19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem so that they might ask him, "Who are you?"
19 This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you?
20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Messiah."
20 And he confessed, and denied not; and he confessed, I am not the Christ.
21 And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?"He said, "I am not.""Are you the Prophet?"And he answered, "No."
21 And they questioned him: “Then what are you? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
21 Then they asked him again, What then? Are you Elijah? And he said, I am not. Are you a prophet? And he said, No.
22 Then they said to him, "Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?"
22 They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
23 He said: "I am 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness: "Make straight the way of YHWH,"' just as Isaiah the prophet said."
23 He said, “I am a voice crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ just as the prophet Isaiah said.”
24 Now those who had been sent were from the Pharisees.
24 And they had been sent from the Pharisees.
24 And some of those who had been sent were from among the Pharisees.
25 And they asked him, saying, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
25 And they questioned him and said to him, “Then why do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the Prophet?”
26 John answered them, saying, "I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know.
27 He is the [One ]who comes after me, who has come to be before me, of whom I am not worthy that I should loose the strap of His sandal."
28 These things happened in Bethany, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
