1  And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

1  And it happened that, when he had completed speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan adhered to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him like his own soul.

1  WHEN David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

2  And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.

3  Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.

3  Then David and Jonathan formed a pact. For he loved him like his own soul.

4  And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his apparel, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

4  And Jonathan took off the coat that he was wearing, and he gave it to David, with the rest of his garments, even to his sword and bow, and even his belt.

5  And David went out; whithersoever Saul sent him, he had good success; and Saul set him over the men of war; and it was good in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.

5  Also, David went out to do everything whatsoever that Saul sent him to do, and he conducted himself prudently. And Saul set him over men of war. And he was acceptable in the eyes of the entire people, and most of all in the sight of the servants of Saul.

6  And it came to pass as they came, when David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with timbrels, with joy, and with three-stringed instruments.

6  And there came out women in dances to meet David out of all the cities of Israel, with timbrels, and with rejoicing, and with cymbals.

6  Now when David returned, after he had struck down the Philistine, the women went out, from all the cities of Israel, leading the singing and dancing, rejoicing with timbrels and bells, so as to meet king Saul.

7  And the women sang one to another in their play, and said: Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

7  And the women sang, as they played, saying, “Saul has struck down a thousand, and David ten thousand.”

8  And Saul was very wroth, and this saying displeased him; and he said: 'They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands; and all he lacketh is the kingdom!'

8  And it seemed evil in the eyes of Saul concerning this matter, and he said, To David they have given ten thousands, and to me they have given thousands.

8  Then Saul became exceedingly angry, and this word was displeasing in his eyes. And he said: “They have given David ten thousand, and to me they gave only one thousand. What is left for him, except the kingdom itself?”

9  And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

9  Therefore, Saul did not regard David with a good eye, from that day and thereafter.

10  And it came to pass on the morrow, that an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul, and he raved in the midst of the house; and David played with his hand, as he did day by day; and Saul had his spear in his hand.

10  Then, on the next day, the evil spirit from God assailed Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of his house. And David played with his hand, just as at every other time. And Saul held a lance in his hand.

10  And it came to pass after some days that an evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of his house, and David was playing music in his presence, as at other times; and there was a javelin in Saul's hand.

11  And Saul cast the spear; for he said: 'I will smite David even to the wall.' And David stepped aside out of his presence twice.

11  And he threw it, thinking that he would be able to fix David to the wall. And David stepped aside twice, from before his face.

11  And Saul threw the javelin; for he said, I will pin David to the wall. But David evaded it twice.

12  And Saul was afraid of David, because YHWH was with him, and was departed from Saul.

12  And Saul was alarmed on account of David.

13  Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

13  Therefore, Saul sent him away from himself, and he made him tribune over one thousand men. And he entered and departed in the sight of the people.

14  And David had great success in all his ways; and YHWH was with him.

14  Also, David acted prudently in all his ways, and the Lord was with him.

14  And David was a man of understanding in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.

15  And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in awe of him.

15  And Saul saw that he was very wise, and he was afraid of him.

15  And so, Saul saw that he was exceedingly prudent, and he began to be wary of him.

16  But all Israel and Judah loved David; for he went out and came in before them.

16  And all Israel and Juda loved David, because he came in and went out before the people.

16  But all of Israel and Judah loved David. For he entered and departed before them.

17  And Saul said to David: 'Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife; only be thou valiant for me, and fight YHWH'S battles.' For Saul said: 'Let not my hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.'

18  And David said unto Saul: 'Who am I, and what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?'

18  Then David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my life, and what is my father’s kinship within Israel, that I should be the son-in-law of the king?”

19  But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.

19  Then it happened that, at the time when Merab, the daughter of Saul, was to be given to David, she was given to Adriel, the Meholathite, as wife.

20  And Michal Saul's daughter loved David; and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.

20  And Melchol the daughter of Saul loved David; and it was told Saul, and the thing was pleasing in his eyes.

20  Now Michal, the other daughter of Saul, loved David. And this was reported to Saul, and it pleased him.

21  And Saul said: 'I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.' Wherefore Saul said to David: 'Thou shalt this day be my son-in-law through the one of the twain.'

21  And Saul said, I will give her to him, and she shall be a stumbling-block to him. Now the hand of the Philistines was against Saul.

21  And Saul said, “I will give her to him, so that she may be a stumbling block to him, and so that the hand of the Philistines may be upon him.” And Saul said to David, “In two things, you shall be my son-in-law today.”

22  And Saul commanded his servants: 'Speak with David secretly, and say: Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee; now therefore be the king's son-in-law.'

23  And Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said: 'Seemeth it to you a light thing to be the king's son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?'

23  And the servants of Saul spoke these words in the ears of David; and David said, Is it a light thing in your eyes to become son-in-law to the king? Whereas I am an humble man, an not honourable?

24  And the servants of Saul told him, saying: 'On this manner spoke David.'

25  And Saul said: 'Thus shall ye say to David: The king desireth not any dowry, but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies.' For Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

25  And Saul said, Thus shall ye speak to David, The king wants no gift but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to avenge himself on the kings enemies. Now Saul thought to cast him into the hands of the Philistines.

25  Then Saul said, “Speak in this way to David: The king does not have need of any dowry, but only one hundred foreskins from the Philistine men, so that he may be vindicated from the enemies of the king.” So did Saul think to deliver David into the hands of the Philistines.

26  And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son-in-law. And the days were not expired;

26  And the servants of Saul report these words to David, and David was well pleased to become the son-in-law to the king.

26  And when his servants had repeated to David the words that Saul had spoken, the word was pleasing in the eyes of David, so that he would become son-in-law of the king.

27  and David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might be the king's son-in-law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

27  And David arose, and went, he and his men, and smote among the Philistines a hundred men: and he brought their foreskins, and he becomes the king’s son-in-law, and Saul gives him Melchol his daughter to wife.

27  And after a few days, David, rising up, went with the men who were under him, and he struck down two hundred men of the Philistines. And he brought their foreskins, and he counted them out for the king, so that he might be his son-in-law. And so, Saul gave to him his daughter Michal as wife.

28  And Saul saw and knew that YHWH was with David; and Michal Saul's daughter loved him.

28  And Saul saw that the Lord was with David, and that all Israel loved him.

28  land Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David and that Malchel Saul's daughter loved David exceedingly.

29  And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul was David's enemy continually.

29  And he was yet more afraid of David.

29  And Saul began to fear David all the more. And Saul became the enemy of David, every day.

30  Then the princes of the Philistines went forth; and it came to pass, as often as they went forth, that David prospered more than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.

30  Alex. And the chief of the Philistines went forth; and it came to pass that from the sufficiency of their expedition David acted wisely above all the servants of Saul; and his name was honoured exceedingly.

30  And the leaders of the Philistines departed. And from the beginning of their departure, David conducted himself more prudently than all the servants of Saul, and his name became exceedingly celebrated.
