1  And when David was a little past the top, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and a hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine.

2Sm16:2  And the king said to Ziba, “What do you intend to do with these things?” And Ziba responded: “The donkeys are for the household of the king, so that they may sit. And the loaves and dried figs are for your servants to eat. But the wine is for anyone to drink who may be faint in the desert.”

2  And the king said unto Ziba: 'What meanest thou by these?' And Ziba said: 'The asses are for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as are faint in the wilderness may drink.'

2Sm16:3  And the king said, “Where is the son of your lord?” And Ziba answered the king: “He remained in Jerusalem, saying, ‘Today, the house of Israel will restore the kingdom of my father to me.’ ”

3  And the king said: 'And where is thy master's son?' And Ziba said unto the king: 'Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem; for he said: To-day will the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father.'

2Sm16:4  And the king said to Ziba, “All the things which were for Mephibosheth are now yours.” And Ziba said, “I beg you that I may find grace before you, my lord the king.”

4  Then said the king to Ziba: 'Behold, thine is all that pertaineth unto Mephibosheth.' And Ziba said: 'I prostrate myself; let me find favour in thy sight, my lord, O king.'

4  And the king said to Siba, Behold, all Memphibosthe’s property is thine. And Siba did obeisance and said, My lord, O king, let me find grace in thine eyes.

2Sm16:5  Then king David went as far as Bahurim. And behold, a man from the kindred of the house of Saul, named Shimei, the son of Gera, went out from there. And going out, he continued on, and he was cursing,

5  And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out thence a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came out, and kept on cursing as he came.

2Sm16:6  and throwing stones against David and against all the servants of king David. And all the people and all the warriors were traveling to the right and to the left sides of the king.

6  And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David; and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.

2Sm16:7  And so, as he was cursing the king, Shimei said: “Go away, go away, you man of blood, and you man of Belial!

6  And he threw stones at him and at all his servants and at all his people and at all his servants who were on his right hand and on his left.

7  And thus said Shimei when he cursed: 'Begone, begone, thou man of blood, and base fellow;

7  And thus Semei said when he cursed him, Go out, go out, thou bloody man, and man of sin.

2Sm16:8  The Lord has repaid you for all the blood of the house of Saul. For you have usurped the kingdom in place of him. And so, the Lord has given the kingdom into the hand of Absalom, your son. And behold, your evils press close upon you, because you are a man of blood.”

8  YHWH hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and the YHWH hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son; and, behold, thou art taken in thine own mischief, because thou art a man of blood.'

2Sm16:9  Then Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, said to the king: “Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go and cut off his head.”

8  The LORD has requited upon you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead you have reigned; and the LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom your son; and, behold, you have been requited for your evil, because you are a bloody man.

9  Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king: 'Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head.'

2Sm16:10  And the king said: “What is it to me and to all of you, O sons of Zeruiah? Permit him, so that he may curse. For the Lord has commanded him to curse David. And who is the one who would dare to say, ‘Why has he done so?’ ”

10  And the king said: 'What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? So let him curse, because YHWH hath said unto him: Curse David; who then shall say: Wherefore hast thou done so?'

2Sm16:11  And the king said to Abishai and to all his servants: “Behold, my son, who went forth from my loins, is seeking my life. How much more does a son of Benjamin do so now? Permit him, so that he may curse, in accord with the command of the Lord.

10  And King David said to him, What is it to me and to you, O sons of Zoriah? Let him curse, it is the LORD who has told him to curse David. Therefore who can say to me, Why has this happened?

11  And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants: 'Behold, my son, who came forth of my body, seeketh my life; how much more this Benjamite now? let him alone, and let him curse; for YHWH hath bidden him.

2Sm16:12  Perhaps the Lord may look with favor upon my affliction, and the Lord may repay me good, in place of the cursing of this day.”

12  It may be that YHWH will look on mine eye, and that the YHWH will requite me good for his cursing of me this day.'

12  If by any means the Lord may look on my affliction, thus shall he return me good for his cursing this day.

2Sm16:13  And so, David continued walking along the way, and his associates with him. But Shimei was advancing along the ridge of the mountain on the side opposite him, cursing and throwing stones at him, and scattering dirt.

13  So David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill-side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.

13  And David and all the men with him went on the way: and Semei went by the side of the hill next to him, cursing as he went, and casting stones at him, and sprinkling him with dirt.

2Sm16:14  And the king and the entire people with him, being weary, went and refreshed themselves there.

14  And the king, and all the people that were with him, came weary; and he refreshed himself there.

2Sm16:15  But Absalom and all his people entered into Jerusalem. Moreover, Ahithophel was with him.

15  And Absalom, and all the people, the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel with him.

15  And Abessalom and all the men of Israel went into Jerusalem, and Achitophel with him.

2Sm16:16  And when Hushai the Archite, David’s friend, had gone to Absalom, he said to him: “May you be well, O king! May you be well, O king!”

16  And it came to pass, when Hushai the Archite, David's friend, was come unto Absalom, that Hushai said unto Absalom: 'Long live the king, long live the king.'

2Sm16:17  And Absalom said to him: “Is this your kindness to your friend? Why did you not go with your friend?”

17  And Absalom said to Hushai: 'Is this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend?'

2Sm16:18  And Hushai responded to Absalom: “By no means! For I will be his, whom the Lord has chosen. And I, and all this people, and all of Israel, will remain with him.

18  And Hushai said unto Absalom: 'Nay; but whom YHWH, and this people, and all the men of Israel have chosen, his will I be, and with him will I abide.

18  And Chusi said to Abessalom, Nay, but following whom the Lord, and this people, and all Israel have chosen, —his will I be, and with him I will dwell.

2Sm16:19  But then too, I declare this: whom should I serve? Is it not the son of the king? Just as I have been subject to your father, so will I be subject to you also.”

19  And again, whom should I serve? should I not serve in the presence of his son? as I have served in thy father's presence, so will I be in thy presence.'

2Sm16:20  Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, “Present a counsel as to what we ought to do.”

20  Then said Absalom to Ahithophel: 'Give your counsel what we shall do.'

20  And Abessalom said to Achitophel, Deliberate among yourselves concerning what we should do.

2Sm16:21  And Ahithophel said to Absalom: “Enter to the concubines of your father, whom he left behind in order to care for the house. Thus, when all of Israel will hear that you disgraced your father, their hands may be strengthened with you.”

21  And Ahithophel said unto Absalom: 'Go in unto thy father's concubines, that he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel will hear that thou art abhorred of thy father; then will the hands of all that are with thee be strong.'

2Sm16:22  Therefore, they spread a tent for Absalom on the rooftop. And he entered to the concubines of his father in the sight of all Israel.

21  And Ahithophel said to Absalom, Go in to your father's concubines, whom he has left to keep his house; and when all Israel shall hear that you have gone in to your father's concubines, then shall the hands of all who are with you be strengthened.

22  So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house; and Absalom went in unto his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel.--

22  And they pitched a tent for Abessalom on the roof, and Abessalom went in to his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.

2Sm16:23  Now the counsel of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was treated as if one were consulting God. So was every counsel of Ahithophel, both when he was with David, and when he was with Absalom.

23  Now the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those days, was as if a man inquired of the word of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

2Sm17:1  Then Ahithophel said to Absalom: “I will choose for myself twelve thousand men, and rising up, I will pursue David this night.

17:1  Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom: 'Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night;

1  And Achitophel said to Abessalom, Let me now choose out for myself twelve thousand men, and I will arise and follow after David this night

2Sm17:2  And rushing against him, for he is weary and has weakened hands, I will strike him. And when all the people who are with him will have fled, I will strike down the king in isolation.

17:2  and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only;

2Sm17:3  And I will lead back the entire people, returning in the manner of one man. For you are seeking only one man. And all the people shall be in peace.”

17:3  and I will bring back all the people unto thee; when all shall have returned, save the man whom thou seekest, all the people will be in peace.'

2Sm17:4  And this word pleased Absalom and all those greater by birth of Israel.

17:4  And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

4  And the saying was right in the eyes of Abessalom, and in the eyes of all the elders of Israel.

2Sm17:5  But Absalom said, “Summon Hushai the Archite, and let us hear what he also may say.”

17:5  Then said Absalom: 'Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.'

5  And Abessalom said, Call now also Chusi the Arachite, and let us hear what is in his mouth, even in his also.

2Sm17:6  And when Hushai had gone to Absalom, Absalom said to him: “Ahithophel has spoken a word in this manner. Should we do it or not? What counsel do you give?”

17:6  And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spoke unto him, saying: 'Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner; shall we do after his saying? if not, speak thou.'

6  And Chusi went in to Abessalom, and Abessalom spoke to him, saying, After this manner spoke Achitophel: shall we do according to his word? but if not, do thou speak.

2Sm17:7  And Hushai said to Absalom, “The counsel that Ahithophel has given at this time is not good.”

17:7  And Hushai said unto Absalom: 'The counsel that Ahithophel hath given this time is not good.'

7  And Chusi said to Abessalom, This counsel which Achitophel has counselled this one time is not good.

2Sm17:8  And again Hushai declared, “You know your father, and the men who are with him, to be very strong and bitter in soul, comparable to a bear raging in the forest when her young have been taken away. Moreover, your father is a man of war, and so he will not live among the people.

17:8  Hushai said moreover: 'Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are embittered in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

2Sm17:9  Perhaps now he hides in pits, or in another place, wherever he wills. And if by chance, in the beginning, anyone may fall, whoever hears about it, no matter what he has heard, will say, ‘There is a slaughter among the people who were following Absalom.’

17:9  Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some place; and it will come to pass, when they fall upon them at the first, and whosoever heareth it shall say: There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom;

9  For, behold, he is now hidden in one of the hills or in some other place: and it shall come to pass when he falls upon them at the beginning, that some one will certainly hear, and say, There has been a slaughter among the people that follow after Abessalom.

2Sm17:10  And even the very strong, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will be weakened out of fear. For all the people of Israel know your father to be a valiant man, and that all who are with him are robust.

17:10  then even he that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, will utterly melt; for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they that are with him are valiant men.

2Sm17:11  But this seems to me to be the right counsel: Let all of Israel be gathered to you, from Dan to Beersheba, like the sand of the sea which is innumerable. And you will be in their midst.

17:11  But I counsel that all Israel be gathered together unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.

2Sm17:12  And we shall rush against him in whatever place he will have been found. And we shall cover him, as the dew usually falls upon the ground. And we shall not leave behind even one of the men who are with him.

11  Therefore I counsel that when all Israel is gathered to you from Dan to Beer-sheba, then you yourself march in their midst.

17:12  So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground; and of him and of all the men that are with him we will not leave so much as one.

2Sm17:13  And if he will enter into any city, all of Israel shall encircle that city with ropes. And we will pull it into the torrent, so that there may not be found even one small stone from it.”

