Acts of the Apostles 9:0; 5:1–42

But a certain man named Ananias, together with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession.

And he kept back for himself from the price, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and placed it beside the feet of the apostles.

and kept back [part] of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles` feet.

But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart [for] you to lie to the Holy Spirit, and [for ]you to keep back for yourself from the price of the land?

But Peter said: “Ananias, why has Satan tempted your heart, so that you would lie to the Holy Spirit and be deceitful about the price of the land?

And Simon Peter said to him, An-a-niÆas, why has Satan so filled your heart that you should lie to the Holy Spirit and hide part of the money of the price of the field?

While it remained unsold, did it not remain yours? And after it was sold, was it not in your control? Why have you purposed this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."

Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and died. And great fear came upon all those who heard of it.

And Ananias hearing these words fell down and gave up the ghost: and great fear came upon all that heard it.

And when An-a-niÆas heard these words, he fell down and died; and great fear came upon all of those who heard these things.

And the young men rose up and covered him up, carried him out, and buried him.

The younger men among them arose, and moved his body aside. Then they took him out and buried him.

And it happened about three hours later, that his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in.

And Peter said to her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?"She said, "Yes, for so much."

And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much. And she said, Yea, for so much.

Simon Peter said to her, Tell me if you sold the field for this price? She said, Yea, for this price.

Then Peter said to her, "Why is it that it was agreed by you to tempt the Spirit of YHWH? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they shall carry you out [as well]."

10  Then immediately she fell down beside his feet and died. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her with her husband.

10  And in that very hour she fell down at their feet and died, and the young men came in and found her dead, and they picked her up and carried her away and buried her by the side of her husband.

11  And great fear came to be on all the church and upon all those who were hearing these things.

12  Now by the hands of the apostles, many signs and wonders took place among the people. And they were all with one mind in Solomon's Porch.

12  And through the hands of the Apostles many signs and wonders were accomplished among the people. And they all met with one accord at Solomon’s portico.

14  And more than ever, believers were added to YHWH, multitudes of both men and women,

14  Now the multitude of men and women who believed in the Lord was ever increasing,

15  so that they were bringing the sick[ ]and placing them on couches and pallets, so that as Peter was passing by, at least his shadow might fall on some of them.

15  insomuch that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that, as Peter came by, at the least his shadow might overshadow some one of them.

16  And also the multitude from the surrounding cities were coming together into Jerusalem, bringing the[ ]sick and those[ ]who were tormented by unclean spirits, who were all being healed.

16  Many came to them from other cities around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and mentally afflicted, and they were all healed.

21  And when they heard that, they entered the temple about daybreak and were teaching. Now when the high priest and those with him arrived, they called together the council, even all the elders of the sons of Israel, and sent to the prison for them to be brought.

21  Accordingly they went out early in morning and entered into the temple and taught the people. But the high priest and those who were with him called their associates and the elders of Israel, and sent to the prison to bring the apostles.

22  But when the attendants arrived, and did not find them in the jail, they returned and announced,

22  But the officers that came found them not in the prison; and they returned, and told,

23  saying, "Indeed we found the prison shut in all security, and the guards standing before the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one [inside]!"

23  saying: “We found the prison certainly locked up with all diligence, and the guards standing before the door. But upon opening it, we found no one within.”

24  Now when they heard these words, both the high priest and the captain of the temple, and the chief priests, they were greatly perplexed about them, as to what would come of this.

24  Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were much perplexed concerning them whereunto this would grow.

24  Then, when the magistrate of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were uncertain about them, as to what should happen.

25  So one came and reported to them, [saying], "Behold, the men whom you put in jail are standing in the temple and teaching the people!"

25  And there came one and told them, Behold, the men whom ye put in the prison are in the temple standing and teaching the people.

26  Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, for they were afraid of the people, lest they be stoned.

27  And they brought them, and set them before the council. And the high priest asked them,

27  And when they had brought them, they stood them before the council. And the high priest questioned them,

28  saying, "Did we not give you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name? And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you want to bring on us the blood of this Man!"

28  and said: “We strongly order you not to teach in this name. For behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and you wish to bring the blood of this man upon us.”

29  But Peter and the apostles answered, and said: "We must obey God rather than men.

29  Then Simon Peter with the rest of the apostles answered and said to them, We must obey God rather than men.

30  The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you murdered by hanging upon a cross.

31  Him God has exalted to His right hand as Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.

31  It is he whom God has exalted at his right hand as Ruler and Savior, so as to offer repentance and the remission of sins to Israel.

31  This very one God has appointed a Prince and a Saviour, and has lifted him up by his right hand so that he may grant repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.

32  And we are His witnesses of these words, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him."

33  But when they heard this, they were infuriated and were resolving to kill them.

33  But they, when they heard this, were cut to the heart, and minded to slay them.

34  Then someone in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a short time.

34  But someone in the council, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law honored by all the people, rose up and ordered the men to be put outside briefly.

35  And he said to them: "Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves to these men, as to what you are about to do.

35  Then he said to them, Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves, and find out what is the best for you to do about these men.

35  And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men.

36  For before these days, Theudas rose up, claiming himself to be someone, to whom was joined a number of men, about four hundred. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing.

37  After this arose Judas the Galilean, in the days of the census, and caused considerable number of people after him to revolt. He too perished, and as many as were persuaded by him were scattered.

37  After him rose up Judas, the Gal-i-leÆan, in the days when people were registering for the head tax, and he misled many people into following him. He died; and all of those who followed him were dispersed.

38  And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if the counsel or this work is of men, it will come to nothing;

38  And now therefore, I say to you, withdraw from these men and leave them alone. For if this counsel or work is of men, it will be broken.

38  So now I tell you, Keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this thought and this work is of men, it will fail and pass away.

39  but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it-lest you even be found fighting against God."

39  Yet truly, if it is of God, you will not be able to break it, and perhaps you might be found to have fought against God.” And they agreed with him.

40  And they were persuaded by him, and when they called the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.

40  And calling in the Apostles, having beaten them, they warned them not to speak at all in the name of Jesus. And they dismissed them.

41  Then they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing because they were counted worthy to be dishonored on behalf of the name of Jesus.
