V

6:17  Thus God, wanting to show even more clearly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His counsel, guaranteed it by an oath,

17  Wherein God, being minded to show more abundantly unto the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed with an oath;

Byz Nes TR
V TR
S

6:18  in order that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong encouragement, who have fled to take hold of the hope being set before [us];

18  so that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have the strongest solace: we who have fled together so as to hold fast to the hope set before us.

18  Thus, by the promise and by the oath which are unchangeable, and in neither of which could God lie, we find courage to hold fast to the hope that has been promised by him in whom we have taken refuge.

Byz TR Nes
V
S

6:19  which [hope] we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and secure, and which enters into the inner [side] of the veil,

19  This we have as an anchor of the soul, safe and sound, which advances even to the interior of the veil,

19  That promise is like an anchor to us; it upholds the soul so that it may not be shaken, and it penetrates beyond the veil of the temple;

Byz Nes TR V

6:20  where the Forerunner has entered on our behalf, [even] Jesus, having become a High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

20  Therein Jesus has previously entered for our sakes, and become the high priest for ever, after the order of Mel-chisÆe-dec.

Byz Nes V S TR

7:1  For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,

Byz Nes TR
V
S

7:2  to whom also Abraham divided a tenth from all, first being interpreted "king of righteousness,"and then also king of Salem, which is "king of peace,"

And Abraham divided to him a tenth part of everything. And in translation his name is first, indeed, king of justice, and next also king of Salem, that is, king of peace.

And to whom AÆbra-ham also set aside a tenth part from the choice things he had with him. His name is interpreted King of righteousness, and again, King of Salem, which means King of peace.

Byz Nes V TR
S

7:3  without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but having been made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.

Neither his father nor his mother is recorded in the genealogies; and neither the beginning of his days nor the end of his life; but, like the Son of God, his priesthood abides for ever.

Byz S TR
Nes

7:4  But observe how great this [man was], to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils.

Now consider how great this man was, unto whom Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth out of the chief spoils.

Next, consider how great this man is, since the Patriarch Abraham even gave tithes to him from the principal things.

Byz V
Nes TR
S

7:5  And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to collect tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brothers, though they have come from the loins of Abraham;

And they indeed of the sons of Levi that receive the priest`s office have commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though these have come out of the loins of Abraham

For those sons of Levi who received the office of the priesthood, were authorized by law to take tithes from the people; even from their own brethren who also had come out of the loins of Abraham.

Byz V S TR

7:6  but the [one] not tracing his descent from them has received tithes from Abraham, and he has blessed the [one] having the promises.

but he whose genealogy is not counted from them hath taken tithes of Abraham, and hath blessed him that hath the promises.

Byz Nes TR

7:7  Now without any contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better.

Yet this is without any contradiction, for what is less should be blessed by what is better.

Beyond dispute: he who was less was blessed by him who was greater than himself.

Byz S TR

7:8  And here on the one hand mortal men receive tithes, but there on the other he[ receives them], of whom[ ]it is witnessed that he lives.

And here men that die receive tithes; but there one, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.

Byz Nes S

7:9  Even Levi, the [one] receiving tithes, has paid tithes through Abraham, so to speak,

And so it may be said that even Levi, who received tithes, was himself a tithe through Abraham.

Byz Nes V TR

7:10  for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.

10  For he was yet in the loins of his forefather Abraham, when Mel-chisÆe-dec met him.

Byz Nes V

7:11  Therefore, if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people have received the law), why is there yet a need [for] another priest to rise, according to the order of Melchizedek, and not to be called according to the order of Aaron?

11  If therefore perfection had been reached by the Le-vitÆic-al priesthood, by which the law was enacted for the people, what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Mel-chisÆe-dec? Otherwise, the scriptures would have said, that he would be after the order of Aaron.

11  If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

Byz Nes TR
V
S

7:12  For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there occurs a change of law also.

12  For since the priesthood has been transferred, it is necessary that the law also be transferred.

12  Since there was a change in the priesthood, so also there was a change in the law.

Byz V S

7:13  For He concerning whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar.

13  For he of whom these things are said belongeth to another tribe, from which no man hath given attendance at the altar.

Byz Nes V S TR

7:14  For it is evident that our Lord has risen out of Judah, regarding which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood.

Byz V TR

7:15  And it is yet even more clearer, if according to the likeness of Melchizedek, there arises another priest

15  And [what we say] is yet more abundantly evident, if after the likeness of Melchizedek there ariseth another priest,

15  And yet, it is far more evident because he said that another priest would rise after the order of Mel-chisÆe-dec,

Byz V

7:16  who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life.

16  who hath been made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life

Byz S

7:18  For on the one hand an annulment comes about of the preceding commandment on account of its weakness and uselessness.

18  For there is a disannulling of a foregoing commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness

Byz Nes V S TR

7:19  For the law made nothing perfect; but there[ is] the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.

Byz Nes TR

7:20  And inasmuch as [it was] not without an oath,

20  Moreover, it is not without an oath. For certainly, the others were made priests without an oath.

20  And he confirmed it for us by oath.

7:21  for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him that said to Him: "YHWH has sworn and will not relent, 'You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek' ",

21  But this man was made a priest with an oath, by the One who said to him: “The Lord has sworn and he will not repent. You are a priest forever.”

21  For they were made priests without oaths; but this one was made a priest with an oath, as it was said concerning him by David, The LORD has sworn, and will not lie, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Mel-chisÆedec.

Byz Nes V

7:22  by so much more Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.

7:23  Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing.

25  Wherefore also he is able to save to the uttermost them that draw near unto God through him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

25  And for this reason, he is able, continuously, to save those who approach God through him, since he is ever alive to make intercession on our behalf.

7:27  who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices beforehand, on behalf of His own sins and then for the people's, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.

27  And he has no need, daily, in the manner of other priests, to offer sacrifices, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people. For he has done this once, by offering himself.

27  And who needs not daily, as do those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for their own sins, and then for the peopleÆs, for this he did once when he offered up himself.

7:28  For the law appoints men as high priests who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, [appoints] a Son who has been perfected forever.

28  For the law appoints imperfect men priests; but the word of the oath which came after the law appoints the Son who is perfect for evermore.