17:13  Moreover, if he withdraw himself into a city, then shall all Israel bring up ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the valley until there be not one small stone found there.'

13  And if he shall have taken refuge with his army in a city, then shall all Israel take ropes to that city, and we will draw it even into the river, that there may not be left there even a stone.

2Sm17:14  And Absalom, with all the men of Israel, said: “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” So, by an act of the Lord, the useful counsel of Ahithophel was defeated, in order that the Lord might lead evil over Absalom.

17:14  And Absalom and all the men of Israel said: 'The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.'--For YHWH had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the YHWH might bring evil upon Absalom.

14  And Abessalom, and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Chusi the Arachite is better than the counsel of Achitophel. For the Lord ordained to disconcert the good counsel of Achitophel, that the Lord might bring all evil upon Abessalom.

2Sm17:15  And Hushai said to the priests, Zadok and Abiathar: “Ahithophel gave counsel to Absalom and to the elders of Israel in this and that manner. And I gave counsel in such and such a manner.

17:15  Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests: 'Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled.

15  And Chusi the Arachite said to Sadoc and Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus Achitophel counselled Abessalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled.

2Sm17:16  Now therefore, send quickly, and report to David, saying: ‘You shall not stay this night in the plains of the desert. Instead, without delay, go across. Otherwise the king may be engulfed, and all the people who are with him.’ ”

17:16  Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying: Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but in any wise pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.'

16  And now send quickly and report to David, saying, Lodge not this night in Araboth of the wilderness: even go and make haste, lest one swallow up the king, and all the people with him.

2Sm17:17  But Jonathan and Ahimaaz remained beside the Fountain of Rogel. And a handmaid went away and reported it to them. And they set out, so that they might carry the report to king David. For they could not be seen, nor enter into the city.

17:17  Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; and a maid-servant used to go and tell them; and they went and told king David; for they might not be seen to come into the city.

2Sm17:18  But a certain young man saw them, and he revealed it to Absalom. Yet truly, they traveled quickly and entered into the house of a certain man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court, and they descended into it.

17  Now Nathan and Ahimaaz were standing by the side of the fountain of the palace, so they might not be seen to enter the city; and a maidservant went and told them; and they went and told King David.

17:18  But a lad saw them, and told Absalom; and they went both of them away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down thither.

2Sm17:19  Then a woman took and spread a covering over the mouth of the well, as if drying hulled barley. And so the matter was hidden.

17:19  And the woman took and spread the covering over the well's mouth, and strewed groats thereon; and nothing was known.

19  And a woman took a covering, and spread it over the mouth of the well, and spread out ground corn upon it to dry, and the thing was not known.

2Sm17:20  And when the servants of Absalom had entered into the house, they said to the woman, “Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” And the woman responded to them, “They passed through hurriedly, after they had taken a little water.” But those who were seeking them, when they had not found them, returned to Jerusalem.

17:20  And Absalom's servants came to the woman to the house; and they said: 'Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?' And the woman said unto them: 'They are gone over the brook of water.' And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.

2Sm17:21  And when they had gone, they ascended from the well. And traveling, they reported to king David, and they said: “Rise up, and go across the river quickly. For Ahithophel has given a counsel of this kind against you.”

17:21  And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David; and they said unto David: 'Arise ye, and pass quickly over the water; for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.'

2Sm17:22  Therefore, David rose up, and all the people who were with him, and they crossed over the Jordan, until first light. And not even one of them was left behind who had not crossed over the river.

21  And after Absalom's servants had gone, they came up out of the well and went and told King David, and said to him, Arise and cross quickly over the water; for thus has Ahithophel counselled against you.

17:22  Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over the Jordan; by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over the Jordan.

22  And David rose up and all the people with him, and they passed over Jordan till the morning light; there was not one missing who did not pass over Jordan.

2Sm17:23  Then Ahithophel, seeing that his counsel had not been done, saddled his donkey, and he rose up and went away to his own house and to his own city. And putting his house in order, he killed himself by hanging. And he was buried in the sepulcher of his father.

17:23  And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and got him home, unto his city, and set his house in order, and strangled himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

2Sm17:24  Then David went to the encampment, and Absalom crossed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

17:24  When David was come to Mahanaim, Absalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

24  And David passed over to Manaim: and Abessalom crossed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

2Sm17:25  Truly, Absalom appointed Amasa in place of Joab over the army. Now Amasa was the son of a man who was called Ithra of Jezrael, who entered to Abigail, the daughter of Nahash, the sister of Zeruiah, who was the mother of Joab.

17:25  And Absalom had set Amasa over the host instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man, whose name was Ithra the Jesraelite, that went in to Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab's mother.

25  And Abessalom appointed Amessai in the room of Joab over the host. And Amessai was the son of a man whose name was Jether of Jezrael: he went in to Abigaia the daughter of Naas, the sister of Saruia the mother of Joab.

2Sm17:26  And Israel made camp with Absalom in the land of Gilead.

17:26  And Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of Gilead.

26  And all Israel and Abessalom encamped in the land of Galaad.

2Sm17:27  And when David had arrived at the encampment, Shobi, the son of Nahash, from Rabbah, of the sons of Ammon, and Machir, the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai, the Gileadite of Rogelim,

17:27  And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,

2Sm17:28  brought to him bedding, and tapestries, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and cooked grain, and beans, and lentils, and fried chick peas,

27  When David came to Mahanaim. Abishai, the son of Nahash of Rabbath of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Gamil of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Dobelin

17:28  brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and parched corn, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse,

2Sm17:29  and honey, and butter, sheep and fattened calves. And they gave these to David and to the people who were with him to eat. For they suspected that the people were faint with hunger and thirst in the desert.

17:29  and honey, and curd, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat; for they said: 'The people is hungry, and faint, and thirsty, in the wilderness.'

2Sm18:1  And so David, having reviewed his people, appointed over them tribunes and centurions.

29  And honey and butter and sheep and cheese of cows, and offered them to David, and to the people who were with him, to eat; for they said, The people are hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness.

18:1  And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.

2Sm18:2  And he placed a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, the brother of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Ittai, who was from Gath. And the king said to the people, “I, too, will go forth with you.”

18:2  And David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people: 'I will surely go forth with you myself also.'

2Sm18:3  And the people responded: “You shall not go out. For if we flee, there will not be great concern in them for us. Or if one half part of us will fall, they will not care much. For you are considered as one for ten thousand. Therefore, it is better that you should be in the city to strengthen us.”

2  And David placed a third part of the people under the command of Joab, and a third part under the command of Abishai the son of Zoriah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the command of Ittai the Gittite.

18:3  But the people said: 'Thou shalt not go forth; for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us; but thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou be ready to succour us out of the city.'

3  And they said, Thou shalt not go out: for if we should indeed flee, they will not care for us; and if half of us should die, they will not mind us; for thou art as ten thousand of us: and now it is well that thou shalt be to us an aid to help us in the city.

2Sm18:4  And the king said to them, “I will do whatever seems good to you.” Therefore, the king stood beside the gate. And the people went out by their troops, by hundreds and by thousands.

18:4  And the king said unto them: 'What seemeth you best I will do.' And the king stood by the gate-side, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.

2Sm18:5  And the king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, “Preserve for me the boy Absalom.” And all the people heard the king commanding all the leaders on behalf of Absalom.

4  And the servants of David said to him, We will go forth quickly to fight against them. And the king said to them, Whatever seems good to you, do it. Then the king stood by the side of the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.

18:5  And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying: 'Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom.' And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.

2Sm18:6  And so, the people departed into the field against Israel. And the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim.

18:6  So the people went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim.

6  And all the people went out into the wood against Israel; and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim.

2Sm18:7  And the people of Israel were cut down in that place by the army of David. And a great slaughter occurred on that day: twenty thousand men.

18:7  And the people of Israel were smitten there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men.

2Sm18:8  Now the battle in that place was dispersed over the face of all the land. And there were many more of the people whom the forest had consumed, than the sword had devoured, on that day.

18:8  For the battle was there spread over the face of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

8  And the battle there was scattered over the face of all the land: and the wood consumed more of the people than the sword consumed among the people in that day.

2Sm18:9  Then it happened that Absalom, riding on a mule, met the servants of David. And when the mule had entered under a thick and large oak tree, his head became trapped in the oak. And while he was suspended between heaven and earth, the mule on which he had been sitting continued on.

18:9  And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. And Absalom was riding upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great terebinth, and his head caught hold of the terebinth, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went on.

2Sm18:10  Then a certain one saw this and reported it to Joab, saying, “I saw Absalom hanging from an oak.”

18:10  And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said: 'Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in a terebinth.'

10  And a man saw it, and reported to Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Abessalom hanging in an oak.

2Sm18:11  And Joab said to the man who had reported it to him, “If you saw him, why did you not stab him to the ground, and I would have given you ten shekels of silver and a belt?”

18:11  And Joab said unto the man that told him: 'And, behold, thou sawest it, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have had to give thee ten pieces of silver, and a girdle.'

2Sm18:12  And he said to Joab: “Even if you weighed out to my hands one thousand silver coins, I would never lay my hands on the son of the king. For in our hearing the king ordered you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, ‘Keep for me the boy Absalom.’

11  And Joab said to the man who told him, When you saw him, why then did you not smite him there and throw him to the ground? And I would have given you ten shekels of silver and a garment.

18:12  And the man said unto Joab: 'Though I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, yet would I not put forth my hand against the king's son; for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying: Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.

12  And the man said to Joab, Were I even to receive a thousand shekels of silver, I would not lift my hand against the king’s son; for in our ears the king charged thee and Abessa and Ethi, saying, Take care of the young man Abessalom for me,

2Sm18:13  Then too, if I had acted with such audacity, against my own life, this would never have been able to be hidden from the king. And would you then have stood by my side?”

18:13  Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against mine own life--and there is no matter hid from the king--then thou thyself wouldest have stood aloof.'

2Sm18:14  And Joab said, “It will not be as you wish. Instead, I will be assailing him in your sight.” Then he took three lances in his hand, and he fixed them in the heart of Absalom. And while he was still clinging to life upon the oak,

13  And if I should have done it, then I would have been guilty; and nothing would have been hidden from the king, and you yourself would have stood against me.

18:14  Then said Joab: 'I may not tarry thus with thee.' And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the terebinth.

14  And Joab said, I will begin this; I will not thus remain with thee. And Joab took three darts in his hand, and thrust them into the heart of Abessalom, while he was yet alive in the heart of the oak.

2Sm18:15  ten young men, armor bearers of Joab, ran up, and striking him, they killed him.

18:15  And ten young men that bore Joab's armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.

2Sm18:16  Then Joab sounded the trumpet, and he held back the people, lest they pursue Israel in their flight, for he was willing to spare the multitude.

18:16  And Joab blew the horn, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel; for Joab held back the people.

2Sm18:17  And they took Absalom, and they threw him into a great pit in the forest. And they piled an exceedingly great heap of stones over him. But all of Israel fled to their own tents.

18:17  And they took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones; and all Israel fled every one to his tent.--

17  And he took Abessalom, and cast him into a great cavern in the wood, into a deep pit, and set up over him a very great heap of stones: and all Israel fled every man to his tent.

2Sm18:18  Now Absalom had raised up for himself, when he was still alive, a monument, which is in the Valley of the King. For he said, “I have no son, and so this shall be the memorial to my name.” And he called the monument by his own name. And it is called the Hand of Absalom, even to this day.

18:18  Now Absalom in his life-time had taken and reared up for himself the pillar, which is in the king's dale; for he said: 'I have no son to keep my name in remembrance'; and he called the pillar after his own name; and it is called Absalom's monument unto this day.

18  Now Abessalom while yet alive had taken and set up for himself the pillar near which he was taken, and set it up so as to have the pillar in the king’s dale; for he said he had no son to keep his name in remembrance: and he called the pillar, Abessalom’s hand, until this day.

2Sm18:19  Then Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok, said, “I will run and report to the king that the Lord has accomplished judgment for him, from the hand of his enemies.”

18:19  Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok: 'Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that YHWH hath avenged him of his enemies.'

19  And Achimaas the son of Sadoc said, Let me run now and carry glad tidings to the king, for the Lord has delivered him from the hand of his enemies.

2Sm18:20  And Joab said to him: “You shall not be the messenger on this day. Instead, you shall report on another day. I am not willing for you to give the report today, because the son of the king is dead.”

18:20  And Joab said unto him: 'Thou shalt not be the bearer of tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day; but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, forasmuch as the king's son is dead.'

2Sm18:21  Then Joab said to Hushai, “Go, and report to the king what you have seen.” Hushai reverenced Joab, and he ran.

20  And Joab said to him, It is not proper that you bear tidings this day, but you may bear tidings another day; this day you shall bear no tidings because the king's son is dead.

18:21  Then said Joab to the Cushite: 'Go tell the king what thou hast seen.' And the Cushite bowed down unto Joab, and ran.

2Sm18:22  And Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok, said to Joab again, “What prevents me from running after Hushai also?” And Joab said to him: “Why do you want to run, my son? You would not be the bearer of good news.”

21  Then Joab said to Cushi, Go tell the king what you have seen; and he ran.

18:22  Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab: 'But come what may, let me, I pray thee, also run after the Cushite.' And Joab said: 'Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou wilt have no reward for the tidings?'

22  And Achimaas the son of Sadoc said again to Joab, Nay, let me also run after Chusi. And Joab said, Why wouldest thou thus run, my son? attend, thou hast no tidings for profit if thou go.

2Sm18:23  And he responded, “But what if I do run?” And he said to him, “Run.” Then Ahimaaz, running along a shorter way, passed Hushai.

18:23  'But come what may, said he, I will run.' And he said unto him: 'Run.' Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and overran the Cushite.

23  And he said, Why should I not run? and Joab said to him, Run. And Achimaas ran along the way of Kechar, and outran Chusi.

2Sm18:24  Now David was sitting between the two gates. Truly, the watchman, who was at the summit of the gate upon the wall, lifting up his eyes, saw a man running alone.

18:24  Now David sat between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.

2Sm18:25  And crying out, he told the king. And the king said, “If he is alone, there is good news in his mouth.” But as he was advancing and drawing nearer,

18:25  And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said: 'If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth.' And he came apace, and drew near.

2Sm18:26  the watchman saw another man running. And so, crying out from the height, he said: “Another man has appeared, running alone.” And the king said, “This one also is a good messenger.”

18:26  And the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called unto the porter, and said: 'Behold another man running alone.' And the king said: 'He also bringeth tidings.'

2Sm18:27  Then the watchman said, “The running of the closest one seems like the running of Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok.” And the king said, “He is a good man, and he arrives bearing good news.”

26  And the watchman drew near toward the gate, and said, Behold, another man is running alone;

18:27  And the watchman said: 'I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.' And the king said: 'He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.'

2Sm18:28  Then, Ahimaaz, crying out, said to the king, “Be well, O king.” And reverencing the king prone on the ground before him, he said, “Blessed be the Lord your God, who has enclosed the men who had lifted up their hands against my lord the king.”

27  Moreover the watchman said, I see the running of the first is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said. He is a good man and comes with good tidings.

18:28  And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king: 'All is well.' And he bowed down before the king with his face to the earth, and said: 'Blessed be YHWH thy God, who hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.'

2Sm18:29  And the king said, “Is there peace for the boy Absalom?” And Ahimaaz said: “I saw a great tumult, O king, when your servant Joab sent me, your servant. I know nothing else.”

18:29  And the king said: 'Is it well with the young man Absalom?' And Ahimaaz answered: 'When Joab sent the king's servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.'

2Sm18:30  And the king said to him, “Pass, and stand here.” And when he had passed and stood still,

29  Then the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered, I saw a great army arrayed against Joab the servant of my lord the king, but I your servant knew not what was the outcome.

18:30  And the king said: 'Turn aside, and stand here.' And he turned aside, and stood still.

2Sm18:31  Hushai appeared. And approaching, he said: “I bear good news, my lord the king. For today the Lord has judged for you, from the hand of all who had risen up against you.”

18:31  And, behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said: 'Tidings for my lord the king; for YHWH hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.'

31  And, behold, Chusi came up, and said to the king, Let my lord the king hear glad tidings, for the Lord has avenged thee this day upon all them that rose up against thee.

2Sm18:32  But the king said to Hushai, “Is there peace for the boy Absalom?” And responding, Hushai said to him, “May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise against him for evil, be as the boy is.”

18:32  And the king said unto the Cushite: 'Is it well with the young man Absalom?' And the Cushite answered: 'The enemies of my lord the king and all that rise up against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.'

2Sm18:33  And so the king, being greatly saddened, ascended to the upper room of the gate, and he wept. And as he went, he was speaking in this manner: “My son Absalom! Absalom my son! Who can grant to me that I may die on your behalf? Absalom, my son! My son, Absalom!”

32  And the king said to Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, Let your enemies, my lord the king, and all who rise up against you for evil be as that young man is.

18:33  And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, thus he said: 'O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!'

2Sm19:1  Now it was reported to Joab that the king was weeping and mourning for his son.

19:1  And it was told Joab: 'Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom.'

1  And they brought Joab word, saying, Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Abessalom.

2Sm19:2  And so the victory on that day was turned into mourning for all the people. For the people heard it said on that day, “The king is grieving over his son.”

19:2  And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people; for the people heard say that day: 'The king grieveth for his son.'

2Sm19:3  And the people declined to enter the city on that day, in the manner that the people were accustomed to decline if they had turned and fled from battle.

2  And there was mourning that day among all the people; for the people heard that day how the king was grieved for his son.

19:3  And the people got them by stealth that day into the city, as people that are ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.

2Sm19:4  And the king covered his head, and he was crying out in a great voice: “My son, Absalom! Absalom, my son, my son!”

19:4  And the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice: 'O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!'

2Sm19:5  Therefore, Joab, entering to the king in the house, said: “Today you have shamed the faces of all your servants, who saved your life, and the lives of your sons and your daughters, and the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines.

4  But the king covered his face, and cried with a loud voice, saying, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

19:5  And Joab came into the house to the king, and said: 'Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, who this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;

2Sm19:6  You love those who hate you, and you hate those who love you. And you have revealed this day that you have no concern for your leaders and for your servants. And truly, I know now that if Absalom had lived, and if we all had been killed, then it would have pleased you.

19:6  in that thou lovest them that hate thee, and hatest them that love thee. For thou hast declared this day, that princes and servants are nought unto thee; for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.

2Sm19:7  Now then, rise up and go out, and speak so as to make amends to your servants. For I swear to you by the Lord that if you will not go forth, not even one person will be left with you this night. And this will be worse for you than all the evils that have come to you, from your youth even to the present.”

6  Because you have loved your enemies and hated your friends. For you have declared this day that you have neither noblemen nor servants; for this day I perceive that if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead, it would have pleased you better.

19:7  Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak to the heart of thy servants; for I swear by YHWH, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry a man with thee this night; and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that hath befallen thee from thy youth until now.'

7  And now arise, and go forth, and speak comfortably to thy servants; for I have sworn by the Lord, that unless thou wilt go forth to-day, there shall not a man remain with thee this night: and know for thyself, this thing will indeed be evil to thee beyond all the evil that has come upon thee from thy youth until now.

2Sm19:8  Therefore, the king rose up, and he sat at the gate. And it was announced to all the people that the king was sitting at the gate. And the entire multitude went before the king. But Israel fled to their own tents.

19:8  Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, saying: 'Behold, the king doth sit in the gate'; and all the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his tent.

2Sm19:9  And all the people were conflicted, in all the tribes of Israel, saying: “The king has freed us from the hand of our enemies. He himself saved us from the hand of the Philistines. But now he flees from the land for the sake of Absalom.

19:9  And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying: 'The king delivered us out of the hand of our enemies, and he saved us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land from Absalom.

9  And all the people disputed among all the tribes of Israel, saying, King David delivered us from all our enemies, and he rescued us from the hand of the Philistines: and now he has fled from the land, and from his kingdom, and from Abessalom.

2Sm19:10  But Absalom, whom we anointed over us, has died in the war. How long will you be silent, and not lead back the king?”

19:10  And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now, therefore, why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?'

10  And Abessalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle: and now why are ye silent about bringing back the king? And the word of all Israel came to the king.

2Sm19:11  Then truly, king David sent to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, saying: “Speak to those greater by birth of Judah, saying: ‘Why have you arrived last to lead back the king into his house? (For the talk in all of Israel had reached the king in his house.)

19:11  And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying: 'Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying: Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house?--For the speech of all Israel was come to the king, to bring him to his house.--

2Sm19:12  You are my brothers; you are my bone and my flesh. Why are you the last to lead back the king?’

11  Come, therefore, let us bring him back to his house. And the words of the Israelites came to the king.

19:12  Ye are my brethren, ye are my bone and my flesh; wherefore then should ye be the last to bring back the king?

2Sm19:13  And say to Amasa: ‘Are you not my bone and my flesh? May God do these things, and may he add these other things, if you will not be the leader of the military in my sight, for all time, in the place of Joab.’ ”

12  And the king said to them, You are my brethren and my flesh and my bones, why then are you the last to return to the king?

19:13  And say ye to Amasa: Art thou not my bone and my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.'

2Sm19:14  And he inclined the heart of all the men of Judah, as if one man. And they sent to the king, saying, “Return, you and all your servants.”

13  And he said to Amasa, Behold, you are my flesh and my bone. God do so to me, and more also, if you are not commander of my army permanently instead of Joab.

19:14  And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent unto the king: 'Return thou, and all thy servants.'

2Sm19:15  And the king returned. And he went as far as the Jordan, and all of Judah went as far as Gilgal, so as to meet the king, and to lead him across the Jordan.

14  And he swayed the heart of all the men of Judah as one man; so that they sent word to the king, saying, Return you and all your servants.

19:15  So the king returned, and came to the Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to bring the king over the Jordan.

15  And the king returned, and came as far s Jordan. And the men of Juda came to Galgala on their way to meet the king, to cause the king to pass over Jordan.

2Sm19:16  And Shimei, the son of Gera, the son of Benjamin, from Bahurim, hurried and descended with the men of Judah to meet king David,

19:16  And Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, who was of Bahurim, made haste and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.

16  And Semei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, of Baurim, hasted and went down with the men of Juda to meet king David.

2Sm19:17  with one thousand men from Benjamin, and with Ziba, the servant from the house of Saul. And with him were his fifteen sons and twenty servants. And going into the Jordan,

19:17  And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him. And they rushed into the Jordan before the king.

2Sm19:18  they crossed the fords before the king, so that they might lead across the house of the king, and might act in accord with his order. Then, Shimei, the son of Gera, prostrating himself before the king after he had now gone across the Jordan,

17  And Ziba the servant of Saul and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him crossed over and constructed a bridge over the Jordan before the king.

19:18  And the ferryboat passed to and fro to bring over the king's household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, when he would go over the Jordan.

18  and they performed the service of bringing the king over; and there went over a ferry-boat to remove the household of the king, and to do that which was right in his eyes. And Semei the son of Gera fell on his face before the king, as he went over Jordan;

2Sm19:19  said to him: “May you not impute to me, my lord, the iniquity, nor call to mind the injuries, of your servant in the day that you, my lord the king, departed from Jerusalem. And may you not store it up in your heart, O king.

19:19  And he said unto the king: 'Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did iniquitously the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.

19  and said to the king, Let not my lord now impute iniquity, and remember not all the iniquity of thy servant in the day in which my lord went out from Jerusalem, so that the king should mind it.

2Sm19:20  For as your servant, I acknowledge my sin. And for this reason, today, I arrive as the first from all the house of Joseph, and I descend to meet my lord the king.”

19:20  For thy servant doth know that I have sinned; therefore, behold, I am come this day the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.'

2Sm19:21  Yet truly, Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, responding, said, “Should not Shimei, because of these words, be killed, since he cursed the Christ of the Lord?”

19:21  But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said: 'Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed YHWH'S anointed?'

21  And Abessai the son of Saruia answered and said, Shall not Semei therefore be put to death, because he cursed the Lord’s anointed?

2Sm19:22  And David said: “What is it to me and to all of you, O sons of Zeruiah? Why are you acting toward me this day like Satan? Why should any man be put to death on this day in Israel? Or do you not know that today I have been made king over Israel?”

19:22  And David said: 'What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?'

2Sm19:23  And the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And he swore to him.

19:23  And the king said unto Shimei: 'Thou shalt not die.' And the king swore unto him.

2Sm19:24  And Mephibosheth, the son of Saul, descended to meet the king, with unwashed his feet and uncut beard. And he had not washed his garments from the day that the king had departed, until the day of his return in peace.

23  Then the king said to Shimei. You shall not die. And the king swore to him.

19:24  And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king; and he had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace.

2Sm19:25  And when he had met the king at Jerusalem, the king said to him, “Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?”

19:25  And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him: 'Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?'

2Sm19:26  And in response, he said: “My lord the king, my servant spurned me. And I, your servant, spoke to him so that he might saddle a donkey for me, and I might climb upon it and go with the king. For I, your servant, am lame.

19:26  And he answered: 'My lord, O king, my servant deceived me; for thy servant said: I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go with the king; because thy servant is lame.

2Sm19:27  Moreover, he also accused me, your servant, to you, my lord the king. But you, my lord the king, are like an Angel of God. Do whatever is pleasing to you.

19:27  And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God; do therefore what is good in thine eyes.

2Sm19:28  For my father’s house was deserving of nothing but death before my lord the king. Yet you have placed me, your servant, among the guests of your table. Therefore, what just complaint might I have? Or what else can I cry out to the king?”

19:28  For all my father's house were deserving of death at the hand of my lord the king; yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet? or why should I cry any more unto the king?'

2Sm19:29  Then the king said to him: “Why are you still speaking? What I have spoken is fixed. You and Ziba shall divide the possessions.”

28  For all of my father's house were worthy of death before my lord the king; yet you counted your servant among those who eat at your table. Now therefore I cannot justify myself, neither speak before my lord the king.

19:29  And the king said unto him: 'Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I say: Thou and Ziba divide the land.'

2Sm19:30  And Mephibosheth responded to the king, “But now let him take it all, since my lord the king has been returned peacefully into his own house.”

29  And the king said to him, You have spoken more than enough, I have already commanded that you and Ziba shall divide the fields.

19:30  And Mephibosheth said unto the king: 'Yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come in peace unto his own house.'

2Sm19:31  Likewise, Barzillai the Gileadite, descending from Rogelim, led the king across the Jordan, having prepared also to follow him beyond the river.

19:31  And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim; and he passed on to Jordan with the king, to bring him on the way over the Jordan.

31  And Berzelli the Galaadite came down from Rogellim, and crossed over Jordan with the king, that he might conduct the king over Jordan.

2Sm19:32  Now Barzillai the Gileadite was very old, that is, eighty years old. And he provided the king with sustenance when he was staying at the encampment. For indeed, he was an exceedingly rich man.

19:32  Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old; and he had provided the king with sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.

32  And Berzelli was a very old man, eighty years old; and he had maintained the king when he dwelt in Manaim; for he was a very great man.

2Sm19:33  And so the king said to Barzillai, “Come with me, so that you may rest securely with me in Jerusalem.”

19:33  And the king said unto Barzillai: 'Come thou over with me, and I will sustain thee with me in Jerusalem.'

2Sm19:34  And Barzillai said to the king: “How many days remain in the years of my life, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?

19:34  And Barzillai said unto the king: 'How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?

2Sm19:35  Today I am eighty years old. Are my senses quick to discern sweet and bitter? Or is food and drink able to delight your servant? Or can I still hear the voice of men and women singers? Why should your servant be a burden to my lord the king?

19:35  I am this day fourscore years old; can I discern between good and bad? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?

2Sm19:36  I, your servant, shall procede a little ways from the Jordan with you. I am not in need of this recompense.

19:36  Thy servant would but just go over the Jordan with the king; and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?

2Sm19:37  But I beg you that I, your servant, may be returned and may die in my own city, and may be buried beside the sepulcher of my father and my mother. But there is your servant Chimham; let him go with you, my lord the king. And do for him whatever seems good to you.”

36  Your servant can hardly cross the Jordan with my lord the king; let not my lord the king recompense me with such a reward.

19:37  Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back, that I may die in mine own city, by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.'

2Sm19:38  And so the king said to him: “Let Chimham cross over with me, and I will do for him whatever will be pleasing to you. And all that you ask of me, you shall obtain.”

37  Let your servant turn back again, that I may die in my own city and be buried beside the grave of my father and my mother. But behold here is with you your servant Bimham my son; let him go over with my lord the king, and do you to him what seems good in your sight.

19:38  And the king answered: 'Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee; and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.'

2Sm19:39  And when the entire people and the king had crossed over the Jordan, the king kissed Barzillai, and he blessed him. And he returned to his own place.

2Sm19:41  And so, all the men of Israel, running to the king, said to him: “Why have our brothers, the men of Judah, stolen you away. And why have they led the king and his house across the Jordan, and all the men of David with him?”

19:41  And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king: 'Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and brought the king, and his household, over the Jordan, and all David's men with him?'

2Sm19:42  And all the men of Judah responded to the men of Israel: “Because the king is nearer to me. Why are you angry over this matter? Have we eaten anything belonging to the king, or have any gifts been given to us?”

41  And, behold, the men of Israel came to the king and said to him, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen you away and have brought you over the Jordan and all your household and all men of Judah with you?

19:42  And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel: 'Because the king is near of kin to us; wherefore then are ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king's cost? or hath any gift been given us?'

42  And all the men of Juda answered the men of Israel, and said, Because the king is near of kin to us: and why were you thus angry concerning this matter? have we indeed eaten of the king’s food? or has he given us a gift, or has he sent us a portion?

2Sm19:43  And the men of Israel responded to the men of Judah, and said: “I have the greater amount, ten parts, with the king, and so David belongs to me more so than to you. Why have you caused me injury, and why was it not announced to me first, so that I might lead back my king?” But the men of Judah answered more firmly than the men of Israel.

19:43  And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said: 'We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye; why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king?' And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

2Sm20:1  And it happened that there was, in that place, a man of Belial, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a man of Benjamin. And he sounded the trumpet, and he said: “There is no portion for us in David, nor any inheritance in the son of Jesse. Return to your own tents, O Israel.”

20:2  So all the men of Israel went up from following David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah did cleave unto their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.

2  And all the men of Israel went up from following David after Sabee the son of Bochori: but the men of Juda adhered to their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem.

2Sm20:3  And when the king had entered his house at Jerusalem, he took the ten women concubines, whom he had left behind to care for the house, and he put them into custody, allowing them provisions. But he did not enter to them. Instead, they were enclosed, even until the day of their deaths, living as widows.

20:3  And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward, and provided them with sustenance, but went not in unto them. So they were shut up unto the day of their death, in widowhood, with their husband alive.

3  And David went into his house at Jerusalem: and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and he put them in a place of custody, and maintained them, and went not in to them; and they were kept living as widows, till the day of their death.

2Sm20:4  Then the king said to Amasa, “Summon to me all the men of Judah on the third day, and you shall be present also.”

20:4  Then said the king to Amasa: 'Call me the men of Judah together within three days, and be thou here present.'

4  And the king said to Amessai, Call to me the men of Juda for three days, and do thou be present here.

2Sm20:5  Therefore, Amasa went away, so that he might summon Judah. But he delayed beyond the agreed time that the king had appointed to him.

20:5  So Amasa went to call the men of Judah together; but he tarried longer than the set time which he had appointed him.

5  And Amessai went to call Juda, and delayed beyond the time which David appointed him.

2Sm20:6  And David said to Abishai: “Now Sheba, the son of Bichri, will afflict us more so than Absalom did. Therefore, take the servants of your lord, and pursue him, otherwise he may find fortified cities, and escape from us.”

20:6  And David said to Abishai: 'Now will Sheba the son of Bichri do us more harm than did Absalom; take thou thy lord's servants, and pursue after him, lest he get him fortified cities, and escape out of our sight.'

6  And David said to Amessai, Now shall Sabee the son of Bochori do us more harm than Abessalom: now then take thou with thee the servants of thy lord, and follow after him, lest he find for himself strong cities, so will he blind our eyes.

2Sm20:7  And so, the men of Joab departed with him, along with the Cherethites and the Pelethites. And all the able-bodied men went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba, the son of Bichri.

20:7  And there went out after him Joab's men, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men; and they went out of Jerusalem, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

2Sm20:8  And when they were beside the great stone, which is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was wearing a close-fitting coat of equal length with his garment. And over these, he was girded with a sword hanging down to his thigh, in a scabbard which was made so that the sword could be removed with the least motion, and then strike.

20:8  When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. And Joab was girded with his apparel of war that he had put on, and thereon was a girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in the sheath thereof; and as he went forth it fell out.

8  And they were by the great stone that is in Gabaon: and Amessai went in before them: and Joab had upon him a military cloak over his apparel, and over it he was girded with a dagger fastened upon his loins in its scabbard: and the dagger came out, it even came out and fell.

2Sm20:9  Then Joab said to Amasa, “Be well, my brother.” And he held Amasa by the chin with his right hand, as if to kiss him.

20:9  And Joab said to Amasa: 'Is it well with thee, my brother?' And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.

2Sm20:10  But Amasa did not notice the sword that Joab had. And he struck him in the side, and his intestines poured out to the ground. And he did not inflict a second wound, and he died. Then Joab and his brother Abishai pursued Sheba, the son of Bichri.

20:10  But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab's hand; so he smote him therewith in the groin, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. And Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.

10  And Amessai observed not the dagger that was in the hand of Joab: and Joab smote him with it on the loins, and his bowels were shed out upon the ground, and he did not repeat the blow, and he died: and Joab and Abessai his brother pursued after Sabee the son of Bochori.

2Sm20:11  Meanwhile, certain men, from the company of Joab, when they had stopped beside the dead body of Amasa, said: “Behold, the one who wished to be in the place of Joab, the companion of David.”

20:11  And there stood by him one of Joab's young men, and said: 'He that favoureth Joab, and he that is for David let him follow Joab.'

2Sm20:12  Now Amasa was covered with blood, and was lying in the middle of the road. A certain man saw this, with all the people standing nearby to look at him, and he removed Amasa from the road into a field. And he covered him with a garment, so that those passing by would not stop because of him.

11  And one of Joab's men went and stood by Amasa, and said to those who passed by, To whom do you belong? Are you of the men of David who are after Joab?

20:12  And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a garment over him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still.

12  And Amessai was weltering in blood in the midst of the way. And a man saw that all the people stood still; and he removed Amessai out of the path into a field, and he cast a garment upon him, because he saw every one that came to him standing still.

2Sm20:13  Then, when he had been removed from the road, all the men continued on, following Joab in the pursuit of Sheba, the son of Bichri.

20:13  When he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

13  And when he was quickly removed from the road, every man of Israel passed after Joab to pursue after Sabee the son of Bochori.

2Sm20:14  Now he had passed through all the tribes of Israel into Abel and Bethmaacah. And all the elect men had gathered together to him.

20:14  And he went through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel, and to Beth-maacah, and all the Berites; and they were gathered together, and went in also after him.

2Sm20:15  And so, they went and besieged him at Abel and Bethmaacah. And they surrounded the city with siege works, and the city was blockaded. Then the entire crowd who were with Joab strove to destroy the walls.

14  And they went through all the tribes of Israel to Abel and to Beth-maachah and to Berin; and they went after him.

20:15  And they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah, and they cast up a mound against the city, and it stood in the moat; and all the people that were with Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.

2Sm20:16  And a wise woman exclaimed from the city: “Listen, listen, and say to Joab: Draw near, and I will speak with you.”

20:16  Then cried a wise woman out of the city: 'Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto Joab: Come near hither, that I may speak with thee.'

16  And a wise woman cried from the wall, and said, Hear, hear; say, I pray ye, to Joab, Draw near hither, and I will speak to him.

2Sm20:17  And when he had drawn near to her, she said to him, “Are you Joab?” And he responded, “I am.” And she spoke in this way to him, “Listen to the words of your handmaid.” He responded, “I am listening.”

20:17  And he came near unto her; and the woman said: 'Art thou Joab?' And he answered: 'I am.' Then she said unto him: 'Hear the words of thy handmaid.' And he answered: 'I do hear.'

2Sm20:18  And again she spoke: “A word was said in the old proverb, ‘Those who would inquire, let them inquire in Abel.’ And so they would reach a conclusion.

20:18  Then she spoke, saying: 'They were wont to speak in old time, saying: They shall surely ask counsel at Abel; and so they ended the matter.

18  And she spoke, saying, Of old time they said thus, Surely one was asked in Abel, and Dan, whether the faithful in Israel failed in what they purposed; they will surely ask in Abel, even in like manner, whether they have failed.

2Sm20:19  Am I not the one who responds with the truth in Israel? And yet you are seeking to overthrow the city, and to overturn a mother in Israel! Why would you cast down the inheritance of the Lord?”

20:19  We are of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel; seekest thou to destroy a city and a mother in Israel? why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of YHWH?'

2Sm20:20  And responding, Joab said: “May this be far, may this be far from me! May I not cast down, and may I not demolish.

20:20  And Joab answered and said: 'Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy.

2Sm20:21  The matter is not as you said. Rather, a man from mount Ephraim, Sheba, the son of Bichri, by name, has lifted up his hand against king David. Deliver him alone, and we will withdraw from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head will be thrown down to you from the wall.’

20:21  The matter is not so; but a man of the hill-country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David; deliver him only, and I will depart from the city.' And the woman said unto Joab: 'Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.'

21  Is not the case thus, that a man of mount Ephraim, Sabee, son of Bochori by name, has even lifted up his hand against king David? Give him only to me, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said to Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.

2Sm20:22  Therefore, she entered to all the people, and she spoke to them wisely. And they cut off the head of Sheba, the son of Bichri, and they threw it down to Joab. And he sounded the trumpet, and they withdrew from the city, each one to his own tent. But Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

20:22  Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. And he blew the horn, and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.

22  And the woman went in to all the people, and she spoke to all the city in her wisdom; and they took off the head of Sabee the son of Bochori; and took it away and threw it to Joab: and he blew the trumpet, and the people separated from the city away from him, every man to his tent: and Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

2Sm20:23  Thus Joab was over the entire army of Israel. And Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was over the Cerethites and Phelethites.

20:23  Now Joab was over all the host of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites;

2Sm20:24  Yet truly, Adoram was over the tributes. And Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, was the keeper of records.

23  Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the freedmen and the laborers,

20:24  and Adoram was over the levy; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder;

2Sm20:25  Now Sheva was the scribe. And truly Zadok and Abiathar were the priests.

24  And Adoniram was in charge of the tribute, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder,

20:25  and Sheva was scribe; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests;

2Sm20:26  But Ira, the Jairite, was the priest of David.

20:26  and Ira also the Jairite was chief minister unto David.

26  Moreover Iras the son of Iarin was priest to David.

2Sm21:1  And a famine occurred, during the days of David, for three years continuously. And David consulted the oracle of the Lord. And the Lord said: “This is because of Saul, and his house of bloodshed. For he killed the Gibeonites.”

21:1  And there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David sought the face of YHWH. And the YHWH said: 'It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he put to death the Gibeonites.'

2Sm21:2  Therefore, the king, calling for the Gibeonites, spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not of the sons of Israel, but were the remnant of the Amorites. And the sons of Israel had sworn an oath to them, but Saul wished to strike them in zeal, as if on behalf of the sons of Israel and Judah.

1  THEN there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David inquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered. It is because of Saul and because of his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.

21:2  And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them--now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them; and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah--

2  And King David called the Gabaonites, and said to them; —(now the Gabaonites are not the children of Israel, but are of the remnant of the Amorite, and the children of Israel had sworn to them: but Saul sought to smite them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Juda.)

2Sm21:3  Therefore, David said to the Gibeonites: “What shall I do for you? And what shall be your satisfaction, so that you may bless the inheritance of the Lord?”

21:3  and David said unto the Gibeonites: 'What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of YHWH?'

2Sm21:4  And the Gibeonites said to him: “There is no quarrel for us over silver or gold, but against Saul and against his house. And we do not desire that any man of Israel be put to death.” The king said to them, “Then what do you wish that I should do for you?”

3  Wherefore David said to the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? And with what shall I make an atonement to you, that you may bless the heritage of the LORD?

21:4  And the Gibeonites said unto him: 'It is no matter of silver or gold between us and Saul, or his house; neither is it for us to put any man to death in Israel.' And he said: 'What say ye that I should do for you?'

4  And the Gabaonites said to him, We have no question about silver or gold with Saul and with his house; and there is no man for us to put to death in Israel.

2Sm21:5  And they said to the king: “The man who unjustly afflicted and oppressed us, we ought to destroy in such manner that not even one of his stock may be left behind in all the parts of Israel.

21:5  And they said unto the king: 'The man that consumed us, and that devised against us, so that we have been destroyed from remaining in any of the borders of Israel,

5  And he said, What say ye? speak, and I will do it for you. And they said to the king, The man who would have made an end of us, and persecuted us, who plotted against us to destroy us, let us utterly destroy him, so that he shall have no standing in all the coasts of Israel.

2Sm21:6  Let seven men from his sons be given to us, so that we may crucify them to the Lord in Gibeon of Saul, formerly the chosen place of the Lord.” And the king said, “I will give them.”

21:6  let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto YHWH in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of the YHWH.' And the king said: 'I will deliver them.'

2Sm21:7  But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the oath of the Lord which had been made between David and Jonathan, the son of Saul.

21:7  But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of YHWH'S oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

2Sm21:8  And so the king took the two sons of Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah, whom she bore to Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth, and the five sons of Michal, the daughter of Saul, whom she conceived of Adriel, the son of Barzillai, who was from Meholath,

21:8  But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bore unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she bore to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite;

2Sm21:9  and he gave them into the hands of the Gibeonites. And they crucified them on a hill in the sight of the Lord. And these seven fell together in the first days of the harvest, when the barley is beginning to be reaped.

21:9  and he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the mountain before YHWH, and they fell all seven together; and they were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, at the beginning of barley harvest.

9  And he gave them into the hand of the Gabaonites, and they hanged them up to the sun in the mountain before the lord: and they fell, even the seven together: moreover they were put to death in the days of harvest at the commencement, in the beginning of barley-harvest.

2Sm21:10  Then Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah, taking a haircloth, spread it under herself on a rock, from the beginning of the harvest until water dropped from heaven upon them. And she did not permit the birds to tear them by day, nor the beasts by night.

21:10  And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water was poured upon them from heaven; and she suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.

2Sm21:11  And it was reported to David what Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.

21:11  And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.

11  And it was told David what Respha the daughter of Aia the concubine of Saul had done, and they were faint, and Dan, the son of Joa of the offspring of the giants overtook them.

2Sm21:12  And David went and took the bones of Saul, and the bones of his son Jonathan, from the men of Jabesh Gilead, who had stolen them from the street of Bethshan, where the Philistines had suspended them after they had slain Saul at Gilboa.

21:12  And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh-gilead, who had stolen them from the broad place of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hanged them, in the day that the Philistines slew Saul in Gilboa;

2Sm21:13  And he brought the bones of Saul, and the bones of his son Jonathan, from there. And they collected the bones of those who had been crucified.

21:13  and he brought up from thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son; and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged.

2Sm21:14  And they buried them with the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan, in the land of Benjamin, to the side of the sepulcher of his father Kish. And they did all that the king had instructed. And after these things, God showed favor again to the land.

21:14  And they buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the country of Benjamin in Zela, in the sepulchre of Kish his father; and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was entreated for the land.

14  And they buried the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son, and the bones of them that had been hanged, in the land of Benjamin in the hill, in the sepulchre of Cis his father; and they did all things that the king commanded: and after this God hearkened to the prayers of the land.

2Sm21:15  Then the Philistines again undertook a battle against Israel. And David descended, and his servants with him, and they fought against the Philistines. But when David grew faint,

21:15  And the Philistines had war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines; and David waxed faint.

2Sm21:16  Ishbibenob, who was of the ancestry of Arapha, the iron of whose spear weighed three hundred ounces, who had been girded with a new sword, strove to strike down David.

15  Moreover the Philistines were again at war with Israel; and David went down and his servants with him to fight against the Philistines;

21:16  And Ishbibenob, who was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear was three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with new armour, thought to have slain David.

2Sm21:17  And Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, defended him, and striking the Philistine, he killed him. Then David’s men swore an oath to him, saying, “You shall no longer go out to war with us, lest you extinguish the lamp of Israel.”

16  But David, Joab, and Abishai were afraid of a giant, the weight of whose breastplate was three hundred shekels of brass, and who was girded with a new sword, and had threatened to slay David.

21:17  But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David swore unto him, saying: 'Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the lamp of Israel.'

17  And Abessa the son of Saruia helped him and smote the Philistine, and slew him. Then the men of David swore, saying, Thou shalt not any longer go out with us to battle, and thou shalt not quench the lamp of Israel.

2Sm21:18  Also, a second war occurred in Gob against the Philistines. Then Sibbecai from Hushah struck down Saph, from the stock of Arapha, of the ancestry of the giants.

21:18  And it came to pass after this, that there was again war with the Philistines at Gob; then Sibbecai the Hushathite slew Saph, who was of the sons of the giant.

18  And after this there was a battle again with the Philistines in Geth: then Sebocha the Astatothite slew Seph of the progeny of Rapha.

2Sm21:19  Then there was a third war in Gob against the Philistines, in which Adeodatus, a son of the forest, a weaver from Bethlehem, struck down Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like the beam used by a cloth maker.

21:19  And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob; and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Beth-lehemite slew Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

2Sm21:20  A fourth battle was in Gath. In that place, there was a lofty man, who had six digits on each hand and each foot, that is, twenty-four in all, and he was from the origins of Arapha.

21:20  And there was again war at Gath, where was a champion, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.

20  And there was yet a battle in Geth: and there was a man of stature, and the fingers of his hands and the toes of his feet were six on each, four and twenty in number: and he also was born to Rapha.

2Sm21:21  And he blasphemed Israel. So Jonathan, the son of Shimei, the brother of David, struck him down.

21:21  And when he taunted Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea David's brother slew him.

21  And he defied Israel, and Jonathan son of Semei brother of David, smote him.

2Sm21:22  These four men were born of Arapha in Gath, and they fell by the hand of David and his servants.

21:22  These four were born to the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

2Sm22:1  And David spoke to the Lord the words of this verse, in the day that the Lord freed him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.

22:1  And David spoke unto YHWH the words of this song in the day that the YHWH delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul;

2Sm22:2  And he said: “The Lord is my rock, and my strength, and my Savior.

22:2  and he said: YHWH is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

2Sm22:3  I will hope in him. God is my strong one, my shield, and the horn of my salvation. He lifts me up, and he is my refreshment. You, O my Savior, will free me from iniquity.

2  And he said: I will love thee, O LORD my strength and my trust; the LORD is my strength and my fortress and my deliverer,

22:3  The God who is my rock, in Him I take refuge; my shield, and my horn of salvation, my high tower, and my refuge; my saviour, Thou savest me from violence.

3  my God; he shall be to me my guard, I will trust in him: he is my protector, and the horn of my salvation, my helper, and my sure refuge; thou shalt save me from the unjust man.

2Sm22:4  I will call upon the Lord, who is praiseworthy; and I will be saved from my enemies.

22:4  Praised, I cry, is YHWH, and I am saved from mine enemies.

4  I will call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised, and I shall be saved from my enemies.

2Sm22:5  For the pangs of death have encircled me. The torrents of Belial have terrified me.

22:5  For the waves of Death compassed me. The floods of Belial assailed me.

2Sm22:6  The ropes of Hell have encompassed me. The snares of death have intercepted me.

5  For the pangs of death have compassed me, the torrents of ungodly men made me afraid;

22:6  The cords of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of Death confronted me.

2Sm22:7  In my tribulation, I will call upon the Lord, and I will cry out to my God. And he will heed my voice from his temple, and my outcry will reach his ears.

6  The pangs of Sheol compassed me about; the snares of death lay ahead of me;

22:7  In my distress I called upon YHWH, yea, I called unto my God; and out of His temple He heard my voice, and my cry did enter into His ears.

7  When I am afflicted I will call upon the Lord, and will cry to my God, and he shall hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry shalt come into his ears.

2Sm22:8  The earth was shaken, and it quaked. The foundations of the mountains were struck together and violently shaken, because he was angry with them.

22:8  Then the earth did shake and quake, the foundations of heaven did tremble; they were shaken, because He was wroth.

8  And the earth was troubled and quaked, and the foundations of heaven were confounded and torn asunder, because the Lord was wroth with them.

2Sm22:9  Smoke ascends from his nostrils, and fire from his mouth will devour; coals have been kindled by it.

22:9  Smoke arose up in His nostrils, and fire out of His mouth did devour; coals flamed forth from Him.

9  There went up a smoke in his wrath, and fire out of his mouth devours: coals were kindled at it.

2Sm22:10  He bent down the heavens, and it descended; and a fog was beneath his feet.

22:10  He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and thick darkness was under His feet.

2Sm22:11  And he climbed upon the cherubim, and he flew; and he slid upon the wings of the wind.

22:11  And He rode upon a cherub, and did fly; yea, He was seen upon the wings of the wind.

2Sm22:12  He set darkness as a hiding place around himself, with waters sifted from the clouds of the heavens.

22:12  And He made darkness pavilions round about Him, gathering of waters, thick clouds of the skies.

12  And he made darkness his hiding-place; his tabernacle round about him was the darkness of waters, he condensed it with the clouds of the air.

2Sm22:13  By means of the brightness of his glance, coals of fire were kindled.

22:13  At the brightness before Him coals of fire flamed forth.

2Sm22:14  The Lord will thunder from heaven; and the Most High will utter his voice.

13  Out of the brightness of his shelter he made his clouds hail and coals of fire.

22:14  YHWH thundered from heaven, and the Most High gave forth His voice.

14  The Lord thundered out of heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice.

2Sm22:15  He shot arrows, and he scattered them; lightning, and he consumed them.

22:15  And He sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them.

15  And he sent forth arrows, and scattered them, and he flashed lightning, and dismayed them.

2Sm22:16  And the overflow of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the globe were revealed, at the rebuke of the Lord, at the exhale of the breath of his fury.

22:16  And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were laid bare by the rebuke of YHWH, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils.

2Sm22:17  He sent from on high, and he took me up. And he drew me out of many waters.

16  Then the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were uncovered, at thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of thine anger.

22:17  He sent from on high, He took me; He drew me out of many waters;

2Sm22:18  He freed me from my most powerful enemy and from those who had hated me. For they were too strong for me.

22:18  He delivered me from mine enemy most strong, from them that hated me, for they were too mighty for me.

2Sm22:19  He went before me in the day of my affliction, and the Lord became my firmament.

22:19  They confronted me in the day of my calamity; but YHWH was a stay unto me.

2Sm22:20  And he led me out to a wide-open place. He freed me, because I was pleasing to him.

22:20  He brought me forth also into a large place; He delivered me, because He delighted in me.

2Sm22:21  The Lord will reward me according to my justice. And he will repay me according to the cleanness of my hands.

20  He relieved me from my distress; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

22:21  YHWH rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands hath He recompensed me.

21  And the Lord recompensed me according to my righteousness; even according to the purity of my hands did he recompense me.

2Sm22:22  For I have kept to the ways of the Lord, and I have not acted impiously before my God.

22:22  For I have kept the ways of YHWH, and have not wickedly departed from my God.

22  Because, I kept the ways of the Lord, and did not wickedly depart from my God.

2Sm22:23  For all his judgments are in my sight. And I have not removed his precepts from me.

22:23  For all His ordinances were before me; and as for His statutes, I did not depart from them.

2Sm22:24  And I shall be perfect with him. And I shall guard myself from my own iniquity.

22:24  And I was single-hearted toward Him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity.

2Sm22:25  And the Lord will recompense me according to my justice, and according to the cleanness of my hands in the sight of his eyes.

24  I was blameless before him, and have kept myself from my sin.

22:25  Therefore hath YHWH recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in His eyes.

25  And the Lord will recompense me according to my righteousness, and according to the purity of my hands in his eye-sight.

2Sm22:26  With the holy one, you will be holy, and with the strong one, you will be perfect.

22:26  With the merciful Thou dost show Thyself merciful, with the upright man Thou dost show Thyself upright,

26  With the holy thou wilt be holy, and with the perfect man thou will be perfect,

2Sm22:27  With the elect one, you will be elect, and with the perverse one, you will be perverse.

22:27  With the pure Thou dost show myself pure; and with the crooked Thou dost show Thyself subtle.

27  and with the excellent thou wilt be excellent, and with the froward thou will be froward.

2Sm22:28  And you will bring to salvation the poor people, and you will humble the exalted with your eyes.

22:28  And the afflicted people Thou dost save; but Thine eyes are upon the haughty, that Thou mayest humble them.

28  And thou wilt save the poor people, and wilt bring down the eyes of the haughty.

2Sm22:29  For you are my lamp, O Lord. And you, O Lord, will illuminate my darkness.

22:29  For Thou art my lamp, O YHWH; and YHWH doth lighten my darkness.

29  For thou, Lord, art my lamp, and the Lord shall shine forth to me in my darkness.

2Sm22:30  For in you, I will run girded. In my God, I will leap over the wall.

22:30  For by Thee I run upon a troop; by my God do I scale a wall.

30  For by thee shall I run as a girded man, and by my God shall I leap over a wall.

2Sm22:31  God, his way is immaculate; the eloquence of the Lord is an exacting fire. He is the shield of all who hope in him.

22:31  As for God, His way is perfect; the word of YHWH is tried; He is a shield unto all them that take refuge in Him.

31  As for the Mighty One, his way is blameless: the word of the Lord is strong and tried in the fire: he is a protector to all that put their trust in him.

2Sm22:32  Who is God except the Lord? And who is strong except our God?

22:32  For who is God, save YHWH? and who is a Rock, save our God?

2Sm22:33  God, he has girded me with fortitude, and he has made my way perfect

32  For there is no God except the LORD. And there is no one who is mighty but our God.

22:33  The God who is my strong fortress, and who letteth my way go forth straight;

33  It is the Mighty One who strengthens me with might, and has prepared my way without fault.

2Sm22:34  making my feet like the feet of the stag, and stationing me upon my exalted places,

22:34  Who maketh my feet like hinds', and setteth me upon my high places;

34  He makes my feet like hart’s feet, and sets me upon the high places.

2Sm22:35  teaching my hands to do battle, and making my arms like a bow of brass.

22:35  Who traineth my hands for war, so that mine arms do bend a bow of brass.

35  He teaches my hands to war, and has broken a brazen bow by my arm.

2Sm22:36  You have given me the shield of your salvation. And your mildness has multiplied me.

22:36  Thou hast also given me Thy shield of salvation; and Thy condescension hath made me great.

36  And thou hast given me the shield of my salvation, and thy propitious dealing has increased me,

2Sm22:37  You will enlarge my steps under me, and my ankles will not fail.

22:37  Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, and my feet have not slipped.

37  so as to make room under me for my going, and my legs did not totter.

2Sm22:38  I will pursue my enemies, and crush them. And I will not turn back, until I consume them.

22:38  I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; neither did I turn back till they were consumed.

38  I will pursue my enemies, and will utterly destroy them; and I will not turn again till I have consumed them.

2Sm22:39  I will consume them and break them apart, so that they cannot rise up; they will fall under my feet.

22:39  And I have consumed them, and smitten them through, that they cannot arise; yea, they are fallen under my feet.

39  And I will crush them, and they shall not rise; and they shall fall under my feet.

2Sm22:40  You have girded me with strength for the battle. Those who resisted me, you have bent down under me.

22:40  For Thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle; Thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.

2Sm22:41  You have caused my enemies to turn their back to me; they have hatred for me, and I shall destroy them.

22:41  Thou hast also made mine enemies turn their backs unto me; yea, them that hate me, that I might cut them off.

41  And thou hast caused mine enemies to flee before me, even them that hated me, and thou hast slain them.

2Sm22:42  They will cry out, and there will be no one to save; to the Lord, and he will not heed them.

22:42  They looked, but there was none to save; even unto YHWH, but He answered them not.

42  They shall cry, and there shall be no helper; to the Lord, but he hearkens not to them.

2Sm22:43  I will wipe them away like the dust of the earth. I will break them apart and crush them, like the mud of the streets.

22:43  Then did I beat them small as the dust of the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the streets, and did tread them down.

2Sm22:44  You will save me from the contradictions of my people. You will preserve me to be the head of the Gentiles; a people I do not know shall serve me.

43  I shall beat them as small as the dust which is carried by the wind; I shall tread upon them as the mire of the streets.

22:44  Thou also hast delivered me from the contentions of my people; Thou hast kept me to be the head of the nations; a people whom I have not known serve me.

2Sm22:45  The sons of foreigners, who will resist me, at the hearing of the ear they will be obedient to me.

22:45  The sons of the stranger dwindle away before me; as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.

2Sm22:46  The foreigners flowed away, but they will be drawn together in their anguishes.

22:46  The sons of the stranger fade away, and come halting out of their close places.

2Sm22:47  The Lord lives, and my God is blessed. And the strong God of my salvation shall be exalted.

46  Strangers shall halt and be restrained from their ways.

22:47  YHWH liveth, and blessed be my Rock; and exalted be the God, my Rock of salvation;

47  The Lord lives, and blessed be my guardian, and my God, my strong keeper, shall be exalted.

2Sm22:48  God gives me vindication, and he casts down the peoples under me.

22:48  Even the God that executeth vengeance for me, and bringeth down peoples under me,

48  The Lord who avenges me is strong, chastening the nations under me,

2Sm22:49  He leads me away from my enemies, and he lifts me up from those who resist me. You will free me from the iniquitous man.

22:49  And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies; yea, Thou liftest me up above them that rise up against me; Thou deliverest me from the violent man.

2Sm22:50  Because of this, I will confess to you, O Lord, among the Gentiles, and I will sing to your name

22:50  Therefore I will give thanks unto Thee, O YHWH, among the nations, and will sing praises unto Thy name.

50  Therefore will I confess to thee, O Lord, among the Gentiles, and sing to thy name.

2Sm22:51  magnifying the salvation of his king, and showing mercy to David, his Christ, and to his offspring forever.”

22:51  A tower of salvation is He to His king; and showeth mercy to His anointed, to David and to his seed, for evermore.

51  He magnifies the salvation of his king, and works mercy for his anointed, even for David and for his seed for ever.

2Sm23:1  These are the last words of David. Now David, the son of Jesse, the man to whom it was appointed concerning the Christ of the God of Jacob, the preeminent psalmist of Israel said

23:1  Now these are the last words of David: The saying of David the son of Jesse, and the saying of the man raised on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet singer of Israel

1  And these are the last words of David. Faithful is David the son of Jessae, and faithful the man whom the Lord raised up to be the anointed of the God of Jacob, and beautiful are the psalms of Israel.

2Sm23:2  “The Spirit of the Lord has spoken through me, and his word was spoken through my tongue.

23:2  The spirit of YHWH spoke by me, and His word was upon my tongue.

2Sm23:3  The God of Israel spoke to me, the Strong One of Israel spoke, the Ruler of men, the Just Ruler, in the fear of God,

23:3  The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spoke to me: 'Ruler over men shall be the righteous, even he that ruleth in the fear of God,

3  The God of Israel says, A watchman out of Israel spoke to me a parable: I said among men, How will ye strengthen the fear of the anointed?

2Sm23:4  like the first light of the morning as the sun is rising, when a morning without clouds glows red, and like plants springing forth from the earth after a rainfall.

23:4  And as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, a morning without clouds; when through clear shining after rain, the tender grass springeth out of the earth.'

2Sm23:5  But my house is not so great with God that he should undertake an eternal covenant with me, firm and fortified in all things. For he is the entirety of my salvation and the entirety of my will. And there is nothing of this which will not spring forth.

4  He is like the light of the morning when the sun rises, even a morning without clouds, before dawn, a morning free from rain which makes the grass to spring up.

23:5  For is not my house established with God? for an everlasting covenant He hath made with me, ordered in all things, and sure; for all my salvation, and all my desire, will he not make it to grow?

2Sm23:6  But all prevaricators shall be plucked out like thorns, yet they are not taken away by hands.

23:6  But the ungodly, they are as thorns thrust away, all of them, for they cannot be taken with the hand;

6  All these are as a thorn thrust forth, for they shall not be taken with the hand,

2Sm23:7  And if anyone wishes to touch them, he must be armed with iron and a wooden lance. And they shall be set ablaze and burned to nothing.”

23:7  But the man that toucheth them must be armed with iron and the staff of a spear; and they shall be utterly burned with fire in their place.

7  and a man shall not labour among them; and one shall have that which is fully armed with iron, and the staff of a spear, and he shall burn them with fire, and they shall be burnt in their shame.

2Sm23:8  These are the names of the valiant of David. Sitting in the chair was the wisest leader among the three; he was like a very tender little worm in a tree, who killed eight hundred men in one attack.

23:8  These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite, chief of the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite; he lifted up his spear against eight hundred, whom he slew at one time.

2Sm23:9  After him, there was Eleazar, the son of his paternal uncle, an Ahohite, who was among the three valiant men who were with David when they chastised the Philistines, and they were gathered together in battle there.

23:9  And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the son of an Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they jeoparded their lives against the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away;

2Sm23:10  And when the men of Israel had gone up, he himself stood fast and struck down the Philistines, until his hand grew weak and stiff with the sword. And the Lord wrought a great salvation on that day. And the people who had fled returned to take up the spoils of the slain.

9  Next to him was Eleazar, the cousin of Gadho, who went down with David and three other men when the Philistines defied them and were gathered there to battle; and when the men of Israel withdrew,

23:10  he stood firm, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand did cleave unto the sword; and YHWH wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to strip the slain.

2Sm23:11  And after him, there was Shammah, the son of Agee, from Hara. And the Philistines gathered together at an outpost. For a field full of lentils was in that place. And when the people had fled from the face of the Philistines,

23:11  And after him was Shammah the son of Age the Ararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the people fled from the Philistines.

2Sm23:12  he stood fast in the middle of the field, and it was protected by him. And he struck down the Philistines. And the Lord wrought a great salvation.

11  And next to him was Shammah, the son of Agee, from the king's mountain. When the Philistines were gathered together to plunder cattle where there was a piece of ground full of lentils and the people fled from the Philistines,

23:12  But he stood in the midst of the plot, and defended it, and slew the Philistines; and YHWH wrought a great victory.

2Sm23:13  And moreover, before this, the three who were leaders among the thirty descended and went to David at harvest time, in the cave of Adullam. But the camp of the Philistines was positioned in the Valley of the giants.

23:13  And three of the thirty chief went down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam; and the troop of the Philistines were encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

13  And three out of the thirty went down, and came to Cason to David, to the cave of Odollam; and there was an army of the Philistines, and they encamped in the valley of Raphain.

2Sm23:14  And David was in a stronghold. Moreover, there was a garrison of the Philistines at that time in Bethlehem.

23:14  And David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Beth-lehem.

2Sm23:15  Then David desired, and he said, “If only someone would give me a drink of the water from the cistern, which is in Bethlehem beside the gate!”

23:15  And David longed, and said: 'Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of Beth-lehem, which is by the gate!'

15  And David longed, and said, Who will give me water to drink out of the well that is in Bethleem by the gate? now the band of the Philistines was then in Bethleem.

2Sm23:16  Therefore, the three valiant men burst into the encampment of the Philistines, and they drew water from the cistern of Bethlehem, which was beside the gate. And they brought it to David. Yet he was not willing to drink; instead, he poured it out to the Lord,

23:16  And the three mighty men broke through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David; but he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto YHWH.

2Sm23:17  saying: “May the Lord be gracious to me, so that I may not do this. Should I drink the blood of these men who have set out to the peril of their own lives?” Therefore, he was not willing to drink. These things were accomplished by these three robust men.

16  So the three valiant men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the great well which is in the city of Beth-lehem, and took it and brought it to David; but he would not drink of it, but poured it out before the LORD.

23:17  And he said: 'Be it far from me, O YHWH, that I should do this; shall I drink the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives?' therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.

2Sm23:18  Also Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was first among the three. It was he who lifted up his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed. And he was renowned among the three,

17  And he said, Far be it from me, on account of the LORD, that I should do this; because these men went at the risk of their lives. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three valiant men.

23:18  And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the three. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred and slew them, and had a name among the three.

2Sm23:19  and he was the noblest of the three, and he was their leader. But at first he did not attain to the three.

23:19  He was most honourable of the three; therefore he was made their captain; howbeit he attained not unto the first three.

2Sm23:20  And Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, a very strong man of great deeds, was from Kabzeel. He slew the two lions of Moab, and he descended and slew a lion in the middle of a den, in the days of snow.

19  And he was honored above the thirty men; therefore he became their chief and performed heroic deeds equal to thirty men.

23:20  And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, he smote the two altar- hearths of Moab; he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow;

20  And Banaeas the son of Jodae, he was abundant in mighty deeds, from Cabeseel, and he smote the two sons of Ariel of Moab: and he went down and smote a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day.

2Sm23:21  He also killed an Egyptian who had a spear in his hand, a man worthy to behold. And yet he had gone down to him with only a staff. And he forced the spear from the hand of the Egyptian, and he killed him with his own spear.

23:21  and he slew an Egyptian, a goodly man; and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear.

21  He smote an Egyptian, a wonderful man, and in the hand of the Egyptian was a spear as the side of a ladder; and he went down to him with a staff, and snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand, and slew him with his own spear.

2Sm23:22  Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, accomplished these things.

23:22  These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had a name among the three mighty men.

2Sm23:23  And he was renowned among the three robust men, who were the most noble among the thirty. Yet truly, he did not attain to the three, until David made him his secret advisor.

23:23  He was more honourable than the thirty, but he attained not to the first three. And David set him over his guard.

2Sm23:24  Among the thirty were: Asahel, the brother of Joab, Elhanan, the son of his paternal uncle, from Bethlehem,

23  He performed heroic deeds equal to thirty men. And David set him over his guard.

2Sm24:2  And the king said to Joab, the leader of his army, “Travel through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, and number the people, so that I may know their number.”

24:2  And the king said to Joab the captain of the host that was with him: 'Go now to and fro through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the sum of the people.'

2Sm24:3  And Joab said to the king: “May the Lord your God increase your people, who are already great in number, and may he again increase them, one hundredfold, in the sight of my lord the king. But what does my lord the king intend for himself by this kind of thing?”

2  So the king said to Joab the commander of the army who was with him. Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beer-sheba and number the people, and bring to me the sum of the number of the people.

24:3  And Joab said unto the king: 'Now YHWH thy God add unto the people, how many soever they may be, a hundredfold, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it; but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?'

2Sm24:4  But the words of the king prevailed over the words of Joab and the leaders of the army. And so Joab and the leaders of the military departed from the face of the king, so that they might number the people of Israel.

24:4  Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

4  Nevertheless the word of the king prevailed against Joab an the captains of the host: And Joab and the captains of the host went out before the king to number the people of Israel.

2Sm24:5  And when they had passed across the Jordan, they arrived at Aroer, to the right of the city, which is in the Valley of Gad.

24:5  And they passed over the Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and unto Jazer;

2Sm24:6  And they continued on through Jazer, into Gilead, and to the lower land of Hodsi. And they arrived in the woodlands of Dan. And going around beside Sidon,

24:6  then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and round about to Zidon,

6  And they came to Galaad, and into the land of Thabason, which is Adasai, and they came to Danidan and Udan, and compassed Sidon.

2Sm24:7  they passed near the walls of Tyre, and near all the land of the Hivite and the Canaanite. And they went into the south of Judah, to Beersheba.

24:7  and came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beer-sheba.

2Sm24:8  And having inspected the entire land, after nine months and twenty days, they were present in Jerusalem.

7  And when they had gone through the whole land, they came to the land of Judah in thirty-eight days. Then they came to Dan, and circled Zidon.

24:8  So when they had gone to and fro through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

8  And they compassed the whole land; and they arrived at Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

2Sm24:9  Then Joab gave the number of the description of the people to the king. And there were found of Israel eight hundred thousand able-bodied men, who might draw the sword; and of Judah, five hundred thousand fighting men.

24:9  And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto the king; and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

2Sm24:10  Then the heart of David struck him, after the people were numbered. And David said to the Lord: “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But I pray that you, O Lord, may take away the iniquity of your servant. For I have acted very foolishly.”

24:10  And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto YHWH: 'I have sinned greatly in what I have done; but now, O YHWH, put away, I beseech Thee, the iniquity of Thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.'

2Sm24:11  And David rose up in the morning, and the word of the Lord went to Gad, the prophet and seer of David, saying

24:11  And when David rose up in the morning, the word of YHWH came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying

11  And David rose early in the morning, and the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, the seer, saying, Go, and speak to David, saying,

2Sm24:12  “Go, and say to David: ‘Thus says the Lord: I present to you a choice of three things. Choose one of these, whichever you will, so that I may do it to you.’ ”

24:12  'Go and speak unto David: Thus saith YHWH: I lay upon thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.'

2Sm24:13  And when Gad had gone to David, he announced it to him, saying: “Either seven years of famine will come to you in your land; or you will flee for three months from your adversaries, and they will pursue you; or there will be a pestilence in your land for three days. Now then, deliberate, and see what word I may respond to him who sent me.”

24:13  So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him: 'Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thy foes while they pursue thee? or shall there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise thee, and consider what answer I shall return to Him that sent Me.'

2Sm24:14  Then David said to Gad: “I am in great anguish. But it is better that I should fall into the hands of the Lord (for his mercies are many) than into the hands of men.”

24:14  And David said unto Gad: 'I am in a great strait; let us fall now into the hand of YHWH; for His mercies are great; and let me not fall into the hand of man.'

2Sm24:15  And the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel, from the morning until the appointed time. And there died of the people, from Dan to Beersheba, seventy thousand men.

14  Then David answered and said to the prophet Gad, I am greatly distressed; it is better for me to be punished by the hand of the LORD our God; for his mercies are great: let us not be punished by the hand of men.

24:15  So YHWH sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men.

15  So David chose for himself the mortality: and they were the days of wheat-harvest; and the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from morning till noon, and the plague began among the people; and there died of the people from Dan even to Bersabee seventy thousand men.

2Sm24:16  And when the Angel of the Lord had extended his hand over Jerusalem, so that he might destroy it, the Lord took pity on the affliction. And he said to the Angel who was striking the people: “It is enough. Hold back your hand now.” And the Angel of the Lord was beside the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

24:16  And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, YHWH repented Him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people: 'It is enough; now stay thy hand.' And the angel of the YHWH was by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

16  And the angel of the Lord stretched out his hand against Jerusalem to destroy it, and the Lord repented of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough now, withhold thine hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing-floor of Orna the Jebusite.

2Sm24:17  And when he had seen the Angel cutting down the people, David said to the Lord: “I am the one who sinned. I have acted iniquitously. These ones who are the sheep, what have they done? I beg you that your hand may be turned against me and against my father’s house.”

24:17  And David spoke unto YHWH when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said: 'Lo, I have sinned, and I have done iniquitously; but these sheep, what have they done? let Thy hand, I pray Thee, be against me, and against my father's house.'

2Sm24:18  Then Gad went to David on that day, and he said, “Ascend and construct an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”

17  Then David spoke to the LORD when he saw the angel who smote the people, and said to the angel, I have sinned and I have given provocation; but these innocent sheep, what have they done? Let thy hand be against me, and against my father's house.

24:18  And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him: 'Go up, rear an altar unto YHWH in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.'

2Sm24:19  And David ascended in accord with the word of Gad, which the Lord had commanded to him.

18  And Gad the prophet came that day to David and said to him, Go up and build an altar to the LORD in the threshing floor of Aran the Jebusite.

24:19  And David went up according to the saying of Gad, as YHWH commanded.

2Sm24:20  And looking out, Araunah turned his attention to the king and his servants, passing toward him.

24:20  And Araunah looked forth, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him; and Araunah went out, and bowed down before the king with his face to the ground.

2Sm24:21  And going out, he adored the king, lying prone with his face to the ground, and he said, “What is the reason that my lord the king has come to his servant?” And David said to him, “So as to purchase the threshing floor from you, and to build an altar to the Lord, and to quiet the plague that rages among the people.”

20  And when Aran the Jebusite turned back and saw the king and his servants coming toward him, Aran fell down and did obeisance to the king with his face to the ground.

24:21  And Araunah said: 'Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant?' And David said: 'To buy the threshing-floor of thee, to build an altar unto YHWH, that the plague may be stayed from the people.'

21  And Orna said, Why has my lord the king come to his servant? and David said, To buy of thee the threshing-floor, in order to build an altar to the Lord that the plague may be restrained from off the people.

2Sm24:22  And Araunah said to David: “May my lord the king offer and accept whatever is pleasing to him. You have oxen for a holocaust, and the cart and the yokes of the oxen to use for wood.”

24:22  And Araunah said unto David: 'Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him; behold the oxen for the burnt-offering, and the threshing-instruments and the furniture of the oxen for the wood.'

2Sm24:23  All these things Araunah gave, as a king to a king. And Araunah said to the king, “May the Lord your God accept your vow.”

22  Then Aran said to David, Let my lord the king take what seems good to him; behold, here are the oxen for the burnt offering, and the ploughshare and the yokes for fuel.

24:23  All this did Araunah the king give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king: 'YHWH thy God accept thee.'

23  Orna gave all to the king: and Orna said to the king, The Lord thy God bless thee.

2Sm24:24  And in response, the king said to him: “It shall not be as you wish. Instead, I will purchase it from you at a price. For I will not offer to the Lord, my God, holocausts that cost nothing.” Therefore, David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

24:24  And the king said unto Araunah: 'Nay; but I will verily buy it of thee at a price; neither will I offer burnt-offerings unto YHWH my God which cost me nothing.' So David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

2Sm24:25  And in that place, David built an altar to the Lord. And he offered holocausts and peace offerings. And the Lord was gracious to the land, and the plague was held back from Israel.

24:25  And David built there an altar unto YHWH, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. So the YHWH was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

25  And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered up whole-burnt-offerings and peace-offerings: and Solomon made an addition to the altar afterwards, for it was little at first. And the Lord hearkened to the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
